• What tools can I use to locate the IP of a machine on my network?

  I am logged in to a remote Windows Server machine and am trying to attach it to a VPN for a LAN that I am also connected to locally from another Windows machine using Remotr Desktop. I can connect the remote machine to the VPN but when I do so, I lose my remote desktop connection. I am now in a situation where I know/think that the remote machine is on my LAN, but do not know what its current IP is and can therefor not connect to it again. I do not have any control over the infrastructure, all I have is a remote machine that I do control, and another machine that I also control that is connected to the same LAN as I'm trying to get the remote machine on using the existing VPN. What tools are available for Windows to allow me to locate the machine on my LAN again? I am imagining that there must be a tool that broadcasts the machines new IP using multicast, or tries to log in to a server component running somewhere with a know IP. Effectively, I am looking for some software that I can run on my remote machine, as well as my local machine, to allow me to discover the new IP address (on the LAN) assigned to the remote machine after connecting to the VPN.

• Fake ISAPI Handler to serve static files with extention that are rewritted by url rewriter

  Introduction I often map html extention to the asp.net dll in order to use url rewritter with .html extentions. Recently, in the new version of www.nouvelair.ca, we renamed all urls to end with .html. This works great, but failed when we used FCK Editor. Static html files would not get serve because we mapped the html extension to the .NET Framework. We can we do to to use .html extension with our rewritter but still want to use IIS behavior with static html files. Analysis I thought that this could be resolve with a simple HTTP handler. We would map urls of static files in our rewriter to this handler that would read the static file and serve it, just as IIS would do. Implementation This is how I coded the class. Note that this may not be bullet proof. I only tested it once and I am sure that the logic behind IIS is more complicated that this. If you find errors or think of possible improvements, let me know. • Coherence - How to develop a custom push replication publisher

  CoherencePushReplicationDB.zipIn the example bellow I'm describing a way of developing a custom push replication publisher that publishes data to a database via JDBC. This example can be easily changed to publish data to other receivers (JMS,...) by performing changes to step 2 and small changes to step 3, steps that are presented bellow. I've used Eclipse as the development tool. To develop a custom push replication publishers we will need to go through 6 steps: Step 1: Create a custom publisher scheme class Step 2: Create a custom publisher class that should define what the publisher is doing. Step 3: Create a class data is performing the actions (publish to JMS, DB, etc ) for the custom publisher. Step 4: Register the new publisher against a ContentHandler. Step 5: Add the new custom publisher in the cache configuration file. Step 6: Add the custom publisher scheme class to the POF configuration file. All these steps are detailed bellow. The coherence project is attached and conclusions are presented at the end. Step 1: In the Coherence Eclipse project create a class called CustomPublisherScheme that should implement com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.publishers.AbstractPublisherScheme. In this class define the elements of the custom-publisher-scheme element.   When i create a website/virtual directory pointing to UNC path, its make our file copy extremely slow on the UNC path. 6 seconds for file copy (~13 M) on the UNC path without any virtual directory/website pointing to it. over 1 mins. for file copy (same files ~13M) on the same UNC path with virtual directory/website pointing to it. All file copy operation run on web server side. Our setting as below: Web server - Windows Server standard R2 2008 / IIS 7.5 File server - Windows Server standard 2003 I have tested this case on 3 servers (Windows Server standard R2 2008 / IIS 7.5) and got same result. • internet access options in remote area? (read: no comcast,qwest, etc)

  Currently I am living in a fairly "remote" area, in the countryside, and cable internet access through the typical companies like comcast and qwest is just not available here. I've been trying to research other options for fast internet access. There are some small cable companies but they currently do not offer broadband access here. I thought about maybe buying a 3g phone with a data plan and doing some sort of tethering, or perhaps getting an android phone and using it as a wireless AP. This would of course depend on 3g being available here. The only other thing I can think of is some sort of satellite internet service, or doing something crazy like adapting wifi over am radio. Anyone have any ideas, at all, short of moving somewhere else?

I am planning to use Carrierwave for uploads. It seems Carrierwave interfaces with Fog for remote hosts. Is there a way I could set the other server to act as a Fog provider? As of now, when I open Sublime Text 2 for the first time, create a file and try to save it, the file location option defaults to: C:\Windows\System32 I would like to set the default save file location to my Desktop so that everytime I want to save a file, the File windows opens the Desktop view.   I have a PHP script. It runs well when I use a browser. It writes an XML file in the same directory. The script takes ~60 seconds to run, and the resulting XML file is ~16 MB. I am running PHP 5.2.13 via FastCGI on Server 2008 64 bit. I created a task in task scheduler to run c:\php5\php.exe "D:\inetpub\tools\something.php" No error returned, but no file created. If I run this same path and argument at a command line it does not error and does not create the file. I am doing a simple fopen fwrite fclose to save the contents of a php variable to a .xml file, and the file only gets created when the script is run through the browser. Thanks

  I need to configure a VPN for secure remote access to a PACS serving DICOM radiological images. The DICOM standard requires that any clients accessing the PACS must be using a fixed IP address that is pre-registered in PACS. I haven't implemented this solution before and would appreciate any guidance. I believe it should be possible to use RADIUS on the server to authenticate users connecting to the VPN and with it assign each user their own specific local subnet IP address, which would be registered with the PACS. The server runs Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2 and the VPN device is a FortiGate 60C. The What would be the best and/or simplest way to set this up?

• How to bind old user's SID to new user to remain NTFS file ownership and permissions after freshly reinstall of Windows?

  Each time we reinstalled Windows, it will create a new SID for user even the username is as same as before. // example (not real SID format, just show the problem) user SID -------------------- liuyan S-old-501 // old SID before reinstall liuyan S-new-501 // new SID after reinstall The annoying problem after reinstall is NTFS file owership and permissions on hard drive disk are still associated with old user's SID. I want to keep the ownership and permission setting of NTFS files, then want to let the new user take the old user's SID, so that I can access files as before without permission problem. The cacls command line tool can't be used in such situation, because the file does belongs to new user, so it will failed with Access is denied error. and it can't change ownership. Even if I can change the owership via SubInACL tool, cacls can't remove the old user's permission because the old user does not exist on new installation, and can't copy the old user's permission to new user. So, can we simply bind old user's SID to new user on the freshly installed Windows ? • How can I keep a file in Windows 7's cache?

  Sometimes you know better than Windows what files will be re-used later. Suppose you have 8GB of memory, and you use the same 1GB file every hour in an I/O-bound application (which takes 1 second to finish if the file is cached, and 1 minute if not.) Now you process some other 16GB of data that are not going to be re-used. Naturally the frequently used 1GB file will be pushed out of the cache. It would be beneficial if one can tell Windows to keep that 1GB file in memory. (Better yet, it would be great if I can tell Windows not to cache those 16GB of data, but I'm not optimistic that this can be done.) The poor-man's way to keep a file in the cache would be to keep reading the file. Are there any better ways? Are you aware of any programs that do this? (If this can be easily done under Linux, please let me know too.)

• OpenVPN to connect remote networks, peer to peer instead of client/server possible?

  I would like to connect two remote networks using OpenVPN. I am very new to this we are very small and don't have a sys/network admin. What are the possible setups to have both networks both live on a common LAN via OpenVPN? I would prefer to use the UDP peer model rather than client/server. Is there a way to set that up instead? I can't see how because no computer on existing network A has a routable address to any computer on existing network B and vice versa.

• telnet to 3389 connects, RDP remote desktop app bails ?

  I can TELENT 192.168.10.10 3389 and get a connection. But RDP client to 192.168.10.10 immedietly bails (i.e less then 1 sec) "connect" button greys briefly, RDP app remains on screen. Have tried these from many nodes on the subnet to 192.168.10.10 with same result. On 192.168.10.10 Allow Remote Desktop is enabled. On 192.168.10.10 windows firemall is off. Im connecting from the same subnet i.e no firewall hardware / routers in the way. AV software is installed but other nodes on same subnet allow RDP connection using exact same AV settings (network group profile) Checked 192.168.10.10 for any additonal AV software or local firewall products. Im sure non exist. Checked regedit to ensure 3389 was the port set for listening. Seems to be an XP problem (sp3) ( 2 nodes on the my LAN have this issue) and many work fine. • Our GoDaddy web server is drowning in temp files!!

  We have a virtual dedicated server with a fairly large amount of traffic. We use GoDaddy using CPanel. We have 10GIG of space of which about 80% is not our content but logs and server utilities. Godaddy support is evasive and they are trying to encourage us to migrate to new service with 15GIG. Reviewing the large files we found the following: We have a ton old TMP files at this directory. /public_html/files/TMP/FILE_PERSISTANCE_PROVIDER: (no access) some large files in these directories. /usr/local/apache/logs/ - suphp_log (220M) - access_log (7M) - error_log (5M) /usr/local/apache/domlogs/ (no access) /usr/local/cpanel/ (no access) /usr/local/cpanel-rollback /tmp Questions: What can we safely delete or truncate? How can we change permissions on files with no access to delete? Is there utility to monitor and clean up temp files Other files/programs that we can delete? thanks!

• Sending emails with remote mail server in ASP.NET blocked by Windows firewall?

  I want to migrate a web application from a Windows Server 2003 to a Windows Server 2008 R2. All works fine except sending emails from the application. If I configure the application to use the smtp server on "localhost" it works, but changing it to the "real" host name (e.g. mail.example.org) no mail is sent. The error message says, that the remote server needs a secure connection or smtp authentication. But since it works when using "localhost" instead of the host name I doubt that this is the problem. Also it's unlikely a problem with the mail server, I also tried it with another one. So for me it seems like the firewall is blocking the outgoing connection to the mail server. I tried to open port 25, but it still did not work. Maybe I just did it the wrong way.

• How to get a maximum file size of VZFS parition?

  I have a VPS hosting with a VZFS file system. How can I determine maximum file size of VZFS partition? UPD: Free space (or total space) is not what i need. Sometimes file cannot occupy a hole partition volume - fat16 with 2Gb limit is a good example. I need to use a large database file (say, 64Gb) and so I need to know if a file system of VPS hosting will cope with it. It is easy to calculate for an ext3 filesystem using tune2fs, but VPS uses VSFS by Virtuozzo, and it is documented bad. Is it any generic way to calculate maximum file size for some filesystem in linux?
