  • Good Compression for Slow-mo Video

    - by marienbad
What's the best way to deliver super slow-motion video to the browser? This seems to me to be a special case, because with super slow-mo video (such as 10,000 frames per second) the visual difference from frame to frame is minimal. As such, it's easy to compress highly. Please suggest codecs, as well as encoding software, backend software, software configuration tips, and services like youtube. My goal is to get about 100 frames of QVGA video to the browser in 500KB. By the way, remember that Radiohead In Rainbows site?

  • Terra lang and Lua

    - by msalese
I was reading on terralang site about terra language as "a new low-level system programming language that is designed to interoperate seamlessly with the Lua programming language..." Zach DeVito (the main author) write about the use of terra : A scripting-language with high-performance extensions..... An embedded JIT-compiler for building languages..... A stand-alone low-level language.... But (may be my fault) I don't understand if terra is: a luaJit competitor a better system to interface with c library something better than luaJit using llvm Can someone help me to better understand what is going on terralang project ? Thanks

  • What measures can be taken to make sure Google is aware of the existence of a newly created page?

    - by knorv
Consider a website with a large number of pages. New pages are published regularly. When publishing a new page the website operator wants to get the newly created paged indexed in Google as soon as possible. The website operator wants to minimize the time spent between publication and indexing. Consider the site http://www.example.com/ with hundreds of thousands of pages. The page page http://www.example.com/something/important-page.html is created at say 12:00. I want to get important-page.html indexed as soon as possible after 12:00. Ideally within seconds or minutes. What options are available to try to get Google to index a specific newly created page as soon as possible?

  • Using Mod_Rewrite To Block Referrer Based On Domain Extenstion?

    - by Matt
I've been in web development for several years now (I'm a student web designer), and recently, I've begun to experiment with mod_rewrite for things like URL shortening. I was wondering, is it possible to block a referrer by domain extension, instead of just by full site, etc.? So, instead of RewriteEngine on # Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} examplesite\.com [NC] RewriteRule .* - [F] could you do RewriteEngine on # Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} \.com [NC] RewriteRule .* - [F] without the full domain name? Thanks. I'm fairly knowledgeable about other web dev / hosting topics, but mod_rewrite is new to me and Google wasn't helping.

  • Programming Windows Identity Foundation - ISBN 978-0-7356-2718-5

    - by TATWORTH
This book introduces a new technology that promises a considerable improvement on the ASP.NET membership system. If you ever had to write an extranet, system you should be aware of the problems in setting up membership for your site. The Windows Identity Foundation promises to be an excellent replacement. Therefore the book Programming Windows Identity Foundation - ISBN 978-0-7356-2718-5 at  http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780735627185, is breaking new ground. I recommend this book to all ASP.NET development teams. You should reckon on 3 to 5 man-days to study it and try out the sample programs and see if it can replace your bespoke solution. Rember this is version 1 of WIF and give yourself adequete time to read this book and familiarise yourself with the new software. • Which CMS can I use for my project?

    - by Nicolás A.
I have to build a new website for my client.. and he needs this stuff: A user generated content website.. where users can upload their own videos.. (i will use a video hosting platform with api like fliqz.com) I must manage a big user system.. where users can create their own "sub-users"... the site must manage paid subscriptions and payments through paypal.. and other payment gateways... So the question is.. i have to use a pre-built CMS and extend it.. or just a good framework? I've been thinking about joomla, drupal and expressionengine... It's not neccesary to use a open source cms... I've looking at drupal.. but is not as easy to understand and extend... Can anyone help me to make a good decision?

  • How to purge old links in google from an old domain.

    - by jbcurtin
Hey all, Recently, I uploaded a new site to an existing domain and I'd like to figure out how I can forward all links to said domain to a new domain. I'm looking for a wordpress solution if possible, but in the end I I seem myself writing a small header script that I will paste into ever directory's index file saying header('Location:http://xxx.yyy.zzz') Is there a cleaner way to do this without having to resort to managing the whole file structure? No, I do not have access to the apache runtime. Unfortunately it is a shared-host server. Thanks in advance.

  • Who owns the code, who owns the algorithm, who owns the idea?

    - by Vorac
This question got me thinking what products of the programming effort belong to the employer, and what don't. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? Also: Who owns an idea on the web?

  • Website .htaccess file for Wordpress sub folder

    - by ubique
I developed a Flash website for a client and added the following .htaccess file in the root directory and the non-www to www redirect works perfectly. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^website.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.website.com/$1 [L,R=301] I was also asked to add a Wordpress blog so I put it in a new directory folder (as opposed to a sub domain) with so the URL is www.website.com/blog Does Google now see the main site and blog as two different websites? Do I need to link them together using another .htaccess file in the Wordpress Root so Google automatically crawls the whole domain? Any help appreciated....

  • Shinkansen for ASP.NET MVC Now Available

While building Morts and Elvises with MVC2, I cut over Shinkansen to support MVC syntax within views and master pages. I’ve included a sample MVC project, which you can either download from Codeplex or view online: view or download source code. In either case, peek inside Site.Master and you’ll see CSS includes at the top… <%= ShinkansenMvc.Includes (c = { c.AddCss ("~/assets/css/addthis_widget.css"); c.AddCss ("/assets/css/reset.css"); c.AddCss ("assets/css/sifr.css"); ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Why doesn't max-height hold in Mobile safari in landscape mode?

    - by Mick79
    I am building a small portfolio site for myself and have come across an odd quirk. I have an image inside a container, and to allow for multiple screen sizes, I am setting all dimensions in % rather than pixels. in iphone portrait mode, everything is fine. However in landscape mode, my image bursts out of its container, completely ignoring the max-height:100%; rule that works fine in portrait. code: #centralident{ position:relative; width:50%; height:50%; box-shadow: 0 0 10px black; margin-left:25%; margin-top:13%; } #centralident img{ max-height:100%; }

  • New Blog Location

    - by Kelly Cassidy
It's been almost 4 years since I last logged into this site, but when I search my name I still rank high for people searching for me! I didn't realize I was so popular!Well, I've obviously since abandonded this blog and don't really want to maintain a blog in 2 locations now that I am getting back into it. (At least, not at this time - if I can figure out how to cross-post things may change...) I can instead be found at http://mindfulsanity.com where I have posted more frequently in the last few months on a few things web and other experiences and will continue to do so. I hope to do 2 posts per week, time permitting, and topic permitting. Enjoy!

  • Disadvantages of a fake phpMyAdmin honeypot that causes ip blacklisting and robots.txt disallow/exclusion of the honeypot?

    - by Tchalvak
I'm trying to figure out whether I should set up a honeypot system with a fake phpMyAdmin (site gets hits all the time with people spidering for insecurities with that app). My thought was to create a honeypot php script that would mimic a phpMyAdmin login, and then blacklist ips that hit that url (and aren't already whitelisted). I would then add the appropriate urls to the robots.txt so that spiders that actually respect my robots.txt wouldn't be caught by the blacklist. Are there disadvantages to this approach, do legit robots sometimes not respect robots.txt in certain circumstances, are there any problems with this that I should consider in advance?

  • jQuery .Flv Player

    - by H(at)Ni
I've recently used a cool .Flv player to play video files that are uploaded by site admin and thought it's good to share. Download from: http://flowplayer.org/ Using this control is very simple, just follow those steps : 1. Create an anchor with href equals to the video url  <a href="Video.flv" id="MyPlayer" ></a>   2. Add path to the player's javascript file <script type="text/javascript" src="flowplayer-3.2.4.min.js"></script> 3. Simple call to a function named flowplayer with the anchor id, and path of the player's swf file     <script type="text/javascript">       $(document).ready(function () {       flowplayer("MyPlayer", "flowplayer-3.2.5.swf");       });     </script>

• Browser support for internal corporate tools

    - by adam
We are on the verge of a conversion. For years, our company supported only IE for its internal (intranet) home-built tools. Since a few of our users are still on XP, which means IE only goes up to 8... a heavily JS / jQuery site wont even load! We have been in the process of converting to use Chrome instead, to make use of its javascript performance. But, it has now been suggested that we support all common browsers... internally for these tools. Which means more development time to scale-back some of these new applications, more time to test in all browsers, and we are already under staffed. Are there any good informational sites/posts out there, that already make this argument?

  • Are C or C++ The Only Viable Languages for a GC

    - by user95312
Background I have just finished writing a compiler for a functional language compiling to the JVM as a learning project. However, since I'm just doing this to learn, I thought it might be interesting to write a native backend and a RTS for it. As I've been planning out what this new backend will look like, the one point I'm stumbling on is the garbage collector. I've implemented the compiler in Haskell. But I have no desire to write the GC in Haskell since, while it may be possible, it'd suck. Question I've looked at several FOSS garbage collectors prior to posting and most of them were implemented in good old ANSI C. Is this still the most accepted choice for writing a GC nowadays? I've seen that this site tends to frown upon questions with multiple answers so I hope this will make it more specific: If some startup was writing a professional grade gc today, are the only viable choice for them C or C++? It's my first question here so please comment and let me know if this question is ill-suited for for programmers.

  • Google Analytics Content Experiments for non-simultaneous tests

    - by mnort9
I really like how Google Analytics displays the results of content experiments. However, it seems the tool only works for simultaneous tests. I'd like to use the tool without implementing the page variation code into my site. For example, I want to test copy on an ecommerece category page. The original page variation would be the current page for the past 2500 visits. After making the copy changes, the new variation would be for the next 2500 visits. I realize I can simply record the metrics before and after each variation, but I'd like to take advantage of Google's presentation of the experiment. Is it possible to use the Content Experiments in this way?

  • understanding computers [closed]

    - by Ashwin
Possible Duplicate: Good resources to understand how a program interacts with machine hardware I don't know if this is the correct StackExchange site to ask this question. But I could not find any other. I want to understand how a computer works from the software level to the internal structure. For example what happens when I press a button on keyboard. The OS interprets it and then what changes happen in the flip-flops. How is an operating system written? If it is written using some programming language, then how is that interpreter written. At some point it has to come down to the hardware, right? I know to program in c, c++ and java. But after all these years I am still not sure about what is happening inside. I would be grateful to anyone who points me to to a link or a video that explains this to the deep.
