  • Delete from empty table taking forver

    Hello, I have an empty table that previously had a large amount of rows. The table has about 10 columns and indexes on many of them, as well as indexes on multiple columns. DELETE FROM item WHERE 1=1 This takes approximately 40 seconds to complete SELECT * FROM item this takes 4 seconds. Basic math: 949324-937796=11528. Numeric values are stored as number datatypes. What am I missing here?

  • Using the Static Code Analysis feature of Visual Studio (Premium/Ultimate) to find memory leakage problems

    Memory for managed code is handled by the garbage collector, but if you use any kind of unmanaged code, like native resources of any kind, open files, streams and window handles, your application may leak memory if these are not properly handled.  To handle such resources the classes that own these in your application should implement the IDisposable interface, and preferably implement it according to the pattern described for that interface. When you suspect a memory leak, the immediate impulse would be to start up a memory profiler and start digging into that.   However, before you follow that impulse, do a Static Code Analysis run with a ruleset tuned to finding possible memory leaks in your code.  If you get any warnings from this, fix them before you go on with the profiling. How to use a ruleset In Visual Studio 2010 (Premium and Ultimate editions) you can define your own rulesets containing a list of Static Code Analysis checks.   I have defined the memory checks as shown in the lists below as ruleset files, which can be downloaded – see bottom of this post.  When you get them, you can easily attach them to every project in your solution using the Solution Properties dialog. Right click the solution, and choose Properties at the bottom, or use the Analyze menu and choose “Configure Code Analysis for Solution”: In this dialog you can now choose the Memorycheck ruleset for every project you want to investigate.  Pressing Apply or Ok opens every project file and changes the projects code analysis ruleset to the one we have specified here. How to define your own ruleset  (skip this if you just download my predefined rulesets) If you want to define the ruleset yourself, open the properties on any project, choose Code Analysis tab near the bottom, choose any ruleset in the drop box and press Open Clear out all the rules by selecting “Source Rule Sets” in the Group By box, and unselect the box Change the Group By box to ID, and select the checks you want to include from the lists below. Note that you can change the action for each check to either warning, error or none, none being the same as unchecking the check.   Now go to the properties window and set a new name and description for your ruleset. Then save (File/Save as) the ruleset using the new name as its name, and use it for your projects as detailed above. It can also be wise to add the ruleset to your solution as a solution item. That way it’s there if you want to enable Code Analysis in some of your TFS builds.   Running the code analysis In Visual Studio 2010 you can either do your code analysis project by project using the context menu in the solution explorer and choose “Run Code Analysis”, you can define a new solution configuration, call it for example Debug (Code Analysis), in for each project here enable the Enable Code Analysis on Build   In Visual Studio Dev-11 it is all much simpler, just go to the Solution root in the Solution explorer, right click and choose “Run code analysis on solution”.     The ruleset checks The following list is the essential and critical memory checks.  CheckID Message Can be ignored ?   • BIDS Helper 1.6 Beta Release (now with SQL 2012 support!)

    The beta for BIDS Helper 1.6 was just released. We have not updated the version notification just yet as we would like to get some feedback on people's experiences with the SQL 2012 version. So if you are using SQL 2012, go grab it and let us know how you go (you can post a comment on this blog post or on the BIDS Helper site itself). This is the first release that supports SQL 2012 and consequently also the first release that runs in Visual Studio 2010. A big thanks to Greg Galloway for doing the bulk of the work on this release. Please note that if you are doing an xcopy deploy that you will need to unblock the files you download or you will get a cryptic error message. This appears to be caused by a security update to either Visual Studio or the .Net framework – the xcopy deploy instructions have been updated to show you how to do this.   • IIS7.5 Domain Account Application Pool Identity for SQL Server Authentication

    In Windows Server 2003/IIS6 land we typically create an app pool that runs as the identity of an AD account created with minimal privileges simply for that purpose. This same domain user would also be granted access to SQL Server so that any ASP.NET application in that app pool would be able to connect to SQL Server with Integrated Security=SSPI. We are making a brave move to the world of Windows Server 2008 R2/IIS7.5 and are looking to replicate this model, but I am struggling with how to make the application pool in IIS7.5 run as the identity of an AD account? I know this sounds simple and hopefully it is, but my attempts so far have been fruitless. Should the application pool identity be a 'Custom account' for a domain account? Does the domain account need to be added to any groups?

  • MOSS 2007 SP2 - Error while provisioning SSP.

    This is a brand new installation I am trying to provision the first SSP for MOSS and I keep getting the following error: (Provisioning failed: A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.)) The error also keeps appearing in the Application Event Log as event ID 7888. Google searches tell me its a connection between the Sharepoint server and the SQL server however, this is a production SQL Server which has several databases on it that do not experience any problems. These databases also include the Central Admin and Web Application databases for Sharepoint which are all working fine. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Our storage is spread over 6 storage enlosures having each of them 5 raid-1 disk arrays, and having 2 LUNS defined per each disk array, which makes a total 48 LUNS (this is following Microsoft fast track recommendations for datawarehouse architectures). I would like to partition my data, on other projects I have worked before, we always followed a 1 partition - 1 filegroup rule. On the microsoft fast track recomendations it is advised to create a filegroup and then for that filegroup a data file per each lun... but I pretend to have a week level partitioning... if I apply that rule I think that I'll get too many files and a complex layout. I'm thinking of just creating just one filegroup (with the 48 lun data files), but still create the partitions since I want to keep soem of the benefits of partitions like partition switching... Is this scenario not recommended? What would you suggest?

  • Can we have Linked Servers when using NTLM?

    I don't have access to the Active Directory settings, nor do I have access to change anything on the linked server. From everything I've read, it seems like this means I cannot use Kerberos - which is a big problem, because I don't know how to use a linked server without it. Is there any way to connect to a linked server without Kerberos? Exact problem description When I connect to the linked server while sitting in front of my server, it works fine; but when I try to connect to the linked server from any other computer (delegating through my server), it gives the error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456) It seems that this is the "double-hop problem," and the usual solution is to enable Kerberos, which requires access to AD and the linked server. I get the same error when I set security to "Be made using the login's current security context," and I can't use "Be made using this security context" because that appears to use SQL-authentication (which is not enabled on the linked server) instead of NTLM

  • How do I change the number of days a copied transaction log is kept in a log shipping configuration?

    I think this is a pretty simple and perhaps stupid question. I've established log shipping between two SQL Server 2008 servers using the GUI (i.e. the SQL Server Management Studio). It's been running fine -- but now I want to change the number of days the copied files are retained on the secondary server. Is it simply a matter of going back to the GUI and change it there. Is it smart enough just to make that simple change or is the GUI only used to create the initial log shipping configuration?

  • Accessing SQL Server over Workgroup

    Hello, I have two machines: A: Win 2008 server B: Windows 7 They are on the same workgroup, and I enabled network discovery. So on the server, I have SQL Server installed with a SQL Server account (mixed mode is enabled). I'm trying to connect to this server from the win 7 machine in the workgroup, but no go. Do I have to reference the server by something else than machine name? How do I successfully establish that relation? I am a n00b to this type of thing... Thanks.

  • rc.exe from windows sdk missing

    While doing some cleaning and reinstalling on my machine, I obviously cleaned one too many, and now I'm missing a rc.exe that's supposed to go either in my Visual Studio directory (not sure which one) or in my Microsoft SDKs directory. The problem is that I don't want to reinstall the whole OS again, and that rc.exe is part of some SDK freely downloadable from Microsoft (apparently 6.0a version). I can't find it nevertheless. Anyone knows what rc.exe is part of, and what I need to download (and from where) to get it back ?

  • Can't download updates for reinstalled Office 2000 on WinXP OS "expected version not found" error message

    I replaced HD and reinstalled WinXP Pro and successfully downloaded all of the service packs and security updates. I've reinstalled my licensed version of Office 2000 (upgrade version from Office 97). The software installs and is functional; but when trying to install updates SR-1 or SR-1a or any individual security update I get error message "expected version of product not found". Microsoft no longer provides support for this legacy version of office. I can't find any support documents in Microsoft's database that addresses this issue. This is my sister's computer and I've already come out-of-pocket $100 for hardware (not counting the $$hours of labor). She only uses MS Word for minimal correspondence. No desire to spend $100+ for new version of Office. I would greatly appreciate any suggested fixes for this problem.

  • SSIS DSN Not Showing as ODBC Data Source

    I have been following the directions here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/05ccd778-b78c-4a83-a10a-c4ae412cc6e4 And ran into a problem where my System DSN is not showing up as a ODBC provider. I found this which seemed promising: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000277 I was not able to delete the key but followed but I did what was suggested: "If unable to delete the key, double-click the key and erase the Data value entered. Once done, the value should read ' (value not set) '" However, after following the instructions my System DSN still does not appear as an option. The USER DSN however does show...has shown but does not work as I get a permissions error. Any ideas?
