• Why collection literals ?

  Hi fellow Java programmers. From the various online articles on Java 7 I have come to know that Java 7 will be having collection literals like the following: List<String> fruits = [ "Apple", "Mango", "Guava" ]; Set<String> flowers = { "Rose", "Daisy", "Chrysanthemum" }; Map<Integer, String> hindiNums = { 1 : "Ek", 2 : "Do", 3 : "Teen" }; My questions are: 1] Wouldn't it have been possible to provide a static method of in all of the collection classes which could be used as follows: List<String> fruits = ArrayList.of("Apple", "Mango", "Guava"); IMO this looks as good as the literal version and is also reasonably concise. Why then did they have to invent a new syntax? 2] When I say List<String> fruits = [ "Apple", "Mango", "Guava" ]; what List would I actually get? Would it be ArrayList or LinkedList or something else? Thanks.

• Help to understand the issue with protected method

  I'm reading Sybex Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide April 2005 (ISBN0782144195). This book is for java developers who wants to pass java certification. After a chapter about access modifiers (along with other modifiers) I found the following question (#17): True or false: If class Y extends class X, the two classes are in different packages, and class X has a protected method called abby(), then any instance of Y may call the abby() method of any other instance of Y. This question confused me a little. As far as I know you can call protected method on any variable of the same class (or subclasses). You cannot call it on variables, that higher in the hierarchy than you (e.g. interfaces that you implement). For example, you cannot clone any object just because you inherit it. But the questions says nothing about variable type, only about instance type. I was confused a little and answered "true". The answer in the book is False. An object that inherits a protected method from a superclass in a different package may call that method on itself but not on other instances of the same class. There is nothing here about variable type, only about instance type. This is very strange, I do not understand it. Can anybody explain what is going on here?

• Where to put external archives to configure running in Eclipse?

  As a Java/Eclipse noob coming from a Visual Studio .NET background, I'm trying to understand how to set up my run/debug environment in the Eclipse IDE so I can start stepping through code. I have built my application with separate src and bin hierarchies for each library project, and each project has its own jar. For example, in a Windows environment, I have something like: c:\myapp\myapp_main\src\com\mycorp\myapp\main ...and a parallel "bin" tree like this: c:\myapp\myapp_main\bin\com\mycorp\myapp\main Other supporting projects are, similarly: **c:\myapp\myapp_util\src\com\mycorp\myapp\uti**l (and a parallel "bin" tree.) ... etc. So, I end up with, e.g., myapp_util.jar in the ...\myapp_util\bin... path and then add that as an external archive to my myapp_main project. I also use utilities like gluegen-rt.jar, which I add ad external dependencies to the projects requiring them. I have been able to run outside of the Eclipse environment, by copying all my project jars, gluegen-rt DLL, etc., into a "lib" subfolder of some directory and executing something like: java -Djava.library.path=lib -DfullScreen=false -cp lib/gluegen-rt.jar;lib/myapp_main.jar;lib/myapp_util.jar; com.mycorp.myapp.Main When I first pressed F11 to debug, however, I got a message about something like /com/sun/../glugen... not being found by the class loader. So, to debug, or even just run, in Ecplipse, I tried setting up my VM arguments in the Galileo Debug - (Run/Debug) Configurations to be the command line above, beginning at "-Djava.libary.path...". I've put a lib subdirectory - just like the above with all jars and the native gluegen DLL - in various places, such as beneath the folder that my main jar is built in and as a subfolder of my Ecplipse starting workspace folder, but now Eclipse can't find the main class: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.mycorp.myapp.Main Although the Classpath says that it is using the "default classpath", whatever that is. Bottom line, how do I assemble the constituent files of a multi-project application so that I can run or debug in Ecplipse?

• DateTime Property not firing PropertyChanged event when changed

  I'm working on a WPF MVVM application and I've got a TextBox on my view that is bound to a DateTime property on the ViewModel. Seems simple enough, but when I clear the text in the TextBox, the property never changes. In fact, it never even fires until I begin typing "4/1..." and then it fires. What can I do to fix this? Obviously I could bind the TextBox to a string property and then update the real property in the setter, but that's a bit of a hack. There's got to be a better way... • Eclipse plugin installation/update issues

  I've installed the following Team repository plugins (along with it's dependencies) for Eclipse Helios (using Eclipse updater). MercurialEclipse 1.7.1 Subclipse 1.6.17 Subversive SVN All of these are the latest in Eclipse Marketplace. My problem is when I go to Eclipse "Preferences", under "Team" I only see CVS but under Eclipse Marketplace, I can see that these plugins are installed (it gives me an option to uninstall it). How do I configure my Team repositories to reflect under "Team" in Preferences? Also, there is an update for "Eclipse IDE for Java EE developers, but when I try to update it, the following error occurs: Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. • Setting database-agnostic default column timestamp using Hibernate

  I'm working on a java project full of Hibernate (3.3.1) mapping files that have the following sort of declaration for most domain objects. <property name="dateCreated" generated="insert"> <column name="date_created" default="getdate()" /> </property> The problem here is that getdate() is an MSSQL specific function, and when I'm using something like H2 to test subsections of the project, H2 screams that getdate() isn't a recognized function. It's own timestamping function is current_timestamp(). I'd like to be able to keep working with H2 for testing, and wanted to know whether there was a way of telling Hibernate "use this database's own mechanism for retrieving the current timestamp". With H2, I've come up with the following solution. CREATE ALIAS getdate AS $$ java.util.Date now() { return new java.util.Date(); } $$; CALL getdate(); It works, but is obviously H2 specific. I've tried extending H2Dialect and registering the function getdate(), but that doesn't seem to be invoked when Hibernate is creating tables. Is it possible to abstract the idea of a default timestamp away from the specific database engine?

• Find all substrings of a string - StringIndexOutOfBoundsException

  I created class Word. Word has a constructor that takes a string argument and one method getSubstrings which returns a String containing all substring of word, sorted by length. For example, if the user provides the input "rum", the method returns a string that will print like this: r u m ru um rum I want to concatenate the substrings in a String, separating them with a newline ("\n"). Then return the string. Code: public class Word { String word; public Word(String word) { this.word = word; } /** * Gets all the substrings of this Word. * @return all substrings of this Word separated by newline */ public String getSubstrings() { String str = ""; int i, j; for (i = 0; i < word.length(); i++) { for (j = 0; j < word.length(); j++) { str = word.substring(i, i + j); str += "\n"; } } return str; } But it throws exception: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: -1 at java.lang.String.substring(String.java:1911) I stuck at this point. Maybe, you have other suggestions according this method signature public String getSubstrings(). How to solve this issue?

• JVM terminates when launching eclipse with J2SE 6.0 on mac os x (need J2SE 6.0 for Oracle enterprise

  I know my issue has party been addressed at this link http://stackoverflow.com/questions/245803/jvm-terminates-when-launching-eclipse-mat-on-mac-os-with-j2se-60 but it was a year+ ago.. plus the link that's provided in there http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/ does not seem to be alive (i mean the download section on that link no longer provide the 32-bit port of j2se 6.0 for mac osx 10.5) I am trying to run eclipse 3.5 on mac OSX 10.5. It works fine with J2SE 5.0. But when I installed the Oracle enterprise pack for eclipse - it requires to start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM otherwise it will get disabled. Here's the exact message I get from it - "You are running Eclipse on Java VM version: 1.5.0_22 Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse requires Java version 6 or higher. Click next to configure a compatible Java VM." It asks me to point to J2SE 6.0 JVM, when I do that (i.e point it to "/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home") , it asks to restart eclipse , when I do that, eclipse just bombs .. with JVM terminated error .. SO I need to start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM but eclipse needs carbon which is only available in 32 bits and hence I cann't start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM which is only available in 64bit mode from mac. And the site providing 32 bit port of J2SE 6.0 JVM does not seem to be active anymore.. Can someone help me on this issue, Thanks in advance,

• Add jar to EAR in Eclipse

  I have several projects in an EAR in Eclipse. These projects themselves have dependency jar's on the build path marked as "do not export, do not contribute to others". Now in Eclipse I add jar's to the EAR via the EAR properties "Java EE Module Dependencies". I browse to the jar (add jar) and click ok. The jar is added to the list. When I click apply, the added jar is gone from the list, it cannot be found in other properties, it is contained in the hidden folder .settings in the file org.eclipse.wst.common.component. This behaviour does not make much sense to me, what am I missing?

• Implementing a Property Inspector/Editor in WPF

  So far my plan is to have an event "Item selected" which the property inspector listens to. The actual property inspector is just a ContentControl. When the object is selected the content property is set and the appropriate DataTemplate for editing the object is loaded. In general I am trying to do this "MVVM" style. I guess you could use reflection instead of templating but I only have a handful of types so far. Has anyone implemented something similar? Can you offer any advice or source code?

• How to run an app in Tomcat?

  Hi! I have put my project in tomcat_home/webapps/ directory. The structure is : project_name/WEB-INF/classes. in WEB-INF i have put my web.xml descriptor. The problem is that when i try to run the application, it doesn't find the files. The error is: The requested resource () is not available. But I don't see a way to do this for the setter and getter of a C# property, because neither of them provides this collection where you add the attributes. Does anyone have a clue?

• Iterator performance contract (and use on non-collections)

  If all that you're doing is a simple one-pass iteration (i.e. only hasNext() and next(), no remove()), are you guaranteed linear time performance and/or amortized constant cost per operation? Is this specified in the Iterator contract anywhere? Are there data structures/Java Collection which cannot be iterated in linear time? java.util.Scanner implements Iterator<String>. A Scanner is hardly a data structure (e.g. remove() makes absolutely no sense). Is this considered a design blunder? Is something like PrimeGenerator implements Iterator<Integer> considered bad design, or is this exactly what Iterator is for? (hasNext() always returns true, next() computes the next number on demand, remove() makes no sense). Similarly, would it have made sense for java.util.Random implements Iterator<Double>? Should a type really implement Iterator if it's effectively only using one-third of its API? (i.e. no remove(), always hasNext())

• DependencyProperty binding not happening on initial load

However, the getter doesn't appear to fire when I start up the app. (I'm guessing the solution will make me smack my head and go "Doh!", but still. :) ) Any ideas? • Web Start Application built on NetBeans Platform doesn't create desktop shortcut & start menu item

  I've created a NetBeans Platform application that is launched using Java Web Start. I built the WAR file using the 'Build JNLP Application'-command in Netbeans. I've added a desktop shortcut and menu item to the JNLP file, but for some reason, these are not created when the application is launched. However, when I go to: Control Panel - Java - Temporary Internet Files - View - Select my application Click 'Install shortcuts to the selected application' the desktop and menu shortcuts are created correctly. Also, in the Java Console, the Shortcut Creation option is set to the following (the default, I presume): Prompt user if hinted Below is a snippet of my JNLP file: <jnlp spec="6.0+" codebase="$$codebase"> <information> <title>${app.title}</title> <vendor>SomeVendor (Pty) Ltd</vendor> <description>Some description</description> <icon href="${app.icon}"/> <shortcut online="true"> <desktop/> <menu submenu="MyApp"/> </shortcut> </information> ... • Control Oracle Forms with outside program

  I work at a company that uses the Forms based Oracle 11i. A lot of employees complain of the redundancy of data entry and I want to write a program that will ease some of that pain since all attempts to ask IT to do it have failed. The problem is, since Oracle Forms are Java based there are no "controls" as there would be on say a windows application or an HTML based form. Does anyone know of a way to tell the PC to (example only) click edit field 3 on the RMA creation form and then enter the data? The only way I can programmatically navigate Oracle is with hotkeys and it's very unreliable. I'm not concerned about the language or learning a new application to resolve this issue. I currently know (elementary to Intermediate levels) Java, VB.NET and will be taking C++ in school. Is there a tool, bridge, element spy of some sort that will allow me to send commands to elements on the forms? edit APC sez: Oracle Forms over the web run as a Java applet. I mention this because it may be relevant to your responses.

• How do I lookup a JNDI Datasource from outside a web container?

  I have the following environment set up: Java 1.5 Sun Application Server 8.2 Oracle 10 XE Struts 2 Hibernate I'm interested to know how I can write code for a Java client (i.e. outside of a web application) that can reference the JNDI datasource provided by the application server. The ports for the Sun Application Server are all at their defaults. There is a JNDI datasource named jdbc/xxxx in the server configuration, but I noticed that the Hibernate configuration for the web application uses the name java:comp/env/jdbc/xxxx instead. Most of the examples I've seen so far involve code like Context ctx = new InitialContext(); ctx.lookup("jdbc/xxxx"); But it seems I'm either using the wrong JNDI name, or I need to configure a jndi.properties or other configuration file to correctly point to a listener? I have appserv-rt.jar from the Sun Application Server which has a jndi.properties inside of it, but it does not seem to help. Also when I try to deploy it for tomcat 6.0 I get following warnings: WARN net.sourceforge.stripes.util.ResolverUtil - Could not examine class 'stripesbook/ext/ContactFormatter.class' due to a java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError with message: Bad version number in .class file (unable to load class stripesbook.ext.ContactFormatter) I have checked to be sure that I am compiling with Java 5(set JDK compiler to 1.5) instead of 1.6 (Java 6); but didn't work out for me and still have problems running spring-stripes integrated project.

• ClassCastException When Calling an EJB Remotely that Exists on Same Server

  I have 2 ejbs. Ejb-A that calls Ejb-B. They are not in the same Ear. For portability Ejb-B may or may not exist on the same server. (There is an external property file that has the provider URLs of Ejb-B. I have no control over this.) Example Code: in Ejb-A EjbBDelegate delegateB = EjbBDelegateHelper.getRemoteDelegate(); // lookup from list of URLs from props... BookOfMagic bom = delegateB.getSomethingInteresting(); Use Cases/Outcomes: When Ejb-B DOES NOT EXIST on the same server as Ejb-A, everything works correctly. (it round-robbins through the URLs) When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A happens to call Ejb-B on the same server, everything works correctly. When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A calls Ejb-B on a different server, I get: javax.ejb.EJBException: nested exception is: java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 I'm using Weblogic 10.0, Java 5, EJB3 Basically, if Ejb-B Exists on the server, it must be called ONLY on that server. Which leads me to believe that the class is getting loaded by a local classloader (on deployment?), then when called remotely, a different classloader is loading it. (causing the Exception) But it should work, as it should be Serialized into the destination classloader... What am I doing wrong?? Also, when reproducing this locally, Ejb-A would favor the Ejb-B on the same server, so it was difficult to reproduce. But this wasn't the case on other machines. NOTE: This all worked correctly for EJB2

Do you know a way to get rid of parent update changing child? The update results both in inefficiency and false positive for optimistic lock. Note, that both child and parent save their state in DB correctly. Hibernate version is 3.5.1-Final
