• Is there a way to disable the hardware on/off switch for the Wireless interface?

  I have an HP 520 and is running the latest Ubuntu 11.10. The hardware works fine with Ubuntu with one exception: The device has a hardware switch for turning the wifi on and off. Every time the wi-fi is disabled through the hardware switch, I am unable to bring it on again. The message on the networking popup would be device not ready. What I am looking for is a way to disable the hardware switch altogether so that when users accidentally press the button, the wifi would not be disabled. There is no setting to disable the switch in the BIOS. I am currently using the AXL snippet <firstname>FirstNameFilter</firstname><lastname>LastNameFilter</lastname> This will work as & between two filters. for example my filter is FirstNameFilter = sam* LastNameFilter = joy* this will return the entries which satisfies both the filters. But i want to filter in such a way that we need to or this filter like i need to get the users with First Name is sam* or last name = joy*. Whether anyone did such AXL programming?   I'm looking forward to speaking in Atlanta on the 24th, will be fun to get back down that way to visit with some friends and present two topics that I really enjoy. First, an introduction to performance tuning. Performance tuning is a very wide and deep topic and we're staying close to the surface. I direct this class for newbie sql users who have less than 2 years of experience. It's all the things I wish someone would have told me in my first 2 years about what to look for when the database was slow...or allegedly slow I should say. We'll cover using profiler to find slow performing queries and how to save the data off to a table as well as a tour of other features. The difference between clustered, non clustered and covering indexes. How to look at and understand an execution plan (at a high level) and finally the difference between a temp table and a table variable and what the implications are of using either one in your code. That pretty much takes up a full hour. Second presentation, Loading Data in Real Time. It's really a presentation about partitioning but with a twist that we used at work recently to solve a need to load some data quickly and put it into production with minimal downtime. We'll cover partition functions, schemes,$partition, merge, sys.partitions and show some examples of building a set of partitioned tables and using the switch statement to move it from one table to another. • Simple, manageable DNS on EC2?

  I'm working on a large network of servers sitting on EC2, and need a way for the servers to know about each other's locations in the cloud. I thought the simplest way would be to use DNS, because if I replace the EC2 instance, I simply update the DNS record, and the rest of the servers will know about it (with names like users.db.mysoft.com, routing.mysoft.com, cluster1.memcached.mysoft.com). I'm considering setting up a master DNS server on a micro/small instance to accommodate this. I'd preferably need something that's as simple as a key-value store (hostname - IP) into which the platform could remotely add/remove entries. Can I do this with BIND? Or is there a better solution?

• Hosting provider that allows you to host your own VM image?

  I've already looked at the 'Best Hosted VM Provider' question and checked the recommendations there, but I seem to have slightly odd requirements. Basically, I am looking for a host that allows me to host a VM image I supply (FreeBSD, which most of the suggested hosters don't support, they only seem to support various Linuxes) instead of one of their standard images. I'm a long time BSD user and have had colo BSD servers in the past so I'm pretty sure that i don't need much in the way of software support, but I'd basically like to run my server on managed hardware without having to rent the whole server. For the usage I have that would way OTT as we're talking a couple of small apps with very few users, a couple of blogs and (most importantly) email hosting for about 6-10 domains with moderate traffic levels. Oh, and reliability trumps cost to a certain extent.

• Using standard e-mail address as user system wide name

  I'm going to re-build a very old Lotus Notes infrastructure coming from 4.x towards 8.5. I'm trying to setup Domino so that all user names should be of a single string or the internet e-mail address. For example the user "John Smith/ACME" should be in the whole system jsmith or [email protected] . I still get jsmith/ACME all around. Where it is most annoying is in the NAB when creating a new message. Is there a way to get all addresses in uniform standard e-mail adress format at least in mail ? The mixup in the destination like "John Smith/ACME, [email protected]" confused the users.

• Changing frontend cache

  Our architecture consists of a front-end cache that most read only users obtain their data from directly. The front-end cache sits in front of a farm of webservers that serve pages written in PHP. We need to be able to detect certain conditions at the front-end cache level and pass those values through to the back-end via HTTP headers. For example we would like to manually tag the carrier network based on the IP address. So, for incoming traffic if the user is say coming from an IP address in the range of "41.202.192.0"/19 we would tag them as being a Orange Cameroon user by setting the appropriate HTTP request header, e.g., X-Carrier = "Orange Cameroon". Based on the setting of this header we would like to vary the cache and serve a different banner to the end user. How would you go about doing this? Keep in mind that we don't want to pollute the cache and we also don't want to create too many small cache segments. Assumptions: You can assume that the X-Carrier has already been detected in our cache. So, for the purposes of your test you can just set this value manually in your example script.

• What techniques would you use for a next generation java web application?

  I'm working at a site similar to Foursquare and Yelp, with approximately 100000 unique requests each week that generates content, growing steadily. We are currently using: Seam as Java web framework. MySQL as DB Hibernate as ORM Hibernate Search as Index EhCache for Caching. Since our site is slowly growing out of the current setup and has a lot of legacy code, it is time for us to start thinking about a major refactoring/changing setup. Web framework We are not ready to change the language but we are leaning towards Spring Web Framework, since: Seam is no more. Almost all of us have worked with Spring and liked it. DB and ORM We have done a little research and we are thinking about MongoDB. Index Do we need to have a separate Index if we use MongoDB? Cache ? So my question is basically: If you take Spring Web Framework and MongoDB into consideration, how would a good setup be for a web application that is growing and handles a lot of logged in users generating input and performing searches?

• How does one guarantee a remote client the same local IP address every time when connecting to a VPN?

  I need to configure a VPN for secure remote access to a PACS serving DICOM radiological images. The DICOM standard requires that any clients accessing the PACS must be using a fixed IP address that is pre-registered in PACS. I haven't implemented this solution before and would appreciate any guidance. I believe it should be possible to use RADIUS on the server to authenticate users connecting to the VPN and with it assign each user their own specific local subnet IP address, which would be registered with the PACS. The server runs Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2 and the VPN device is a FortiGate 60C. The What would be the best and/or simplest way to set this up?

• Using an Apt Repository for Paid Software Updates

  I'm trying to determine a way to distribute software updates for a hosted/on-site web application that may have weekly and/or monthly updates. I don't want the customers who use the on-site product to have to worry about updating it manually I just want it to download and install automatically ala Google Chrome. I'm planning on providing an OVF file with Ubuntu and the software installed and configured. My first thought on how to distributed software is to create six Apt repositories/channels (not sure which would be better at this point) that will be accessed through SSH using keys so if a customer doesn't renew their subscription we can disable their account: Beta - Used internally on test data to check the package for major defects. Internal - Used internally on live data to check the package for defects (dog fooding stage). External 1 - Deployed to 1% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 9 - Deployed to 9% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 90 - Deployed to the remaining 90% of users. Hosted - Deployed to the hosted environment. It will take a sign off at each stage to move into the next repository in case problems are reported. My questions to the community are: Has anyone tried something like this before? Can anyone see a downside to this type of a procedure? Is there a better way?

• cannot get upstart to run user job

  I am trying to get upstart start a user job during the boot of my machine. I have my conky.conf upstart config file in my $HOME/.init directory. Wenn I run "start conky" I get this error: dre@dre-laptop:~$ start conky start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.76" (uid=1000 pid=2843 comm="start conky ") interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init") dre@dre-laptop:~$ I (think I) know that this error has to do with the d-bus system (authentification). I also read (http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#id96) that ubuntu 12.10 already has the right configuration in the d-bus config file "/etc/dbus-1/system.d/Upstart.conf" to allow normal users to use upstart. dre@dre-laptop:~/.init$ cat conky.conf description "conky, a system monitor appled" start on lightdm stop on shutdown # Automatically restart process if crashed respawn # Essentially lets upstart know the process will detach itself to the background #expect fork # Start conky exec /usr/bin/conky So, who knows, what do I do wrong??? greetings Andre No one??? • Change Drobo directory permissions

  I have a Drobo unit that is connected via fire-wire to a Dell notebook. Using Ubuntu 12.04. I can not seem to change the permissions to allow all users to have read/write access to the drives. The unit is automatically mounting the volumes as my user using the system, so other applications can not access the device. I want to set up a Plex Media Server to stream music, etc... but it will not scan the drives since it can not access them. How can I change the permissions to allow everyone to read the volumes? IF I add them to the fstab as ntfs volumes, Ubuntu reports that they are not available during the boot up, likely due to the fire-wire not having found the drives yet. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• GlusterFS with CIFS, quotas and LDAP

  Has anyone had experience plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together or something similar? Here is the motivation: Disk space on multiple server regrouped using GlusterFS Centralized access using LDAP/AD and quota management using Openfiler as the GlusterFS client SMB/CIFS server for easy sharing to multiple users on Mac and Windows I know I can have Gluster installed on Openfiler (rPath Linux) successfully but Openfiler seems to be very picky on what it can use as a shared drive. Mounting the Gluster volume inside an existing share does not seem to allow quotas with the mounted folder free space. If this is not possible, is there any alternative to give the same capabilities?

• WordPress is now nicely supported on SQL Server (and SQL Azure for that matter)

  WordPress is enormously popular for blogs and full websites thanks to an awesome eco system which has built up around it, the simplicity (relatively) of getting it up and running plus the flexibility to “bend it” in all sorts of directions. Both fine technologies in their own right, but for me (and probably a fair few others) I would love to use WordPress but with the technologies I know best (aka Windows, IIS and SQL Server). However, that has proven to be actually rather tricky in practice to get working – until now. Earlier last month OmniTI released a patch for WordPress which provides SQL Server and SQL Azure support.  In parallel with that some fine folks inside Microsoft have also created http://wordpress.visitmix.com which contains information about running WordPress on the Microsoft platform with a particular focus on SQL Server and SQL Azure.  Top stuff! • Logon script in Active Directory

  I am having a weird intermittent issue for only some users. I have a logon script that maps shared drives and issues a diisclaimer everytime the user logs on to a machine. The problem lately is that the logon script will not run for the user so we get a help desk call. When one of the help desk techs log on to the machine the script then comes up. The tech then logs off and the user will log back in and they will get the logon script. I am at wits end with this issue. Any help would be appreciated. It has happend on both Windows XP and Vista 64.
