  • Is Ruby on Rails suitable for a non-web application?

    - by Bruce
I am interested in developing a workstation-based application that communicates with a proprietary data server and that presents information from that server to the user. I am not intending the user interface to be browser-based, and have been considering Qt as my framework. Should I consider RoR for this? Thanks.

  • Translating a C# WCF app into Visual Basic

    - by MikeG
I'm trying to write a simple/small Windows Communication Foundation service application in Visual Basic (but I am very novice in VB) and all the good examples I've found on the net are written in C#. So far I've gotten my WCF service application working but now I'm trying to add callback functionality and the program has gotten more complicated. In the C# example code I understand how everything works but I am having trouble translating into VB the portion of code that uses a delegate. Can someone please show the VB equivalent? Here is the C# code sample I'm using for reference: namespace WCFCallbacks { using System; using System.ServiceModel; [ServiceContract(CallbackContract = typeof(IMessageCallback))] public interface IMessage { [OperationContract] void AddMessage(string message); [OperationContract] bool Subscribe(); [OperationContract] bool Unsubscribe(); } interface IMessageCallback { [OperationContract(IsOneWay = true)] void OnMessageAdded(string message, DateTime timestamp); } } namespace WCFCallbacks { using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ServiceModel; public class MessageService : IMessage { private static readonly List<IMessageCallback> subscribers = new List<IMessageCallback>(); //The code in this AddMessage method is what I'd like to see re-written in VB... public void AddMessage(string message) { subscribers.ForEach(delegate(IMessageCallback callback) { if (((ICommunicationObject)callback).State == CommunicationState.Opened) { callback.OnMessageAdded(message, DateTime. Now); } else { subscribers.Remove(callback); } }); } public bool Subscribe() { try { IMessageCallback callback = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IMessageCallback>(); if (!subscribers.Contains(callback)) subscribers.Add(callback); return true; } catch { return false; } } public bool Unsubscribe() { try { IMessageCallback callback = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IMessageCallback>(); if (!subscribers.Contains(callback)) subscribers.Remove(callback); return true; } catch { return false; } } } } I was thinking I could do something like this but I don't know how to pass the message string from AddMessage to DoSomething... Dim subscribers As New List(Of IMessageCallback) Public Sub AddMessage(ByVal message As String) Implements IMessage.AddMessage Dim action As Action(Of IMessageCallback) action = AddressOf DoSomething subscribers.ForEach(action) 'Or this instead of the above three lines: 'subscribers.ForEach(AddressOf DoSomething) End Sub Public Sub DoSomething(ByVal callback As IMessageCallback) 'I am also confused by: '((ICommunicationObject)callback).State 'Is that casting the callback object as type ICommunicationObject? 'How is that done in VB? End Sub

    I'm looking for the sintax of the getter/setter. Which is the setter and which is the getter?? Is the readwrite attribute the getter? Is the assign the setter? @interface SomeClass : NSObject { NSString *str; NSDate *date; } @property (readwrite, assign) NSString *str; @property (readwrite, assign) NSDate *date;

  • Copy values from one object to another.

    - by BrokeMyLegBiking
Anyone have a suggestion for a good utility class that maps values from one object to another? I want a utility class that uses reflection and takes two objects and copies values from the 1st object to the second if there is a public property with the same name. I have two entities that are generated from a web service proxy, so I can't change the parent class or impliment an interface or anything like that. But I know that the two objects have the same public properties.

  • How to implement a simple auto-complete functionality?

    - by Kaarel
I'd like to implement a simple class (in Java) that would allow me to register and deregister strings, and on the basis of the current set of strings auto-complete a given string. So, the interface would be: void add(String) void remove(String) String complete(String) What's the best way to do this in terms of algorithms and data-structures?

  • Persisting and applying Linq Query to collection

    - by MattiasK
I have a scenario where I would want a plugin to construct a LINQ (to objects) query, send it across an appdomain and then apply and run it against a collection of my choosing Is it possible, how? If not, perhaps I could send a whole method (interface) across the appdomain and run it against the data on the appside? The main thing is that I want the data to reside in the CurrentDomain and the logic for operating on it in the plugin so I don't have to send the data across the boundary...

  • .net - invoke methods from classes from a certain namespace via reflection

    - by Kristian Hildebrandt
SPL and PHP allows you to create objects on the fly from classes, that fulfill certain conditions, such as implementing certain interfaces and stuff like that. However, I would like to do something similar in c# and automatically create objects from all classes in a namespace and invoke a particular method from those classes that implement a certain interface. My experience developing desktop apps is very limited. I am not quite sure if I should use delegates to archive this or if reflection is really the way to go.

  • IPhone iOs 5, need help getting my tab bar at the top to work

    - by Patrick
I wanted to have the tab bar at the top. So i created a new project in XCode. Added a view and then inside that view i added (scrollbar, text and another view). See picture. What i wanted was to have my tab bar at the top. Then in the middle would be the contents from the tab bar and below it a small copyright text. See picture. No idea how to make this correctly. I have tried to create the UITabBarController on the fly and then assign it into the view at the top. (Top white space on the picture dedicated for the tab bar). Here is my code to init the MainWindow. MainWindow.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @class Intro; @interface MainWindow : UIViewController @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIScrollView *mainContentFrame; @property (strong, nonatomic) IBOutlet UIView *mainTabBarView; @property (strong, nonatomic) UITabBarController *mainTabBar; @property (nonatomic, strong) Intro *intro; // Trying to get this tab to show in the tab bar @end MainWindow.m #import "MainWindow.h" #import "Intro.h" @interface MainWindow () @end @implementation MainWindow @synthesize mainContentFrame = _mainContentFrame; @synthesize mainTabBarView = _mainTabBarView; @synthesize mainTabBar = _mainTabBar; @synthesize intro = _intro; - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]; if (self) { // Custom initialization } return self; } - (void)viewDidLoad { _intro = [[Intro alloc] init]; NSArray *allViews = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:_intro, nil]; [super viewDidLoad]; // Do any additional setup after loading the view. _mainTabBar = [[UITabBarController alloc] init]; [_mainTabBar setViewControllers:allViews]; [_mainTabBarView.window addSubview:_mainTabBar.tabBarController.view]; } - (void)viewDidUnload { [self setMainTabBar:nil]; [self setMainContentFrame:nil]; [self setMainContentFrame:nil]; [super viewDidUnload]; // Release any retained subviews of the main view. } - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait); } @end What am i missing to get this to work? Wanted the content to end up in the scrollview so that all tabs are scrollable.

  • Cocos2d score resetting is messing up (long post warning)

    - by Jhon Doe
The score is not resetting right at all,I am trying to make a high score counter where every time you passed previous high score it will update. However, right now it is resetting during the game. For example if I had high score of 2 during the game it will take 3 points just to put it up to 3 as high score instead of keep going up until it is game over. I have came to the conclusion that I need to reset it in gameoverlayer so it won't reset during game. I have been trying to to do this but no luck. hello world ./h #import "cocos2d.h" // HelloWorldLayer @interface HelloWorldLayer : CCLayer { int _score; int _oldScore; CCLabelTTF *_scoreLabel; } @property (nonatomic, assign) CCLabelTTF *scoreLabel; • Tomcat 6 is really UNSTABLE when redeploying web apps

    - by EugeneP
Do you know how to make it more stable, maybe properties to set, memory to allocate? It always hangs up when redeploying web apps, thru manager (wars), web interface or maven plugin. every second time it gives PermGenSpace, no memory errors etc. on my local machine 3gb ram. It looks like it should be manually set up to work in a stable way. How to fix such a problem?

  • Java: most efficient way to defensively copy an int[]?

    - by Jason S
I have an interface DataSeries with a method int[] getRawData(); For various reasons (primarily because I'm using this with MATLAB, and MATLAB handles int[] well) I need to return an array rather than a List. I don't want my implementing classes to return the int[] array because it is mutable. What is the most efficient way to copy an int[] array (sizes in the 1000-1000000 length range) ? Is it clone()?

  • Generation of abstract class with JCodeModel

    - by SadJokerBY
I'm trying to generate top-level abstract class with JCodeModel library, but I can't find any way to change class modifiers. It's possible for nested classes (JDefinedClass API provides methods that get modifiers as parameters). But for creation of top level classes I found only JCodeModel API methods that get fully qualified name with or without ClassType (class/interface/annotation/enum) as parameters. Does anybody can suggest me how to change modifiers of JDefinedClass to make it abstract?

  • Why doesn't the value in /proc/meminfo seem to map exactly to the system RAM?

    - by Eric Asberry
The values in /proc/meminfo for MemTotal don't make sense. As a human, eyeballing it, it seems to roughly correspond to the installed RAM, but for using it to display the installed RAM from an automated utility it appears to be inexact, and inconsistent. For a system with 1G of RAM, I would expect the MemTotal line to have a value of 1048576 - 1024*1024. But instead, I'm seeing 1029392. On another 4G box, I'm seeing 3870172, which is not a multiple of 1024, and it's not even close to 1029392*4. On an 8G box, I get 8128204, which again seems to have no correlation to the other values, nor is it a multiple of 1024. I'm trying to use this information to report the RAM on a status web page. My work-around is to just "round" it to the nearest 1G multiple, but I'd like to understand why these values seem inconsistent and don't match my expectations. Can somebody fill me in on what I'm missing here? EDIT: To expand on the accepted answer below.... The reference can be found here. Also of interest to me from that page, which explains the inconsistency, is this bit: meminfo: Provides information about distribution and utilization of memory. This varies by architecture and compile options. ...
