• Scheduling a visual studio load test using powershell giving me BSOD

  I have a visual studio load test which I want to run every hour so that I can start to collect some data. To do this, I thought it would be best to make a little powershell script and put a command like this inside: Invoke-Expression -command "& '$env:VS100COMNTOOLS..\IDE\mstest.exe' /testcontainer:"C:\Users\benb\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\BBPerformanceTest\bin\Debug\HomePageOnly.loadtest"" That command works fine, but sometimes when its run I get a blue screen of death. However, when I run my load test through the visual studio GUI, I never get a BSOD. two questions: is it possible to avoid this BSOD? Is there another way I can schedule my load test? Thanks

  Hello, I found the discussion on Do you test private method informative. I have decided, that in some classes, I want to have protected methods, but test them. Some of these methods are static and short. Because most of the public methods make use of them, I will probably be able to safely remove the tests later. But for starting with a TDD approach and avoid debugging, I really want to test them. I thought of the following: Method Object as adviced in an answer seems to be overkill for this. Start with public methods and when code coverage is given by higher level tests, turn them protected and remove the tests. Inherit a class with a testable interface making protected methods public Which is best practice? Is there anything else? It seems, that JUnit automatically changes protected methods to be public, but I did not have a deeper look at it. PHP does not allow this via reflection.

  We use JUnit 3 at work and there is no ExpectedException annotation. • Determining whether a class implements a generic list in a T4 template

  I'm writing a T4 template which loads some classes from an assembly, does some analysis of the classes and then generates some code. One particular bit of analysis I need to do is to determine whether the class implements a generic list. I can do this pretty simply in C#, e.g. public class Foo : List<string> { } var t = typeof(Foo); if (t.BaseType != null && t.BaseType.IsGenericType && t.BaseType.GetGenericTypeDefinition() == typeof(List<>))) Console.WriteLine("Win"); However T4 templates use the FXCop introspection engine and so you do not have access to the .net reflection API. I've spent the past couple of hours in Reflector but still can't figure it out. Does anyone have any clues about how to do this?

Lets say a v got a class: public Class MyClass { ... } And an interace: public Interface IMyInterface { MyClass PropertyOfMyClass {get;} } and now a generic class: public class MyGeneric<T> where T:MyClass { T PropertyOfMyClass { get{return ...;} } } Until here everythings fine and compiles right. But this will break at compilation time: public class MyGeneric<T>:IMyInterace where T:MyClass { T PropertyOfMyClass { get{return ...;} } } Saying that MyGeneric does not implements method of IMyInterface. But obviously it does, not ?

• Django GenericRelation doesn't save related object's id - is this a bug or am I doing it wrong?

  I have a model with a generic relation (call it A), when creating an instance of this object I pass an instance of another model (call it B) as the initializer of the content_object field (via kwargs of the constructor). If I don't save B before creating A then when saving A the content_object_id is saved to the db as NULL. If I save B before passing it to the constructor of A then everything's allright. It's not logical. I assumed that the ID of the related object (B) is fetched when doing A.save() and it should throw some kind of an exception if B isn't saved yet but it just fails silently. I don't like the current solution (saving B beforhand) because we don't know yet if I will be always willing to keep the object, not just scrap it, and there are performance considerations - what if I will add some another data and save it once more shortly after. class BaseNodeData(models.Model): ... extnodedata_content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType, null=True) extnodedata_object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField(null=True) extnodedata = generic.GenericForeignKey(ct_field='extnodedata_content_type', fk_field='extnodedata_object_id') class MarkupNodeData(models.Model): raw_content = models.TextField() Suppose we do: markup = MarkupNodeData(raw_content='...') base = BaseNodeData(..., extnodedata=markup) markup.save() base.save() # both records are inserted to the DB but base is stored with extnodedata_object_id=NULL markup = MarkupNodeData(raw_content='...') base = BaseNodeData(..., extnodedata=markup) base.save() markup.save() # no exception is thrown and everything is the same as above markup = MarkupNodeData(raw_content='...') markup.save() base = BaseNodeData(..., extnodedata=markup) base.save() # this works as expected Of course I can do it this way, but it doesn't change anything: base = BaseNodeData(...) base.extnodedata = markup My question is - is this a bug in django which I should report or maybe I'm doing something wrong. • Throwing special type of exception to terminate unit test

  Assume I want to write a unit test to test a particular piece of functionality that is implemented within a method. If I wanted to execute the method completely, I would have to do some extra set up work (mock objects expectations etc.). Instead of doing that I use the following approach: - I set up the expectations I'm interested in verifying and then make the tested method throw a special type of exception (e.g. TerminateTestException). - Further down in the unit test I catch the exception and verify the mock object expectations. It works fine but I'm not sure it is good practice. I do not do this regularly, only in cases where it saves me time and effort. One thing that comes to mind as an argument against using this is that throwing exceptions takes long time so the tests execute slower than if I used a different approach.

  I'm looking for a way to write an SQL statement in C# targeting different providers. A typical example of SQL statements differentiating is the LIMIT in PostgreSQL vs. TOP in MSSQL. Is the only way to solve SQL-syntax like the two above to write if-statements depending on which provider the user selects or using try catch statements as flow control (LIMIT didn't work, I'll try TOP instead)? I've seen the LINQ Take method, but I'm wondering if one can do this without LINQ? In other words, does C# have some generic SQL Provider class that I have failed to find that can be used?

Instead I have to write, ArrayList<String>[] alist = new ArrayList[10]; or I have to create List of ArrayLists. Aren't arrays supposed to be more efficient than ArrayLists? • How to TDD test that objects are being added to a collection if the collection is private?

  Assume that I planned to write a class that worked something like this: public class GameCharacter { private Collection<CharacterEffect> _collection; public void Add(CharacterEffect e) { ... } public void Remove(CharacterEffect e) { ... } public void Contains(CharacterEffect e) { ... } } When added an effect does something to the character and is then added to the _collection. When it is removed the effect reverts the change to the character and is removed from the _collection. It's easy to test if the effect was applied to the character, but how do I test that the effect was added to _collection? What test could I write to start constructing this class. I could write a test where Contains would return true for a certain effect being in _collection, but I can't arrange a case where that function would return true because I haven't implemented the Add method that is needed to place things in _collection. Ok, so since Contains is dependent on having Add working, then why don't I try to create Add first. Well for my first test I need to try and figure out if the effect was added to the _collection. How would I do that? The only way to see if an effect is in _collection is with the Contains function. The only way that I could think to test this would be to use a FakeCollection that Mocks the Add, Remove, and Contains of a real collection, but I don't want _collection being affected by outside sources. I don't want to add a setEffects(Collection effects) function, because I do not want the class to have that functionality. The one thing that I am thinking could work is this: public class GameCharacter<C extends Collection> { private Collection<CharacterEffect> _collection; public GameCharacter() { _collection = new C<CharacterEffect>(); } } But, that is just silly making me declare what some private data structures type is on every declaration of the character. Is there a way for me to test this without breaking TDD principles while still allowing me to keep my collection private?

• SMTP server (IIS) is running but can't test it with telnet

  I have a Windows 2003 web edition server that I can't seem to get the SMTP relay working. BT4 shows port 25 open. When I try use telnet to test it on my desktop I get: Connecting To XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed. As mentioned, this a test-server in LAN, CPU load is never crossed 0.10 and memory usage is also below 25% (System has 2GB RAM and ubuntu-server installed) So if you find its time-confusing to help me out, please atleast drop a hint. • Testing home directory scripts by setting $HOME to the location of the test directory

  I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge. The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home export HOME=~/testing/home cd ~ screen -S testing-home # start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc. # test revisions However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about? Is there a much better way to do this sort of thing?

• how to test lan network speed with ps3

  I am having a heck of a time trying to get videos streaming to my PS3. I want to know if there is some way to test the speed between my PC and ps3 to see if that is the issue. For some reason when things get really slow between the ps3 and my computer (it's a wired connection through a switch), the wireless internet on completely different computer gets slow. I don't know what's causing what, but I don't know why there should be any correlation between internet speed on a wirelessly connected laptop and the LAN speed between a wired ps3 and computer.
