• What is the precedence of characters when sorting in MySQL, PHP, or just in general?

  Question: Where can I find the precedence of characters when sorting in MySQL, PHP, or just in general on Linux and Windows OS? For example, everybody knows that a comes before b when performing an ascending sort on a string in MySQL. But what about other characters? Does the dollar-sign $ come before asterisk * ? Does a space come before an exclamation-mark? etc... What dictates the sort order? Does it use underlying ascii / UTF-8 values? Is it different for different technologies? • Many-to-Many Relationship (with properties) in Google App Engine for Java

  I understand from the official documentation on unowned relationships that the app must use sets of Key objects on either side of the relationship. This makes perfect sense. Coming from many years of RDBM-style programming, though, I'm pretty confused about how I can model properties of that relationship itself. For example, if I have entities Category and Entry in my many-to-many relationship and would like to persist a dateAdded property, or some other data that are only relevant when both sides of the relationship are known. I suppose it would be possible to create a third class : CategoryEntry that links the two, but this seems like a kludge. What is the proposed way to model this kind of situation ?

  From the MSDN documentation: The BeginPaint function validates the entire client area. The ValidateRect function should not be called if a portion of the update region must be validated before the next WM_PAINT message is generated.1 I've been programming with Win32 API for years, and I've never thought to call the ValidateRect function. A co-worker of mine today pointed that we were missing a call to ValidateRect, which fixed a bug we were having doing some high-speed animation using GDI (I know, an oxymoron) Can someone tell me whether or not a call to ValidateRect is neccessary after a BeginPaint/EndPaint pair? I have seen no documentation at MSDN that sheds light on this, and what documentation and examples I do see that you do not need to.

  I'm new to programming in C and have been given the task of creating a 2D array that stores random letters from A-Z using the random () function. I know how to do random numbers. nextvalue = random ( ) % 10001; but am unsure on how exactly to create a random character. I know that you can use ASCII to create a random character using the range 65 - 90 in the ASCII table. Can anyone help me come up with a solution? I would greatly appreciate it.

• How to link .lib library in linux

  I'm pretty new to c programming and want to port a windows c application to linux. My code uses a .lib file va_g729.lib - is it possible to use the same library in Linux and compile it with gcc? All my .c and .h files along with the one .lib files are in the same directory. What I'm doing now is executing this command in the directory: gcc *.c -lm and I get following errors: lbcodec2.c:(.text+0xa6b): undefined reference to `va_g729a_init_encoder' lbcodec2.c:(.text+0xa83): undefined reference to `va_g729a_encoder' collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status Is it possible to link the .lib file and compile with gcc?   Does anyone know any site or book that presents problems like python challenge, but for C++? When I think python challenge, I do not mean only a set of problems to be solved with C++ (for that I could probably use the same problems of python challenge), but rather problems that will probably be best solved using C++ STL, special features of the language, etc. For example, there is one python challenge that is specifically designed to teach you how to use pickle, a serializing library for python. Until now, I only know programming contests problems, but they could also be solved with C, java or other languages.

  I was having a discussion with a coworker (while we were programming) about AI. We were talking about emotions/feelings and if you should choose to leave any out. I asked him, "Would you leave out racism or hate?" and if you did leave those out, what, if any, other emotions might lead to the AI learning the left out emotions or feelings. Should you PROGRAM in measures to stop the AI from learning those feelings? If you teach Love, does it need to know hurt? Or would it learn hurt? If it then knew Hurt would it connect it with Dislike, Hurt and Dislike could that then lead to some other non-programmed emotion? Such as hate? All while tele-commuting from home.

I have added *.cl under Tool/Text editor/File extensions and copied usertype.dat into the common7/ide folder, but VS underlines keywords like float4 or cross. Is it necessary to add some key in registry or can somebody propose a tutorial? Thanks in advance. • What's some simple F# code that generates the .tail IL instruction?

  I'd like to see the .tail IL instruction, but the simple recursive functions using tail calls that I've been writing are apparently optimized into loops. I'm actually guessing on this, as I'm not entirely sure what a loop looks like in Reflector. I definitely don't see any .tail opcodes though. I have "Generate tail calls" checked in my project's properties. I've also tried both Debug and Release builds in Reflector.   Ok so I am learning C++ slowly. I am familiar with all the console syntax and everything, but now I'm moving on to windows programming. Now what im trying to do, is create a DLL that I inject into a process, so it's hooked in. All I want the C++ application to do, is have text in it, that says "Hooked" if it's successfully injected, and an error if something wrong happened. Or even if I can do it without a DLL, Just open an executable, and when the certain process I'm trying to hook is opened, the status is changed to "Hooked". Also I have a safaribooksonline.com account so if there is any good reads you would recommend, just write it down. thanks

• working with files on "start without debugging"

  I'm programming in C, and I have the following problem: I use fopen and try to read from a csv file, that is currently storred in the folder of the exe file of the program. the program works fine in debug mode and release mode, but when I try to run the program in "start without debugging" on visual studio 2008 express edition, the program stops working and windows is showing a message: "*.exe has stopped working. a program caused the program to stop working correctly. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". I've tried running the program on several computers, and it's the same. another information I can give you is that if I enter the full path of the file (C:....file.csv) - then is works just fine, without any problem. I know I didn't write any code, but I hope someone will have an idea why this can happend. thanks is advance.

  Hi all, I am completely new to javascript programming and I have a question that I didn't manage to find an answer for anywhere. I have recently put together a simple slideshow to view the photos remotely that I host on my home computer. This by itself works fine. The problem I run into is that when I'm viewing photos I don't interact with the hardware, which after some time causes the monitor to switch off. This is particularly annoying when watching photos on my mobile phone. My question is: is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am thinking in the direction of faking a mouse or other event every time I refresh the photo, but I have no clue how to do that and if it is possible. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  I'm going through some lecture notes, Fundamentals of Mathematica Programming (see the .nb file there). I'd like to be able to do the exercises right there in the notebook; but for some reason I can't figure out how to make the default cell an Input cell. In other words, when I'm clicking in that notebook to create a new cell--in the exercises--the cell is by default a text cell. I'd like for it to be an Input cell so that I don't have to manually change it each time. Ideas?

  Recently noticed detail description of FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING flag in MSDN, and read several Google search results about unbuffered I/O in Windows. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363858(v=vs.85).aspx I wondering now, is it really important to consider unbuffered option in file I/O programming? Because many programs use plain old C stream I/O or C++ iostream, I didn't gave any attention to FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING flag before. Let's say we are developing photo explorer program like Picasa. If we implement unbuffered I/O, could thumbnail display speed show noticeable difference in ordinary users?

• Google App Engine & Django Sandbox: Shell and Web seem to be using different datastores?

  I'm new to both Django and Google App Engine, and am using a sandbox in OSX10.6 with the GoogleAppEngineLauncher. I've got a basic "bookstore" application running from the tutorial in the OReilly "Programming Google App Engine" book. Here's the bug: If I add a new object to the datastore through the web interface, then it's readable through the web interface, but does not appear to exist if I query the datastore through the shell. Vice versa: If I add an object in the shell, then I can read it from the shell, but it doesn't appear in the web interface. Any thoughts or theories would be welcome. Thanks! =T=

• why number 9 in kill -9 command in unix?

  I understand it's off topic, I couldn't find anywhere online and I was thinking maybe programming gurus in the community might know this. I usually use kill -9 pid to kill the job. I always wondered the origin of 9. I looked it up online, and it says "9 Means KILL signal that is not catchable or ignorable. In other words it would signal process (some running application) to quit immediately" (source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_kill_-9_do_in_unix_in_its_entirety) But, why 9? and what about the other numbers? is there any historical significance or because of the architecture of Unix? • iPhone - At user event create objects in the view

  Hello, I am new to iPhone programming, so I think part of the problem is that I don't know what I really want to google to find my answer. I am looking for a method that allows a user to draw a line on the screen. There is no guarantee that it will be straight, it can be curved or whatever. I was thinking that I could create some small square image, and then as they draw, place them into a NSset. But I am not really sure how to communicate each new object up to the view. Up to this point, I've just been messing around with objects I put on the view and then assign movement to those, this is my first jump into on-the-fly object creation. It might be that I just need to jump into a class/object type or even a tutorial, any guidance would be great. Thanks!
