• Eclipse does not start on Windows 7

  Suddenly Eclipse today has decides to stop working. The last thing I did was close all perspectives and close Eclipse. When loading eclipse from the command prompt, using: "eclipse.exe -clean" the splash screen loads for a split second then exits. • Applets failing to load

  While testing our setup for user acceptance testing, we got some reports that java applets in our web application would occasionally fail to load. The envt where it was reported was WinXP/IE6, and there were no errors found in the java console. Obviously we'd like to avoid it. What sort of things should we be checking for here? On our local servers, everything seems fine. There's some turnaround time when sending questions to the on-site guy, so I'd look to cover as many possible causes as possible. Some more info: We have multiple applets, in the instance that they fail loading, all of them fail loading. The applet jar files vary in size from 2MB to 8MB. I'm told it seems more likely to happen if the applet isn't cached yet, i.e. if they've been able to load the applets once on a given machine, further runs on that machine go smoothly. I'm wondering if there's some sort of network transfer error when downloading the applets, but I don't know how to verify that. Any advise is welcome!

• Understanding Hibernate saveOrUpdate

  The books that I've read regarding hibernate are, at best, reference tomes. They very seldom have good code examples, so I tend to use online resources for those needs. However, I've always had a problem understanding the basic idea of hibernate persistence. I've read the books and understand the concepts, but in practice, I often see results that I don't understand. Perhaps you all can help, as you have in the past. Let's look at a simple example of a dog and a cat that are friends. This isn't a rare occurrence. It also has the benefit of being much more interesting than my business case. We want a function called "saveFriends" that takes a dog name and a cat name. We'll save the Dog and then the Cat. For this example to work, the cat is going to have a reference back to the dog. I understand this isn't an ideal example, but it's cute and works for our purposes. • What is default javac source mode (assert as identifier compilation)?

  According to Orcale's Java7 assert guide: source mode 1.3 (default) — the compiler accepts programs that use assert as an identifier, but issues warnings. In this mode, programs are not permitted to use the assert statement. source mode 1.4 — the compiler generates an error message if the program uses assert as an identifier. In this mode, programs are permitted to use the assert statement. I wrote such class: package mm; public class ClassTest { public static void main(String[] arg) { int assert = 1; System.out.println(assert); } } It should compile fine if Oracle's info right (1.3 is default source mode). But I got errors like this: $ javac -version javac 1.7.0_04 $ javac -d bin src/mm/* src\mm\ClassTest.java:5: error: as of release 1.4, 'assert' is a keyword, and may not be used as an identifier int assert = 1; ^ (use -source 1.3 or lower to use 'assert' as an identifier) src\mm\ClassTest.java:6: error: as of release 1.4, 'assert' is a keyword, and may not be used as an identifier System.out.println(assert); ^ (use -source 1.3 or lower to use 'assert' as an identifier) 2 errors I added manually -source 1.3 and it issued warnings but compiled fine. It seems that Oracle's information is wrong and 1.3 is not default source mode. Which one is it then?

• Rendering Swing Components to an Offscreen buffer

  I have a Java (Swing) application, running on a 32-bit Windows 2008 Server, which needs to render it's output to an off-screen image (which is then picked up by another C++ application for rendering elsewhere). Most of the components render correctly, except in the odd case where a component which has just lost focus is occluded by another component, for example where there are two JComboBoxes close to each other, if the user interacts with the lower one, then clicks on the upper one so it's pull-down overlaps the other box. In this situation, the component which has lost focus is rendered after the one occluding it, and so appears on top in the output. It renders correctly in the normal Java display (running full-screen on the primary display), and attempting to change the layers of the components in question does not help. I am using a custom RepaintManager to paint the components to the offscreen image, and I assume the problem lies with the order in which addDirtyRegion() is called for each of the components in question, but I can't think of a good way of identifying when this particular state occurs in order to prevent it. Hacking it so that the object which has just lost focus is not repainted stops the problem, but obviously causes the bigger problem that it is not repainted in all other, normal, circumstances. Is there any way of programmatically identifying this state, or of reordering things so that it does not occur? Many thanks, Nick

• How to make Jtable column contain checkboxes?

  Preface: I am horrible with java, and worse with java ui components. I have found several different tutorials on how to add buttons to tables, however I am struggling with adding checkboxes. I need to have a column that draws a text box ticked on default (cell renderer i think handles that), then on click of tickbox, unticks the box, redraws said box, and fires off an event somewhere I can track. currently I have a custom cellrenderer: public class GraphButtonCellRenderer extends JCheckBox implements TableCellRenderer { public GraphButtonCellRenderer() { } public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table, Object value, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus, int row, int column) { if(isSelected) setSelected(true); else setSelected(false); setMargin(new Insets(0, 16, 0, 0)); setIconTextGap(0); setBackground(new Color(255,255,255,0)); return this; }} Which currently handles drawing the tick box, but only ticks and unticks the box if that row is selected. But I don't know how to handle the events. Really what I am asking is possibly a link to a good tutorial on how to add checkboxes cleanly to a JTable. Any assist is greatly appreciated :)

• How to scan an array for certain information

  I've been doing an MSc Software Development conversion course, the main language of which is Java, since the end of September. We have our first assessed practical coming and I was hoping for some guidance. We have to create an array that will store 100 integers (all of which are between 1 and 10), which are generated by a random number generator, and then print out ten numbers of this array per line. For the second part, we need to scan these integers, count up how often each number appears and store the results in a second array. I've done the first bit okay, but I'm confused about how to do the second. I have been looking through the scanner class to see if it has any methods which I could use, but I don't see any. Could anyone point me in the right direction - not the answer, but perhaps which library it comes from?   Hi all, I have a problem regarding Java custom serialization. I have a graph of objects and want to configure where to stop when I serialize a root object from client to server. Let's make it a bit concrete, clear by giving a sample scenario. I have Classes of type Company Employee (abstract) Manager extends Employee Secretary extends Employee Analyst extends Employee Project Here are the relations: Company(1)---(n)Employee Manager(1)---(n)Project Analyst(1)---(n)Project Imagine, I'm on the client side and I want to create a new company, assign it 10 employees (new or some existing) and send this new company to the server. What I expect in this scenario is to serialize the company and all bounding employees to the server side, because I'll save the relations on the database. So far no problem, since the default Java serialization mechanism serializes the whole object graph, excluding the field which are static or transient. My goal is about the following scenario. Imagine, I loaded a company and its 1000 employees from the server to the client side. Now I only want to rename the company's name (or some other field, that directly belongs to the company) and update this record. This time, I want to send only the company object to the server side and not the whole list of employees (I just update the name, the employees are in this use case irrelevant). My aim also includes the configurability of saying, transfer the company AND the employees but not the Project-Relations, you must stop there. Do you know any possibility of achieving this in a generic way, without implementing the writeObject, readObject for every single Entity-Object? What would be your suggestions? I would really appreciate your answers. I'm open to any ideas and am ready to answer your questions in case something is not clear.

• Why aren't google api clients built on top of Apache's Abdera project ?

  Hey, Could anybody please explain that to me? As far as I can see, the developers of java's google api client library are reinventing the wheel. It's like writing a new JDK for a Java project. I'm aware of the fact that google data protocol is a little specific re atom publishing, but if one needs to use some of the fancy extensions and features that Apache Abdera project offers for this protocol, it is better not to use google api client library and implement the client from scratch with Abdera... And I'm sure that in a lot of cases its features such as Abdera's JCR adapter would become very handy for google docs, google translator toolkit and others. Now it's great that there is a google api client library to be used for google docs, but what am I going to do with the documents? I believe that in more than a half cases there is also a repository or database on the other side. And in that case, abdera is needed, not the simple google api clients that are only marshalling/unmarshalling the feeds... In fact, there is something to persist in all of the google APIs. It would make sense, if google decided to invest the effort into Abdera enhancement... This doesn't... Also for the question to be more specific: How are you developing google api clients, that need entry persistence (JCR for instance) ? What would be the best way to integrate a google api client library with Apache Abdera ?

• Maintaining a pool of DAO Class instances vs doing new operator

  we have been trying to benchmark our application performance in multiple way for sometime now. I always believed that object creation in java using Class.newInstance() was not slow (at least after 1.4 version of java). But we anyways did a test to use newInstance method vs mainitain an object pool of 1000 objects. We did about 200K iterations of loading data from DB using JDBC and populating these objects. I was amazed (even shocked) to see that newInstance code compared to object pool code was almost 10 times slower. These objects represent tables with about 50 fields and all string type. Can someone share there thoughts on this issue as now I am more confused if object pooling of atleast some DAO instances is a better option. The pool size as I see right now should be large enough to meet size of average requests. There is a flip side as my memory footprint will go up but I am beginning to wonder if this kind of idea makes sense atleast for some of the DAO entities representing tables of about 50 or more columns Please share your ideas and let me know if this has been tried by someone or am I missing some point here

  I'm trying to use Reducisaurus Web Service to minify CSS and Javascript but I've run into a problem... Suppose I've two unminified CSS at: http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/typography.php?font=Arial According to the docs I should call the web service like this: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red And if I want to minify both CSS files at once: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url1=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&url2=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red If I wanted to specify a different number of seconds for the cache (3600 for instance) I would use: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&expire_urls=3600 And again for both CSS files at once: http:/reducisaurus.appspot.com/css?url1=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&url2=http:/domain.com/dynamic/styles/theme.php?color=red&expire_urls=3600 Now my question is, how does Reducisaurus knows how to separate the URLs I want? How does it know that &expire_urls=3600 is not part of my URL? And how does it know that &url2=... is not a GET argument of url1? I'm I doing this right? Do I need to urlencode my URLs? I took a peek into the source code and although my Java is very poor it seems that the methods acquireFromRemoteUrl() and getSortedParameterNames() from the BaseServlet.java file hold the answers to my question - if a GET argument name contains - or _ they should be ignored?! What about multiple &url(n)s?

• Axis2 Webservice -> php

  Hi! If I have understood Axis2 correct i can construct a WebService and then access it with any SOAP compatible client. I have a java class with a couple of methods that I have written in Eclipse, and then automatically constructed a service with the Axis2 plugin from WTP. This is the methods of my class. public int test(int i){ return i+2; } public Car CarTest(int speed){ return new Car("Biltest", speed); } public CarFactoryAdapter getCarFactory(){ carFact.getCars().add(new Car("Bmw", 250)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("seat", 350)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("saab", 150)); carFact.getCars().add(new Car("volv", 50)); return new CarFactoryAdapter(carFact); } The code seems to work when I try it with soapUI and the Axis2-web interface has recognized the methods of my service. But when Iam trying the methods that receives parameters with PHP´s built in soapClient i get a Unknown exception. The getCarFactory methods works at least as expected, but it seems kind of crippled if I can´t send parameters. • Backreferences syntax in replacement strings (why dollar sign?)

  In Java, and it seems in a few other languages, backreferences in the pattern is preceded by a slash (e.g. \1, \2, \3, etc), but in a replacement string it's preceded by a dollar sign (e.g. $1, $2, $3, and also $0). Here's a snippet to illustrate: System.out.println( "left-right".replaceAll("(.*)-(.*)", "\\2-\\1") // WRONG!!! ); // prints "2-1" System.out.println( "left-right".replaceAll("(.*)-(.*)", "$2-$1") // CORRECT! ); // prints "right-left" System.out.println( "You want million dollar?!?".replaceAll("(\\w*) dollar", "US\\$ $1") ); // prints "You want US$ million?!?" Wouldn't that lead to a more cohesive and an easier to learn language? Wouldn't the syntax be more streamlined if statements 1 and 4 in the above were the "correct" ones instead of 2 and 3?

• How to change default locale in BIRT

  Hi everybody, I am working with the BIRT reporting engine and my current task is to implement internationalization for reports. We are using the webviewer to generate and download pdf reports. There is a parameter (__locale) which allows me to specify the locale that should be used to generate a report. So far everything works fine. There is an additional requirement I have not been able to implement, though. Additionally to the locale which is set by the http parameter there should also be the possibility to specify some kind of fallback locale. Take the following example: There are two property-files common_en_US.properties and common_en_GB.properties. The first locale to be used should be en_GB (__locale=en_GB). Everything works fine if the common_en_GB.properties file exist. But I would also like to tell BIRT to use common_en_US.properties if the en_GB-file cannot be found, which does not work as expected. I tried to solve this by manually setting the Java default locale before executing BIRT because I thought that BIRT would use the Java mechanism to resolve localized strings. Unfortunately this attempt does not work. Is there a different way to do what I would like to do? Is it possible to do something like that at all? Thanks a lot! Johannes

• Focus behavior in Applet-Javascript interaction

  I have a web page with an applet that opens a popup window and also makes Javascript calls. When that Javascript call results in a focus() call on an HTML input, that causes the browser window to push itself in front of the applet window. But only on certain browsers, namely MSIE. On Firefox the applet window remains on top. How can I keep that behavior consistent in MSIE? Note that using the old Microsoft VM for Java also achieves the desired (applet window in front) result. Does my program do not see the palyersNames?

  I'm just starting to learn JSP (and I'm pretty new to Java in general), and I'd like to use JSON-lib with it. I want to make a page something like this: <%@ page import="net.sf.json.JSONObject"%> <% String json = new JSONObject().put("hello", "world").toString(); out.println(json); %> I downloaded json-lib-2.3-jdk15.jar and put it in the same directory as the .jsp page. • How to import a class from default package

  Hi, I am using Eclipse 3.5 and I have created a project with some package structure along with the default package. I have one class in default package - Calculations.java and I want to make the use of that class in any of the package (for instance in com.company.calc). When I try to make the use of the class which is default package, its giving me compile error. Its not able to recognise the class in default package. Where is a problem? Calculations.java - source code public class Calculations{ native public int Calculate(int contextId); native public double GetProgress(int contextId); static { System.loadLibrary("Calc"); } } I can put my class in any other package. This class has some native method which is implemented in Delphi . If I put that class in any of the folder,I will have to make the change that DLL which I want to avoid(really - I can not). Thats why I put my class in the default package.
