• nginx+django serving static files

    - by avalore
    I have followed instruction for setting up django with nginx from the django wiki (https://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/DjangoAndNginx) and have nginx setup as follows (a few name changes to fit my setup). user nginx nginx; worker_processes 2; error_log /var/log/nginx/error_log info; events { worker_connections 1024; use epoll; } http { include /etc/nginx/mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; log_format main '$remote_addr - $remote_user [$time_local] ' '"$request" $status $bytes_sent ' '"$http_referer" "$http_user_agent" ' '"$gzip_ratio"'; client_header_timeout 10m; client_body_timeout 10m; send_timeout 10m; connection_pool_size 256; client_header_buffer_size 1k; large_client_header_buffers 4 2k; request_pool_size 4k; gzip on; gzip_min_length 1100; gzip_buffers 4 8k; gzip_types text/plain; output_buffers 1 32k; postpone_output 1460; sendfile on; tcp_nopush on; tcp_nodelay on; keepalive_timeout 75 20; ignore_invalid_headers on; index index.html; server { listen 80; server_name localhost; location /static/ { root /srv/static/; } location ~* ^.+\.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png|ico|css|zip|tgz|gz|rar|bz2|doc|xls|exe|pdf|ppt|txt|tar|mid|midi|wav|bmp|rtf|js|mov) { access_log off; expires 30d; } location / { # host and port to fastcgi server fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:8080; fastcgi_param PATH_INFO $fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_pass_header Authorization; fastcgi_intercept_errors off; fastcgi_param REMOTE_ADDR $remote_addr; } access_log /var/log/nginx/localhost.access_log main; error_log /var/log/nginx/localhost.error_log; } } Static files aren't being served (nginx 404). If I look in the access log it seems nginx is looking in /etc/nginx/html/static... rather than /srv/static/ as specified in the config. I've no clue why it's doing this, any help would be hugely appreciated.

  • Custom Django admin URL + changelist view for custom list filter by Tags

    - by Botondus
    In django admin I wanted to set up a custom filter by tags (tags are introduced with django-tagging) I've made the ModelAdmin for this and it used to work fine, by appending custom urlconf and modifying the changelist view. It should work with URLs like: http://127.0.0.1:8000/admin/reviews/review/only-tagged-vista/ But now I get 'invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'only-tagged-vista', error which means it keeps matching the review edit page instead of the custom filter page, and I cannot figure out why since it used to work and I can't find what change might have affected this. Any help appreciated. Relevant code: class ReviewAdmin(VersionAdmin): def changelist_view(self, request, extra_context=None, **kwargs): from django.contrib.admin.views.main import ChangeList cl = ChangeList(request, self.model, list(self.list_display), self.list_display_links, self.list_filter, self.date_hierarchy, self.search_fields, self.list_select_related, self.list_per_page, self.list_editable, self) cl.formset = None if extra_context is None: extra_context = {} if kwargs.get('only_tagged'): tag = kwargs.get('tag') cl.result_list = cl.result_list.filter(tags__icontains=tag) extra_context['extra_filter'] = "Only tagged %s" % tag extra_context['cl'] = cl return super(ReviewAdmin, self).changelist_view(request, extra_context=extra_context) def get_urls(self): from django.conf.urls.defaults import patterns, url urls = super(ReviewAdmin, self).get_urls() def wrap(view): def wrapper(*args, **kwargs): return self.admin_site.admin_view(view)(*args, **kwargs) return update_wrapper(wrapper, view) info = self.model._meta.app_label, self.model._meta.module_name my_urls = patterns('', # make edit work from tagged filter list view # redirect to normal edit view url(r'^only-tagged-\w+/(?P
.+)/$', redirect_to, {'url': "/admin/"+self.model._meta.app_label+"/"+self.model._meta.module_name+"/%(id)s"} ), # tagged filter list view url(r'^only-tagged-(P<tag>\w+)/$', self.admin_site.admin_view(self.changelist_view), {'only_tagged':True}, name="changelist_view"), ) return my_urls + urls Edit: Original issue fixed. I now receive 'Cannot filter a query once a slice has been taken.' for line: cl.result_list = cl.result_list.filter(tags__icontains=tag) I'm not sure where this result list is sliced, before tag filter is applied. Edit2: It's because of the self.list_per_page in ChangeList declaration. However didn't find a proper solution yet. Temp fix: if kwargs.get('only_tagged'): list_per_page = 1000000 else: list_per_page = self.list_per_page cl = ChangeList(request, self.model, list(self.list_display), self.list_display_links, self.list_filter, self.date_hierarchy, self.search_fields, self.list_select_related, list_per_page, self.list_editable, self)

  • JSON Serialization of a Django inherited model

    - by Simon Morris
    Hello, I have the following Django models class ConfigurationItem(models.Model): path = models.CharField('Path', max_length=1024) name = models.CharField('Name', max_length=1024, blank=True) description = models.CharField('Description', max_length=1024, blank=True) active = models.BooleanField('Active', default=True) is_leaf = models.BooleanField('Is a Leaf item', default=True) class Location(ConfigurationItem): address = models.CharField(max_length=1024, blank=True) phoneNumber = models.CharField(max_length=255, blank=True) url = models.URLField(blank=True) read_acl = models.ManyToManyField(Group, default=None) write_acl = models.ManyToManyField(Group, default=None) alert_group= models.EmailField(blank=True) The full model file is here if it helps. You can see that Company is a child class of ConfigurationItem. I'm trying to use JSON serialization using either the django.core.serializers.serializer or the WadofStuff serializer. Both serializers give me the same problem... >>> from cmdb.models import * >>> from django.core import serializers >>> serializers.serialize('json', [ ConfigurationItem.objects.get(id=7)]) '
"extension_attribute_10": "

2010-05-19 14:42:53", "extension_attribute_11": false, "extension_attribute_5": "", "extension_attribute_2": "", "extension_attribute_3": "", "extension_attribute_1": "", "extension_attribute_6": "", "extension_attribute_7": "", "extension_attribute_4": "
"extension_attribute_8": "", "extension_attribute_9": "
"}}]' >>> serializers.serialize('json', [ Location.objects.get(id=7)]) '
' >>> The problem is that serializing the Company model only gives me the fields directly associated with that model, not the fields from it's parent object. Is there a way of altering this behaviour or should I be looking at building a dictionary of objects and using simplejson to format the output? Thanks in advance ~sm

  • Django: Save data from form in DB

    - by Anry
    I have a model: class Cost(models.Model): project = models.ForeignKey(Project) cost = models.FloatField() date = models.DateField() For the model I created a class form: class CostForm(ModelForm): class Meta: model = Cost fields = ['date', 'cost'] view.py: def cost(request, offset): if request.method == 'POST': #HOW save data in DB? return HttpResponseRedirect('/') else: form = CostForm() In the template file determined:  Date:<input type="text" name="date" value={{ current_date }} id="date" /> Cost:

  How save data from form in DB? P.S. offset = project name Model: class Project(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=150) url = models.URLField() manager = models.ForeignKey(User) timestamp = models.DateTimeField() I tried to write: def cost(request, offset): if request.method == 'POST': form = CostForm(request.POST) if form.is_valid(): instance = form.save(commit=False) instance.project = Project.objects.filter(title=offset) instance.date = request.date instance.cost = request.cost instance.save() return HttpResponseRedirect('/') else: form = CostForm() But it does not work :(

  • django: control json serialization

    - by abolotnov
    Is there a way to control json serialization in django? Simple code below will return serialized object in json: co = Collection.objects.all() c = serializers.serialize('json',co) The json will look similar to this: [
} },
} },
} } ] You can see it's serializing it in a way that you are able to re-create the whole model, shall you want to do this at some point - fair enough, but not very handy for simple JS ajax in my case: I want bring the traffic to minimum and make the whole thing little clearer. What I did is I created a view that passes the object to a .json template and the template will do something like this to generate "nicer" json output: [ {% if collections %} {% for c in collections %
c.id
c.sortOrder
{{c.name}}
{{c.urlName}}"}{% if not forloop.last %},{% endif %} {% endfor %} {% endif %} ] This does work and the output is much (?) nicer: [
},
},
} ] However, I'm bothered by the fast that my solution uses templates (an extra step in processing and possible performance impact) and it will take manual work to maintain shall I update the model, for example. I'm thinking json generating should be part of the model (correct me if I'm wrong) and done with either native python-json and django implementation but can't figure how to make it strip the bits that I don't want. One more thing - even when I restrict it to a set of fields to serialize, it will keep the id always outside the element container and instead present it as "pk" outside of it.

  • Global name not defined error in Django/Python trying to set foreignkey

    - by Mark
    Summary: I define a method createPage within a file called PageTree.py that takes a Source model object and a string. The method tries to generate a Page model object. It tries to set the Page model object's foreignkey to refer to the Source model object which was passed in. This throws a NameError exception! I'm trying to represent a website which is structured like a tree. I define the Django models Page and Source, Page representing a node on the tree and Source representing the contents of the page. (You can probably skip over these, this is a basic tree implementation using doubly linked nodes). class Page(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=50) parent = models.ForeignKey("self", related_name="children", null=True); firstChild = models.ForeignKey("self", related_name="origin", null=True); nextSibling = models.ForeignKey("self", related_name="prevSibling", null=True); previousSibling = models.ForeignKey("self", related_name="nxtSibling", null=True); source = models.ForeignKey("Source"); class Source(models.Model): #A source that is non dynamic will be refered to as a static source #Dynamic sources contain locations that are names of functions #Static sources contain locations that are places on disk name = models.CharField(primary_key=True, max_length=50) isDynamic = models.BooleanField() location = models.CharField(max_length=100); I've coded a python program called PageTree.py which allows me to request nodes from the database and manipulate the structure of the tree. Here is the trouble making method: def createPage(pageSource, pageName): page = Page() page.source = pageSource page.name = pageName page.save() return page I'm running this program in a shell through manage.py in Windows 7 manage.py shell from mysite.PageManager.models import Page, Source from mysite.PageManager.PageTree import * ... create someSource = Source(), populate the fields, and save it ... createPage(someSource, "test") ... NameError: global name 'source' is not defined When I type in the function definition for createPage into the shell by hand, the call works without error. This is driving me bonkers and help is appreciated.

  • How to build a Django form which requires a delay to be re-submitted ?

    - by pierre-guillaume-degans
    Hey, In order to avoid spamming, I would like to add a waiting time to re-submit a form (i.e. the user should wait a few seconds to submit the form, except the first time that this form is submitted). To do that, I added a timestamp to my form (and a security_hash field containing the timestamp plus the settings.SECRET_KEY which ensures that the timestamp is not fiddled with). This look like: class MyForm(forms.Form): timestamp = forms.IntegerField(widget=forms.HiddenInput) security_hash = forms.CharField(min_length=40, max_length=40, widget=forms.HiddenInput) # + some other fields.. # + methods to build the hash and to clean the timestamp... # (it is based on django.contrib.comments.forms.CommentSecurityForm) def clean_timestamp(self): """Make sure the delay is over (5 seconds).""" ts = self.cleaned_data["timestamp"] if not time.time() - ts > 5: raise forms.ValidationError("Timestamp check failed") return ts # etc... This works fine. However there is still an issue: the timestamp is checked the first time the form is submitted by the user, and I need to avoid this. Any idea to fix it ? Thank you ! :-)

  • (Quaternion based) Trouble moving foward based on model rotation

    - by ChocoMan
    Using quaternions, I'm having trouble moving my model in its facing direction. Currently the model moves can move in all cardinal directions with no problems. The problem comes when I rotate the move as it still travelling in the direction of world space. Meaning, if I'm moving forward, backward or any other direction while rotating the model, the model acts like its a figure skater spinning while traveling in the same direction. How do I update the direction of travel proper with the facing direction of the model? Rotates model on Y-axis: Yaw = pController.ThumbSticks.Right.X * MathHelper.ToRadians(speedAngleMAX); AddRotation = Quaternion.CreateFromYawPitchRoll(yaw, 0, 0); ModelLoad.MRotation *= AddRotation; MOrientation = Matrix.CreateFromQuaternion(ModelLoad.MRotation); Moves model forward: // Move Forward if (pController.IsButtonDown(Buttons.LeftThumbstickUp)) { SpeedX = (float)(Math.Sin(ModelLoad.ModelRotation)) * FWDSpeedMax * pController.ThumbSticks.Left.Y * (float)gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds; SpeedZ = (float)(Math.Cos(ModelLoad.ModelRotation)) * FWDSpeedMax * pController.ThumbSticks.Left.Y * (float)gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalSeconds; // Update model position ModelLoad._modelPos += Vector3.Forward * SpeedZ; ModelLoad._modelPos += Vector3.Left * SpeedX; }

  • Django app that can provide user friendly, multiple / mass file upload functionality to other apps

    - by hopla
    Hi, I'm going to be honest: this is a question I asked on the Django-Users mailinglist last week. Since I didn't get any replies there yet, I'm reposting it on Stack Overflow in the hope that it gets more attention here. I want to create an app that makes it easy to do user friendly, multiple / mass file upload in your own apps. With user friendly I mean upload like Gmail, Flickr, ... where the user can select multiple files at once in the browse file dialog. The files are then uploaded sequentially or in parallel and a nice overview of the selected files is shown on the page with a progress bar next to them. A 'Cancel' upload button is also a possible option. All that niceness is usually solved by using a Flash object. Complete solutions are out there for the client side, like: SWFUpload http://swfupload.org/ , FancyUpload http://digitarald.de/project/fancyupload/ , YUI 2 Uploader http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/uploader/ and probably many more. Ofcourse the trick is getting those solutions integrated in your project. Especially in a framework like Django, double so if you want it to be reusable. So, I have a few ideas, but I'm neither an expert on Django nor on Flash based upload solutions. I'll share my ideas here in the hope of getting some feedback from more knowledgeable and experienced people. (Or even just some 'I want this too!' replies :) ) You will notice that I make a few assumptions: this is to keep the (initial) scope of the application under control. These assumptions are of course debatable: All right, my idea's so far: If you want to mass upload multiple files, you are going to have a model to contain each file in. I.e. the model will contain one FileField or one ImageField. Models with multiple (but ofcourse finite) amount of FileFields/ ImageFields are not in need of easy mass uploading imho: if you have a model with 100 FileFields you are doing something wrong :) Examples where you would want my envisioned kind of mass upload: An app that has just one model 'Brochure' with a file field, a title field (dynamically created from the filename) and a date_added field. A photo gallery app with models 'Gallery' and 'Photo'. You pick a Gallery to add pictures to, upload the pictures and new Photo objects are created and foreign keys set to the chosen Gallery. It would be nice to be able to configure or extend the app for your favorite Flash upload solution. We can pick one of the three above as a default, but implement the app so that people can easily add additional implementations (kinda like Django can use multiple databases). Let it be agnostic to any particular client side solution. If we need to pick one to start with, maybe pick the one with the smallest footprint? (smallest download of client side stuff) The Flash based solutions asynchronously (and either sequentially or in parallel) POST the files to a url. I suggest that url to be local to our generic app (so it's the same for every app where you use our app in). That url will go to a view provided by our generic app. The view will do the following: create a new model instance, add the file, OPTIONALLY DO EXTRA STUFF and save the instance. DO EXTRA STUFF is code that the app that uses our app wants to run. It doesn't have to provide any extra code, if the model has just a FileField/ImageField the standard view code will do the job. But most app will want to do extra stuff I think, like filling in the other fields: title, date_added, foreignkeys, manytomany, ... I have not yet thought about a mechanism for DO EXTRA STUFF. Just wrapping the generic app view came to mind, but that is not developer friendly, since you would have to write your own url pattern and your own view. Then you have to tell the Flash solutions to use a new url etc... I think something like signals could be used here? Forms/Admin: I'm still very sketchy on how all this could best be integrated in the Admin or generic Django forms/widgets/... (and this is were my lack of Django experience shows): In the case of the Gallery/Photo app: You could provide a mass Photo upload widget on the Gallery detail form. But what if the Gallery instance is not saved yet? The file upload view won't be able to set the foreignkeys on the Photo instances. I see that the auth app, when you create a user, first asks for username and password and only then provides you with a bigger form to fill in emailadres, pick roles etc. We could do something like that. In the case of an app with just one model: How do you provide a form in the Django admin to do your mass upload? You can't do it with the detail form of your model, that's just for one model instance. There's probably dozens more questions that need to be answered before I can even start on this app. So please tell me what you think! Give me input! What do you like? What not? What would you do different? Is this idea solid? Where is it not? Thank you!

  • why isn't my id showing up in django admin list?

    - by FurtiveFelon
    Hi all, I have a class Task(models.Model), and i didn't define id field explicitly (since it defines automatically for you). I checked in the database, it exists for the Task. Now i would like to display it in the list via list_display property in admin.ModelAdmin. I have a bunch of things in there, only id is not showing up for any of the rows i have. Everything else works fine. Anyone know anything special i have to do to get id to display? Thanks a lot! Jason

  • Model value not being set on return from View to Controller

    I have a boolean model variable who's value is supposed to be set to TRUE in order to perform a process on return back into the Controller. The last alert shows that the value of the bool variable is "true". However, when I do page source views of the hidden variable, below is the result. The values of the hidden variable when the page loads and when the last alert button finishes are as follows: My local machine: The remote machine: As you can see, the value on my machine is set to true when the process executes. However, on the remote machine, it is set to false where it then doesn't excute. Why isn't the value in the model being returned as TRUE on the remote machine?

  • Implementing a popularity algorithm in Django

    - by TheLizardKing
    I am creating a site similar to reddit and hacker news that has a database of links and votes. I am implementing hacker news' popularity algorithm and things are going pretty swimmingly until it comes to actually gathering up these links and displaying them. The algorithm is simple: Y Combinator's Hacker News: Popularity = (p - 1) / (t + 2)^1.5` Votes divided by age factor. Where` p : votes (points) from users. t : time since submission in hours. p is subtracted by 1 to negate submitter's vote. Age factor is (time since submission in hours plus two) to the power of 1.5.factor is (time since submission in hours plus two) to the power of 1.5. I asked a very similar question over yonder http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1964395/complex-ordering-in-django but instead of contemplating my options I choose one and tried to make it work because that's how I did it with PHP/MySQL but I now know Django does things a lot differently. My models look something (exactly) like this class Link(models.Model): category = models.ForeignKey(Category) user = models.ForeignKey(User) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add = True) modified = models.DateTimeField(auto_now = True) fame = models.PositiveIntegerField(default = 1) title = models.CharField(max_length = 256) url = models.URLField(max_length = 2048) def __unicode__(self): return self.title class Vote(models.Model): link = models.ForeignKey(Link) user = models.ForeignKey(User) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add = True) modified = models.DateTimeField(auto_now = True) karma_delta = models.SmallIntegerField() def __unicode__(self): return str(self.karma_delta) and my view: def index(request): popular_links = Link.objects.select_related().annotate(karma_total = Sum('vote__karma_delta')) return render_to_response('links/index.html', {'links': popular_links}) Now from my previous question, I am trying to implement the algorithm using the sorting function. An answer from that question seems to think I should put the algorithm in the select and sort then. I am going to paginate these results so I don't think I can do the sorting in python without grabbing everything. Any suggestions on how I could efficiently do this? EDIT This isn't working yet but I think it's a step in the right direction: from django.shortcuts import render_to_response from linkett.apps.links.models import * def index(request): popular_links = Link.objects.select_related() popular_links = popular_links.extra( select = { 'karma_total': 'SUM(vote.karma_delta)', 'popularity': '(karma_total - 1) / POW(2, 1.5)', }, order_by = ['-popularity'] ) return render_to_response('links/index.html', {'links': popular_links}) This errors out into: Caught an exception while rendering: column "karma_total" does not exist LINE 1: SELECT ((karma_total - 1) / POW(2, 1.5)) AS "popularity", (S... EDIT 2 Better error? TemplateSyntaxError: Caught an exception while rendering: missing FROM-clause entry for table "vote" LINE 1: SELECT ((vote.karma_total - 1) / POW(2, 1.5)) AS "popularity... My index.html is simply: {% block content %} {% for link in links %} karma-up {{ link.karma_total }} karma-down {{ link.title }} Posted by {{ link.user }} to {{ link.category }} at {{ link.created }} {% empty %} No Links {% endfor %} {% endblock content %} EDIT 3 So very close! Again, all these answers are great but I am concentrating on a particular one because I feel it works best for my situation. from django.db.models import Sum from django.shortcuts import render_to_response from linkett.apps.links.models import * def index(request): popular_links = Link.objects.select_related().extra( select = { 'popularity': '(SUM(links_vote.karma_delta) - 1) / POW(2, 1.5)', }, tables = ['links_link', 'links_vote'], order_by = ['-popularity'], ) return render_to_response('links/test.html', {'links': popular_links}) Running this I am presented with an error hating on my lack of group by values. Specifically: TemplateSyntaxError at / Caught an exception while rendering: column "links_link.id" must appear in the GROUP BY clause or be used in an aggregate function LINE 1: ...karma_delta) - 1) / POW(2, 1.5)) AS "popularity", "links_lin... Not sure why my links_link.id wouldn't be in my group by but I am not sure how to alter my group by, django usually does that.

  • How to deal with data on the model specific to the technology being used?

    - by user1620696
    There are some cases where some of the data on a class of the domain model of an application seems to be dependent on the technology being used. One example of this is the following: suppose we are building one application in .NET such that there's the need of an Employee class. Suppose further that we are going to implement relational database, then the Employee has a primary key right? So that the classe would be something like public class Employee { public int EmployeeID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } ... } Now, that EmployeeID is dependent on the technology right? That's something that has to do with the way we've choose to persist our data. Should we write down a class independent of such things? If we do it this way, how should we work? I think I would need to map all the time between domain model and persistence specific types, but I'm not sure.

  • Developing a Cost Model for Cloud Applications

    - by BuckWoody
    Note - please pay attention to the date of this post. As much as I attempt to make the information below accurate, the nature of distributed computing means that components, units and pricing will change over time. The definitive costs for Microsoft Windows Azure and SQL Azure are located here, and are more accurate than anything you will see in this post: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/offers/ When writing software that is run on a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering like Windows Azure / SQL Azure, one of the questions you must answer is how much the system will cost. I will not discuss the comparisons between on-premise costs (which are nigh impossible to calculate accurately) versus cloud costs, but instead focus on creating a general model for estimating costs for a given application. You should be aware that there are (at this writing) two billing mechanisms for Windows and SQL Azure: “Pay-as-you-go” or consumption, and “Subscription” or commitment. Conceptually, you can consider the former a pay-as-you-go cell phone plan, where you pay by the unit used (at a slightly higher rate) and the latter as a standard cell phone plan where you commit to a contract and thus pay lower rates. In this post I’ll stick with the pay-as-you-go mechanism for simplicity, which should be the maximum cost you would pay. From there you may be able to get a lower cost if you use the other mechanism. In any case, the model you create should hold. Developing a good cost model is essential. As a developer or architect, you’ll most certainly be asked how much something will cost, and you need to have a reliable way to estimate that. Businesses and Organizations have been used to paying for servers, software licenses, and other infrastructure as an up-front cost, and power, people to the systems and so on as an ongoing (and sometimes not factored) cost. When presented with a new paradigm like distributed computing, they may not understand the true cost/value proposition, and that’s where the architect and developer can guide the conversation to make a choice based on features of the application versus the true costs. The two big buckets of use-types for these applications are customer-based and steady-state. In the customer-based use type, each successful use of the program results in a sale or income for your organization. Perhaps you’ve written an application that provides the spot-price of foo, and your customer pays for the use of that application. In that case, once you’ve estimated your cost for a successful traversal of the application, you can build that into the price you charge the user. It’s a standard restaurant model, where the price of the meal is determined by the cost of making it, plus any profit you can make. In the second use-type, the application will be used by a more-or-less constant number of processes or users and no direct revenue is attached to the system. A typical example is a customer-tracking system used by the employees within your company. In this case, the cost model is often created “in reverse” - meaning that you pilot the application, monitor the use (and costs) and that cost is held steady. This is where the comparison with an on-premise system becomes necessary, even though it is more difficult to estimate those on-premise true costs. For instance, do you know exactly how much cost the air conditioning is because you have a team of system administrators? This may sound trivial, but that, along with the insurance for the building, the wiring, and every other part of the system is in fact a cost to the business. There are three primary methods that I’ve been successful with in estimating the cost. None are perfect, all are demand-driven. The general process is to lay out a matrix of: components units cost per unit and then multiply that times the usage of the system, based on which components you use in the program. That sounds a bit simplistic, but using those metrics in a calculation becomes more detailed. In all of the methods that follow, you need to know your application. The components for a PaaS include computing instances, storage, transactions, bandwidth and in the case of SQL Azure, database size. In most cases, architects start with the first model and progress through the other methods to gain accuracy. Simple Estimation The simplest way to calculate costs is to architect the application (even UML or on-paper, no coding involved) and then estimate which of the components you’ll use, and how much of each will be used. Microsoft provides two tools to do this - one is a simple slider-application located here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/pricing-calculator/ The other is a tool you download to create an “Return on Investment” (ROI) spreadsheet, which has the advantage of leading you through various questions to estimate what you plan to use, located here: https://roianalyst.alinean.com/msft/AutoLogin.do?d=176318219048082115 You can also just create a spreadsheet yourself with a structure like this: Program Element Azure Component Unit of Measure Cost Per Unit Estimated Use of Component Total Cost Per Component Cumulative Cost Of course, the consideration with this model is that it is difficult to predict a system that is not running or hasn’t even been developed. Which brings us to the next model type. Measure and Project A more accurate model is to actually write the code for the application, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which can run entirely disconnected from Azure. The code should be instrumented to estimate the use of the application components, logging to a local file on the development system. A series of unit and integration tests should be run, which will create load on the test system. You can use standard development concepts to track this usage, and even use Windows Performance Monitor counters. The best place to start with this method is to use the Windows Azure Diagnostics subsystem in your code, which you can read more about here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sumitm/archive/2009/11/18/introducing-windows-azure-diagnostics.aspx This set of API’s greatly simplifies tracking the application, and in fact you can use this information for more than just a cost model. After you have the tracking logs, you can plug the numbers into ay of the tools above, which should give a representative cost or in some cases a unit cost. The consideration with this model is that the SDK fabric is not a one-to-one comparison with performance on the actual Windows Azure fabric. Those differences are usually smaller, but they do need to be considered. Also, you may not be able to accurately predict the load on the system, which might lead to an architectural change, which changes the model. This leads us to the next, most accurate method for a cost model. Sample and Estimate Using standard statistical and other predictive math, once the application is deployed you will get a bill each month from Microsoft for your Azure usage. The bill is quite detailed, and you can export the data from it to do analysis, and using methods like regression and so on project out into the future what the costs will be. I normally advise that the architect also extrapolate a unit cost from those metrics as well. This is the information that should be reported back to the executives that pay the bills: the past cost, future projected costs, and unit cost “per click” or “per transaction”, as your case warrants. The challenge here is in the model itself - statistical methods are not foolproof, and the larger the sample (in this case I recommend the entire population, not a smaller sample) is key. • Ruby on rails model and controllers inside of different namespaces

    - by Nelson LaQuet
    OK. This is insane. I'm new to RoR and I really want to get into it as everything about it that I have seen so far makes it more appealing to the type of work that I do. However, I can't seem to accomplish a very simple thing with RoR. I want these controlers: /admin/blog/entries (index/show/edit/delete) /admin/blog/categories (index/show/edit/delete) /admin/blog/comments (index/show/edit/delete) ... and so on And these models: Blog::Entry (table: blog_entries) Blog::Category (table: blog_categories) Blog::Comments (table: blog_comments) ... and so on Now, I have already gone though quite a bit of misery to make this work. My first attempt was with generating scaffolding (I'm using 2.2.2). I generated my scaffolding, but had to move my model, then fix the references to the model in my controller (see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/903258/ruby-on-rails-model-inside-namespace-cant-be-found-in-controller). That is already a big of a pain, but hey, I got it to work. Now though form_for won't work and I cannot figure out how to use the url helpers (I have no idea what these are called... they are the automatically generated methods that return URLs to controllers associated with a model). I cannot figure out what their name is. My model is Blog::Entries. I have tried to mess with the route.rb's map's resource method, but no luck. When I attempt to use form_for with my model, I get this error undefined method `blog_entries_path' for #<ActionView::Base:0xb6848080> Now. This is really quite frustrating. I am not going to completely destroy my code's organization in order to use this framework, and if I cannot figure out how to accomplish this simple task (I have been researching this for at least 5 hours) then I simply cannot continue. Are there any ideas on how to accomplish this? Thanks EDIT Here are my routes: admin_blog_entries GET /admin_blog_entries {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"index"} formatted_admin_blog_entries GET /admin_blog_entries.:format {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"index"} POST /admin_blog_entries {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"create"} POST /admin_blog_entries.:format {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"create"} new_admin_blog_entry GET /admin_blog_entries/new {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"new"} formatted_new_admin_blog_entry GET /admin_blog_entries/new.:format {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"new"} edit_admin_blog_entry GET /admin_blog_entries/:id/edit {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"edit"} formatted_edit_admin_blog_entry GET /admin_blog_entries/:id/edit.:format {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"edit"} admin_blog_entry GET /admin_blog_entries/:id {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"show"} formatted_admin_blog_entry GET /admin_blog_entries/:id.:format {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"show"} PUT /admin_blog_entries/:id {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"update"} PUT /admin_blog_entries/:id.:format {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"update"} DELETE /admin_blog_entries/:id {:controller=>"admin_blog_entries", :action=>"destroy"} DELE

  • Installation requirements of django installing in hostgator dedicated server

    - by jaypabs
    First, before I install OSQA on my dedicated server at hostgator, I want to know the requirements. I don't want to screw up my server so it's better to ask question first. I have read a lot of tutorial on the internet regarding Django but I want to clarify something before I proceed. On my dedicated server I don't use FCGI. Instead I use Mod SuPHP. A lot of tutorial is talking about installing python using FCGI. My question is if it is safe to install Python if I'm using SuPHP? Is it safe to use the tutorial on this link: http://wiki.osqa.net/display/docs/Installing+OSQA+on+CentOS6?focusedCommentId=4784144 Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Custom model in ASP.NET MVC controller: Custom display message for Date DataType

    - by Rita
    Hi I have an ASP.NET MVC Page that i have to display the fields in customized Text. For that I have built a CustomModel RequestViewModel with the following fields. Description, Event, UsageDate Corresponding to these my custom Model has the below code. So that, the DisplayName is displayed on the ASP.NET MVC View page. Now being the Description and Event string Datatype, both these fields are displaying Custom DisplayMessage. But I have problem with Date Datatype. Instead of "Date of Use of Slides", it is still displaying UsageDate from the actualModel. Anybody faced this issue with DateDatatype? Appreciate your responses. Custom Model: [Required(ErrorMessage="Please provide a description")] [DisplayName("Detail Description")] [StringLength(250, ErrorMessage = "Description cannot exceed 250 chars")] // also need min length 30 public string Description { get; set; } [Required(ErrorMessage="Please specify the name or location")] [DisplayName("Name/Location of the Event")] [StringLength(250, ErrorMessage = "Name/Location cannot exceed 250 chars")] public string Event { get; set; } [Required(ErrorMessage="Please specify a date", ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof(DateTime))] [DisplayName("Date of Use of Slides")] [DataType(DataType.Date)] public string UsageDate { get; set; } ViewCode:
<%= Html.LabelFor(model => model.Description) %> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Description) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.Description) %>

<%= Html.LabelFor(model => model.Event) %> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Event) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.Event) %>

<%= Html.LabelFor(model => model.UsageDate) %> <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.UsageDate) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.UsageDate) %>

  • CentOS 6.5 as WebServer for Django Dev

    - by Charlesliam
    During CentOS 6.5 Installation I choose WebServer type for this computer. The server has a static IP address 192.168.111.100. The CentOS was updated I managed to install virtualenv with Python 2.7. Within the virtualenv, I'll be using Django Framework. After I tried to run the command using root user python manage.py runserver 0.0.0.0:8000 I can't see the website from other computer within the LAN when I try to type 192.168.111.100:8000/admin on my browser. I already disable firewall using service iptables stop I can ping the 192.168.111.100 and I have a good feedback with nslookup. What seems the problem of my config?

  • django + wsgi + suexec + userdir + apache?

    - by Jayen
    I've got a django 1.1 website I want to run in wsgi (as that seems to be the recommended deployment on apache). I want it to run as the www user (apache is running as www-data). I would ideally like this to work out of http://hostname/~www/ (~www/public_html) as well as http://virtualhostname/. I also want this to work for other users who may later use wsgi. Can I make this happen? I've been staring at docs trying to figure where to start, but I'm having trouble combining userdir and wsgi to let me run ~xxx/public_html/index.wsgi as user xxx, for every user xxx.

  • Different settings for secure & non-secure versions of Django site using WSGI

    - by Jordan Reiter
    I have a Django website where some of the URLs need to be served over HTTPS and some over a normal connection. It's running on Apache and using WSGI. Here's the config: <VirtualHost example.org:80> ServerName example.org DocumentRoot /var/www/html/mysite WSGIDaemonProcess mysite WSGIProcessGroup mysite WSGIScriptAlias / /path/to/mysite/conferencemanager.wsgi </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName example.org DocumentRoot /var/www/html/mysite WSGIProcessGroup mysite SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /etc/httpd/certs/aace.org.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/httpd/certs/aace.org.key SSLCertificateChainFile /etc/httpd/certs/gd_bundle.crt WSGIScriptAlias / /path/to/mysite/conferencemanager_secure.wsgi </VirtualHost> When I restart the server, the first site that gets called -- https or http -- appears to select which WSGI script alias gets used. I just need a few settings to be different for the secure server, which is why I'm using a different WSGI script. Alternatively, it there's a way to change settings in the settings.py file based on whether the connection is secure or not, that would also work. Thanks

  • idle proccesses and high memory bad? uwsgi/django

    - by JimJimThe3rd
    I have a VPS with 256MB of ram. I'm running nginx, uwsgi and postgresql on Ubuntu 12.04 for a soon to be Django site. About 200MB of ram are being used despite the website not being active, the uwsgi processes seem to just be idling. Is this bad? I once heard that having a bunch of free memory isn't necessarily a good metric because it is possible that the memory in use can easily be freed up. I mean, it is possible that the server is storing commonly used "stuff" in case it is accessed but is more than happy to dump it if the ram is needed. But I'm really not sure, hence me asking this question. If it is bad I could set some of the application loading options for uwsgi like "cheap" or "idle" mode. Screenshot of my htop

  • django fcgi - call a management command with subprocess.Popen

    - by user41855
    Hi, I'm using an app called django-chronograph. It has a code of line which works in my dev environment and does not work in production: p = subprocess.Popen(['python', get_manage_py(), 'run_job', str(self.pk)]) This line crashes in production with: unknown command run_job Whereas when I run directly from command line: manage.py run_job It works fine. Interestingly it worked once when we exchanged 'python' with 'usr/bin/python'. then we restarted the server once more and it was back to old behaviour. Thus it seems as we have a python path issue. I'm not the guy who is running the server, its my app that should run and it would be great to get some help here. Attention: I'm a total noob regarding server-administration.. server environment: NGINX with FCGI-Daemon FCGI in prefork-mode
