• Which parallel sorting algorithm has the best average case performance?

  Sorting takes O(n log n) in the serial case. If we have O(n) processors we would hope for a linear speedup. O(log n) parallel algorithms exist but they have a very high constant. They also aren't applicable on commodity hardware which doesn't have anywhere near O(n) processors. With p processors, reasonable algorithms should take O(n/p log n/p) time. In the serial case, quick sort has the best runtime complexity on average. A parallel quick sort algorithm is easy to implement (see here and here). However it doesn't perform well since the very first step is to partition the whole collection on a single core. I have found information on many parallel sort algorithms but so far I have not seen anything pointing to a clear winner. I'm looking to sort lists of 1 million to 100 million elements in a JVM language running on 8 to 32 cores.

  I know it's usually the other way around, but I have some extenuating requirements that must be met (read as "No one bothered to do the research and now I have to bail them out") I have a standard user control (ascx) that is to be imported into a SharePoint 2007 website. Due to a design constraint, a sharepoint web part that is also needed has to be nested inside of this user control. So in other words, the user control would have to look something like this: <%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="foo.ascx.cs" Inherits="foo" %> <div id="container"> ...snipped... <!-- SharePoint web part goes here --> ...snipped... </div> Any help would be appreciated. • How to dynamically load and switch the resource file in the web app (ASP.NET) without recompiling ?

  I would like to store the resource files (containing texts for labels etc.) for my web application in the database to be able to edit and create them dynamically later (probably in the UI). My idea was to store the whole resx file in an xml column and simply load it on demand - depending on the language and some other attributes of the current user when he is logging into the application or switching the context. The important thing is that the resources do not only depend on the culture info of the user but also on some context information that can be switched by user without logging off and on again (in our case called "group", not having anything to do with a group of users). Is it possible somehow to load the contents of the resources from an external source and simply switch them without web application being recompiled by the server ? I know that there are some interfaces on which I could hook up and implement a custom resources provider which reads from the database directly but if it could work somehow with the resx files it would probably make things a lot easier..

I want the 'title image' (the one used as the thumb for it on Flickr its self), the title and URL. Can't be that hard, can it? The language of choice is PHP (5.1.6), or JS (jQuery if possible).   My objective is to write a program which will call another executable on a separate computer(all with win xp) with parameters determined at run-time, then repeat for several more computers, and then collect the results. In short, I'm working on a grid-computing project. The algorithm itself being used is already coded in FORTRAN, but we are looking for an efficient way to run it on many computers at once. I suppose one way to accomplish this would be to upload a script to each computer and then run said script on each computer, all automatically and dependent on my own parameters. But how can I write a program which will write to, upload, and run a script on a separate computer? I had considered GridGain, but the algorithm is already coded and in a different language, so that is ruled out. My current guess at accomplishing this task is using Expect (wiki/Expect), but I have no knowledge of the tool. Any advice appreciated.

  The docs say: you should implement methods of the form validate:error:, as defined by the NSKeyValueCoding protocol so lets say I have an attribute which is an int: friendAge I want to make sure that any friend may not be younger than 30. So how would I make that validation method? -validateFriendAge:error: What am I gonna do in there, exactly? And what shall I do with that NSError I get passed? I think it has an dictionary where I can return a humanly readable string in an arbitrary language (i.e. the one that's used currently), so I can output a reasonable error like: "Friend is not old enough"... how to do that?

  Nemerle is a C-like language and mostly works very well with cindent. However, its construct analogous to switch is called match: match (x) { | "Hello World" => ... | _ => ... } Is it possible to get the cinoptions for switch statements to apply to this construct, instead? Maybe there is a regular expression I can set somewhere. If not, can I get the vertical bars to align with the braces another way?

  Hi I am trying to do some maths with my VBA excel (prime factorization) and I am hitting the limit of the long data type (runtime error 6 Overflow). Is there any way to get around this and still stay within VBA? (I am aware that the obvious one would be to use another more appropriate programming language) Thanks for help in advance!   I'm new to Haskell and I'm trying to use a pure SHA1 implementation in my app (Data.Digest.Pure.SHA) with a JSON library (AttoJSON). AttoJSON uses Data.ByteString.Char8 bytestrings, SHA uses Data.ByteString.Lazy bytestrings, and some of my string literals in my app are [Char]. But now... It doesn't show... How can I change configuration or something to enable showing javascript blocks without CakePHP commands.   I'm creating some pagination for my website, and want to use an input-element to navigate between pages. Like the following example: The input would require the "return" key to be hit for the script to trigger. If the value entered is not within range and alert would trigger. e.g. If there was 32 pages, "Please enter a value between 1 and 32" Can this be done using jQuery or javascript, by detecting the value change within the range of pages and redirecting to that page? • Help creating a dll for a custom control

  I'm going to ask a newbie question here. I need to use a control I found online in my code, but it was written in the wrong language. It is in C# and I am using VB.net for work. I have all of the code for the control which works beautifully in C#, but I had issues with it not working very well in VB. The source code and a demo project are available here, but I am not sure exactly which files I should use to build the dll for VB. It seems a lot to ask, but would someone mind taking a look and pointing me in the right direction? Cheers

  Hello, As my project to do over this summer I would like to create a program that answers a Skype call using the Skype API and allows a user to connect to another VOIP provider (through SIP) and make calls by dialling through the client callers Skype application. I understand that the Skype API allows me to answer and receive keypad input, but I'm stuck on actually sending the sound of the call to a SIP client. Is there an API/library that would allow me to take the Skype receiving audio as input in the SIP client? Is this even possible? I'm not tied to a language but I had planned on using Python. Thanks.

• Programming terms - field, member, properties (C#)

  Hi, I was trying to find meaning of this terms but especially due to language barrier I was not able to understand what they are used for. I assume that "field" is variable (object too?) in the class while "property" is just an object that returns specific value and cannot contain methods etc. By "member" I understand any object that is declared on the class level. But these are just my assumptions based on commented code samples where some careful programmers used "property region" etc. I would really appreciate if someone could explain it to me.

• Haskell UI framework?

  Is there, by chance, and emerging Haskell UI framework for Windows? I recently took up looking over the language, and from what I see, it would be great little "one-off" applications (elaborate scripts). However, without a good UI framework I can't see it getting in under the smoke and mirrors of the more obvious contenders. I've read that there are many frameworks, but none are full-featured. I'm just wondering if this is something that's on the rise, or is it simply too difficult to get enough developers going in the same direction with one?

  I have a set of jpeg images where eacg image has an associated description. e.g. im1.jpg - suspect enters bank im7.jpg - suspect hands teller a note imj41.jpg - teller gives suspect a bag ... ... It's trivial to view these images individually and see the description but how do I play this as a movie? I need to play the images and when I encounter one with a description, display the description in a status pane. Do I need to convert the images into a movie, if so how? How do I get the player to notify me when the description frame is encountered? I'm using Windows. language doesn't matter, I just need the concept right now.

• Overhead of serving pages - JSPs vs. PHP vs. ASPXs vs. C

  I am interested in writing my own internet ad server. I want to serve billions of impressions with as little hardware possible. Which server-side technologies are best suited for this task? I am asking about the relative overhead of serving my ad pages as either pages rendered by PHP, or Java, or .net, or coding Http responses directly in C and writing some multi-socket IO monster to serve requests (I assume this one wins, but if my assumption is wrong, that would actually be most interesting). Obviously all the most efficient optimizations are done at the algorithm level, but I figure there has got to be some speed differences at the end of the day that makes one method of serving ads better than another. How much overhead does something like apache or IIS introduce? There's got to be a ton of extra junk in there I don't need. At some point I guess this is more a question of which platform/language combo is best suited - please excuse the in-adroitly posed question, hopefully you understand what I am trying to get at.
