  Today I installed nut on my Ubuntu server (14.03). $ uname -a Linux boson 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The UPS is connected to another server (called neutron), so I use nut-client to keep tabs on the UPS state. When I do sudo upsc [email protected] I get: Init SSL without certificate database battery.charge: 15 battery.charge.low: 10 battery.charge.warning: 50 battery.date: not set battery.mfr.date: 2012/11/27 : The first line of the output concerns me. I've not seen this on other installations of nut on Debian-based servers. What can I do to get rid of that line? EDIT: This "Init SSL without certificate database" is extra annoying because it is not part of the output of upsc and therefore I cannot grep it out.

In the P6 Reporting Database the activity id is used as the joining characteristic between which activities are a match between a baseline project and a current project.

• ClearTrace Performance on 170GB of Trace Files

  I’ve always worked to make ClearTrace perform well.  That’s probably because I spend so much time watching it work.  I’m often going through two or three gigabytes of trace files but I rarely get the chance to run it on a really large set of files. One of my clients wanted to run a full trace for a week and then analyze the results.  At the end of that week we had 847 200MB trace files for a total of nearly 170GB. I regularly use 200MB trace files when I monitor production systems.  I usually get around 300,000 statements in a file that size if it’s mostly stored procedures.  So those 847 trace files contained roughly 250 million statements.  (That’s 730 bytes per statement if you’re keeping track.  Newer trace files have some compression in them but I’m not exactly sure what they’re doing.)  On a system running 1,000 statements per second I get a new file every five minutes or so. It took 27 hours to process these files on an older development box.  That works out to 1.77MB/second.  That means ClearTrace processed about 2,654 statements per second. You can query the data while you’re loading it but I’ve found it works better to use a second instance of ClearTrace to do this.  I’m not sure why yet but I think there’s still some dependency between the two processes. ClearTrace is almost always CPU bound.  It’s really just a huge, ugly collection of regular expressions.  It only writes a summary to its database at the end of each trace file so that usually isn’t a bottleneck.  At the end of this process, the executable was using roughly 435MB of RAM.  Certainly more than when it started but I think that’s acceptable. The database where all this is stored started out at 100MB.  After processing 170GB of trace files the database had grown to 203MB.  The space savings are due to the “datawarehouse-ish” design and only storing a summary of each trace file.   Let me introduce my situation: I have Java EE application and in one package, I want to have classes which will act primarily as cache for some data from database, for example: class that will hold all articles for our website class that will hold all categories etc. Every class should have some update() method, which will update data for that class from database and also some other methods for data manipulation specific for that data type. Now, I would like to call update() method for all class instances (there will be exactly one class instance for every class) from one place. What is the best design?

The size of my database might grow to 50GB or more. The web application will offer more reads than write operations. I also need daily backups and raid 1 storage. Is there a reliable and economical hosting company that would provide this? Additional Question: If there is a easy way to host MS SQL on Amazon EC2 service, it will be preferable.

This became necessary since I am running Linux and Windows in parallel and now need the redundancy for both OS (Im am going to use RAID1 / Mirroring). Therefore I am searching for a hardware raid controller which is well supported by linux / ubuntu (reporting smart values, stats for the harddrives, etc...). This controller should have four sata ports and if possible it should fit in a PCIE-1x Slot. I would greatly appreciate, if you could suggest some devices. Thanks in advance

• TFS Backup Plan Wizard Tool

  With the release of the “September – 2010” TFS 2010 Power Tools, came an addition to the Team Foundation Server Administration Console.  This addition is the Team Foundation Backups Tree item.  The tool is used to create backup plans and to work with it you run through a wizard, just like you would in configuring TFS or any of the extensions it has. The areas covered through the tool include: Backup to a Network Backup Path, retention configuration. Under Advanced Options, the extension to be used for the Full and Transactional backups. The capability to include external databases, meaning, include the reporting databases and SharePoint databases as part of the plan. There are further options as you can see, that includes being able to define a task scheduler account, be able to set alerts for notifications on execution of the plans, and last the option to configure the schedule for the plan execution.  All in all a very good tool and great way to safeguard the investment you’ve made.

• Disqus thread migration. Gotchas?

  I've been migrating a site to a new domain. The site itself is pretty straightforward (it uses Jekyll), and everything has gone fine -- except migration of Disqus threads. I've had partial success -- some of the threads have migrated successfully, but not all. I've tried the domain migration wizard (which caught a few), the URL mapper (which caught a few), and the 301 redirect crawler (which caught a few). But the remaining threads just won't move, no matter which method I use. So, I suppose I suppose I'm asking if there are any "gotchas" I should know about with this. When you execute any of these migration tools, it says it will "take awhile." Does that mean hours? Days? I can't tell if it's working, and there's no logging or error reporting that I can see.

• Stop Google Analytics from appending hostname?

  I've come across an Analytics profile that is appending the rest of a URL to the end of a page's path. For example when looking at the page that exists at http://example.com/page I would expect to see /page but instead it shows me /page/http://example.com/. The profile has no filters applied to it, and until July was reporting as expected (/page), in July the site in question switched hosts (and absolutely nothing else, so I'm not sure that's the problem). The analytics code on the site is the standard Google Async code with a domain set. All other profiles for the site show /page as expected. Any ideas as to how I can get the profile to function as expected?

  I'm trying to install Socialengine (clean install, empty database, legal license key), but I ran into this error message at Step 3 of the installation: Step 3: Setup MySQL Database Mysqli statement execute error : Prepared statement needs to be re-prepared I found a troubleshooting artice about "Bug in MySQLi Extension Causes Apache 500 Error" at http://www.socialengine.net/blog/article?id=161&article=Bug-in-MySQLi-Extension-Causes-Apache-500-Error I uploaded the fixed file and try to install again, but it still doesn't work. It terminates at Step 3 again with the same error message. I would be very grateful if you could help me. Thanks.

• Using an external hard drive as a server and be able to connect via wifi [on hold]

  OK, so i have an old external HDD(seagate 1tb) and a windows computer just in case but im trying to set it up as a server for my home at the moment but if everything goes right i want to transfer it to being a database hub for the business i work for that way i can have more then one register at a time on the same basic database. The thing is im new to the whole server part along with im not well versed with ubuntu either so what im getting at is if i can get it setup, can i connect it on ubuntu and run a linux based Point of sales program but have multiple linked to the single server? i may be able to do it via the router, i think its a belkin n600 with usb port but at this moment i dont know what it is since im not home. i just need information if this is possible and if so, a guide would be appreciated.

• Not assigning Bugs to a specific user

  My question: Is there a benefit to NOT assigning a Bug to a particular developer? Leaving it to the team as-a-whole? Our department has decided to be more Agile by not assigning Bugs/Defects to individuals. Using Team Foundation Server 2012, we'll place all Bugs in a development team's "Area" but leave the "Assigned To" field blank. The idea is that the team will create a Task work item which will be assigned to an individual and the Task will link to the Bug. The Team as a whole will therefore take responsibility for the Bug, not an individual, aligning to Scrum - apparently. I see the down side. The reporting tools built into TFS become less useful when you cannot sort by assigned vs unassigned, let alone sorting by which user Bugs are assigned. Is there a benefit I'm not seeing? Besides encouraging teamwork by putting the responsibility on the team-as-a-whole instead of an individual?

• Webmatrix fails to connect PHP website to MySQL

  I downloaded the latest versions of Webmatrix and MySQL. I downloaded a PHP-MySQL Connector: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/php-mysqlnd/ In the "Databases" Workspace I pressed "New Connection" button and choose "MySQL Connection" In the Dialog box I filled-in all connection details -- It looks like the database was added. But then when I double-click on the database, I get a short error message saying it cannot connect. I tried everything, searched the web... I'm sure it's a very simple question, so please whoever can help I'll be grateful. I think best solution for me would be if someone could please just give me a link to download of: Webmatrix,MySQL,Connector; and instructions on how to install and then how to connect. This would be the safest way to help me.
