    I have a bunch of strings which may of may not have random symbols and numbers in them. Some examples are: contains(reserved[j])){ close(); i++){ letters[20]=word I want to find any character that is NOT a letter, and replace it with a white space, so the above examples look like: contains reserved j close i letters word What is the best way to do this?

    I have a comma delimited list I want to import into a database, and in some cases the last item is blank: item1, item2, item3 item1, item2, item1, item2, I'd like to replace all of these empty columns with a placeholder value using a regexp item1, item2, item3 item1, item2, PLACEHOLDER item1, item2, PLACEHOLDER I tried preg_replace("/,\n/", ",PLACEHOLDER\n",$csv);, but this isn't working. Anyone know what regexp would work for this?

    This is probably a really basic question, but I can't find any answers. I need to match a string by either one or more spaces OR an equals sign. When I split this string: 9 x 13 = (8.9 x 13.4) (89 x 134) with ( +) I get: part 0: 9 x 13 = (8.9 x 13.4) part 1: (89 x 134) When I split it with (=) I get: part 0: 9 x 13 part 1: (8.9 x 13.4) (89 x 134) How can split by BOTH?   • python regular expressions, how to extract longest of overlapping groups

    Hi How can I extract the longest of groups which start the same way For example, from a given string, I want to extract the longest match to either CS or CSI. I tried this "(CS|CSI).*" and it it will return CS rather than CSI even if CSI is available. If I do "(CSI|CS).*" then I do get CSI if it's a match, so I gues the solution is to always place the shorter of the overlaping groups after the longer one. Is there a clearer way to express this with re's? somehow it feels confusing that the result depends on the order you link the groups.

    I am still learning REGEX, and I've run into an issue ... I am trying to separate a string that is composed of a mixture of letters and numbers that are in decimal format: AB0.500CD1.05EF2.29 Into something like this: list1 = AB,CD,EF list2 = 0.500,1.05,2.29 A complication to all this is that I also have strings that look like this: AB1CD2EF3 Which I'd also like to separate into this: list1 = AB,CD,EF list2 = 1,2,3 A previous inquiry yielded the following snippet, import re pattern = re.compile(r'([a-zA-Z]+)([0-9]+)') for (letters, numbers) in re.findall(pattern,cmpnd): print numbers print letters This example works fine for strings of the 2nd kind, but only "finds" the leading digit in the numbers that contain decimal places in the strings of the first kind. I've attempted an approach using the following line: pattern = re.compile(r'([a-zA-Z]+)([0-9]+(\.[0-9]))') But this results in an error: "ValueError: too many values to unpack" Thanks for any and all assistance!

I have been given some file name which can be like <filename>YYYYMMDD<fileextension> some valid file names that will satisfy the above pattern are as under xxx20100326.xls, xxx2v20100326.csv, x_20100326.xls, xy2z_abc_20100326_xyz.csv, abc.xyz.20100326.doc, ab2.v.20100326.doc, abc.v.20100326_xyz.xls In what ever be the above defined case, I need to pick up the dates only. So for all the cases, the output will be 20100326. I am trying to achieve the same but no luck.     What will be the exact definition of leap year? AFAIK "A year which is divisible by 4 is a leap year. But for century years' the years which are divisible by 400 is a leap year." But that definition makes 100, 200, 300, 400.... upto 1700 NOT LEAP years! But in Gregorian calendar all of them are all leap year, check this out. You can also try "call 1700" in Linux to verify. So the correct algorithm for leap years would be: if ( (year % 4 == 0) && ( year <= 1700 || year % 100 != 0 || year % 400 == 0 )) printf("%d is a leap year.\n", year); else printf("%d is not a leap year.\n", year); But is this specific to Gregorian calendar? Even if that is the case why is it not mentioned here? Regards, PS:The history of Gregorian callender seems interesting check out the September month of 1752.

Testing [this] So when my cursor is at Hi and I do a tab out , the characters enclosed in the [this] are highlighted and when I again do a tabl out th next characters enclosed in following [an] are highlighted.     LogEvents(System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetString(queryPlaces.ToBson)) I want to be able to output not just the content of System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetString(queryPlaces.ToBson) but also the actual string of System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetString(queryPlaces.ToBson) itself, perhaps with line numbers and file names. I know that I can do this easily with objective-c. How can I do that with .net? I've heard that that's what reflextion is for. But how? There is no macro in vb.net right?
