• Windows port forwarding

  This is the scenario: A Windows XP client A Linux Server The client is natted/firewalled/unreacheable from outside, the linux server is public. I need to allow the client, once upon some conditions, to expose the remote desktop port (3389) on the Linux Server, somethig like ssh -R 3389:localhost:3389. I dream it as a service, or something like that so I can start and stop the "forwarding-session" on my needs. I've to pilot this session from some program-language (python or ruby mostly). Any hint? • Web Applications Desktop Integrator (WebADI) Feature for Install Base Mass Update in 12.1.3

  Purpose The integration of WebADI technology with the Install Base Mass Update function is designed to make creation and update of bulk item instances much easier than in the past. What is it? WebADI is an Excel-based desktop application where users can download an Excel template with item instances pre-populated based on search criteria.  Users can create and update item instances in the Excel sheet and finally upload the Excel data using an "upload" option available in the Excel menu. On upload, the modified data will bulk upload to interface tables which are processed by an asynchronous concurrent program that users can monitor for the uploaded results. Advantage: This allows users to work in a disconnected Environment: session time outs can be avoided, as once a template is downloaded the user can work in a disconnected environment and once all updates are done the new input can be uploaded. • Can the traditional remote desktop client be accessed in Windows RT?

  As mentioned in another question, I've been unable to connect through the Remote Desktop metro app to some computers, in particular those requiring VPN access or load balancers. I'm considering purchasing a Microsoft Surface RT, but given that the app store hasn't matured significantly yet and some niche software will likely never be ported to the Modern UI, I must have acess to remote systems somehow. Until Citrix fixes the receiver app for Windows 8, I'm stuck using remote desktop. Which doesn't work. I've heard that Windows RT comes with some of the Microsoft desktop programs built in, like Microsoft Office and File Explorer. Is the "normal" Remote Desktop Connection program available in Windows RT, and if so, is it 100% compatible with previous versions?

• How to migrate Notepad++ settings?

  I am trying to portabilize every program I use if possible, and Notepad++ is on the list. The only problem is that I've had a native installation until now so that I'm not totally sure which settings files need to be moved to the portable directory. Surely there's a function tucked away somewhere in NPP exactly for this purpose, or some plugin out there? I mean the developers have literally thought of everything else, yet this is the one thing I cannot find specifically anywhere in the NPP wiki or otherwise, and I don't want to miss an important file. Here is the closest I've gotten: Notepad++'s configuration files and Where are all the files? Should I just copy every configuration file listed on the first link?

• Backup windows image to thumb drive?

  I recently bought a new netbook from Malasia. It doesn't have a brand name, or officially supporting drivers. It came with a version of windows, and working drivers for all the hardware - but I want to install Ubuntu on here. Being a netbook, it has no CD/DVD drive. I want some free easy to use software to image the entire drive onto a thumb drive, which I could later use to boot up a recovery program to reinstall windows, should I fail to get all the hardware supported on Linux. I have already done some research and found driver backup/restore software in this thread, and will probably use that failing a more all-encompasing solution.

• Why doesn't my Nvidia driver support 1280*1024?

  EDIT: I think the problem is in the NVIDIA x server, that doesn't support an RGB screen from 1990. The screen was the best of them all when it was released. This a strange thing! In windows the EDID must work because 1280*1024 is used as max resolution, but in ubuntu those stuff aren't being received, so how do I tell ubuntu/nivida to find those EDID stuff? Hi, I have an external monitor which is an 20" 1280*1024. In windows 7 it works fine with that resolution but in ubuntu it can't. The screens model name is IntelliColor Display/20 and the name of the company is "radius".recived Well, twin view is working but the only maximum resolution is 1024*768. I'm using nividas x server program.   According to Microsoft, "Never update your software on a public Internet connection." So I have some questions. 1. What if a public Wi-Fi hotspot is the only Internet available, ever? Never update anything? 2. What happens if Windows or some other program is set to update automatically and attempts to do so while you are using a public Wi-Fi? Disable all automatic updates on all software? 3. Will VPN help to secure software updates? If so, how to go about it? Thanks.

• PHP I am pulling my hair out trying to find the best! [closed]

  PULLING MY HAIR OUT I have heard of Martin Fowler's book PoEAA and the other book Head First OOA OOD but those are not in PHP. I DESPERATELY WANT TO READ THEM, but ONLY in PHP utilizing SOLID principles! Does anyone know of the absolute best, most recent PHP book that utilizes the SOLID principles and GRASP, and all the other best practices? I want to learn from the best possible source! Not beginner books! I already understand OOP. This seems like an almost impossible question to find the answer to and so I thought, hey, might as well post on stackexchange!! Surely someone out there must know!!!!!!!!!! Or if noone knows Maybe they know of an open source application that utilizes these principles that is relatively small that is not a framework. Something that I can go through every single class, and spend time understanding the insides and outs of how the program was developed. Thanks so much in advance! • How to cleanup tmp folder safely on Linux

  I use RAM for my tmpfs /tmp, 2GB, to be exact. Normally, this is enough but sometimes, processes create files in there and fail to cleanup after themselves. This can happen if they crash. I need to delete these orphaned tmp files or else future process will run out of space on /tmp. How can I safely garbage collect /tmp? Some people do it by checking last modification timestamp, but this approach is unsafe because there can be long-running processes that still need those files. A safer approach is to combine the last modification timestamp condition with the condition that no process has a file handle for the file. Is there a program/script/etc that embodies this approach or some other approach that is also safe? Incidentally, does Linux/Unix allow a mode of file opening with creation wherein the created file is deleted when the creating process terminates, even if it's from a crash?

• Easy way to reload multiple applications under a single IIS Website after AppPool Recycle?

  I'm not sure where to begin or even if my thinking is in the right direction. Hopefully someone here can tell me what to do or at least give me a direction to start travelling. I work on a Intranet Website, that contains multiple MVC3 and Coldfusion Applications. I have set the AppPool to Recycle every morning at 2:00 AM. Now, I would like to create a Scheduled Task to reload every application contained under that IIS Website so that when the first user comes in in the morning, they don't have to wait 30 seconds to 2minutes for their application to be reloaded into the IIS AppPool. Is there an easy to to do this? As I see it my only options are: Writing a bash script, inserting each website manually to load Writing a program that would try to find every application and load them Now, if there those are my only options, is there possibly a .NET Library I can tap into that would allow me to easily find the MVC3 Applications under IIS?

• VPN pre-shared key problems

  I have two vpns set up on a Symantec Gateway Security 320. VPN 1 goes to a Symantec Firewall/VPN 100 to another clinic of ours and every hour they lose connectivity and the error log on the Firewall/VPN100 shows an invalid pre-shared key error, although, both devices show the same pre-shared key entered. VPN 2 goes to our software vendor to use an additional part of our program. I am unable to ping the remote address and so is the other company, but my VPN status shows it is connected. They have told me the pre-shared key seemed to be automatically trying to resubmit itself as if it were incorrect, about every hour even though it is correct. They also told me port80 traffic was closed but I show the HTTP service using 80 redirected to 80 in my firewall settings. Please help.

• Partition tool with console UI (as in server installation)?

  Back in 2006, Ray (3DLover) posted the same question in: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=309680 but none of the answers were really useful. Now with a little help from AskUbuntu community, I would like to repeat his question again to see if this time it can be answered correctly. So this is the question (and what I wish too): I'm looking for a UI tool for managing partitions in a console. I have installed Ubuntu Server, so I don't have X Windows at all. fdisk and sfdisk are entirely command line. parted is slightly better, but it's not really a UI. cfdisk has somewhat of a UI, but it only works on one disk at a time, and there's no advanced options like configuring LVM or RAID. Just partitioning. I love the partition tool that is available during the OS install procedure. You can partition, configure RAID's and LMV sets. It can format the partitions with several different file systems, it can set labels, mount options and it can insert your volumes into your fstab. Is this tool available as a stand-alone program? I can't find it anywhere. I think it's called parted_server, but I can't find much information about where to get it. In the past, I have run the Ubuntu install procedure just to use the partition manager that comes with it. (canceling the install after making my partition edits) Anyone help me on this? • How to activate Windows 8 Pro license with Releae Preview installed?

  So I'm one of the many who downloaded the Release Preview (64-bit). I now got the ISO to install Windows 8 Professional (64-bit) and a product key (note: I didn't get these from either Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant or Microsoft's web Store), everything legal. However, the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant only gives me the option to Store my personal files which means that I'll have to say goodbye to both my Program Files and their respective configurations. I just want to input the Product Key and activate the license, why isn't this possible? Even "Add Features to Windows 8" doesn't accept the key. Do I really need to backup all of my stuff and make a clean install?

• Day in the Life of Agile - The Forge Michigan November 27, 2012

  Went to training at The Forge yesterday and did a Day in the life of Agile with Pillar.  It was pretty good. Check them out at: http://pillartechnology.com/ Abstract: A single-day agile project simulation that is engaging, educational, provocative, and fun. This simulation introduces concepts like time-boxed iterations, User Stories, collective estimation, commitment to a product owner for iteration scope, formal verification ritual at iteration conclusion, tracking velocity, and making results big and visible through charts. The exercise is designed to simulate not only how agile teams and practices work, but the inevitable challenges that arise as teams attempt to adopt such practices. One of the best parts of this training was getting some hands on experience with agile.  We used a program called Scratch to create an arcade video game.  Our team chose Frogger.  We had 3 iterations at 20 minutes each.  I think we did pretty good but in the panic of trying to get a bunch done in only 20 minutes made it interesting. • Drobo Pro or SAN for backups

  I have multiple offices and was thinking of using two Drobo Pros as a storage location for my backups, with one at each site being synced. It seems like on the surface its a cheap alternative to a SAN. Because it will just be used for storing backups I don't think that performance is as big of an issue. Related question. How do you sync your backups from your main location to a remote site. I am using Backup Exec and wondered if I should use a feature in the program or use something like Delta Copy.

  The JCP Program will be hosting a Spec Lead call on 20 December on the topic of developing a Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK).  A Technology Compatibility Kit is a required output of a JSR at Final Release, along with the Specification and Reference Implementation (RI).   The TCK must test all aspects of a specification that impact how compatible an implementation of that specification would be, such as the public API and all mandatory elements of the specification. The Reference Implementation is required to pass the TCK. A vendor's implementation of a specification is only considered compatible if the implementation passes the TCK fully and completely.  The TCK is used to test implementations of the Final Specification to make sure that they are fully compatible. • How to quickly start Programs like "regedit.exe" from the Windows 7 search bar using substring matching?

  The search bar in Windows 7 is very convenient to quickly start applications by pressing the Win-key and then entering the name of the application. For applications with a Program Menu entry like Firefox, it is sufficient to type Fire and Firefox will be displayed in the Programs section of the search results. For other applications like regedit.exe, I have to type the full command regedit before the correct choice regedit.exe appears. Is there any way to have regedit.exe appear already when I have just entered a substring? Please note: I have seen Add my applications to Vista’s Start Search, but I don't want to add anything to the Start Menu manually. This question is about if there is some configuration that can be tuned to make the results appear. I have also seen Search behavior of Windows 7 start menu, but my problem is not that the exe appears under Files, regedit.exe correctly appears under Programs, but it should appear already for a substring match.

• Why is my Windows XP not allowing me to turn on sounds?

  This started to happen few weeks ago: Every time I start up Windows, the global sound volume is set to muted. I was able to just click the muted button to un-muted and that was fine, until now: Now I cant even click that unmute button! Every time I click the unmute button, I hear a split of a second the music I play, then it stops immediately. It is maybe 10 milliseconds until it mutes it again. In theory I could write a program to click that button continuously, but is there another solution to fix this? Or is this a broken hardware problem and Windows knows it and therefore doesn't allow me to enable sounds or my computer would break apart? Any ideas what could be causing this? A weird virus that's purpose is to piss me off? That weird this whole issue is, really, doesn't make any sense at all.

• How to find all photos taken in April - any April?

  I have 100+ gB of photos going back 25 years. They are arranged in a directory tree by category, with nested sub-directories. How can I make a search for all photos taken in a given month, say April, in any of those directories? I don't think that a Windows search will work as that will probably be the file creation data, which could be a month or two later wen I finally more the files from SD card to PC. Perhaps searching the EXIF data? Is there a free program which can do that?
