• Loading from Multiple Data Sources with Oracle Loader for Hadoop

  Oracle Loader for Hadoop can be used to load data from multiple data sources (for example Hive, HBase), and data in multiple formats (for example Apache weblogs, JSON files).   There are two ways to do this: (1) Use an input format implementation.  Oracle Loader for Hadoop includes several input format implementations.  In addition, a user can develop their own input format implementation for proprietary data sources and formats. (2) Leverage the capabilities of Hive, and use Oracle Loader for Hadoop to load from Hive. These approaches are discussed in our Oracle Open World 2013 presentation.

• Performance impact of Zones.

  I was really astonished when i saw this question. Because this question was a old acquaintance from years ago, that i didn't heard for a long time. However there was it again. The question: "What's the overhead of Zones?". Sun was and Oracle is not saying "zero". We saying saying minimal. However during all the performance analysis gigs on customer systems i made since the introduction of Zones i failed to measure any overhead caused by zones. What i saw however, was additional load intoduced by processes that wouldn't be there when you would use only one zone Like additional monitoring daemons, like additional daemons having a controlling or supervising job for the application that resulted in slighly longer runtimes of processes, because such additional daemons wanted some cycles on the CPU as well. So i ask when someone wants to tell me that he measured a slight slowdown, if he or she has really measured the impact of the virtualization layer or of a side effect described above. It seems to be a little bit hard to believe, that a virtualisation technology has no overhead, however keep in mind that there is no hypervisor and just one kernel running that looks and behaves like many operating system instances to apps and users. While this imposes some limits to the technology (because there is just one kernel running you can't have zones with different kernels versions running ... obvious even to the cursory observer), but that is key to it's lightweightness and thus to the low overhead. • Tricky situation with EF and Include while projecting (Select / SelectMany)

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/vincentgrondin/archive/2014/06/07/tricky-situation-with-ef-and-include-while-projecting-select.aspxHello, the other day I stumbled on a problem I had a while back with EF and Include method calls and decided this was it and I was going to blog about it…  This would sort of to pin it inside my head and maybe help others too !  So I was using DBContext and wanted to query a DBSet and include some of it’s associations and in the end, do a projection to get a list of Ids…   At first it seems easy…  Query your DBSet, call Include right afterward, then code the rest of your statement with the appropriate where clause and then, do the projection…   Well it wasn’t that easy as my query required I code my where on some entities a few degree further in the association chain and most of these links where “Many”…  I had to do my projection right away with the SelectMany method.  So I did my stuff and tested the query….  no association where loaded…  My Include statement was simply ignored !  Then I remembered this behavior and how to get it to work…  You need to move the Include AFTER your first projection (Select or SelectMany).  So my sequence became:   Query the DBSet, do the projection with SelectMany, Include the associations, code the where clause and do the final projection…. but it wouldn’t compile…   It kept saying that it could not find an “Include” method on an IQueryable… which is perfectly true!  I knew this should work so I went to the definition of the DBset and saw it inherited DBQuery and sure enough the include method was there…  So I had to cast my statement from start until the end of the first projection in a DBQuery then do the Includes and then the rest of my query….   Bottom line is, whenever your Include statement seem to be ignored, then maybe you will need to move them further down in your query and cast your statement in whatever class gives you access to the Include…   Happy coding all !

• Pinterest and the Rising Power of Imagery

  If images keep you glued to a screen, you’re hardly alone. Countless social users are letting their eyes do the walking, waiting for that special photo to grab their attention. And perhaps more than any other social network, Pinterest has been giving those eyes plenty of room to walk. Pinterest came along in 2010. Its play was that users could simply create topic boards and pin pictures to the appropriate boards for sharing. Yes there are some words, captions mostly, but not many. The speed of its growth raised eyebrows. Traffic quadrupled in the last quarter of 2011, with 7.51 million unique visitors in December alone. It now gets 1.9 billion monthly page views. And it was sticky. In the US, the average time a user spends strolling through boards and photos on Pinterest is 15 minutes, 50 seconds. Proving the concept of browsing a catalogue is not dead, it became a top 5 referrer for several apparel retailers like Land’s End, Nordstrom, and Bergdorfs. Now a survey of online shoppers by BizRate Insights says that Pinterest is responsible for more purchases online than Facebook. Over 70% of its users are going there specifically to keep up with trends and get shopping ideas. And when they buy, the average order value is $179. Pinterest is also scoring better in terms of user engagement. 66% of pinners regularly follow and repin retailers, whereas 17% of Facebook fans turn to that platform for purchase ideas. (Facebook still wins when it comes to reach and driving traffic to 3rd-party sites by the way). Social posting best practices have consistently shown that posts with photos are rewarded with higher engagement levels. You may be downright Shakespearean in your writing, but what makes images in the digital world so much more powerful than prose? 1. They transcend language barriers. 2. They’re fun and addictive to look at. 3. They can be consumed in fractions of a second, important considering how fast users move through their social content (admit it, you do too). 4. They’re efficient gateways. A good picture might get them to the headline. A good headline might then get them to the written content. 5. The audience for them surpasses demographic limitations. 6. They can effectively communicate and trigger an emotion. 7. With mobile use soaring, photos are created on those devices and easily consumed and shared on them. Pinterest’s iPad app hit #1 in the Apple store in 1 day. Even as far back as 2009, over 2.5 billion devices with cameras were on the streets generating in just 1 year, 10% of the number of photos taken…ever. But let’s say you’re not a retailer. What if you’re a B2B whose products or services aren’t visual? Should you worry about your presence on Pinterest? As with all things, you need a keen awareness of who your audience is, where they reside online, and what they want to do there. If it doesn’t make sense to put a tent stake in Pinterest, fine. But ignore the power of pictures at your own peril. If not visually, how are you going to attention-grab social users scrolling down their News Feeds at top speed? You’re competing with every other cool image out there from countless content sources. Bore us and we’ll fly right past you.

It's going to take all week for me to catch up on last week's neglected email, sort through the freshly-collected business cards, and generally make sense of the mad dash that is Oracle OpenWorld. So I've been playing this amazing video (produced by Lozano Productions) to remind me of the last business/IT conference marathon I survived: Collaborate 2012. It was an amazing event where we officially launched the new design of Profit and enjoyed a drink with some of our closest friends--Oracle partners, customers, and peers. Many thanks to those who came out to celebrate and who continue to help make Profit a success. It was a great time that resulted in a lot of great new work and new relationships. So I'm taking a time out to remember that the hard work is worth it. See you in Denver next year!

• JCP.next.3: time to get to work

  As I've previously reported in this blog, we planned three JSRs to improve the JCP’s processes and to meet our members’ expectations for change. The first - JCP.next.1, or more formally JSR 348: Towards a new version of the Java Community Process - was completed in October 2011. This focused on a small number of simple but important changes to make our process more transparent and to enable broader participation. We're already seeing the benefits of these changes as new and existing JSRs adopt the new requirements. However, because we wanted to complete this JSR quickly we deliberately postponed a number of more complex items, including everything that would require modifying the JSPA (the legal agreement that members sign when they join the organization) to a follow-on JSR. The second JSR (JSR 355: JCP Executive Committee Merge) is in progress now and will complete later this year. This JSR is even simpler than the first, and is focused solely on merging the two Executive Committees into one for greater efficiency and to encourage synergies between the Java ME and Java SE platforms. Continuing the momentum to move Java and the JCP forward we have just filed the third JSR (JCP.next.3) as JSR 358: A major revision of the Java Community Process. This JSR will modify the JSPA as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons we expect to spend a considerable amount of time working on it - at least a year, and probably more. The current version of the JSPA was created back in 2002, although some minor changes were introduced in 2005. Since then the organization and the environment in which we operate have changed significantly, and it is now time to revise our processes to ensure that they meet our current needs. We have a long list of topics to be considered, including the role of independent implementations (those not derived from the Reference Implementation), licensing and open source, ensuring that our new transparency requirements are implemented correctly, compatibility policy and TCKs, the role of individual members, patent policy, and IP flow. The Expert Group for JSR 358, as with all process-change JSRs, consists of all members of the Executive Committees. Even though the JSR has just been filed we started discussions on the various topics several months ago (see the EC's meeting minutes for details) and our EC members - including the new members who joined within the last year or two - are actively engaged. Now it's your opportunity to get involved. As required by version 2.8 of our Process (introduced with JSR 348) we will conduct all our business in the open. We have a public java.net project where you can follow and participate in our work. All of our deliberations will be copied to a public Observer mailing list, we'll track our issues on a public Issue Tracker, and all our documents (meeting agendas and minutes, task lists, working drafts) will be published in our Document Archive. • Weird bug in Visual Studio 11 Beta when running on Windows 8

  With the Windows 8 Consumer Preview version out in the open and the Visual Studio 11 Beta also available, I’ve been putting some more effort into trying them both out. The first impression of the new Visual Studio 11 build was: Why doesn’t it work at all on Windows 8?! The issues I encountered were odd to say the least. Visual Studio did install correctly, which was a good sign, but when I started it, I was greeted with a multitude of popups each telling me that some package could not be loaded. So I clicked away for quite some time to finally be greeted by the new default visual style of Visual Studio. The next thing I wanted to do was start a new project so I pressed “New Project” and got the “Microsoft.VisualStudio.Dialogs.DialogInitializationException” exception. After some pondering and even submitting a bug report I found another already reported bug “http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/727578/vs-do-not-work-with-finnish-number-format-on-w8-64-bit”. It turns out that the dialog initialization failure has something to do with the packages no being loaded and following the presented workaround helped. The trick is to change the negative number sign to “-“ (U+002D) from the additional settings of your regional settings. This issue appears to have a wider reach than just Visual Studio as I heard at TechDays Finland 2012 that the same fix has to be made when using Hyper-V.

• Are You Meeting Social Customer Service Expectations?

  Whether it’s B2B or B2C, one sure path to repeat business is making sure your buyer has a memorably pleasant and successful customer service experience with you. If they get that kind of treatment consistently, that’s called a relationship. And those aren’t broken easily. Social customer service, driven by integrated SRM (social relationship management) technology, is the venue that can effectively connect customers not only to the brand, but to other customers. Positive experiences, once administered, don’t just rest with the recipient. They’re published in the form of public raves and peer-to-peer recommendation, a force far more actionable than push advertising. What’s more, your customers have come to expect access to you and satisfaction from you using social. An NM Incite study shows 83% of Twitter users and 71% of Facebook users expect to get an answer from brands the same day they post to them on their social assets. To make sure you’re responding, you’ve got to have a tech platform that’s set up to moderate and alert so you’ll know ASAP a customer needs help. The more integrated your social enterprise is, the faster you can not only respond, but respond with the answer they’re looking for, because your system is connected to the internal resources that can surface the answer or put wheels in motion to rectify the situation in the shortest amount of time possible. But if you go to the necessary lengths to make sure your customers feel valued and important, will they really reward you? The study says 71% of consumers who got quick and effective responses from companies they contacted via social were more likely to recommend the brand to their friends and followers. So yes, sweeping people off their feet pays big dividends in terms of word-of-mouth marketing. But you should be keenly aware of the reverse side of that coin. Give people a negative experience, either in real world or virtual customer service, and that message is highly likely to get amplified through social channels faster and louder. Only 36% of the NM Incite study’s respondents reported that their problems were solved quickly and effectively. 36%? That’s hardly an impressive number. • SharePoint Search Problem: The crawler could not communicate with the server.

  This one was not easy to solve ... Error: The crawler could not communicate with the server. Check that the server is available and that the firewall access is configured. Context: Some pages were not crawled (giving the above error) and, what is worse, all the sub content of that site was not crawled either! (the pages were the homepages of the site) Solution:The pages that could not be crawled due to this error contained a custom web part. This web part used default credentials for a given action. During crawling, the SP_Search account tried to perform this action but did not have the appropriate rights. • SQL to XML open data made simple

  The perennial question for people is how to easily generate XML from SQL table content?  The latest CAM Editor release really tackles this head on by providing a powerful and simple toolset.  Firstly you can visually browse your SQL tables and then drag and drop from columns and tables into the XML structure editor.   This gives you a code-free method of describing the transformation you require.  So you do not need to know about the vagaries of XML and XSD schema syntax.   I have just finished a new CodePlex project named SPDeployRetract. This is a sophisticated PowerShell script that allows you to to deploy solutions and InfoPath forms with ease. It is especially beneficial because once you set up the instructions in the xml input, you can repeat the process in farm after farm without error. The script also allows for easy retraction. You may always retract the last deployment by setting the instructions to do so. This is possible because every action taken is recorded and old versions of each WSP are backed up for redeployment.
