  Chuck Norris doesn’t program with a keyboard. He stares the computer down until it does what he wants. All things need a name. We’ve tossed around a bunch of names for the framework of tools we’ve been working on, but one we kept coming back to was Chuck Norris. Why did we choose Chuck Norris? Well Chuck Norris sort of chose us. Everything we talked about, the name kept drawing us closer to it. We couldn’t escape Chuck Norris, no matter how hard we tried. So we gave in. • Windows Azure Use Case: High-Performance Computing (HPC)

You can find the main post here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/buckwoody/archive/2011/01/18/windows-azure-and-sql-azure-use-cases.aspx  Description: High-Performance Computing (also called Technical Computing) at its most simplistic is a layout of computer workloads where a “head node” accepts work requests, and parses them out to “worker nodes'”. This is useful in cases such as scientific simulations, drug research, MatLab work and where other large compute loads are required. It’s not the immediate-result type computing many are used to; instead, a “job” or group of work requests is sent to a cluster of computers and the worker nodes work on individual parts of the calculations and return the work to the scheduler or head node for the requestor in a batch-request fashion. This is typical to the way that many mainframe computing use-cases work. You can use commodity-based computers to create an HPC Cluster, such as the Linux application called Beowulf, and Microsoft has a server product for HPC using standard computers, called the Windows Compute Cluster that you can read more about here. The issue with HPC (from any vendor) that some organization have is the amount of compute nodes they need. Having too many results in excess infrastructure, including computers, buildings, storage, heat and so on. Having too few means that the work is slower, and takes longer to return a result to the calling application. Unless there is a consistent level of work requested, predicting the number of nodes is problematic. Implementation: Recently, Microsoft announced an internal partnership between the HPC group (Now called the Technical Computing Group) and Windows Azure. You now have two options for implementing an HPC environment using Windows. You can extend the current infrastructure you have for HPC by adding in Compute Nodes in Windows Azure, using a “Broker Node”.  You can then purchase time for adding machines, and then stop paying for them when the work is completed. This is a common pattern in groups that have a constant need for HPC, but need to “burst” that load count under certain conditions. The second option is to install only a Head Node and a Broker Node onsite, and host all Compute Nodes in Windows Azure. This is often the pattern for organizations that need HPC on a scheduled and periodic basis, such as financial analysis or actuarial table calculations. • SQL SERVER – SSMS 2012 Reset Keyboard Shortcuts to Default

  As a technologist, I love my laptop very much and I do not lend it to anyone as I am usually worried that my settings would be messed up when I get it back from its borrower. Honestly, I love how I have set up my laptop and I enjoy the settings and programs I have placed on my computer. If someone changes things there – it will surely be annoying for me. Recently at one of the conferences I was attending in, a small accident happened – one of the speaker’s hard drives failed. The owner immediately panicked due to this and had no clue what to do. I suggested that he may not be able to show the demos but can still show a few things with the product. He accepted my suggestion and finished the presentation. Good thing everybody looked satisfied. Little did I know that a small accident was waiting for me later that day. When I opened my SQL Server Denali, all my shortcuts were totally out of order. When I hit F5, instead of executing query, it was opening up some debugging screen for me. I was very much annoyed so I decided to surf the Internet for me to know how I could reset it to SQL Server 2012 default shortcut. There were so many different advices which further confused me. After reading 4-5 different methods, I used the following method to reset my SQL Server 2012 keyboard shortcuts: Go to SSMS > Tools >> Import and Export Settings… As I wanted to reset all the settings I selected the “Reset all settings” option, but you can select other options as per your need. I suggest you save your current Settings; however, in my case, I did not like the current option so I just decided to overwrite my settings. Here I have two options –  I can either set my shortcut to SQL Server 2012 settings or Visual Studio 2010. I went ahead with the SQL Server 2012 option. Success! • How to share two keyboard on the same laptop, french iso layout and usa ansi layout keyboard with usb?

  I recently buy a "noppoo choc mini" with this specific ANSI US-INTERNATIONAL pc84 layout. This specific keyboard have only 84 key , a 60% (compact tenkeyless) reduced layout My problem is simple, there is no keyboard layout into Ubuntu 12.04 which correspond to this usa normal ansi layout ... so it's the same problem with reduced version and only 84 key .. I search a template of normal ANSI US-INTERNATIONAL for xmodmap/xkb, and after i can try to manually map the other key. I search on google, and i don't find any other user which have same problem, so it's seem i have not the good keywoard to search this information.. Edit 1 : Here you can see there is probably a bug in ubuntu, because the layout for USA with dead key is not correct ! It seem it's impossible in ubuntu and "dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration" to share two different physical layout (ANSI and EU ISO) on the same computer ... EDIT4 Ok, it seems i can switch the physical layout (ISO <- ANSI) with this command in terminal : setxkbmap -layout us setxkbmap -layout us -variant alt-intl an setxkbmap -layout fr It's very complicated qnd it seem ubuntu 12.04 have big problem with keyboard manager ... because all works great with these two commands, without ANY change into the system parameters keyboard !!! Second bug ? The image of the layout for fr is buggy, the layout is not ISO, but i can press on the letter "< " at the left of right shift without any problem ! Yahoo started working on Pig for their application deployment on Hadoop. The goal of Yahoo to manage their unstructured data. What is Pig and What is Pig Latin? Pig is a high level platform for creating MapReduce programs used with Hadoop and the language we use for this platform is called PIG Latin. The pig was designed to make Hadoop more user-friendly and approachable by power-users and nondevelopers. PIG is an interactive execution environment supporting Pig Latin language. The language Pig Latin has supported loading and processing of input data with series of transforming to produce desired results. PIG has two different execution environments 1) Local Mode – In this case all the scripts run on a single machine. 2) Hadoop – In this case all the scripts run on Hadoop Cluster. Pig Latin vs SQL Pig essentially creates set of map and reduce jobs under the hoods. Due to same users does not have to now write, compile and build solution for Big Data. The pig is very similar to SQL in many ways. The Ping Latin language provide an abstraction layer over the data. It focuses on the data and not the structure under the hood. Pig Latin is a very powerful language and it can do various operations like loading and storing data, streaming data, filtering data as well various data operations related to strings. The major difference between SQL and Pig Latin is that PIG is procedural and SQL is declarative. In simpler words, Pig Latin is very similar to SQ Lexecution plan and that makes it much easier for programmers to build various processes. Whereas SQL handles trees naturally, Pig Latin follows directed acyclic graph (DAG). DAGs is used to model several different kinds of structures in mathematics and computer science. Nik Kalyani will be the speaker and you will learn a great deal from him. DotNetNuke Module Development with the MVP Pattern This session focuses on introducing attendees to the Model-View-Presenter pattern, support for which was recently introduced in the DotNetNuke Core. We'll start with a quick overview of the pattern, compare it to MVC, and then dive right into code. We will start with fundamentals and then develop a full-featured module using this pattern. In order to do justice to the pattern, we will use ASP.NET WebForms controls minimally and implement most of the UI using jQuery plug-ins. Finally, to increase audience participation (both present at the meeting and remote), we will use a hackathon-style model and allow anybody, anywhere to follow along with the presentation and code their own MVP-based solution that they can share online during or after the session. • Going Metro

  When it was announced, I confess was somewhat surprised by the striking new "Metro" User Interface for Windows 8, based on Swiss typography, Bauhaus design, tiles, touches and gestures, and the new Windows Runtime (WinRT) API on which Metro apps were to be built. It all seemed to have come out of nowhere, like field mushrooms in the night and seemed quite out-of-character for a company like Microsoft, which has hung on determinedly for over twenty years to its quaint Windowing system. Many were initially puzzled by the lack of support for plug-ins in the "Metro" version of IE10, which ships with Win8, and the apparent demise of Silverlight, Microsoft's previous 'radical new framework'. Win8 signals the end of the road for Silverlight apps in the browser, but then its importance here has been waning for some time, anyway, now that HTML5 has usurped its most compelling use case, streaming video. As Shawn Wildermuth and others have noted, if you're doing enterprise, desktop development with Silverlight then nothing much changes immediately, though it seems clear that ultimately Silverlight will die off in favor of a single WPF/XAML framework that supports those technologies that were pioneered on the phones and tablets. There is a mystery here. Is Silverlight dead, or merely repurposed? The more you look at Metro, the more it seems to resemble Silverlight. A lot of the philosophies underpinning Silverlight applications, such as the fundamentally asynchronous nature of the design, have moved wholesale into Metro, along with most the Microsoft Silverlight dev team. As Simon Cooper points out, "Silverlight developers, already used to all the principles of sandboxing and separation, will have a much easier time writing Metro apps than desktop developers". Metro certainly has given the framework formerly known as Silverlight a new purpose. It has enabled Microsoft to bestow on Windows 8 a new "duality", as both a traditional desktop OS supporting 'legacy' Windows applications, and an OS that supports a new breed of application that can share functionality such as search, that understands, and can react to, the full range of gestures and screen-sizes, and has location-awareness. It's clear that Win8 is developed in the knowledge that the 'desktop computer' will soon be a very large, tilted, touch-screen monitor. Windows owes its new-found versatility to the lessons learned from Windows Phone, but it's developed for the big screen, and with full support for familiar .NET desktop apps as well as the new Metro apps. But the old mouse-driven Windows applications will soon look very passé, just as MSDOS character-mode applications did in the nineties. Cheers, Tony.

• Executable Resumes

  Over the past twelve months I have been thinking a lot about executable specifications. Long considered the holy grail of agile software development, executable specifications means expressing a program’s functionality in a way that is both readable by the customer and computer verifiable in an automatic, repeatable way. With the current generation of BDD and ATDD tools executable specifications seem finally within the reach of a significant percentage of the development community. Lately, and partly as a result of my craftsmanship tour, I have decided that soon I am going to have to get a job (gasp!). As Dave Hoover describes in Apprenticeship Patters, “you … have mentors and kindred spirits that you meet with periodically, [but] when it comes to developing software, you work alone.” The time may have come where the only way for me to feel satisfied and enriched by my work is to seek out a work environment where I can work with people smarter and more knowledgeable than myself. Having been on both sides of the interview desk many times I know how difficult and unreliable the process can be. Therefore, I am proposing the idea of executable resumes. As a journeyman programmer looking for a fruitful work environment I plan to write an application that demonstrates my understanding of the state of the art. Potential employers can download, view and execute my executable resume and judge wether my aesthetic sensibility matches their own. The concept of the executable resume is based upon the following assertion: A line of code answers a thousand interview questions Asking people about their experiences and skills is not a direct way of assessing their value to your organisation. Often it simple assesses their ability to mislead an interviewer. An executable resume demonstrates: The highest quality code that the person is able to produce. That the person is sufficiently motivated to produce something of value in their own time. That the person loves their craft. The idea of publishing a program to demonstrate a developer’s skills comes from Rob Conery, who suggested that each developer should build their own blog engine since it is the public representation of their level of mastery. Rob said: Luke had to build his own lightsaber – geeks should have to build their own blogs. And that should be their resume. In honour of Rob’s inspiration I plan to build a blog engine as my executable resume. While it is true that the world does not need another blog engine it is as good a project as any, it is a well understood domain, and I have not found an existing blog engine that I like. Executable resumes fit well with the software craftsmanship metaphor. It is not difficult to imagine that under the guild system master craftsmen may have accepted journeymen based on the quality of the work they had produced in the past. We now understand that when it comes to the functionality of an application that code is the final arbiter. Why not apply the same rule to hiring?

• How to stream H264 Video from camera over FTP?

  I bought a h264 security camera system last year and set it up to ftp video to my computer. I was able to get the video to play (even though it played a little fast) on Ubuntu 11.04 using mplayer. A few months ago, I did a fresh install of 12.04 and I cannot seem to get the video to play with mplayer, smplayer or VLC. I have the restricted formats video packages installed and when playing with any of the players, all I get is a gray video. When calling mplayer from the command line to play the video with no options, I get a lot of these errors: [h264 @ 0x7f278c61f280]concealing 1320 DC, 1320 AC, 1320 MV errors No pts value from demuxer to use for frame! pts after filters MISSING I'm not a video expert and have been coming up with a lot of dead ends when Googling for this. Could someone offer some advice about how to play these videos? • Grub2 -- Dualboot Ubuntu LTS 12.04 and Windows 7 -- Detects two Windows 7 (loader) entries

  this is the first question I have ever asked the Ubuntu Community. :D I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, but I understand the basics and know how to navigate the Terminal. I also know how to ask for/research my problems before asking for/ help. I have scoured the internet high and low and learned much of how Grub2 works. But nothing has helped me to solve my problem. My problem is this: I have a computer that has three hard drives. It previously had Windows XP, but I upgraded to Windows 7. I also installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin). During my installation of Windows 7, there was a failure and I had to restart the installation. Afterwards, I installed Ubuntu. After some trouble removing all traces of the XP OS (Ubuntu auto-detected it, but not Windows 7) I got the two OSes working flawlessly. Or, almost. When booting up, Grub2 used to display Ubuntu, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, Other Versions of Linux, memtest, followed by "Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1" and "Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1". I eventually removed Recovery Mode, Other Versions, and Memtest. Now, when I run: sudo update-grub I get this print-out: Generating grub.cfg ... Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-26-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-26-generic Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1 I would like to remove "Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1", as it is a broken entry that shouldn't exist, and must have been installed during my first Windows 7 attempt. I cannot find a Windows 7 entry in /etc/grub.d... And I don't know where to look. Here is a layout of my hard drives: /dev/sda1/ (1.82 TiB), NTFS ("Media") /dev/sdb1/ (100 Mib), NTFS ("System Reserved") /dev/sdb2/ (149 GiB), NTFS ("Windows 7") /dev/sdb3/ (149 GiB), Extended (" ") /dev/sdb4/ (145 GiB), ext4 (" ") /dev/sdb5/ (4 GiB), linux-swap (" ") /dev/sdc1/ (488.28 GiB), NTFS ("Downloads") /dev/sdc2/ (488.28 GiB), NTFS ("AltMedia") /dev/sdc3/ (886.45 GiB), NTFS ("Personal") unallocated (2.09 MiB), unallocated What I think has happened: Windows 7 installed first and badly. I installed it again. First, there was Windows XP to guide where the bootloader went to so it was put on /dev/sdb1/. But, the second time no such guide existed so the machine put another bootloader on /dev/sda1/. sda1, by the way, is the only partition on a 2TB drive. No boot record partition appears to exist according to gedit. I'm not sure where Grub2 is getting this information from. But, there it is. Is there anything somebody can do to help me? • Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2): Keyboard and Touchpad don't work correcltly

  I'm dealing with Ubuntu since about 5 years and installed it on several laptops. Now I'm stuck when trying to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 on a brand new Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2). I sucessfully can start Ubuntu from an USB stick, the Ubuntu desktop is visible, a mouse cursor is visible. But there is no respond to keyboard or touchpad input. So I cannot really install Ubuntu on the Macbook. The details of my approach: Prepare an empty USB stick Download "ISO 2 USB EFI Booter for Mac" and copy the file bootX64.efi to the USB drive as /efi/boot/bootX64.efi. Download Ubuntu 12.04.1 Desktop for Mac from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/1-amd64+mac.iso and copy the iso the USB drive as /efi/boot/boot.iso Put the USB stick into the Macbook Press and hold the "alt" button while switching the Macbook on Select "EFI Boot" from the boot menu that appears and press the Return / Enter key Immediately a black terminal screen appears with the headline "Welcome to the Ubuntu ISO << - EFI booter". 30 seconds later the familiar Ubuntu startup graphics screen is showing. Further 20 seconds later Ubuntu has started and the desktop is visible - in wonderfully fine resolution Now the computer does not respond to any actions on the touchpad nor the keyboard Who did install Ubuntu on this Macbook Pro 13" Retina (10,2) successfully? On this site https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro this unit is not listed yet, anyway. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Dirk PS: I could now install ubuntu with an external USB Keyboard/Mouse Set. But now, after showing the grub menu, a kernel panic error appears and booting stops :-/ Seems that the ubuntu images fit not to a macbook pro retina 13" (10,2) yet. PPS: Ok, there are new facts: If I edit the boot options and enter " nomodeset noapic" ubuntu starts and Keyboard and Touchpad work! Now I have to enable WiFi... PPPS: After installing Broadcom firmware from USB Live stick as described in other posts, WiFi was enabled. Then I could update ubuntu normally to 12.10. After this, I must not enter "nomodeset noapic" in the grub menu anymore. Last Thing now is the Touchpad. The driver seems not to be there. The touch pad is only showing as mouse. t.b.c.

• EPM 11.1.2 - R&A DATABASE CONNECTIONS DISAPPEAR FROM THE "DATABASE CONNECTION MANAGER

  When accessing the database connection panel through Reporting and Analysis all previously entered database connection do not appear. This is due to a bug in the Windows SMB2 protocol. To work around this bug you have to disable the protocol. On Windows 2008 the protocol is automatically enabled. This needs to be done on both the servers and the clients. Note that “server” is the server which hosts RAF repository service and RM1 folder, “client” – server which hosts replicated Repository service that accesses repository files via network i.e. \\<server_host>\RM1  In order to disable SMB 2.0 on the server side, follow these steps:  1. Run "regedit" on Windows Server 2008 based computer.  2. Expand and locate the sub tree as follows.  HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters  3. Add a new REG_DWORD key with the name of "Smb2" (without quotation mark)  Value name: Smb2  Value type: REG_DWORD  0 = disabled  1 = enabled 4. Set the value to 0 to disable SMB 2.0, or set it to 1 to re-enable SMB 2.0.  5. Reboot the server.  To disable SMB 2.0 for Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 systems that are the “client” systems run the following commands:  sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi  sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled  Note there's an extra " " (space) after the "=" sign.  To enable back SMB 2.0 for Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 systems that  are the “client” systems run the following commands: sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/mrxsmb20/nsi  sc config mrxsmb20 start= auto  Again, note there's an extra " " (space) after the "=" sign.

• Listen to Local FM Radio in Windows 7 Media Center

  If you have a supported tuner card and connected FM antenna, you can listen to your favorite local over-the-air FM stations in Windows 7 Media Center. Before the FM radio option will be available in Windows Media Center, you’ll need to have a TV or Radio tuner card installed and configured. If you have a TV tuner card installed, you may already have a Radio tuner as well. Many TV tuner cards also have built in FM tuners. Open Windows Media Center, scroll the “Music” and over to “Radio.” Click on “FM Radio.”   The radio will turn on and you’ll see the current station number listed in the white box. Just below are standard “Seek” and “Tune” buttons, as well as “Preset” options. Tuning works just like a typical FM radio. Click on the (-) or (+) buttons to “Tune” or “Seek” up and down the dial. If you already know the frequency of the station, enter the numbers using the numeric keypad on the remote control or keyboard. To save the current station you’re listening to as a preset, click on the “Save as Preset” button. Any suggestion for our NTFS file system performance improvement. Our SQL Server box is running only SQL Server and nothing else. Please advise.” When I receive questions which I have just listed above, it often sends me deep thought. Honestly, I know a lot but there are plenty of things, I believe can be built with community knowledge base. Today I need you to help me to complete this list. I will start the list and you help me complete it. NTFS File System Performance Best Practices for SQL Server Disable Indexing on disk volumes Disable generation of 8.3 names (command: FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLE8DOT3 1) Disable last file access time tracking (command: FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLELASTACCESS 1) Keep some space empty (let us say 15% for reference) on drive is possible (Only on Filestream Data storage volume) Defragement the volume Add your suggestions here… The one which I often get a pretty big debate is NTFS allocation size. • Ubuntu turns off instead of suspend / sleeping

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 on my notebook as the main OS. How ever, I've been facing a serious problem: Every time I try to suspend it, or it just stays idle for a while, the computer shuts down, instead of suspending. It actually seems to be suspended, but when I press the button the awake it, it turns on, the open works are all lost. How can i fix this? P.s: On windows 7 the suspend / sleep resumes just fine. • Ubuntu 11.10 running in windows 7 (wubi) AND on a separate partition

  I am in a very strange situation and need some help: I installed Ubuntu 11.10 through Wubi a while back so that I can use it alongside Windows 7. I was running out of space on my disk when trying to install applications. Without understanding how Wubi worked, I partitioned my C drive (creating a new 90 GB partition) in Windows, booted from the Ubuntu 11.10 install/live disk, and used the "something else" option to create a ext4 (setting the mount point to root) and swap space partitions (/sda5 and /sda6). After the install, my computer no longer boots with the previous Wubi menu and is now using the Linux grub. The options I have are /sda2, which boots Windows 7; /sda1, which doesn't do anything and reloads the same menu, and the run Linux options. So I now have Ubuntu running on a separate partition, as well as the original Wubi install. I want to delete the seperate partition and go back to running Ubuntu on Wubi...if I remove the partition will I need the Windows 7 disk to restore the boot loader? I dont have the Windows 7 disk on me so what is the best way to clean this up so I get rid of the seperate partition? -------------------------------------------------UPDATE----------------------------------------------------- ============================================================================================================ thank you so much for your response. Actually, it would be fantastic if I could migrate my Wubi install into the new partition because I had downloaded the AOSP on the Wubi install (as well as other files) and would love to preserve them. If i can do that and work on the new partition with the old files than that would be great, and I can worry about wiping out the partition completely later on i.e. when I have the windows disk or something. Can you tell me how to do this migration?? So when I select the /sda2, it loads up my Windows. If i click on the Linux, it loads up the newly install Linux (my files that were on the Wubi install aren't there) fine. If I click on the /sda1 (SYSTEM_DRIVE... this is what the Wubi was using to boot the menu that let me select Windows 7 or Ubuntu)... it fails and just reloads the original menu. • ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP Video card not recognized properly

  I have an ASUS ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP in this system (yeah, I know how old it is). I've been on Ubuntu since 10.04, and the system has never properly recognized the card. I have always had the VESA drivers installed. Now that I have the time to address the problem, 12.04 was listing the card as "Unknown" under the System Settings. Meanwhile, Sysinfo recognizes the card as: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV730 Pro AGP [Radeon HD 4600 Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 0028 So I know that this card should be using the radeon driver (or even the radeonhd driver). However, when I installed the mesa-utils package, the card is suddenly reported as: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300) So now, I'm completely at a loss. It seems that the llvmpipe stuff has to do with OpenGL, but it still appears that I don't have the proper video driver installed. That being said, anyone know what I can do to force the system to recognize the card and use the radeon driver? [EDIT 05.28] I did look at some other information, including glxinfo and a couple of other commands (it was REALLY late, so I don't remember the other commands) and I got these: glxinfo | grep vendor: server glx vendor string: SGI client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI OpenGL vendor string: X.org glxinfo | grep renderer: OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV730 One of the other commands gave a whole lot of info and near the end stated that the activation string for the radeon driver was "modprobe radeon". I've tried that from sudo and as root, but it doesn't seem to change anything. I'm at a complete loss. I've even added the xorg-edgers ppa to my Software Sources and updated and rebooted the system, but nothing has changed. Most of all, I can't seem to find any documentation on this issue, as it seems that it's assumed that the radeon driver will install automatically, no questions asked. I feel like such a newbie. Does anyone have any ideas on this? • Too Few Women in IT!

  Last year, only 1% of attendees at Devoxx were women . This year, Devoxx addressed the issue in a panel entitled "Why We Should Target Women." On the panel were Kim Ross, Régina ten Bruggencate, Trisha Gee, Antonio Goncalves and Claude Falguiére. The moderator was Martijn Verburg. The discussion focused on how to attract women to programming and how to get current women programmers to be more active in the community. The panelists agreed that the IT field should not just attract more women but also men of different ethnic backgrounds. The lack of women in programming is in part a cultural issue that differs from region to region. In developed countries, very few women work as programmers whereas in Brazil and India a lot of women pursue careers in IT.  Women in developed countries perceive the field as isolating and very few young women graduate in computer science.  This perception of isolation was based in reality decades ago, but that is no longer the case today. Main ideas discussed by the panel: - Parents should encourage their daughters to play with Lego and learn programming - More organizations should target girls in high schools and young women in university to expose them to programming.  Duchess organization is planning on being more involved with young girl events and mentoring. - Women tend to be more self-critical about their skills and are intimidated by high skill requirements in job advertisements. Companies should change job advertisements to get more women to interviews. - Panelists don't recommend affirmative action because women feel favored and lose credibility. They want to be judged for their skills. - Panelists recommend acting the same way when dealing with either female or male co-workers and managers - Women need mentors (men or women) to learn to become speakers at conferences and to promote themselves better - Men should be sensitive to the fact that women are alone at work to respond to men teasing. The balance of power at work is different from a social setting. - Men also experience discrimination on the job. It is more difficult for men to take time off when their children are sick, for example. Equal valuing of parental obligations could result in equal pay for women.   A common question – I often get from Oracle/MySQL Professionals: “What is the Equivalent to CURRENT_TIMESTAMP in SQL Server?” Here is a common question I often get from SQL Server Professionals: “What are differences between Difference Between CURRENT_TIMESTAMP and GETDATE ()?” Very simple question but have showed up so frequently that I feel like to write about it. Well in SQL Server GETDATE() is Equivalent to CURRENT_TIMESTAMP. However, if you use CURRENT_TIMESTAMP in your select statement it will work fine. You can see in the above example – both of them returns the same value. Now let us go to next question regarding difference between GETDATE and CURRENT_TIMESTAMP. Well, the matter of the fact, there is no difference between them in SQL Server (Reference Link). CURRENT_TIMESTAMP is an ANSI SQL function, whereas GETDATE is T-SQL implementation of the same function. Both of them derive value from the operating system of the computer on which SQL Server instance is running. Above discussion prompts another question – in this case, what should one use GETDATE or CURRENT_TIMESTAMP? Well, this is indeed tricky and interesting question. I think I am very comfortable using the GETDATE () so I will go to use it but a matter of the fact there is no right or wrong answer. If you want to follow ancient saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, I suggest using the GETDATE (), or continue using CURRENT_TIMESTAMP. With that said, there is one very important property we all need to keep in mind. If you use CURRENT_TIMESTAMP while creating an object, they are automatically converted to GETDATE() and stored internally. To illustrate what I am suggesting here is the example - Create a table using the following script CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestTable]( [Cold2] [datetime] NULL ) ON [PRIMARY] GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[TestTable] ADD DEFAULT (CURRENT_TIMESTAMP) FOR [Cold2] GO Now go to SSMS and generate the script for the table and you will notice following syntax. CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestTable]( [Cold2] [datetime] NULL ) ON [PRIMARY] GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[TestTable] ADD DEFAULT (GETDATE()) FOR [Cold2] GO You can notice that SQL Server have automatically converted CURRENT_TIMESTAMP to GETDATE(). • Configuring Multi-Tap on Synaptics Touchpad

  I am having a hard time configuring my notebook's touchpad. The touchpad already works. It successfully responds to one-finger tap, two-finger tap and two-finger vertical scrolling. What I want to accomplish: change two-finger tap action from right-mouse click to middle-mouse click add three-finger tap functionality to yield right-mouse click action (i have checked that the three-finger tap is supported by my laptop's touchpad since it works on Windows) I read on a forum to use this as a guide. I have successfully accomplished point 1 with synclient TapButton2=2. However, I have to do it everytime I log in. I have tried to put that command on /etc/rc.local but the computer always boots and logins with the default configuration. Regarding point 2, I have tried synclient TapButton3=3 but it doesn't do anything when I three-finger tap the touchpad.
