  • NullReferenceException makes me want to shoot myself

    - by rockinthesixstring
Ok, so once upon a time, my code worked. Since then I did some refactoring (basic stuff so I thought) but now I'm getting a null reference exception, and I can't bloody well figure out why. Here's where it starts. note, this is the logout method, but all of my ActivityLogs sections are throwing this error Function LogOut(ByVal go As String) As ActionResult ActivityLogService.AddActivity(AuthenticationHelper.RetrieveAuthUser.ID, _ IActivityLogService.LogType.UserLogout, _ HttpContext.Request.UserHostAddress) ActivityLogService.SubmitChanges() ''# more stuff happens after this End Function The service is pretty straight forward (notice the ERROR THROWN HERE) Public Sub AddActivity(ByVal userid As Integer, ByVal activity As Integer, ByVal ip As String) Implements IActivityLogService.AddActivity Dim _activity As ActivityLog = New ActivityLog With {.Activity = activity, .UserID = userid, .UserIP = ip.IPAddressToNumber, .ActivityDate = DateTime.UtcNow} ActivityLogRepository.Create(_activity) ''#ERROR THROWN HERE End Sub And the Interface that the Service uses looks like this Public Interface IActivityLogService Sub AddActivity(ByVal userid As Integer, ByVal activity As Integer, ByVal ip As String) Function GetUsersLastActivity(ByVal UserID As Integer) As ActivityLog Sub SubmitChanges() ''' <summary> ''' The type of activity done by the user ''' </summary> ''' <remarks>Each int refers to an activity. • the size of apt-get update lists is too big

    - by dumb906
I ran a clean install to Ubuntu 12.04 and so far everything has been working well. I especially commend the Ubuntu team for this release. I only noticed that the size of repository update is now about ~13MB. Normally, it is about this size for the first time you run apt-get update after a clean install and then ~ 23kb - 1300kb for subsequent updates. The output from apt-get update is the same I get for previous versions of Ubuntu (its pretty normal). Its a bit too long but look at an example output I got from running apt-get update. • ASP.NET GZip Encoding Caveats

    - by Rick Strahl
GZip encoding in ASP.NET is pretty easy to accomplish using the built-in GZipStream and DeflateStream classes and applying them to the Response.Filter property.  While applying GZip and Deflate behavior is pretty easy there are a few caveats that you have watch out for as I found out today for myself with an application that was throwing up some garbage data. But before looking at caveats let’s review GZip implementation for ASP.NET. ASP.NET GZip/Deflate Basics Response filters basically are applied to the Response.OutputStream and transform it as data is written to it through the ASP.NET Response object. So a Response.Write eventually gets written into the output stream which if a filter is also written through the filter stream’s interface. To perform the actual GZip (and Deflate) encoding typically used by Web pages .NET includes the GZipStream and DeflateStream stream classes which can be readily assigned to the Repsonse.OutputStream. With these two stream classes in place it’s almost trivially easy to create a couple of reusable methods that allow you to compress your HTTP output. In my standard WebUtils utility class (from the West Wind West Wind Web Toolkit) created two static utility methods – IsGZipSupported and GZipEncodePage – that check whether the client supports GZip encoding and then actually encodes the current output (note that although the method includes ‘Page’ in its name this code will work with any ASP.NET output). /// <summary> /// Determines if GZip is supported /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static bool IsGZipSupported() { string AcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(AcceptEncoding) && (AcceptEncoding.Contains("gzip") || AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))) return true; return false; } /// <summary> /// Sets up the current page or handler to use GZip through a Response.Filter /// IMPORTANT: /// You have to call this method before any output is generated! /// </summary> public static void GZipEncodePage() { HttpResponse Response = HttpContext.Current.Response; if (IsGZipSupported()) { string AcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; if (AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate")) { Response.Filter = new System.IO.Compression.DeflateStream(Response.Filter, System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress); Response.Headers.Remove("Content-Encoding"); Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "deflate"); } else { Response.Filter = new System.IO.Compression.GZipStream(Response.Filter, System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress); Response.Headers.Remove("Content-Encoding"); Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "gzip"); } } } As you can see the actual assignment of the Filter is as simple as: Response.Filter = new DeflateStream(Response.Filter, System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress); which applies the filter to the OutputStream. You also need to ensure that your response reflects the new GZip or Deflate encoding and ensure that any pages that are cached in Proxy servers can differentiate between pages that were encoded with the various different encodings (or no encoding). To use this utility function now is trivially easy: In any ASP.NET code that wants to compress its Response output you simply use: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); Entry = WebLogFactory.GetEntry(); var entries = Entry.GetLastEntries(App.Configuration.ShowEntryCount, "pk,Title,SafeTitle,Body,Entered,Feedback,Location,ShowTopAd", "TEntries"); if (entries == null) throw new ApplicationException("Couldn't load WebLog Entries: " + Entry.ErrorMessage); this.repEntries.DataSource = entries; this.repEntries.DataBind(); } Here I use an ASP.NET page, but the above WebUtils.GZipEncode() method call will work in any ASP.NET application type including HTTP Handlers. The only requirement is that the filter needs to be applied before any other output is sent to the OutputStream. For example, in my CallbackHandler service implementation by default output over a certain size is GZip encoded. The output that is generated is JSON or XML and if the output is over 5k in size I apply WebUtils.GZipEncode(): if (sbOutput.Length > GZIP_ENCODE_TRESHOLD) WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); Response.ContentType = ControlResources.STR_JsonContentType; HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(sbOutput.ToString()); Ok, so you probably get the idea: Encoding GZip/Deflate content is pretty easy. Hold on there Hoss –Watch your Caching Or is it? There are a few caveats that you need to watch out for when dealing with GZip content. The fist issue is that you need to deal with the fact that some clients don’t support GZip or Deflate content. Most modern browsers support it, but if you have a programmatic Http client accessing your content GZip/Deflate support is by no means guaranteed. For example, WinInet Http clients don’t support GZip out of the box – it has to be explicitly implemented. Other low level HTTP clients on other platforms too don’t support GZip out of the box. The problem is that your application, your Web Server and Proxy Servers on the Internet might be caching your generated content. If you return content with GZip once and then again without, either caching is not applied or worse the wrong type of content is returned back to the client from a cache or proxy. The result is an unreadable response for *some clients* which is also very hard to debug and fix once in production. You already saw the issue of Proxy servers addressed in the GZipEncodePage() function: // Allow proxy servers to cache encoded and unencoded versions separately Response.AppendHeader("Vary", "Content-Encoding"); This ensures that any Proxy servers also check for the Content-Encoding HTTP Header to cache their content – not just the URL. The same thing applies if you do OutputCaching in your own ASP.NET code. If you generate output for GZip on an OutputCached page the GZipped content will be cached (either by ASP.NET’s cache or in some cases by the IIS Kernel Cache). But what if the next client doesn’t support GZip? She’ll get served a cached GZip page that won’t decode and she’ll get a page full of garbage. Wholly undesirable. To fix this you need to add some custom OutputCache rules by way of the GetVaryByCustom() HttpApplication method in your global_ASAX file: public override string GetVaryByCustomString(HttpContext context, string custom) { // Override Caching for compression if (custom == "GZIP") { string acceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Response.Headers["Content-Encoding"]; if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(acceptEncoding)) return ""; else if (acceptEncoding.Contains("gzip")) return "GZIP"; else if (acceptEncoding.Contains("deflate")) return "DEFLATE"; return ""; } return base.GetVaryByCustomString(context, custom); } In a page that use Output caching you then specify: <%@ OutputCache Duration="180" VaryByParam="none" VaryByCustom="GZIP" %> To use that custom rule. It’s all Fun and Games until ASP.NET throws an Error Ok, so you’re up and running with GZip, you have your caching squared away and your pages that you are applying it to are jamming along. Then BOOM, something strange happens and you get a lovely garbled page that look like this: Lovely isn’t it? What’s happened here is that I have WebUtils.GZipEncode() applied to my page, but there’s an error in the page. The error falls back to the ASP.NET error handler and the error handler removes all existing output (good) and removes all the custom HTTP headers I’ve set manually (usually good, but very bad here). Since I applied the Response.Filter (via GZipEncode) the output is now GZip encoded, but ASP.NET has removed my Content-Encoding header, so the browser receives the GZip encoded content without a notification that it is encoded as GZip. The result is binary output. Here’s what Fiddler says about the raw HTTP header output when an error occurs when GZip encoding was applied: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error Cache-Control: private Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Date: Sat, 30 Apr 2011 22:21:08 GMT Content-Length: 2138 Connection: close ?`I?%&/m?{J?J??t??` … binary output striped here Notice: no Content-Encoding header and that’s why we’re seeing this garbage. ASP.NET has stripped the Content-Encoding header but left our filter intact. So how do we fix this? In my applications I typically have a global Application_Error handler set up and in this case I’ve been using that. One thing that you can do in the Application_Error handler is explicitly clear out the Response.Filter and set it to null at the top: protected void Application_Error(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Remove any special filtering especially GZip filtering Response.Filter = null; … } And voila I get my Yellow Screen of Death or my custom generated error output back via uncompressed content. BTW, the same is true for Page level errors handled in Page_Error or ASP.NET MVC Error handling methods in a controller. Another and possibly even better solution is to check whether a filter is attached just before the headers are sent to the client as pointed out by Adam Schroeder in the comments: protected void Application_PreSendRequestHeaders() { // ensure that if GZip/Deflate Encoding is applied that headers are set // also works when error occurs if filters are still active HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response; if (response.Filter is GZipStream && response.Headers["Content-encoding"] != "gzip") response.AppendHeader("Content-encoding", "gzip"); else if (response.Filter is DeflateStream && response.Headers["Content-encoding"] != "deflate") response.AppendHeader("Content-encoding", "deflate"); } This uses the Application_PreSendRequestHeaders() pipeline event to check for compression encoding in a filter and adjusts the content accordingly. This is actually a better solution since this is generic – it’ll work regardless of how the content is cleaned up. For example, an error Response.Redirect() or short error display might get changed and the filter not cleared and this code actually handles that. Sweet, thanks Adam. It’s unfortunate that ASP.NET doesn’t natively clear out Response.Filters when an error occurs just as it clears the Response and Headers. I can’t see where leaving a Filter in place in an error situation would make any sense, but hey - this is what it is and it’s easy enough to fix as long as you know where to look. Riiiight! IIS and GZip I should also mention that IIS 7 includes good support for compression natively. If you can defer encoding to let IIS perform it for you rather than doing it in your code by all means you should do it! Especially any static or semi-dynamic content that can be made static should be using IIS built-in compression. Dynamic caching is also supported but is a bit more tricky to judge in terms of performance and footprint. John Forsyth has a great article on the benefits and drawbacks of IIS 7 compression which gives some detailed performance comparisons and impact reviews. I’ll post another entry next with some more info on IIS compression since information on it seems to be a bit hard to come by. • Building a better .NET Application Configuration Class - revisited

    - by Rick Strahl
Managing configuration settings is an important part of successful applications. It should be easy to ensure that you can easily access and modify configuration values within your applications. If it's not - well things don't get parameterized as much as they should. In this post I discuss a custom Application Configuration class that makes it super easy to create reusable configuration objects in your applications using a code-first approach and the ability to persist configuration information into various types of configuration stores.

  • Should a c# dev switch to VB.net when the team language base is mixed?

    - by jjr2527
I recently joined a new development team where the language preferences are mixed on the .net platform. Dev 1: Knows VB.net, does not know c# Dev 2: Knows VB.net, does not know c# Dev 3: Knows c# and VB.net, prefers c# Dev 4: Knows c# and VB6(VB.net should be pretty easy to pick up), prefers c# It seems to me that the thought leaders in the .net space are c# devs almost universally. I also thought that some 3rd party tools didn't support VB.net but when I started looking into it I didn't find any good examples. I would prefer to get the whole team on c# but if there isn't any good reason to force the issue aside from preference then I don't think that is the right choice. Are there any reasons I should lead folks away from VB.net?

  • Why are some seasoned ASP.NET developers defecting to Ruby on Rails?

    - by Tony_Henrich
Once a while I hear some known ASP.NET developer declaring that they quit developing in .NET and moving to Ruby using Ruby in Rails. The problem is they don't mention exactly the reasons. They use words like RoR is 'easier', 'better' & 'faster'. That really doesn't say much to me. Anyone care to do faithful comparison using code samples, case studies ..etc or from personal experience in using both? Try to convince me to throw away all my years of learning C#, the .NET Framework using a powerful IDE (Visual Studio). Does RoR save you hours a week in development time? What are the major pain points in .NET that compels one to move away from it? This question is NOT about a pure RoR vs ASP.NET (MVC) comparison. It's about the compelling technical reasons (getting bored does not count!) to switch over after using a platform for several years and start with a new language and platform. (prefer this to be a wiki)

  • Recommended solutions for integrating iOS with .NET, at the service tier

    - by George
I'm developing an application, in iOS, that is required to connect to my Windows Server to poll for new data, update, etc. As a seasoned C# developer, my first instinct is to start a new project in Visual Studio and select Web Service, letting my bias (and comfort level) dictate the service layer of my application. However, I don't want to be biased, and I don't base my decision on a service which I am very familiar with, at the cost of performance. I would like to know what other developers have had success using, and if there is a default standard for iOS service layer development? Are there protocols that are easier to consume than others within iOS? Better ones for the size and/or compression of data? Is there anything wrong with using SOAP? I know it's "big" in comparison to protocols like JSON.

  • Problem with FedEx Address validation web service

    - by DJ Matthews
    Hi, I'm trying to get started with Fedex'es Address validation service and I'm running into a road block with FedEx's own demo application. This is the code in there app: Sub Main() ''# Build a AddressValidationRequest object Dim request As AddressValidationRequest = New AddressValidationRequest() Console.WriteLine("--- Setting Credentials ---") request.WebAuthenticationDetail = New WebAuthenticationDetail() request.WebAuthenticationDetail.UserCredential = New WebAuthenticationCredential() request.WebAuthenticationDetail.UserCredential.Key = "###" ''# Replace "XXX" with the Key request.WebAuthenticationDetail.UserCredential.Password = "###" ''# Replace "XXX" with the Password Console.WriteLine("--- Setting Account Information ---") request.ClientDetail = New ClientDetail() request.ClientDetail.AccountNumber = "###" ''# Replace "XXX" with clients account number request.ClientDetail.MeterNumber = "###" ''# Replace "XXX" with clients meter number request.TransactionDetail = New TransactionDetail() request.TransactionDetail.CustomerTransactionId = "Address Validation v2 Request using VB.NET Sample Code" ''# This is just an echo back request.Version = New VersionId() request.RequestTimestamp = DateTime.Now Console.WriteLine("--- Setting Validation Options ---") request.Options = New AddressValidationOptions() request.Options.CheckResidentialStatus = True request.Options.MaximumNumberOfMatches = 5 request.Options.StreetAccuracy = AddressValidationAccuracyType.LOOSE request.Options.DirectionalAccuracy = AddressValidationAccuracyType.LOOSE request.Options.CompanyNameAccuracy = AddressValidationAccuracyType.LOOSE request.Options.ConvertToUpperCase = True request.Options.RecognizeAlternateCityNames = True request.Options.ReturnParsedElements = True Console.WriteLine("--- Address 1 ---") request.AddressesToValidate = New AddressToValidate(1) {New AddressToValidate(), New AddressToValidate()} request.AddressesToValidate(0).AddressId = "WTC" request.AddressesToValidate(0).Address = New Address() request.AddressesToValidate(0).Address.StreetLines = New String(0) {"10 FedEx Parkway"} request.AddressesToValidate(0).Address.PostalCode = "38017" request.AddressesToValidate(0).CompanyName = "FedEx Services" Console.WriteLine("--- Address 2 ---") request.AddressesToValidate(1).AddressId = "Kinkos" request.AddressesToValidate(1).Address = New Address() request.AddressesToValidate(1).Address.StreetLines = New String(0) {"50 N Front St"} request.AddressesToValidate(1).Address.PostalCode = "38103" request.AddressesToValidate(1).CompanyName = "FedEx Kinkos" Dim addressValidationService As AddressValidationService.AddressValidationService = New AddressValidationService.AddressValidationService ''# Try ''# This is the call to the web service passing in a AddressValidationRequest and returning a AddressValidationReply Console.WriteLine("--- Sending Request..... ---") Dim reply As New AddressValidationReply() reply = addressValidationService.addressValidation(request) Console.WriteLine("--- Processing request.... ---") ''#This is where I get the error If (Not reply.HighestSeverity = NotificationSeverityType.ERROR) And (Not reply.HighestSeverity = NotificationSeverityType.FAILURE) Then If (Not reply.AddressResults Is Nothing) Then For Each result As AddressValidationResult In reply.AddressResults Console.WriteLine("Address Id - " + result.AddressId) Console.WriteLine("--- Proposed Details ---") If (Not result.ProposedAddressDetails Is Nothing) Then For Each detail As ProposedAddressDetail In result.ProposedAddressDetails Console.WriteLine("Score - " + detail.Score) Console.WriteLine("Address - " + detail.Address.StreetLines(0)) Console.WriteLine(" " + detail.Address.StateOrProvinceCode + " " + detail.Address.PostalCode + " " + detail.Address.CountryCode) Console.WriteLine("Changes -") For Each change As AddressValidationChangeType In detail.Changes Console.WriteLine(change.ToString()) Next Console.WriteLine("") Next End If Console.WriteLine("") Next End If Else For Each notification As Notification In reply.Notifications Console.WriteLine(notification.Message) Next End If Catch e As SoapException Console.WriteLine(e.Detail.InnerText) Catch e As Exception Console.WriteLine(e.Message) End Try Console.WriteLine("Press any key to quit !") I could understand if I wrote the code, but good god... they can't even get their own code to work? Has anyone else seen/fixed this problem?

  • HtmlForm.Action and .Net Framework 2.0/3.5 Query

    - by Brian
Disappointingly, the members page for HtmlForm 2.0 is missing... My research seems to indicate that HtmlForm.Action is a property that was added in .Net Framework 3.5. However, I'm using VS2005 and my reference to System.Web (the namespace HtmlForm is under) is to a .Net Framework 2.0 runtime version. Further, my IIS status information also indicates I am using .Net Framework 2.0, when I force an error on my local IIS and read it. Despite this, I am able to use form1.Action successfully...but only on my local IIS. When I try it on vms and external servers, I get [MissingMethodException: Method not found: 'System.String System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlForm.get_Action()'.] errors. So, my question: 1) Why does it work on my local IIS? Does the fact that I have the 3.5 framework installed make a difference, here? 2) Why does it not work on other IIS? (I think this is because it's not part of .Net 2.0). I guess I just figure that if something is running on .Net Framework 2.0, the presence of 3.5 should not make a difference. Or maybe there's some other cause for these results.

  • Is ASP.NET MVC destined to replace Webforms?

    - by johnny
I found these questions, but a couple of them were a little old: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/191556/should-i-pursue-asp-net-webforms-or-asp-net-mvc http://stackoverflow.com/questions/88787/do-you-think-asp-net-mvc-will-compete-with-asp-net-webforms http://stackoverflow.com/questions/722637/asp-net-mvc-asp-net-webforms-why I do not believe these are duplicates and might be old enough that new light can be shed. If not please close this. I know that no one framework or language is necessarily the only tool for every job. But, do you see MVC eclipsing webforms or webforms going lower on the priority list for Microsoft? They will have to keep webforms for a long time because so many have invested in it, but they don't have to keep adding new functionality for it. I don't know if this is a good example, but it reminds me of web parts. I never saw much improvement in it from Microsoft. It works and I thought it was great until I started to really try and get a lot out of it. Then from what I could see it just wasn't being pursued by Microsoft that much, though it stayed in Visual Studio. Maybe that's a bad example; just what I remembered. EDIT: Also, if anyone has any statements from Microsoft on this subject it is appreciated. No offense to anyone. I was only hoping for something official.

Shouldn't the app run as 64-bit since it was compiled with "AnyCPU"? How can I get this to work? I am using .NET 3.5.

The only think I like using Linq to sql is that I dont have to design the domain objects Linq does that for me and saves me from spend my time on boring things :P But is Linq to sql suitable for large scale projects , is there an overhead that we can avoid when using ADO.net ?

  • Excel VBA: can delete validation but not add new one

    - by user1882965
My code is as follows If Cells(Target.Row, 2) = "" And (Cells(Target.Row, 3) = "" Or Cells(Target.Row, 3) = "") Then Sheets("MySheet").Activate Cells(Target.Row, 3).Activate ActiveCell.Validation.Delete If (Cells(Target.Row, 2) = "Type A") Then ActiveCell.Validation.Add Type:=xlValidateList, AlertStyle:=xlValidAlertStop, Operator:=xlBetween, Formula1:="=AvailableVersions" ElseIf (Cells(Target.Row, 2) = "Type B") Then ActiveCell.Validation.Delete Else ActiveCell.Validation.Add Type:=xlValidateWholeNumber, AlertStyle:=xlValidAlertInformation, Formula1:="0", Formula2:="9999999" End If End If So the issue I am having comes whenever I reach ActiveCell.Validation.Add Run Time Error '1004': Application-defined or object-defined error Not a very helpful error, and also this occurs with both number and list validation type, so I am sure it is not an issue with the list itself which has workbook level scope anyway. It never occurs on ActiveCell.Validation.Delete which I find weird? I have been all over google trying to find a solution, and most suggest that it is caused by running dynamic validation code from a button which hogs focus despite the Activate call, but I am running on sheet change event rather than on button press so I don't think this is my issue - any ideas? I've wasted basically a whole day on this! :(

  • Interview questions about ASP.NET Web services.

    - by Jalpesh P. Vadgama
I have seen there are lots of myth’s about asp.net web services in fresher level asp.net developers. So I decided to write a blog post about asp.net web services interview questions. Because I think this is the best way to reach fresher asp.net developers. Followings are few questions about asp.net web services. 1) What is asp.net web services? Ans: Web services are used to support http requests that formatted using xml, http and SOAP syntax. They interact with through standards xml messages through Soap. They are used to support interoperability. It has .asmx extension and .NET framework contains http handlers for web services to support http requested directly. 2) What kind of data can be returned web services web methods? Ans: It supports all the primitive data types and custom data types that can be encoded and serialized by xml. You can find more information about that from the following link. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb552900.aspx 3) Is web services are only written in asp.net? Ans: No, It can be written by Java and PHP languages also. 4) Explain web method attributes in web services Ans: Web method attributes are added to a public class method to indicate that this method is exposed as a part of XML web services. You can have multiple web methods in a class. But it should be having public attributes as it will be exposed as xml web service part. You can find more information about web method attributes from following link. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/byxd99hx(v=vs.71).aspx 5) What is SOA? Ans: SOA stands for “Services Oriented Architecture”. It is kind of service oriented architecture used to support different kind of computing platforms and applications. Web services in asp.net are one of the technologies that supports that kind of architecture.  You can call asp.net web services from any computing platforms and applications. 6) What is SOAP,WDSL and UDDI? Ans: SOAP stands “Simple Object Access protocol”. Web services will be interact with SOAP messages written in XML. SOAP is sometimes referred as “data wrapper” or “data envelope”.Its contains different xml tag that creates a whole SOAP message.  WSDL stand for “Web services Description Language”.  It is an xml document which is written according to standard specified by W3c. It is a kind of manual or document that describes how we can use and consume web service. Web services development software processes the WSDL document and generates SOAP messages that are needed for specific web service. UDDI stand for “Universal Discovery, Description and Integration”. Its is used for web services registries. You can find addresses of web services from UDDI.

  • System testing - making sure the system conforms to specification. Validation?

    - by user970696
After weeks of research I have nearly completed my thesis, yet I am unable to clear up my confusion contained in all previous threads here (and in many books): During system testing, we check the system function against system analysis (functional system design) - but that would fit to a definition of verification according to many books. But I follow ISO12207, which considers all testing as validation (making sure work product meets requirement for intended use). How can I justify that unit testing or system testing is validation, even though when I check it against specification? Which fullfils the definiton of verification? When testing that e.g. "Save button" works, is it validation? This picture shows my understanding of V&V, so different from many other sources, including ISTQB etc. Essential problem I have is that a book using the same picture also states on another place that: test activities in the area of validation are usability, alpha and beta testing. For verification, testable system requirements are defined whose correct implementation can be tested through system tests. Isn't that the opposite of what the picture says? Most books present the following picture, where validation is just making sure that customer needs are satisfied. Mind you that according to ISO, validation activity is testing.

  • How far should one take e-mail address validation?

    - by Mike Tomasello
I'm wondering how far people should take the validation of e-mail address. My field is primarily web-development, but this applies anywhere. I've seen a few approaches: simply checking if there is an "@" present, which is dead simply but of course not that reliable. a more complex regex test for standard e-mail formats a full regex against RFC 2822 - the problem with this is that often an e-mail address might be valid but it is probably not what the user meant DNS validation SMTP validation As many people might know (but many don't), e-mail addresses can have a lot of strange variation that most people don't usually consider (see RFC 2822 3.4.1), but you have to think about the goals of your validation: are you simply trying to ensure that an e-mail address can be sent to an address, or that it is what the user probably meant to put in (which is unlikely in a lot of the more obscure cases of otherwise 'valid' addresses). An option I've considered is simply giving a warning with a more esoteric address but still allowing the request to go through, but this does add more complexity to a form and most users are likely to be confused. While DNS validation / SMTP validation seem like no-brainers, I foresee problems where the DNS server/SMTP server is temporarily down and a user is unable to register somewhere, or the user's SMTP server doesn't support the required features. How might some experienced developers out here handle this? Are there any other approaches than the ones I've listed? Edit: I completely forgot the most obvious of all, sending a confirmation e-mail! Thanks to answerers for pointing that one out. Yes, this one is pretty foolproof, but it does require extra hassle on the part of everyone involved. The user has to fetch some e-mail, and the developer needs to remember user data before they're even confirmed as valid.

  • ASP.NET MVC: What is the lifetime of a Controller instance?

    - by Kivin
I was unable to find any documentation on the MSDN site. Is the lifetime (construction and disposition) of the Controller object defined in the ASP.NET MVC Spec? The reason for this question is to determine whether or not it is safe to store contextual information in Controller members/properties or whether using the HttpContext would be more appropriate.

  • ASP.NET MVC, Webform hybrid

    - by Greg Ogle
We (me and my team) have a ASP.NET MVC application and we are integrating a page or two that are Web Forms. We are trying to reuse the Master Page from our MVC part of the app in the WebForms part. We have found a way of rendering an MVC partial view in web forms, which works great, until we try and do a postback, which is the reason for using a WebForm. The Error: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. The Code to render the partial view from a WebForm (credited to "How to include a partial view inside a webform"): public static class WebFormMVCUtil { public static void RenderPartial(string partialName, object model) { //get a wrapper for the legacy WebForm context var httpCtx = new HttpContextWrapper(System.Web.HttpContext.Current); //create a mock route that points to the empty controller var rt = new RouteData(); rt.Values.Add("controller", "WebFormController"); //create a controller context for the route and http context var ctx = new ControllerContext( new RequestContext(httpCtx, rt), new WebFormController()); //find the partial view using the viewengine var view = ViewEngines.Engines.FindPartialView(ctx, partialName).View; //create a view context and assign the model var vctx = new ViewContext(ctx, view, new ViewDataDictionary { Model = model }, new TempDataDictionary()); //ERROR OCCURS ON THIS LINE view.Render(vctx, System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Response.Output); } } My only experience with this error is in context of a web farm, which is not the case. Also, I understand that the machine key is used for decrypting the ViewState. Any information on how to diagnose this issue would be appreciated. A Work-around: So far the work-around is to move the header content to a PartialView, then use an AJAX call to call a page with just the Partial View from the WebForms, and then using the PartialView directly on the MVC Views. Also, we are still able to share non-tech-specific parts of the Master Page, i.e. anything that is not MVC specific. Still yet, this is not an ideal solution, a server-side solution is still desired. Also, this solutino has issues when working with controls that have more sophisticated controls, using JavaScript, particularly dynamically generated script as used by 3rd party controls.

  • ASP.NET MVC hosting problem, routing, handlers and modules

    - by johnabs
    Hi, This is one of them again, hosting with fasthosts. I recently purchased a windows developer package from them. When I tried to deploy my ASP.NET 3.5 MVC project, which was working fine with the same host on a reseller account, it is not working. The reason to move from reseller to a normal Windows Developer package is, the MS-SQL server database is too expensive in a reseller account, strange! I contact them, and they are saying they upgraded the control panel. The technical support said, I need to disable the Modules and Handlers from the web.config file. Also I need to deploy them as .dll files. I am not sure how to do that. The website is partially working now. I think the problem is now with the routing. I have not deployed any .dlls apart from the System.Web.Mvc.dll, System.Web.Routing.dll and System.Web.Abstractions.dll. I have not got a clue on how to deploy the Modules and Handlers. The code that I commented on the web.config file is as follows. <!--<modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"> <remove name="ScriptModule" /> <remove name="UrlRoutingModule" /> <add name="ScriptModule" preCondition="managedHandler" type="System.Web.Handlers.ScriptModule, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/> <add name="UrlRoutingModule" type="System.Web.Routing.UrlRoutingModule, System.Web.Routing, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> </modules> <handlers> <remove name="WebServiceHandlerFactory-Integrated"/> <remove name="ScriptHandlerFactory" /> <remove name="ScriptHandlerFactoryAppServices" /> <remove name="ScriptResource" /> <remove name="MvcHttpHandler" /> <remove name="UrlRoutingHandler" /> <add name="ScriptHandlerFactory" verb="*" path="*.asmx" preCondition="integratedMode" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/> <add name="ScriptHandlerFactoryAppServices" verb="*" path="*_AppService.axd" preCondition="integratedMode" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/> <add name="ScriptResource" preCondition="integratedMode" verb="GET,HEAD" path="ScriptResource.axd" type="System.Web.Handlers.ScriptResourceHandler, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> <add name="MvcHttpHandler" preCondition="integratedMode" verb="*" path="*.mvc" type="System.Web.Mvc.MvcHttpHandler, System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/> <add name="UrlRoutingHandler" preCondition="integratedMode" verb="*" path="UrlRouting.axd" type="System.Web.HttpForbiddenHandler, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" /> </handlers>--> Anybody got any ideas please.   • ASP.Net WebForms requiredfieldvalidator not working in FireFox?

    - by larryq
I have a WebForms app that uses a field validator on a dropdownlist. It works in IE but not FireFox. This is pretty straightforward stuff I'm doing. Here are the setups for the dropdown and validator: <asp:DropDownList ID ="dmbFileActNo" runat="server" CssClass="DROPDOWN_MEDIUM" AutoPostBack="True"></asp:DropDownList> <asp:requiredfieldvalidator EnableClientScript="true" id="rfvFileActNo" Display="None" ControlToValidate="dmbFileActNo" Runat="server" InitialValue="-1"></asp:requiredfieldvalidator> I'm running ASP.Net 2.0 on the web server. Javascript is enabled on the FireFox browser-- this problem happens on all FF browsers I've tested, on multiple everyday machines, so I don't believe it's due to a locked down install.
