  • Why is this linq extension method hit the database twice?

    Hi folks, I have an extension method called ToListIfNotNullOrEmpty(), which is hitting the DB twice, instead of once. The first time it returns one result, the second time it returns all the correct results. I'm pretty sure the first time it hits the database, is when the .Any() method is getting called. here's the code. public static IList<T> ToListIfNotNullOrEmpty<T>(this IEnumerable<T> value) { if (value.IsNullOrEmpty()) { return null; } if (value is IList<T>) { return (value as IList<T>); } return new List<T>(value); } public static bool IsNullOrEmpty<T>(this IEnumerable<T> value) { if (value != null) { return !value.Any(); } return true; } I'm hoping to refactor it so that, before the .Any() method is called, it actually enumerates through the entire list. If i do the following, only one DB call is made, because the list is already enumerated. var pewPew = (from x in whatever select x) .ToList() // This enumerates. .ToListIsNotNullOrEmpty(); // This checks the enumerated result. I sorta don't really want to call ToList() then my extension method. Any ideas, folks?

  • How do you submit an authenticated HTML form using XUL (Firefox extension) Javascript?

    I am working on a Firefox extension, and in that extension I am trying to use AJAX to submit a form on a webpage. I am using: var request = Components.classes["@mozilla.org/xmlextras/xmlhttprequest;1"].createInstance(Components.interfaces.nsIXMLHttpRequest); request.onload = loadHandler; request.open("POST", url, true); request.send(values); to make the request, and it works ... mostly. The one problem is that the form has an authentication token on it, and I need to submit that token with my POST. I tried doing a GET separately to get this token, but by the time I made my second (POST) request my session had (evidently) changed, and the authenticity token was considered invalid. Does anyone know of a way to use the XUL/Chrome Javscript to maintain a constant session across multiple requests (all "behind the scenes") for something this? I'm still a XUL n00b, so there may be a totally obvious alternative that I'm missing (eg. hidden IFRAME; I tried that briefly but couldn't get it to work).

  • Design pattern question: encapsulation or inheritance

    Hey all, I have a question I have been toiling over for quite a while. I am building a templating engine with two main classes Template.php and Tag.php, with a bunch of extension classes like Img.php and String.php. The program works like this: A Template object creates a Tag objects. Each tag object determines which extension class (img, string, etc.) to implement. The point of the Tag class is to provide helper functions for each extension class such as wrap('div'), addClass('slideshow'), etc. Each Img or String class is used to render code specific to what is required, so $Img->render() would give something like <img src='blah.jpg' /> My Question is: Should I encapsulate all extension functionality within the Tag object like so: Tag.php function __construct($namespace, $args) { // Sort out namespace to determine which extension to call $this->extension = new $namespace($this); // Pass in Tag object so it can be used within extension return $this; // Tag object } function render() { return $this->extension->render(); } Img.php function __construct(Tag $T) { $args = $T->getArgs(); $T->addClass('img'); } function render() { return '<img src="blah.jpg" />'; } Usage: $T = new Tag("img", array(...); $T->render(); .... or should I create more of an inheritance structure because "Img is a Tag" Tag.php public static create($namespace, $args) { // Sort out namespace to determine which extension to call return new $namespace($args); } Img.php class Img extends Tag { function __construct($args) { // Determine namespace then call create tag $T = parent::__construct($namespace, $args); } function render() { return '<img src="blah.jpg" />'; } } Usage: $Img = Tag::create('img', array(...)); $Img->render(); One thing I do need is a common interface for creating custom tags, ie I can instantiate Img(...) then instantiate String(...), I do need to instantiate each extension using Tag.     As you browse the web during the day, you probably find items that catch your interest and would like to save. The Zoho Notebook Helper extension for Firefox provides an easy way to add those items to your Zoho account. Using Zoho Notebook Helper Using the extension is easy and straightforward. Highlight the text, images, and links that you want to save, right click and select Add to Zoho Notebook. Note: It is recommended that you leave your status bar visible while using the extension. You can choose to add the selection to a new or pre-existing notebook or page. We created a new page for our example. Once your selection has been added to your account, you can see how nicely the formatting is retained. Notice the link at the top of the note…clicking on it will open the original webpage in a new tab if clicked on. The notebook mini pane can also pop out into a separate window if needed. You can resize the new external window as desired and send it back to your browser when ready. You can see an even better view of how well the formatting with regard to images, etc. is retained here. A quick look inside our notebook account and the notes that were just added. A second example added to our notebook account using a newly created page. As you build up the number of notebooks and pages, you can easily navigate between them using the drop-down menu in the mini pane’s upper right corner. Two new sets of notes each with their own page displaying nicely in our online account. The ease of use makes this a must-have extension for Zoho fans. Keep in mind that the extension will be temporarily disabled if you have your online account open in a tab. Conclusion Zoho Office doesn’t get much love compared to other online office solutions like Google Docs, or the new Microsoft Web Apps. However, if you are a Zoho user, the Zoho Notebook Helper extension makes it very easy to add those notes, links, and images to your online account for later reference.   • ScrollyFox Provides Automated Page Scrolling in Firefox

    Do you read a high amount of content each day on the web but get tired of manually scrolling through everything? Now you can set up relaxed pace auto-scrolling in Firefox with the ScrollyFox extension. Note: You may occasionally encounter a website where the extension will not work. This may be due to the particular website’s coding. Using ScrollyFox Once you have the extension installed you may want to have a quick look at the preferences. The default scroll speed is set at “50” and the reverse scrolling setting is enabled. You can easily adjust the settings for speed to suit your needs. Note: For our examples we left the reverse scrolling setting enabled. By default the extension is disabled at first and the status bar button will have a faded coloration. You can see what the button looks like once activated…notice the small arrow type buttons on the right side. In our first example you can see the webpage auto-scrolling in a downward direction. Having reached the bottom it automatically started scrolling back towards the top. Visiting the How-To Geek website you can see that the extension was already working as the page was finishing loading. Going up! Conclusion While this extension may not be for everyone, it can be useful for those who have heavy reading and/or very long articles to read.   • Routes for IIS Classic and Integrated Mode

         Introduction:             ASP.NET MVC Routing feature makes it very easy to provide clean URLs. You just need to configure routes in global.asax file to create an application with clean URLs. In most cases you define routes works in IIS 6, IIS 7 (or IIS 7.5) Classic and Integrated mode. But in some cases your routes may only works in IIS 7 Integrated mode, like in the case of using extension less URLs in IIS 6 without a wildcard extension map. So in this article I will show you how to create different routes which works in IIS 6 and IIS 7 Classic and Integrated mode.       Description:             Let's say that you need to create an application which must work both in Classic and Integrated mode. Also you have no control to setup a wildcard extension map in IIS. So you need to create two routes. One with extension less URL for Integrated mode and one with a URL with an extension for Classic Mode.   routes.MapRoute( "DefaultClassic", // Route name "{controller}.aspx/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults ); routes.MapRoute( "DefaultIntegrated", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults );               Now you have set up two routes, one for Integrated mode and one for Classic mode. So routes for Integrated mode only matched when the application is running on Integrated mode and routes for Classic mode only matched when the application is not running on Integrated mode.       Summary:             During developing applications, sometimes developers are not sure that whether this application will be host on IIS 6 or IIS 7 (or IIS 7.5) Integrated mode or Classic mode. So it's a good idea to create separate routes for both Classic and Integrated mode so that your application will use extension less URLs where possible and use URLs with an extension where it is not possible to use extension less URLs.     It seems that a simple download of a PHP generated CSV file (with a vnd.ms-excel mime type for the sake of opening it with (Open)Office readly upon the "Save as..." dialog, when present) always gets the unwanted .xls extension when the UA is Google Chrome. The file would then be named as myfile.csv.xls. Firefox behaves correctly. I wonder if it is a bug, a feature or a misunderstanding of some references. Thank you.

    I am working on a simple Firefox Extension, and I need a list of the user's bookmarks. I have found the nsINavBookmarksService class which appears to be the recommended way of manipulating bookmarks since Firefox 3.0. Strangely I don't see a method that I could use to get a list of all the bookmarks in a folder. I need some way of creating a flat list of all the Bookmark URIs, but without any methods that return information about more than one bookmark I don't see a way to do it.

    Hi. We are in the process of migrating a jsp-only application to Spring-MVC. For various reasons we can't change the extension of the current pages. (calls to login.jsp need to handled by a spring controller that will use a jsp file as view). We are doing this iteratively, so some pages need to stay jsp files (calls to welcome.jsp won't be handled by a controller). To do that I mapped both the DispatcherDervlet and the HandlerMapping to *.jsp, and configured the JstlView in the standard way.
