• Writing a line in a JTextArea from another class

  I'm trying to use a Method in my class 'Visual' to write a line of code into a JTextArea and it prints when I call it from 'Visual' but when I call it from 'Login' It only prints Text into the Console, not to the TextArea. private static Visual Visual; Visual.WriteLine("I'm sorry, your username or password is incorrect. • Inversion of control domain objects construction problem

  Hello! As I understand IoC-container is helpful in creation of application-level objects like services and factories. But domain-level objects should be created manually. Spring's manual tells us: "Typically one does not configure fine-grained domain objects in the container, because it is usually the responsibility of DAOs and business logic to create/load domain objects." Well. But what if my domain "fine-grained" object depends on some application-level object. For example I have an UserViewer(User user, UserConstants constants) class. There user is domain object which cannot be injected, but UserViewer also needs UserConstants which is high-level object injected by IoC-container. I want to inject UserConstants from the IoC-container, but I also need a transient runtime parameter User here. What is wrong with the design? Thanks in advance! UPDATE It seems I was not precise enough with my question. What I really need is an example how to do this: create instance of class UserViewer(User user, UserService service), where user is passed as the parameter and service is injected from IoC. If I inject UserViewer viewer then how do I pass user to it? If I create UserViewer viewer manually then how do I pass service to it?

• Web Reference Code generator template.

  I Have an internal SOAP Web service that is being called from an external REST service in .NET it works fine however I am simply passing through the SOAP objects of the REST Layer but the automatic generation of the WebReference Code in Visual Studio adds the 'field' to the end of every attribute. basically it makes my XML look all nasty. Everything works I just want to clean up my XML. Any ideas how i can change the template for the reference.cs or to make the XML generate nicely from the Web Service Objects.   I have a WCF REST Starter Kit service. The type handled by the service is a subclass of a base class. For POST requests, the base class members are not correctly populated. The class hierarchy looks like this: [DataContract] public class BaseTreeItem { [DataMember] public String Id { get; set; } [DataMember] public String Description { get; set; } } [DataContract] public class Discipline : BaseTreeItem { ... } The service definition looks like: [WebHelp(Comment = "Retrieve a Discipline")] [WebGet(UriTemplate = "discipline?id={id}")] [OperationContract] public Discipline getDiscipline(String id) { ... } [WebHelp(Comment = "Create/Update/Delete a Discipline")] [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", UriTemplate = "discipline")] public WCF_Result DisciplineMaintenance(Discipline discipline) { ... } Problem: While the GET works fine (returns the base class Id and Description), the POST does not populate Id and Description even though the XML contains the fields.   Hi to all. I'm triying to make a function that add a 'where' clause to a query based in a property and a value. This is a very simplefied version of my function. Private Function simplified(ByVal query As IQueryable(Of T), ByVal PValue As Long, ByVal p As PropertyInfo) As ObjectQuery(Of T) query = query.Where(Function(c) DirectCast(p.GetValue(c, Nothing), Long) = PValue) Dim t = query.ToList 'this line is only for testing, and here is the error raise Return query End Function The error message is: LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'System.Object CompareObjectEqual(System.Object, System.Object, Boolean)' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression. Looks like a can't use GetValue inside a linq query. Can I achieve this in other way? Post your answer in C#/VB. Chose the one that make you feel more confortable. Thanks

  I need to pass some value to enable certain code in may app (in this case is to optionally enable writing some stats to a file in certain conditions, but it might be anything generally). My java app is installed as a service. So every way I have thought of has some drawbacks: Add another param to main(): cumbersome as customers already have the tool installed, and the command line would need to be changed every time. Adding java -DmyEnvVar=A_VALUE to my command line: same as above. Set an environment variable: service should at least be restarted, and even then you must take care of what user is the service running under etc. Adding the property in the config file: I prefer not to have this visible on the config file so the user does not see it, it is something for debugging etc. So I thought maybe there is some way (or hack) to use log4j loggers to pass that value to my code. I have thought of one way already, although is very limited: Add a dummy class to my codebase com.dummy.DevOptions public class DevOptions { public static final Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(DevOptions.class); In my code, use it like this: if (DevOptions.logger.isInfoEnabled()){ //do my optional stuff } //... if (DevOptions.logger.isDebugEnabled()){ //do other stuff } This allows me to use discriminate among various values, and I could increase the number by adding more loggers to DevOptions. But I wonder whether there is a cleaner way, possibly by configuring the loggers only in log4j.xml??

• OSGI, Servlets and JPA hello world / tutorial / example

  I want to build a web application which basically is a restful web-service serving json messages. I would like it to be as simple as possible. I was thinking about using servlets (with annotations). JPA as a database layer is a must - Toplink or Hibernate. Preferably working on Tomcat. I want to have app divided into modules serving different functionality (auth service, customer service, etc..). And I would like to be able to update those modules without reinstalling whole application on the server - like eclipse plugins, user is notified (when he enters webapp's home url) that update is available, clicks it, and app is downloading and installing updated module. I think this functionality can be made with OSGI, but I can't find any example code, or tutorial with simple hello world updatable servlet providing some data from database through jpa. I'm looking for an advice: - Is OSGI the right tool for this or it can be done with something simpler? - Where can I find some examples covering topic (or topics) which I need for this project. - Which OSGI implementation would be best-simplest for this task. *My knowledge of OSGI is basic. I know how bundles are described, I understand concept of OSGI container and what it does. I have never created any OSGI app yet.

• what is the best practice approach for n-tier application development with entity framework?

  I am building an application using entity framework. I am using the T4 template to generate self tracking entities. Currently, I am thinking of creating the entity framework code in a separate project. In this same project, I would have partial classes with additional methods for the entities. I am thinking of creating a separate project for a service layer (WCF) with methods for the upper/presentation tier. The WCF layer will reference the entity framework project. The methods in the WCF layer will return the entities or accept the entities as the parameters. I am thinkg of creating a third project for the presentation layer (ASP.net), this will make calls to the WCF service but will also need to reference the entities as the WCF methods take these types as the parameters/return types. In short, i want to use the STE entities generated by the T4 template as a DTO to be used in all layers. I was originally thinking of creating a business logic layer that maps to each entities. Example: If i have a customer class, the Business Layer would have a CustomerBLL class and then methods in the customerBLL will be used by the service layer. I was also trying to create a DTO in this business layer. I however found that this approach is very time consuming and i do not see a major benefit as it would create more maintenance work. What is the best practice for n-tier application development using entity framework 4?

• iphone singleton object synchronization

  I'm working on an iphone app but this is probably a general question. I have a singleton Model class and there would be scenarios where multiple NSOperations (threads) would exist and work with the singleton object. If they all call the same method in this object, do i need to have some locking mechanism? Or can this method be executed only one at a time? I do not have a computer science background but my guess is that all threads would have their CALL to the same address (this method). Also can you please suggest a good beginner programming book that discusses general programming concepts. I don't have the brains for Knuth kinda books.

• What's a good place to unregister an observer from the notification center?

  When I add an observer to the default notification center, where would I unregister that? Example: I have a UIView subclass which lives inside a view controller. That subclass is an observer for the FooBarNotification. If this notification is posted, that view will get it. But now, the view controller decides to throw away the view. Is the best place the -dealloc method of the view itself? Are there any rules like memory management rules? For example: Must I unregister an observer where I registered it? i.e. the view registers itself in it's init method, so it should unregister itself in it's -dealloc method? (not talking about push notifications, but NSNotificationCenter)

• How do we name test methods where we are checking for more than one condition?

  I follow the technique specified in Roy Osherove's The Art Of Unit Testing book while naming test methods - MethodName_Scenario_Expectation. It suits perfectly well for my 'unit' tests. But,for tests that I write in 'controller' or 'coordinator' class, there isn't necessarily a method which I want to test. For these tests, I generate multiple conditions which make up one scenario and then I verify the expectation. For example, I may set some properties on different instances, generate an event and then verify that my expectation from controller/coordinator is being met. Now, my controller handles events using a private event handler. Here my scenario is that, I set some properties, say 3 condition1,condition2 and condition3 Also, my scenario includes an event is raised I don't have a method name as my event handler is private. How do I name such a test method?

Checking all subtypes of Object wich qualify for serialization It seems I can't use Serializable for my List... I could use my own interface instead (something like AsyncDataInterface, wich implements the Serializable interface) but the fact is that my method will return a list custom objects AND basic objects (such as Strings, int....). So my questions are: Is it a standart behaviour? (I can't figure out why I can't use this interface in that case) Does anyone have a workaround for that kind of situation?

  This is a very old problem, but I cannot seem to get my head around the other solutions presented here. I have an object function ObjA() { var a = 1; this.methodA = function() { alert(a); } } which is instantiated like var myObjA = new ObjA(); Later on, I assign my methodA as a handler function in an external Javascript Framework, which invokes it using the apply(...) method. When the external framework executes my methodA, this belongs to the framework function invoking my method. Since I cannot change how my method is called, how do I regain access to the private variable a? My research tells me, that closures might be what I'm looking for.

• Repeated host lookups failing in urllib2

  I have code which issues many HTTP GET requests using Python's urllib2, in several threads, writing the responses into files (one per thread). During execution, it looks like many of the host lookups fail (causing a name or service unknown error, see appended error log for an example). Is this due to a flaky DNS service? Is it bad practice to rely on DNS caching, if the host name isn't changing? I.e. should a single lookup's result be passed into the urlopen?   Disclaimer: Although I'm asking in context of a Rails application, I'm not talking about Rails helpers (i.e. view helpers) Let's say I have a helper method/function: def dispatch_job(job = {}) #Do something end Now I want to use this from several places (mostly controllers, but also a few BackgrounDRb workers) What's the preferred way to do this? I can think of two possibilities: 1. Use a class and make the helper a static method: class MyHelper def self.dispatch_job(job = {}) end end class MyWorker def run MyHelper.dispatch_job(...) end end 2. Use a module and include the method into whatever class I need this functionality module MyHelper def self.dispatch_job(job = {}) end end class MyWorker include MyHelper def run dispatch_job(...) end end 3. Other possibilities I don't know yet ... The first one is more Java-like, but I'm not sure if the second one is really an appropriate use of Ruby's modules.

  I would like to define as class X with a static method: class X { static string get_type () {return "X";} //other virtual methods } I would like to force classes which inherit from X to redefine the get_type() method and return strings different from "X" (I am happy if they just redefine get_type for now). How do I do this? I know that I cannot have virtual static methods. Edit: The question is not about the type_id, but in general about a static method that should be overriden. First, calling the Add method returns an object that represents the cached item, while calling Insert does not. Second, their behavior is different if you call these methods and add an item to the Cache that is already stored there. The Insert method replaces the item, while the Add method fails. [emphasis mine] The second part is easy. No question about that. But with the first part, why would it want to return an object that represents the cached item? If I'm trying to Add an item to the cache, I already have/know what that item is? I don't get it. What is the reasoning behind this?

  I want to be able to check if I can edit a cell in a database with a new object Example method declaration: something.isValid(Object newObject, row, column); Example cases: If the editing cell stores an Number and I give it a String, the method will return false... If the editing cell has to be different than every other entry and the new object is the same as something else, the method will also return false.... My main goal... I want to check a whole row, and if everything is valid, I will edit the whole row. Right now, the only way I can find out if I can actually edit something is by actually editing it and seeing if I get an error.

From here I use the Convert-Method to access all my Kilometers. I also have a Converter from Route to IList<Training> and the ConvertBack would lookup the Route for a Training.   I'm currently writing a wrapper in python for a lot of custom company tools. I'm basically going to break each tool into its own py file with a class containing the call to the tool as a method. These will all be contained in a package. Then there'll be a master class that will import all from the package, then inherit from each and every class, so as to appear as one cohesive class. masterClass.py pyPackage - __ init__.py - module1.py --class Module1 ---method tool1 - module2.py --class Module2 ---method tool2 etc Right now, I'm autogenerating the master class file to inherit from the packages modules, but I was wondering if there was a more elegant way to do it? ie from package import * class MasterClass(package.all): pass
