• Which languages are more conducive to telecommuting, and also less concerned with pairing?

  I don't know that it may even make a difference, and I reckon if it did the differences would be cultural rather than technical, but if one were going to set out today (2011) to learn a language, and specifically wanted to telecommute (so they could live in two different places during the year), are there any languages whose culture looks more favorably upon telecommuting than other languages / cultures? For example, I get the impression (and I am probably completely wrong) that in the Ruby community, you are more likely to be expected to be on-site and doing pair programming (though I suppose you can do pairing remotely too). As a corollary question, are there languages / communities where pair programming is less important, for people who wanted to program in part because they aren't social butterflies?

It also stated that of those that did, most only did the basics. I#m not surprised … but I am disappointed. • Connected to wifi, but quits loading pages after a random amount of time

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10, on a TOSHIBA Satellite L755 laptop, and using a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 wireless router. The wifi supposedly works fine on my sisters' and mom's laptops, and my dad uses a wired connection through the router. Nobody else has the problem. It shows that I'm connected and everything. The network manager GUI shows that everything is going just dandy... but it's not. I'll be able to load a page or two, then I have to disconnect, and reconnect to the router to get it to work again for a couple minutes. I noticed when I was downstairs, close to the router, this problem seemed to go away (at least, I was connected for a couple of hours without running into this problem). When I run ping -n 8.8.8.8 it shows this while the connection is still running fine 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=1187 ttl=47 time=665 ms and whe

• What is the intention behind asking weight of plane?

  I was asked this question "How would you find weight of Aeroplane" in an interview and I am not sure why this question was one of the two question asked in the interview. I tried to answer it using all possible ways but could not give the correct answer.(found the correct answer after google search) How much such questions decide your selection in the interview? Here was my approach: 1. If measurement of plane is given then i will calculate volume and multiply by density, will consider fuel weight plus other dead weight. 2. Using water displacement method if i can put plane in water and somehow measure how much water is displaced. But found using google search that right approach was to put place on a ship and mark the level of water on the hull, then remove plane and then ship will go up. And start putting weight on the ship till marked hull reaches the water level.

• Creating a level editor event system

  I'm designing a level editor for game, and I'm trying to create sort of an 'event' system so I can chain together things. If anyone has used RPG Maker, I'm trying to do similar to their system. Right now, I have an 'EventTemplate' class and a bunch of sub-classed 'EventNodes' which basically just contain properties of their data. Orginally, the IAction and IExecute interface performed logic but it was moved into a DLL to share between the two projects. Question: How can I abstract logic from data in this case? Is my model wrong? Isn't cast typing expensive to parse these actions all the time? Should I write a 'Processor' class to execute these all? But then these actions that can do all sorts of things need to interact with all sorts of sub-systems.

• Facebook Comments Lost

  I am using Facebook comments on couple of my blogs at the moment and I just found that somehow magically all the previous comments made on posts are gone and are no longer being displayed. I'm using wordpress for all of these blogs and Facebook Comments for WordPress to manage all the facebook comments. But somehow they all disappeared all of a sudden. Another problem which I've been facing lately is that I can't seem to moderate the faceboook comments. When I go to http://developers.facebook.com/tools/comments where there should be a list of all the comments made on my sites (against the Applications that I've created just for the sake of comments), there is nothing there. This has been the thing from the starting, before the comments vanished on my site, today So technically, there are two issues to solve here.

  I recently deployed a MAAS/Juju environment based on a six nodes cluster, using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, to run a "proof of concept". I could appreciate how interesting the architecture is, and I'd like to understand if I can really base my future business on this technology. Therefore I'd like to understand more about any involved limitations, constraints and necessities. In particular I'd like to understand: 1) how can MAAS be made reliable, i.e. deployed over two or more physical nodes able to fail-over ? 2) can the same physical cluster host multiple juju environments, under the assumption openstack/virtualization is not used ? 3) can the same physical node host different charms of the same juju environment, deployed in a standard, reliable way by juju ?

  Hi, I am working on a PHP web application and want to know the best way to estimate freight costs in USA. The site deals with construction materials that uses LTL or Truck loads. I found a few sites like www.freightCenter.com that provide quotes using webservice. Two drawbacks, its paid service and the other, my site response time is slow if I use the webservice.   I cannot help but think that this is currently wrong.  There are two editions of StreamInsight (SI), Premium and Standard.  A link to their differences is here Points to note Developer Edition and Evaluation Edition represent Enterprise Edition in SQL Server but not SI where they represent Datacentre Edition.  Won’t this be confusing when people evaluating SI find that it is not the same animal when they move to Enterprise Edition? If SI Premium is the only thing you want out of the SQL Server box then it is going to be a high cost. The latency rates as well quoted on the site above make Premium Edition essential if you are going to be using this to do Real-Time analytics.

  I use Ubuntu exclusively for my job, especially for the fact that everything works and I get the most out of my processor and memory, but you are killing me with updates! I just lost a very good opportunity from a client that installed Ubuntu but got tired of all the updates. I really can't argue the fact. In a matter of a day I had two software updates. Quote from customer: "It's sad that I come in at 6:00 in the morning to install updates from a LTS version, and then before I leave at the end of the day I have 19 new updates to install. At least Microsoft bundles them in controllable groups." Sadly I have to agree, guys you have to do something about this. Please!

• Having MSc or Bsc with Experience, whats worth in industrial environments?

  I'm a fresh graduate in Electronic & Telecommunication field, and in our University, we can have major and minor fields in the relevant subjects. So, I majored in telecommunication and minored in Software Engineering. As I learned programing long before, Now I'm passionate in SE and programming. And, I want drive into the SE field. And, It came to know that, in industries, most of them expecting the candidates to have the Bsc + experience of two+ years, or having a MSc in the related field. [I'm referring my surrounding environment, not all the industries]. My Question, How do they consider those MSc and BSc + experience guys in the industries? IMO, having MSc is great assert with comparing to have experience. Because, in the industry, you can drive in a particular technology (Java, .Net or some thing else), not all, and with MSc, we can get the domain knowledge, not a particular technology! Thanks!

• Why is there a delay for logging in (wubi)?

  I use wubi to install Ubuntu under win7 in partition F which is fat32. When I choose Ubuntu at boot time, it jumps into a window. It shows two choices: ubuntu ubuntu recovery After choosing Ubuntu, it shows: error: file not found error: you need to load kernel first press any key to continue. It goes back to the choice window after I press a key. Again I choose Ubuntu, and it goes black and then it comes to the login window. After I log in it works. My question is: Is what happens before the login window normal or not (when using wubi)?

• Why is there a lack of Backports of Optional 10.10 or later Packages in repos?

  This question is about backports again, but is specific to the difference in availability of packages. A specific example of this would be the two gcc packages in 10.10's repos: gcc (which is 4.4), and gcc-4.5 (which is gcc 4.5). While this change is in 10.10's repositories, such optional packages aren't included in the 10.04 LTS repositories, and the option to have a gcc-4.5 compiler in 10.04 might help several people (such as myself, who needs the 4.5 compiler for University, and I can't upgrade to 10.10 because it doesnt operate correctly on my system). Is there a reason a lack of such optional packages is in the 10.04 repositories?

• Code refactoring with Visual Studio 2010 Part-4

  I have been writing few post with code refactoring features in Visual Studio 2010. This post also will be part of series and this post will be last of the series. In this post I am going explain two features 1) Encapsulate Field and 2) Extract Interface. Let’s explore both features in details. Encapsulate Field: This is a nice code refactoring feature provides by Visual Studio 2010. With help of this feature we can create properties from the existing private field of the class. Let’s take a simple example of Customer Class. In that I there are two private field called firstName and lastName. Below is the code for the class. public class Customer { private string firstName; private string lastName; public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } Now lets encapsulate first field firstName with Encapsulate feature. So first select that field and goto refactor menu in Visual Studio 2010 and click on Encapsulate Field. Once you click that a dialog box will appear like following. Now once you click OK a preview dialog box will open as we have selected preview reference changes. I think its a good options to check that option to preview code that is being changed by IDE itself. Dialog will look like following. Once you click apply it create a new property called FirstName. Same way I have done for the lastName and now my customer class code look like following. public class Customer { private string firstName; public string FirstName { get { return firstName; } set { firstName = value; } } private string lastName; public string LastName { get { return lastName; } set { lastName = value; } } public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } So you can see that its very easy to create properties with existing fields and you don’t have to change anything there in code it will change all the stuff itself. Extract Interface: When you are writing software prototype and You don’t know the future implementation of that then its a good practice to use interface there. I am going to explain here that How we can extract interface from the existing code without writing a single line of code with the help of code refactoring feature of Visual Studio 2010. For that I have create a Simple Repository class called CustomerRepository with three methods like following. public class CustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } In above class there are three method Add,Update and Delete where we are going to implement some code for each one. Now I want to create a interface which I can use for my other entities in project. So let’s create a interface from the above class with the help of Visual Studio 2010. So first select class and goto refactor menu and click Extract Interface. It will open up dialog box like following. Here I have selected all the method for interface and Once I click OK then it will create a new file called ICustomerRespository where it has created a interface. Just like following. Here is a code for that interface. using System; namespace CodeRefractoring { interface ICustomerRespository { void Add(); void Delete(); void Update(); } } Now let's see the code for the our class. It will also changed like following to implement the interface. public class CustomerRespository : ICustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } Isn't that great we have created a interface and implemented it without writing a single line of code. • Google analytics: how many visitors have visited n times?

  I'm trying to guess how many loyal users I have by counting the number of people that have visited the site 10 times. How can I answer this question with Google Analytics? "Visitor Loyalty" is a tempting answer, but the label for loyalty is "Visits that were the visitor's nth visit," and I want something more like "Visitors that visited n times." For example, we have 40 visits in the "51-100" visit range, but I think that could be a single user who visited 91 times. Or two users who visited 71 times each. The whole chart makes a good logic puzzle (I wonder if there's a unique solution) but doesn't easily answer the question I have.

• GNU Octave - question about graphs and plotting

  I've had task to do - to make an graphical interpretation of adding two functions together: sin(8x) and multiplied -sign(x) in Octave, as shown on image above. And I've done that, but I don't know how to get rid of these lines, which link up gaps between separated values (for example, -1 and 1). I don't want them to be seen especially in third graph. To make helping me easier, I'm going to tell you what I did: I made linear series of numbers, from -100 to 99 (tempx). tempy = -sign(tempx) y1 = [tempy tempy tempy tempy] (this line is kinda funny, if you know Polish language) Creating y2 - sinus function y3 = y2 + y1 Plotting, subplotting...   After a year programming a web based business management system, I got my idea divided into two differents ways to do what I'm doing... I will try to explain in follow lines: First I will describe my enviroment: Webserver: apache, ngynx Programming Language: PHP, Shell Script, Java Script, SQL Database: Mysql Operating System: Linux, UNIX (All Distros) (If manually configured works on windows) Authentication Server: FreeRadius First situation I have my application running on this enviroment that I had just described before, as my application is a SaaS app, then I have my own server to run it all and customers pay to use it as a service accessed by webbrowser. Second Situation The same as before but with one big difference, everything (environment) is installed in the customer, then I need to cryptography all my codes (It includes PHP and Shell Scripts). I think this situation is most difficulty, but I would like to hear it from different points of view.

• LibreOffice english spelling dictionary missing

  I've got two machines, same OS (Ubuntu 11.10 x86_64), same LibreOffice ppa's (ppa:libreoffice/ppa). One has the "English spelling dictionaries, hyphenation rules, thesaurus..." extension in the extension manager, the other doesn't. Each upgraded using the ppa from 3.5.0 to 3.5.1. Can anyone provide some insight as to how to get this extension onto the second machine? I can remove LibreOffice from the second machine and install the packages from the LibreOffice site, but would prefer to keep the ppa - as I don't then need to remember to upgrade.
