• DRY programming dilemma

  the situation is like this: im creating a Logger class that can write to a file but the write_to_file() function is in a helper class as a static function. i could call that function but then the Log class would be dependent to the helper class. isn't dependency bad? but if i can let it use a helper function then what is the point of having helper functions? what should one prioritize here: using helper functions and have to include this helper class everywhere (but the other 99 methods wont be useful) or just copy and paste into the Log class (but then if i have done this 100 times and then make a change i have to change in 100 places). share your thoughts and experience!

  I have a python datetime instance that was created using datetime.utcnow() and persisted in database. For display, I would like to convert the datetime instance reloaded from database to local datetime using the default local timezone (e.g. as if the datetime was create using datetime.now()) How can I convert the utc datetime to a local datetime using only python standard library (e.g. no pytz dependency)? It seems one solution would be to use datetime.astimezone( tz ), but how would do you get the default local timezone?

• Why is my sound not working in Flash?

  This is what I have as far as code, it is in the first frame of the movie. nature = new Sound(this); nature.attachSound("sound_naturally"); nature.setVolume(50); nature.start(0,0); nature.onSoundComplete = function(){ nature.start(0,0); } trace(nature); The trace outputs '[object Object]' at runtime. I have the sound exporting to ActionScript with the link identifier 'sound_naturally', not exported to the first frame. I don't understand why it's not working. I did like the exact same thing like 3 hours ago and it worked fine, but I lost the file so I had to redo it and now it won't work at all. Using Flash 10 with ActionScript 2.0

  I'm using the jQuery lazy-loading plugin to defer loading of below-the-fold images on a large web page. This works great. Now, I would like to apply the same technique to a large Flash object which is also below-the-fold. I don't think the lazy-load plugin handles things that aren't images (at least it doesn't look that way so far.) I may have to do it myself. In that case, how do I detect when the area containing the Flash object becomes visible?

• (VB.NET + WPF) Drag + Drop (to allow user sorting) of stackpanel elements within a Scrollviewer?

  I have good model (I think!) for how to allow a user to drag an element in a stackpanel and reposition it to another location within the stackpanel. However, my Stackpanel is placed within a ScrollViewer, like this (generalized): <ScrollViewer> <StackPanel> ....First item ....Second item ....Third item ....Etc. </StackPanel> <ScrollViewer> Here is the problem, I wish to simulate the functionality of programs like word, where if I am dragging selected content (or an object) outside the viewable area, the window will scroll in the direction of the mouse to see more places to drop my nifty little object. ...i.e. If I move the mouse to the top of my ScrollViewer while dragging a stackpanel's contents, I want the scrollviewer to slowly move up so I can see more locations to drop my content. Any suggestions? If you can help me solve this, you will be a godsend!

• Subsume external library into source tree with Autotools.

  I am developing a new project, using Autotools for my build infrastructure. I would like to subsume external dependencies into my source tree. These dependencies are using Autotools, as well. How can I configure my project's build scripts to build and link against subsumed dependencies? Though Duret-Lutz's tutorial is excellent, this situation is only briefly addressed in a few slides. I found his explanation deeply confusing. By adding the directory name of subsumed dependencies to the toplevel Makefile.am's SUBDIRS the dependency is being configured and built. It is possible to manually set include paths through CFLAGS, but how do I link against libtool .la files?

• Why does DataSet.HasChanges() return true if called in the same function as change but false otherwi

  Assuming that the buttons are being clicked in order, the following code modifies row 1 in a .net DataSet, then row 0. HasChanges returns true, but GetChanges only gives me the change for row 0. If I comment out the line in the button2 click event that modifies row 0, then HasChanges returns false. Can anyone explain to me why HasChanges() and GetChanges() only return true when they are called in the same function as the change to the DataSet? • How to find unneccesary dependencies in a maven multi-project?

  If you are developing a large evolving multi module maven project it seems inevitable that there are some dependencies given in the poms that are unneccesary, since they are transitively included by other dependencies. For example this happens if you have a module A that originally includes C. Later you refactor and have A depend on a module B which in turn depends on C. If you are not careful enough you'll wind up with both B and C in A's dependency list. But of course you do not need to put C into A's pom, since it is included transitively, anyway. Is there tool to find such unneccesary dependencies? (These dependencies do not actually hurt, but they might obscure your actual module structure and having less stuff in the pom is usually better. :-)

  i just tried to move from helios to maven with my gwt 2.4 application. so i began to follow the steps here: http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/wiki/WorkingWithMaven but on step 3 - installing the feature "m2e connector for build-helper-maven-plugin" i get an error from Eclipse: Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.   There is a lot of talk on the internet about how Maven is bad. I have been using some features of Maven for a few years now and the most important benefit in my view is the dependency management. Maven documentation is less than adequate, but generally when I need to accomplish something I figure it once and than it works (for example, I remember when I implemented signing the jars.) I don’t think that Maven is great, but it does solve some problems that without it would be a genuine pain. So, why does Maven has such a bad rep and what problems with Maven can I expect in the future? Maybe there are much better alternatives that I don't know about? (For example, I never looked Ivy in detail.) NOTE: This is not an attempt to cause an argument. It is an attempt to clear the FUD.

  I'm having trouble retrieving 2 artifacts in my Maven/Java/Google App Engine project: com.google.appengine.orm:datanucleus-appengine:jar:1.0.7.final com.google.appengine:appengine-api-1.0-sdk:jar:1.3.4 There's a similar question posted, but each answer brings me back to the same error message. More detail I don't know if it is relevant, but rather than a version number, my original dependency for DataNucleus contained a variable. I am using Eclipse. <groupId>org.datanucleus</groupId> <artifactId>datanucleus-core</artifactId> <version>${datanucleus.version}</version> <scope>runtime</scope> I did not include my stack trace in Maven for brevity's sake. C:\Source\DotNet\SqlSmoke\SqlSmoke\UserControls\ScriptUserControl.cs 84 73 SqlSmoke However, when I downgraded the app from version 4.0 of the framework to 3.5 (because our users only hae 3.5 and don't have rights to install 4.0). when I did this, the reference to "Microsoft.CSharp" was broken. Can I rewrite the VB.NET command in C# using syntax that is valid in C# 3.5 as I was able to in VB.NET? What would the syntax be?

  Previously I had thought that there were only ways to get content from external URLs into your page. These 2 ways are use an IFRAME or Javascript to include it into your pages. I've just learned of a new way using the tag. <object type="text/html" frameborder="0" data="http://Server/URL/"></object> I have found some content online that confirms this ability, but it doesn't talk much about features such as Accessibility and SEO of the page. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there any information available regarding using this method and how it effects Accessibility and SEO?

  Hello, i've got a SQL query which returns multiple rows, and i have : $data = array( "nom" => $row['nom'] , "prix" => $row['rapport'], "average" => "$moyenne_ge" ); which is perfect, but only if my query returns one row. i tried that : $data = array(); $data[$row['nom']]["nom"] = $row['nom'] ; ... $data[$row['nom']]['average'] = "$moyenne_ge"; in order to have : $data[brand1][nom] = brand1 $data[brand1][average] = 150$ $data[brand2][nom] = brand2 $data[brand2][average] = 20$ ... but when i do : json_encode($data) i only have the latest JSON object instead of all JSON object from my request as if my array has only one brand instead of 10. When I try to resolve the AccountController, I get the following error: No scope matching the expression 'value(Autofac.Builder.RegistrationBuilder`3+<c__DisplayClass0[...]).lifetimeScopeTag.Equals(scope.Tag)' is visible from the scope in which the instance was requested. Do I have my dependency lifetimes set up incorrectly?
