• Defense Manpower Data Center Wins Award for Excellence in the Workforce

  The Defense Manpower Data Center milConnect website recently won the 2012 Excellence.gov Award for Excellence in the Workforce. Defense Manpower Data Center milConnect is a centralized, online resource that provides military service members (active and retired) and their families (over 42 million in total) quick access to their profile, health care enrollments, benefits, and other military-related topics. An easy to use, safe and secure website, milConnect also provides service members with convenient access their personnel and service-related information. The self-service website allow users to quickly and easily find and, where applicable, update their information in the Defense Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and milConnect transmits information to and from one reliable source safely and securely.  The Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) maintains the largest, most comprehensive central repository of personnel, manpower, casualty, pay, entitlement, personnel security, person identity and attributes, survey, testing, training, and financial data in the Department of Defense (DoD).  This is one of the largest systems of record in the world. milConnect had the challenge of modernizing the user experience for over 42 million users. With records in over 22 applications and 25 interfaces in hundreds of existing systems, milConnect needed to reduce the complexity of multiple authentication sources as well as consolidating access to existing systems with sensitive information. • Lost in Translation

  Using the Correct Character Set for the SOA Suite Database A couple of years ago I spent a wonderful week in Tel Aviv helping with the first Oracle BAM implementation in Israel.  Although everyone I interacted spoke better English than I did, the screens and data for the implementation were all in Hebrew, meaning the Hebrew alphabet.  Over the week I learnt to recognize a few Hebrew words, enough to enable me to test what we were doing.  So I knew SOA Suite worked OK with non-English and non-Latin character sets so I was suspicious recently when a customer was having data corruption of non-Latin characters.  On investigation it turned out that the data received correctly in the SOA Suite, but then it was corrupted after being stored in the database. A little investigation revealed that the customer was using the default database character set, which is “WE8ISO8859P1” which, as the name suggests only supports West European 8-bit characters.  What was happening was that when the customer had installed his SOA repository he had ignored the message that his database was not using AL32UTF as the character. After changing the character set on his database he no longer saw the corruption of non-English character data. So the moral of this story is Always install the SOA Repository in to an AL32UTF8 Database This is true for both SOA Suite 10g and 11g.  Ignore it at your peril, because you never know when you will need to support Hebrew, or Japanese or another multi-byte character set.

  Testing ADF applications has become much easier as of today. At the ADF EMG day at Oracle Open World a new tool was announced, the ADF EMG Task Flow Tester.  The ADF EMG Task Flow Tester is a web-based testing tool for ADF bounded task flows. It supports testing of task flows that use pages as well as task flows using page fragments. A sophisticated mechanism to specify task flow input parameters is provided. A set of task flow input parameters and run options can be saved as a task flow testcase. Task flows and their testcases can be exported to XML and imported from XML.      This ADF EMG task Flow Tester can help you in a number of ways: It allows you to unit test your task flows in complete isolation, ruling out dependencies with other task flows when finding and investigating issues. It allows you to quickly test various combinations of task flow input parameter without redeploying the application It keeps your application cleaner (and saves time) as you no longer need to create separate test pages for each and every bounded task flow with page fragments that you used to create before. You can use the tester to simulate a call to your task flow so you can easily test task flow return values and the return navigation outcome. • Catch Me If You Can

  Suppose you have a Proxy based Web Service using Oracle Service Bus. In a stage in the request pipeline,  you are using a Publish action to publish the incoming message to a JMS queue using a Business Service. What if the outbound transport provider throws an exception (outside of your pipeline)? Is your pipeline able to catch the error with an error handler?? This situation could occur because of a faulty connection, suspended queue, or some other reason. Here is the Request Pipeline in our simple test case. With an Error Handler added to the message flow containing a simple Log action. By default, the Publish action will invoke the service in a fire and forget fashion. Therefore any exception that occurs in the outbound transport will go unnoticed as shown in the following Invocation Trace. So what now? In a message flow, you can apply a Routing Options action to modify any or all of the following properties in the outbound request: URI, Quality of Service, Mode, Retry parameters, Message Priority. Now add the Routing Options action to the Request Action as shown below. Click the Routing Options to display its properties in the Properties View. Select the QoS option to set the Quality of Service element. Select Exactly Once to override the default setting, and Republish the project. The invocation will now block until the message is completely processed. Trying the same test case as earlier generates the following Invocation Trace showing that the Error Handler is now triggered.

• Adding SSE support in Java EE 8

  SSE (Server-Sent Event) is a standard mechanism used to push, over HTTP, server notifications to clients.  SSE is often compared to WebSocket as they are both supported in HTML 5 and they both provide the server a way to push information to their clients but they are different too! See here for some of the pros and cons of using one or the other. For REST application, SSE can be quite complementary as it offers an effective solution for a one-way publish-subscribe model, i.e. a REST client can 'subscribe' and get SSE based notifications from a REST endpoint. As a matter of fact, Jersey (JAX-RS Reference Implementation) already support SSE since quite some time (see the Jersey documentation for more details). There might also be some cases where one might want to use SSE directly from the Servlet API. Sending SSE notifications using the Servlet API is relatively straight forward. To give you an idea, check here for 2 SSE examples based on the Servlet 3.1 API.  We are thinking about adding SSE support in Java EE 8 but the question is where as there are several options, in the platform, where SSE could potentially be supported: the Servlet API the WebSocket API JAX-RS or even having a dedicated SSE API, and thus a dedicated JSR too! Santiago Pericas-Geertsen (JAX-RS Co-Spec Lead) conducted an initial investigation around that question. You can find the arguments for the different options and Santiago's findings here. So at this stage JAX-RS seems to be a good choice to support SSE in Java EE. This will obviously be discussed in the respective JCP Expert Groups but what is your opinion on this question?

• Real Excel Templates 1.5

  Not the next installment quite yet, just an update from what I knew yesterday. Right after I posted the Real Excel Templates I. Mike from the PM team got in touch to say he and Shirley had just had a meeting with a customer about the Excel Templates and all the fab features. He included BIPs extended functions, data pre-processing, sub templates and other functionality which was great new news. One caveat, much of the really new stuff, is not quite out in the wild yet. Will let you know as soon as I know more. Shirley and I shared a conversation around being able to re-group data in the templates. It's one of the most powerful features of the RTF template. Providing the ultimate flexibility in layouts. As I wrote yesterday, you need hierarchical data for Excel templates. I stand corrected, 'Of course you can do that in Excel, here's an example' said Shirley 'Very cunning Shirley, very cunning' says I. You can basically use the hidden sheet to re-group the data using native XSL. I'll cover the 'how' later. As you can see Excel templates are the new 'black' with lots of attention and more importantly development cycles to take them forward. Looks like we are going to have a great weekend weather wise here in Colorado. The yard work and pond are beckoning. Maybe the trout will be rising and I can give my rusty fly casting skills a run for their money. I need some stupid fish thou :0) See ya'll next week!

  If you are at Oracle Open World, it has been an exciting couple of days from Larry's keynote to the events at the Executive Edge. The CSO Summit was included as a program within the Executive Edge this year. The day started with a great presentation from Joel Brenner, author of "America The Vulnerable", as he discussed the impact of state sponsored espionage on businesses. The opportunity for every business is to turn security into a business advantage. As we enter an in-hospitable security climate, every business has to adapt to the security climate change.  Amit Jasuja's presentation focused on how customers can secure the new digital experience. As every sector of the economy transforms to adapt to changing global economic pressures, every business has to adapt. For IT organizations, the biggest transformation will involve cloud, mobile and social. Organizations that can get security right in the "new work order" will have an advantage. It is truly the end of work as we know it.  The "new work order" means working anytime and anywhere. The office is anywhere we want it to be because work is not a place it is an activity. • ODI 12c - Getting up and running fast

  Here's a quick A-B-C to show you how to quickly get up and running with ODI 12c, from getting the software to creating a repository via wizard or the command line, then installing an agent for running load plans and the like. A. Get the software from OTN and install studio. Check out this viewlet here for quickly doing this. B. Create a repository using the RCU, check out this viewlet here which uses the FMW Repository Creation Utility.  You can also silently create (and drop) a repository using the command line, this is really easy. .\rcu -silent -createRepository -connectString yourhost:1521:orcl.st-users.us.oracle.com -dbUser sys -dbRole sysdba -useSamePasswordForAllSchemaUsers true -schemaPrefix X -component ODI -component IAU  -component IAU_APPEND  -component IAU_VIEWER -component OPSS < passwords.txt where the passwords file contains info such as; sysdba_passwd newschema_passwd odi_user_passwd D workreposname workrepos_passwd  You can find details about the silent use of RCU here in the FMW documentation. • PHP 5.4 Support: Traits

  Hi all! Today we would like to intorduce you another new PHP 5.4 feature for NetBeans 7.2 which is called Traits. Note: All PHP 5.4 features are available in your projects after setting Project Properties -> Sources -> PHP Version to PHP 5.4 value, or after choosing the same value during a PHP Project creation (in New Project Wizard). If you don't know, what Traits are, just look at the official documentation, or RFC. So what is that exact Trait support in NetBeans? Syntax is recognized correctly and code completion offers declared, inherited stuff from used traits. Note: Just one thing is not supported yet - resolving name conflicts and aliasing of method names (it means that you will not have these "virtual" names in your code completion). We would like to implement it in some next NetBeans release. Sorry for any inconvenience. • Speaking at MySQL Connect 2012

  At the end of September, the MySQL Connect 2012 conference will be held as part of Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco. MySQL Connect is a two day event that allows attendees to focus on MySQL at a technical depth with presentations and interaction with many of the MySQL developers, engineers and other knowledgeable staff. There is also a range a international speakers to give broader knowledge to the presentations. I am presenting a Hands-On Lab on Sunday 30th September 16:15 - 17:15 entitled HOL10474 - MySQL Security: Authentication and Auditing. The sessions goes through an introduction to the plugin API and how it can help expand the capabilities of MySQL. Since it is a hands-on lab, attendees will use practical examples of implementing simple plugins to get a start in developing their own plugins. These plugin examples are based around implementing PAM authentication and how it can be utilized to offer greater security for the MySQL Server. Once the authentication has been tested, a method to monitor it will be implemented using the auditing API and logging different events as they happen in the service. There is a total of 78 sessions at MySQL Connect 2012 with a great range of speakers. Hope to see you there!
