• Can static methods be called using object/instance in .NET

    Ans is Yes and No   Yes in C++, Java and VB.NET No in C#   This is only compiler restriction in c#. You might see in some websites that we can break this restriction using reflection and delegates, but we can’t, according to my little research J I shall try to explain you…   Following is code sample to break this rule using reflection, it seems that it is possible to call a static method using an object, p1 using System; namespace T {     class Program     {         static void Main()         {             var p1 = new Person() { Name = "Smith" };             typeof(Person).GetMethod("TestStatMethod").Invoke(p1, new object[] { });                     }         class Person         {             public string Name { get; set; }             public static void TestStatMethod()             {                 Console.WriteLine("Hello");             }         }     } } but I do not think so this method is being called using p1 rather Type Name “Person”. I shall try to prove this… look at another example…  Test2 has been inherited from Test1. Let’s see various scenarios… Scenario1 using System; namespace T {     class Program     {         static void Main()         {             Test1 t = new Test1();            typeof(Test2).GetMethod("Method1").Invoke(t,                                  new object[] { });         }     }     class Test1     {         public static void Method1()         {             Console.WriteLine("At test1::Method1");         }     }       class Test2 : Test1     {         public static void Method1()         {             Console.WriteLine("At test1::Method2");         }     } } Output:   At test1::Method2 Scenario2         static void Main()         {             Test2 t = new Test2();            typeof(Test2).GetMethod("Method1").Invoke(t,                                          new object[] { });         }   Output:   At test1::Method2   Scenario3         static void Main()         {             Test1 t = new Test2();            typeof(Test2).GetMethod("Method1").Invoke(t,                             new object[] { });         }   Output: At test1::Method2 In all above scenarios output is same, that means, Reflection also not considering the object what you pass to Invoke method in case of static methods. It is always considering the type which you specify in typeof(). So, what is the use passing instance to “Invoke”. Let see below sample using System; namespace T {     class Program     {         static void Main()         {            typeof(Test2).GetMethod("Method1").                Invoke(null, new object[] { });         }     }       class Test1     {         public static void Method1()         {             Console.WriteLine("At test1::Method1");         }     }     class Test2 : Test1     {         public static void Method1()         {             Console.WriteLine("At test1::Method2");         }     } }   Output is   At test1::Method2   I was able to call Invoke “Method1” of Test2 without any object.  Yes, there no wonder here as Method1 is static. So we may conclude that static methods cannot be called using instances (only in c#) Why Microsoft has restricted it in C#? Ans: Really there Is no use calling static methods using objects because static methods are stateless. but still Java and C++ latest compilers allow calling static methods using instances. Java sample class Test {      public static void main(String str[])      {            Person p = new Person();            System.out.println(p.GetCount());      } }   class Person {   public static int GetCount()   {      return 100;   } }   Output          100 span.fullpost {display:none;}

  • Problem adding second domain controller to SBS 2008

    - by Quango
    Have an SBS 2008 server in one location, and want to add a backup domain controller at a different site. The two sites are linked by a VPN. New server is running Server 2008 R2, fully patched. At present it is a member server and the DNS is pointing at the SBS DNS. When I try running DCPROMO to connect the server, the wizard runs fine up to the point where the wizard is 'configuring Active Directory Domain Services' and 'examining forest': "The operation failed because: The wizard could not read operational attributes from the remote Active Directory Domain Controller SERVER.DOMAIN.LOCAL using LDAP. "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation." This error can occur if you have not been granted necessary permissions to read data in the directory. For more information, please see article 936241 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=88420)." I was logged on as domain administrator. Interestingly the link is invalid and the KB article does not exist..! Settings: Configure this server as an additional Active Directory domain controller for the domain "[domain]". Site: [site] Additional Options: Read-only domain controller: "No" Global catalog: Yes DNS Server: Yes Update DNS Delegation: No Source domain controller: any writable domain controller Database folder: C:\Windows\NTDS Log file folder: C:\Windows\NTDS SYSVOL folder: C:\Windows\SYSVOL The DNS Server service will be configured on this computer. This computer will be configured to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS server.

  • Does Java Spring 3.0 MVC support annotation/attribute based client side validation like Asp.net MVC

    - by Athens
    In Asp.Net MVC 2.0, at least in the beta, you could decoration your model classes with data annotation attributes and enable client side validation that leverages that criteria defined in your model data annotation attibutes. Is there anything similar for Java Spring MVC 3.0? Is it possible to inject a component into the response pipeline that can inspect the model's annotated properties and render client side validation logic to complement the server side validation logic that is invoked prior to the controller handling the request?

  • ViewStateMode in ASP.Net 4.0

    - by sreejukg
    When asp.net introduced the concept of viewstate, it changed the way how developers maintain the state for the controls in a web page. Until then to keep the track of the control(in classic asp), it was the developer responsibility to manually assign the posted content before rendering the control again. Viewstate made allowed the developer to do it with ease. The developers are not bothered about how controls keep there state on post back. Viewstate is rendered to the browser as a hidden variable __viewstate. Since viewstate stores the values of all controls, as the number of controls in the page increases, the content of viewstate grows large. It causes some websites to load slowly. As developers we need viewstate, but actually we do not want this for all the controls in the page. Till asp.net 3.5, if viewstate is disabled from web.config (using <pages viewstate=”false”/> ..</pages>), then you can not enable it from the control level/page level. Both <%@ Page EnableViewState=”true”…. and <asp:textbox EnableViewState=”true” will not work in this case. Lot of developers demands for more control over viewstate. It will be useful if the developers are able to disable it for the entire page and enable it for only those controls that needed viewstate. With ASP.NET 4.0, this is possible, a happy news for the developers. This is achieved by introducing a new property called ViewStateMode. Let us see, What is ViewStateMode – Is a new property in asp.net 4.0, that allows developers to enable viewstate for individual control even if the parent has disabled it. This ViewStateMode property can contain either of three values Enabled- Enable view state for the control even if the parent control has view state disabled. Disabled - Disable view state for this control even if the parent control has view state enabled Inherit - Inherit the value of ViewStateMode from the parent, this is the default value. To disable view state for a page and to enable it for a specific control on the page, you can set the EnableViewState property of the page to true, then set the ViewStateMode property of the page to Disabled, and then set the ViewStateMode property of the control to Enabled. Find the example below. Page directive - <%@ Page Language="C#" EnableViewState="True" ViewStateMode="Disabled" .......... %> Code for the control - <asp:TextBox runat="server" ViewStateMode="Enabled" ............../> Now the viewstate will be disabled for the whole page, but enabled for the TextBox. ViewStateMode gives developers more control over the viewstate.

  • ASP.Net MVC: "Random" URLs getting generated by URL.Action

    - by Daniel Magliola
    I have 2 very similar routes, just because i'm trying to generate two different URLs for the same resource (same Controller/Action), and both are very similar. These are the routes definitions: routes.MapRoute("Post2.Mp3", "sites/{siteSlug}/post/{brand}/aconstant-{slug}.mp3", new { controller = "Posts", action = "Mp3" }, new { siteSlug = @"[A-Za-z0-9-_]+", slug = @"[^(aconstant\-)][A-Za-z0-9-_]+", brand = @"[A-Za-z0-9-_]+" }); routes.MapRoute("Post.Mp3", "sites/{siteSlug}/post/{slug}.mp3", new { controller = "Posts", action = "Mp3" }, new { siteSlug = @"[A-Za-z0-9-_]+", slug = @"[A-Za-z0-9-_]+" }); "brand" is going to be my site name, which is the same as "aconstant" in those routes. Now, if I try this: Url.Action("ShowMp3", "Posts", new { siteSlug = post.Site.Slug, slug = post.Slug, origin = "origfeedwithaudio", brand = "aconstant" }) sometimes I get the URL I expect: /sites/site-Name/post/aconstant/aconstant-post-Name.mp3 but sometimes, I get this: /sites/site-Name/post/post-Name.mp3?brand=aconstant By sometimes, I mean that different sets of "slugs" give me one or the other. I haven't seen the same set of slugs give me different URLs. I haven't found any reasonable rule for when i'm getting one or the other, it seems random. What is going on here? How can I be getting different URLs based on esentially the same arguments? Thanks! Daniel

  • MVC.NET project won't start under IIS 5.1 on Windows XP SP3

    - by mrjoltcola
    I've a MVC.NET 2 project that runs fine under Windows 7 and will start on Windows XP if I use the Visual Studio Development Server, however, starting under IIS generates an error: Unable to start debugging on the web server With the message The specified procedure could not be found No errors in the system event viewer. If I start without debugging I get an "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" The reason I run it under IIS is the project also includes some WCF wsHttp web services that use certificates, so the VS Development Server is not adequate for hosting those. I have already seen the links on SO that talk about adding the wildcard mapping. I've already done that, just as I've done on Windows Server 2003 where I successfully host MVC.NET RC2 for quite a while.

  • Visual Studio 2010 Full and ASP.NET MVC 2.0 Template

    - by Daniel
    Hello, I've installed full version (not RC nor Beta) of Visual Studio 2010, a then setup within Web Platform Installer 2.0 announce me that I need to install MVC 2.0, so i did it. When I want to create project "MvcWebApplicationProjectTemplate" in VS I have following message: error: this template attempted to load component assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Web.Mvc.2.0, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'. For more information on this problem and how to enable this template, please see documentation on Customizing Project Templates. Any idea how to fix it? Do you think that Web Platform Installer 2.0 might have corrupted this template? Thanks, Daniel

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 - Saving child entities on form submit

    - by Justin
    Hey, I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2 and am struggling with saving child entities. I have an existing Invoice entity (which I create on a separate form) and then I have a LogHours view that I'd like to use to save InvoiceLog's, which are child entities of Invoice. Here's the view: <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<TothSolutions.Data.Invoice>" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="TitleContent" runat="server"> Log Hours </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content3" ContentPlaceHolderID="HeadContent" runat="server">  </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server">
Log Hours
<% using (Html.BeginForm("SaveHours", "Invoices")) {%> <%: Html.ValidationSummary(true) %> <fieldset> <legend>Fields</legend>

Date

Description

Hours

<% int index = 0; foreach (var log in Model.InvoiceLogs) { %>

<%: log.LogDate.ToShortDateString() %>

<%: Html.TextBox("InvoiceLogs[" + index + "].Description")%>

<%: Html.TextBox("InvoiceLogs[" + index + "].Hours")%>

Hours

<% index++; } %>

<%: Html.Hidden("InvoiceID") %> <%: Html.Hidden("CreateDate") %>
</fieldset> <% } %>
<%: Html.ActionLink("Back to List", "Index") %>
</asp:Content> And here's the controller code: //GET: /Secure/Invoices/LogHours/ public ActionResult LogHours(int id) { var invoice = DataContext.InvoiceData.Get(id); if (invoice == null) { throw new Exception("Invoice not found with id: " + id); } return View(invoice); } //POST: /Secure/Invoices/SaveHours/ [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult SaveHours([Bind(Exclude = "InvoiceLogs")]Invoice invoice) { TryUpdateModel(invoice.InvoiceLogs, "InvoiceLogs"); invoice.UpdateDate = DateTime.Now; invoice.DeveloperID = DeveloperID; //attaching existing invoice. DataContext.InvoiceData.Attach(invoice); //save changes. DataContext.SaveChanges(); //redirect to invoice list. return RedirectToAction("Index"); } And the data access code: public static void Attach(Invoice invoice) { var i = new Invoice { InvoiceID = invoice.InvoiceID }; db.Invoices.Attach(i); db.Invoices.ApplyCurrentValues(invoice); } In the SaveHours action, it properly sets the values of the InvoiceLog entities after I call TryUpdateModel but when it does SaveChanges it doesn't update the database with the new values. Also, if you manually update the values of the InvoiceLog entries in the database and then go to this page it doesn't populate the textboxes so it's clearly not binding correctly. Thanks, Justin

  • ASP.NET/IIS Fix: The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine.

    - by Ken Cox [MVP]
    In my latest ASP.NET project, I refresh the sample data using an Excel spreadsheet from the client. After upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2, I suddenly discovered this error: The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine. The error message is totally bogus! The problem is that I’m running IIS on a 64-bit machine and the ol’ OLEDB thingy just isn’t up with the times. To fix it, go into the IIS Manager and find out which Application Pool the site is using. In my case...(read more)

  • How to change id value when using Html.DropDownListFor helper in asp.net mvc 2.0?

    - by chobo2
    Hi I have a partial view that has something like this <%= Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.SelectedProductName, Model.ProductList, "Select a Product") %> Now you can create a new product and edit a existing product. Both editing and creating use the same form. The create is on the main page on load up. Edit popus up in a jquery u.i model dialog and renders a new partial view. So as far as the page is concerned is that I have 2 dropdown boxes with the same "id" which is bad since they should be unique. So how do I change the id? So when the edit loads it might have a id of "editSelectedProductName"? I tried to do this in the view model public string SelectedProductName{ get; set; } ViewModelConstructor() { SelectedProductName = "EditSelectedProductName"; } But it seems to not care and keeps using "SelectedProductName" as the product name. Thanks

  • Passing Control's Value to Modal Popup

    - by Sherwin Valdez
    Hello, Just would like know how to pass textbox value to a modal popup after clicking a button using ModalPopUpExtender in ASP.NET, I've tried these codes but seems that I have no luck :(  <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"> </asp:ScriptManager> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Button" OnClick='showModalPopup(); return false;' /> <cc1:ModalPopupExtender ID="ModalPopupExtender1" runat="server" TargetControlID="Button1" PopupControlID="Panel1" CancelControlID="btnCancel" OkControlID="btnOkay" BackgroundCssClass="ModalPopupBG"> </cc1:ModalPopupExtender> <asp:Panel ID="Panel1" Style="display: none" runat="server">

Header

<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server"></asp:Label>

</asp:Panel> javascript function showModalPopup() { //show the ModalPopupExtender var value; value = document.getElementById("TextBox1").value; $get("<%=Label1.ClientID %>").value = value; $find("<%=ModalPopupExtender1.ClientID %>").show(); } I wonder what I miss out :(, Thanks and I hope someone could help me :)

  • Does "Debug" invalidate ASP.Net MVC OutputCache?

    - by William Edmondson
    I have images stored in a database and am serving them from an MVC controller as "FileResult". If I run the MVC application from Visual Studio 2008 in debug mode and set a break point inside the controller method the debugger intercepts the call on every page refresh regardless of my "OutputCache" settings. Does the VS debugger invalidate the OutputCache or is there something else going on here? [OutputCache(Duration = 86400, VaryByParam = "id")] public FileResult Index(string id) { byte[] image; int imageId; int.TryParse(id, out imageId); using (var ctx = new EPEntities()) { var imageObj = (from images in ctx.Images where images.ID == imageId select images).FirstOrDefault(); image = imageObj.Image; } return new FileContentResult(image, "image/gif"); }

  • ASP. Net MVC and RegisterClientScriptBlock alternative

    - by Noel
    I currently have a web form aspx page that calls RegisterClientScriptBlock. This sends down message text that I use for client side validation e.g. The values are generated on the server side based on culture and resource files. I believe you cannot use RegisterClientScriptBlock with MVC. Any ideas on how I can achieve this with MVC?

  • ASP.NET MVC The new ActionLink with MvcHtmlString and request URL generated

    - by mare
    This piece of code used to work in MVC 1 but it does not since I upgraded to MVC 2: <%=Html.ActionLink(Resources.Localize.Routes_WidgetsCreate, "Create" + "?modal=true", "Widget", null, new { rel = "shadowbox;height=600;width=700", title = Resources.Localize.Routes_WidgetsCreate })%> I am aware it has something to do with the way ActionLink encodes things, so the result that comes out is something like this: "http://localhost:53704/Widget/Create%3fmodal%3dtrue" The problem is, when clicked, the Shadowbox modal opens up and inside, where the request View should be rendered is this exception: Server Error in '/' Application. A potentially dangerous Request.Path value was detected from the client (?). What can I do to get past that? Do you recommend another way of sending params to the view besides in QueryString (in this case I need "modal" because in the view I select CSS styles based on whether we are rendering modal or not)?

  • Asp.net PopupControlExtender inside UpdatePabel

    - by user296422
    Hi, So i use PopupControlExtender (to edit some of the fields) inside ListViewControl which itself is embeded inside an UpdatePanel. The problem is as follows whenever you cause partail postback the popup panels are created client side outside the updatepanel. And you get more clientside controls with the same clientside ID. When you postback with popup panel the server side control eg. • Reading the selected value from asp:RadioButtonList using jQuery

    - by digiguru
    I've got code similar to the following...
Do you have buffet facilities? <asp:RadioButtonList ID="blnBuffetMealFacilities:chk" runat="server"> <asp:ListItem Text="Yes" Value="1"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="No" Value="0"></asp:ListItem> </asp:RadioButtonList>

What is the capacity for the buffet? <asp:RadioButtonList ID="radBuffetCapacity" runat="server"> <asp:ListItem Text="Suitable for upto 30 guests" value="0 to 30"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="Suitable for upto 50 guests" value="30 to 50"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="Suitable for upto 75 guests" value="50 to 75"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="Suitable for upto 100 guests" value="75 to 100"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="Suitable for upto 150 guests" value="100 to 150"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="Suitable for upto 250 guests" value="150 to 250"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="Suitable for upto 400 guests" value="250 to 400"></asp:ListItem> </asp:RadioButtonList>

I want to capture an event when the radio list blBuffetMealFacilities:chk changes client side and perform a slide down function on the HasBuffet div from jQuery. What's the best way to create this, bearing in mind there are several similar sections on the page, where I want questions to be revealed depending on a yes no answer in a radio list.

  • MVC 2 Conversion Disrupts the parameters passed to my Stored Procedure

    - by user54197
    I have a few textboxes that are not required. If the user enters nothing it is passed as 'null' in MVC 2. It was passed as '""' in MVC 1. What changes can I make to accomodate for this? public string Name { get; set; } public string Offer{ get; set; } public string AutoID { get; set; } using (SqlConnection connect = new SqlConnection(connections)) { SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand("Info_Add", connect); command.Parameters.Add("autoID", SqlDbType.BigInt).Direction = ParameterDirection.Output; command.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("name", Name)); //Offer now returns a null value, which cannot be passed command.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("offer", Offer)); command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; connect.Open(); command.ExecuteNonQuery(); AutoID = command.Parameters["autoID"].Value.ToString(); }

  • Is POSTing a Dictionary to an .NET MVC action possible?

    - by Brenton Alker
    I have a form which contains a series of fields like: ... Where the index of the User array (123 and 456) are ID's associated with the value. I'm trying to update these values in the controller. My thinking is that a Dictionary that maps ID to name would work, but creating the action like: public void Save(Dictionary<string, string> user) { // ... } results in the user parameter being null. So, is passing a Dictionary possible? or, is there another method to achieve this?

  • ASP MVC 2 : Custom display of a required form element based on ModelMetaData

    - by Nigel
    I have an MVC 2 application that utilises forms. The required fields within the form are set using attributes that update the model metadata. The form fields are created using the MVC HtmlHelper method : Html.EditorFor. This works fine so far as validation is concerned, but it seems that by default the required fields are not displayed to the user (for example by appending a * to the control). If I wanted to provide some custom means of displaying this fact to the user (lets immagine I want to change the background colour of the edit control for example), where is the best place to do it. Would I need to create a custom html helper to replace EditorFor? I tried but it seemed difficult to gain access to the metadata for the correct property. I already have a custom ModelMetaDataProvider so there is no problem adding it there if that is the correct place.

  • How do I maintain scroll position in MVC?

    - by Eric Brown
    Im working on a project in MVC and have enjoyed learning about it. There are a few growing pains but once you figure them out it's not bad. One thing that is really simple in the WebForms world is maintaining the scroll position on a page. All you do is set the MaintainScrollPositionOnPostback property to true. However, in MVC, Im not using postbacks so this will not work for me. What is the standard way of handling this? Edit: Ajax is acceptable, but I was also wondering how you would do it without AJAX.
