• SQL server deadlock between INSERT and SELECT statement

  Hi! I've got a problem with multiple deadlocks on SQL server 2005. This one is between an INSERT and a SELECT statement. There are two tables. Table 1 and Table2. Table2 has Table1's PK (table1_id) as foreign key. Index on table1_id is clustered. The INSERT inserts a single row into table2 at a time. The SELCET joins the 2 tables. (it's a long query which might take up to 12 secs to run) According to my understanding (and experiments) the INSERT should acquire an IS lock on table1 to check referential integrity (which should not cause a deadlock). • What are the Open Source alternatives to WPF/XAML?

  If we've learned anything from HTML/CSS it's that, declarative languages (like XML) work best to describe User Interfaces because: It's easy to build code preprocessors that can template the code effectively. The code is in a well defined well structured (ideally) format so it's easy to parse. The technology to effectively parse or crawl an XML based source file already exists. The UIs scripted code becomes much simpler and easier to understand. It simple enough that designers are able to design the interface themselves. Programmers suck at creating UIs so it should be made easy enough for designers. I recently took a look at the meat of a WPF application (ie. the XAML) and it looks surprisingly familiar to the declarative language style used in HTML. It's apparent to me that the current state of desktop UI development is largely fractionalized, otherwise there wouldn't be so much duplicated effort in the domain of graphical user interface design (IE. GTK, XUL, Qt, Winforms, WPF, etc). There are 45 GUI platforms for Python alone It's seems reasonable to me that there should be a general purpose, open source, standardized, platform independent, markup language for designing desktop GUIs. Much like what the W3C made HTML/CSS into. WPF, or more specifically XAML seems like a pretty likely step in the right direction. Now that the 'browser wars' are over should we look forward to a future of 'desktop gui wars?' Note: This topic is relatively subjective in the attempt to be 'future-thinking.' I think that desktop GUI development in its current state sucks ((really)hard) and, even though WPF is still in it's infancy, it presents a likely solution to the problem. Languages: C++, Python, Ruby as plugin languages not base languages Note: I'm not sure if XUL deserves mentioning in this list because it's less of a desktop GUI language and more of a make-webapps-run-on-the-desktop language. Plus, it requires a browser to run. IE, it's 'DHTML for the desktop.' • jScrollPane jEditable DOM problems

  Hello world, I am having a funky problem. See (this link won't disappear): www.skitzo.org/~el/bugjeditable.png for the firebug output screenshot. Here's my code. I run getJSON() to fetch the info from the PHP which pulls from DB and I fill a div with the result. I have jScrollPane and jEditable so a user can scroll down and click to edit any of the content. It works sometimes and then it doesn't work which makes me wonder if the browser is not interpreting the code properly or if I am misunderstanding fundamental DOM concepts here.... There are two general types of Activities of interest - ones base on a Project and ones based on an Account. The notion of Project and Account have other features totally unrelated to both each other and capturing allocations of time, and each is modeled as a table in the database. For a given Allocation of time however, it makes sense to not care whether the allocation was made to either a Project or an Account, so an ActivityBase class abstracts away the difference. An ActivityBase is either a ProjectActivity or an AccountingActivity (object model is below). Back to the database though, there is no direct value in having tables for ProjectActivity and AccountingActivity. BUT the Allocation table needs to store something in the column for it's ActivityBase. Should that something be the Id of the Project / Account or a reference to tables for ProjectActivity / Accounting? When I call the html page then .js file also included. In the .js,I am using $('div').live('pageshow',function(){}). I am calling the html file from the .js(using $.mobile.changePage("htmlpage")). My problem : consider, I have two html files. second.html file is called with in the one.js. when I show the second.html, that time one.js is reload again. • Mouseover triggered on absolute positioned div

  Objective Have a small magnifying glass icon that appears in the top right corner of a table cell when the table cell is hovered over. Mousing over the magnifying glass icon and clicking it will open a dialog window to show detailed information about the item in that particular table cell. I want to reuse the same icon for hundreds of table cells without recreating it each time. Partial Solution Have a single <span> that is absolutely positioned and hidden. When a _previewable table cell is hovered, the <span> is moved to the correct location and shown. This <span> is also moved in the DOM to be a child of the _previewable table cell. This enables a click handler attached to the <span> to find the _previewable parent, and get information from it's jquery data() object that is used to populate the contents of the dialog. At this point, I've only tested this in Chrome. Questions Why would mouseout be called on _previewable, when the mouse is still within the boundaries of _previewable? Is it because the <span> is absolutely positioned? How can I make this work, without recreating the <span> and it's click handler on each AJAX table referesh?

• Using label tags in a validation summary error list?

  I was thinking about making use of <label> tags in my validation error summary on a failed form submit and I can't figure out if it is going to get me in trouble down the line. Can anyone think of a good reason to avoid this approach? Usability, functionality, design, or other issues are all helpful. I really like the idea of clicking a line item in the error list and being jumped to the offending input element, especially in a mobile HTML scenario where vertical orientation is more common and scrolling is a pain. So far the only problem I can find is that labels don't navigate for radio buttons or checkboxes without individual IDs (Clicking a label for a single ID-tagged radio/checkbox element alters its selection). It doesn't make it any worse than no label, though.   I am working on designing an IT Asset database. Here I am working on a page used to view details on a specific asset determined by an asset id. Here I grab $id from $_GET["id"]; When $id is null, the page does not load. When $id does not match any entry within the database, the page loads but no asset table is printed. In both these cases, I would like to display a message like "There is no database entry for that Asset ID" How would this be handled? • Selecting and inserting text at cursor location in textfield with JS/jQuery

  Hello. I have developed a system in PHP which processes #hashtags like on Twitter. Now I'm trying to build a system that will suggest tags as I type. When a user starts writing a tag, a drop-down list should appear beneath the textarea with other tags that begin with the same string. Right now, I have it working where if a user types the hash key (#) the list will show up with the most popular #hashtags. When a tag is clicked, it is inserted at the end of the text in the textarea. I need the tag to be inserted at the cursor location instead. Here's my code; it operates on a textarea with class "facebook_status_text" and a div with class "fbssts_floating_suggestions" that contains an unordered list of links. When I test the web service on it's own though, it does return a JSON string so that part seems to be working. Any help is greatly appreciated :)

• jQuery hold form submit until "continue" button pressed

  I am trying to submit a form, which I have had working, but have now modified it to include a modal jQuery UI box, so that it won't submit until the user presses "continue". I've had various problems with this, including getting the form to hold until that button is pressed, but I think I have found a solution to that, but implementing it, I am getting a SyntaxError which I can't find the source of. With the help of kevin B managed to find the answer was the form was submitting, but the returned JSON response wasn't quite formatted right. The response was that the form wasn't being submitted, so that problem is still occurring. So updated the code with the provided feedback, now need to find out why the form isnt submitting. I know its something to do with the 2nd function isnt recognising the submit button has been pressed, so need to know how to submit that form data without the form needing to be submitted again. • jQuery tablesorter sorting not working

  I'm using jQuery tablesorter plugin to generate dynamically a table from a csv file, and that part is working fine. However whenever i try to sort the table by clicking on the table headers, firebug reports this problem in the console: parsers is undefined return parsers[i].type;\n Initially i though this problem was being caused by the table not being ready after the document loads, so i fixed that by manually calling tablesorter() after my table was rendered from the csv file. this didn't fix the issue though. Also, at the very end of the table, the table is drawn garbled with some gray areas at the end. I suppose this is related to the error above. • Having a problem inserting a foreign key data into a table using a PHP form

  I am newbee with PHP and MySQL and need help... I have two tables (Staff and Position) in the database. The Staff table (StaffId, Name, PositionID (fk)). The Position table is populated with different positions (Manager, Supervisor, and so on). The two tables are linked with a PositionID foreign key in the Staff table. I have a staff registration form with textfields asking for the relevant attributes and a dynamically populated drop down list to choose the position. I need to insert the user's entry into the staff table along with the selected position. However, when inserting the data, I get the following error (Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails). How do I insert the position selected by the user into the staff table?
