  According to XName's (not up-to-date) ChangeLog Thu Oct 19 2006 Yann Hirou ([email protected]) Adding SRV records - including modification of dns_records it appears to be possible to set a SRV record for one of your zones. However, I just can't find a way to do this in the UI. I've contacted Yann Hirou, but didn't receive any answer (he is either submerged by emails, or only responds to "paying supporters") It might be that the feature is available in the source code, but that the instance running on XName has not been updated (since 2006?) Has anyone using XName been able to set up such records? Otherwise I might be forced to switch to another free DNS service...

• Is it possible to run Modern UI Apps in Windows 7

  It seems like a basic question, but is there a way to run Windows 8 (Modern Apps) in Windows 7 (without a VM, that seems like cheating)? My hunch is that it would be possible with some sort of hack, as the code is written in the same .Net languages as many other programs. The only issue would be intercepting the finger to corner gestures, but I am not sure how much is there really (is it just a location, or a special win API call). Is there software that can do this, or options that need to be changed to make this work?

• Check integrity of Debian system after possible rootkit?

  Good day! I have a system that was possible rootkited (the IRC bot was installed and +ai attributes were set on /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, /bin, /sbin). The IRC bots were deleted and system was upgraded to 5.0.4 from 4.0. I'm afraid that something in folders I've mentioned was modified. I can't reinstall the box, so if there any way to check integrity of the system? P.S. I have already checked rkhunter and chrootkit. Thanks in advance!

• sound volume increase beyond 100% whenever possible on linux

  Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value. If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer) thank you Note: Asked the same thing on stackoverflow and they directed me here.

• Audigy 2 Coaxial to Coaxial/Optical connection possible?

  Hello, The original question is deleted, and asked again below with accurate information. Edit: Excuse me for my ignorance, my friend has a Logitech Z-5500 set. I thought after comparing those systems on Google images that he had the Z-680, but he hasn't. This set has a single Digital coaxial for DVD or CD players or PC sound cards (requires coaxial cable, sold separately) cable. This single cable was connected to the orange tulip connector (SPDIF coaxial out) on the backside of his onboard HP Elite m9070, this connector is broken. How can I use the digital out with a single cable coaxial cable on the Audigy2 (see image below) (I have the following converters for my disposal, can I use one of these? 3.5 mm male - coax optical mini optical male - toslink optical female 2 x toslink optical female, toslink coupler, optical audio extension note: Is it possible to connect a toslink cable with an mini optical male - toslink converter on the digital out of the Audigy 2? • Is it possible to create a delta VM?

  I have a VM of approx. 18GB. Sometimes I need temporally clones of it, so I clone it. The problems are: * It takes a while until it's done. * Sometimes I happen to need dozen of clones and I'm running out of storage. I wonder if there's a way to create a VM that saves only the delta (difference) since the delployment out of the source machine. That way each new VM's filesize should be 100MB at most, and creating it will be much faster. I've heard that VMWare View is using this concept. Is such a thing possible for ESXi as well? I'm using ESXi 4.1 with VSphere 4.1. Thanks!

  I am currently developing a mobile PHP project on localhost (or, to be more precise, a locally hosted website reachable at http://azgoth/) on my desktop computer and wish to check out how the design looks on my phone's various browsers, however, since the project's actually in my computer rather than the public net, I am unable to do so. Both my Desktop computer and smartphone connect to the internet via the same router, so I wondered, would it be possible to somehow make http://azgoth/ accessible to my smartphone in a similar way that my desktop computer accesses it, without making it public for everyone to see?   I understand that when windows caches user credentials, these can sometimes be used by malicious parties to access other machines once a machine containing cached credentials is compromised, a method known as "pass the hash"[1]. For this reason I would like to get control over what's cached to reduce the risk of cached credentials being used maliciously. It is possible to prevent all caching by zeroing HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CachedLogonsCount, but this is too indiscriminate: laptops users need to be able to login when away from the network. • Is Windows Server 2003 on 96 MB possible?

  I have an old laptop, a Pentium II with 96 MB. I have had Windows 2000 on it for ages, it was slow but usable. But now I have to upgrade since I can't get my USB-wlan drivers to install (the old PCMCIA network card broke). I would prefer to install Windows XP but I have no spare licence, but I do have a Windows Server 2003 licence. Do you think it's possible (and usable) to squeeze in 2003 on this computer? Edit: Unfortunately 2003 simply refuses to install on the laptop. It hangs with an error message (paraphrased) 2003 has detected a problem with your computer and has halted the installation to prevent damage. And then some error codes This happens very early in the installation while it's copying the installation files just after I accepted the licence. So I give up for now.

• Running telnet standalone - possible?

  So, this is what I want to do: there is a local non-superuser and it can upload the file into /tmp. Using this account, I download a telnet server package equivalent to what is already installed. I modify some settings, setting all file directories into /tmp. Then compile and run as a standalone telnet server. Is this possible? If not, what makes this impossible? Or as a non-privileged user, would there be any way to enable telnet?

• Has ec2 made self-hosting possible for 'amateur' sysadmins possible?

  I'm a developer, and it seems ec2 has made it possible for a amateur sysadmin like me to setup and maintain a fairly large set of servers. Now I don't mean to undermine real sys admins, as I know the value of them but what I am trying to get at is that someone like me can setup and maintain a cluster of servers (front end web servers, with some db servers) using tools like ec2 and capistrano with the help of google. Now this isn't something I would do as a long term thing, but as a startup, one-man operation, I think I can pull this off until business takes off and I can hire this important role out. With ec2, I get my firewall, so I basically open up port 80 on my public facing server, which will run haproxy and route requests to my cluster of servers. Ofcourse I am simplifying the setup, but just want a feel for what you guys think about my perception. My application is a web application, that will be runing Ruby on rails (passenger) and talking to mysql or postgresql.

  Hi folks, Sorry for the newbie question--this is not my area of expertise by a long shot. I work at a small development shop and we finally got around to doing code reviews. (Yay!) I set up an instance of Review Board -- an open-source code review tool -- on one of our local servers but it doesn't seem to like talking to our hosted Exchange server to send notification emails. I decided to just install Postfix on that same box and send mail from localhost, which is working much more reliably, but Outlook disables all links in the email announcements and marks it as possible phishing. What is making these emails look suspicious and what can I change? Would the best thing be to figure out how to relay to Exchange from Postfix? Thanks!

• Is it possible to use bittorrent for a fileserver

  I would like to set up a file server that is searchable, preferable via the web. I'm wondering if it would be possible to achieve this using the bittorrent protocol and have a single client sharing every single torrent on the server. I guess I could use some available tracker solution for the webinterface or write one myself. My concerns are the if there are any limits to the number of torrents a single client can share since this may potentially be 10k torrents. The number of downloading clients is very small, only myself and my relatives. The idea is to have a single place to host everything from vacation photos to musical creations. Is there any other options for this kind of file server. It should also be easy to upload files to the server.

• Outbound Traffic Logging on ASA 5520 possible?

  Taking a look at the ASDM (6.4) for my ASA 5520, I get a nice summary of the traffic status, with items like "interface traffic usage", and "connections per second". This works well, but only shows the data for the last 5-6 minutes or so. Recently, I've been asked whether it's possible to pull up this same type of traffic data for a particular time in the past. (Such as: Find the traffic usage for a 3 minute period from date xx:xx:xx @ time xx:xx:xx) I've noticed that my ASA 5520 is logging the warning, errors, etc that it is processing. But traffic data is not logged (yet) according to my search through the ASA. Is logging the traffic data amounts (as wondered above) actually a possibility? Is there any way to find out the past data for traffic and such values? Thanks!

  I have the following setup: a) a single-homed machine, A, that can see the Internet. b) other machines B, C, and D that cannot see the Internet. c) A, B, C, and D can see each other. d) all machines are running either RHEL 5.3 or Fedora 16. Question: Is it possible to have B, C, and D share the Internet connection with A somehow? Note, again, that machine A does not have a second NIC installed. (The solutions that I am finding on the Net assume A to be a dual-homed system!) Also, could you please recommend a set of book(s) or online resources for a current and in-depth coverage of iptables for people with only a basic knowledge of TCP/IP?

  Is it possible to set timeout directives within a location block to prevent nginx returning a 504 from a long running PHP script (PHP-FPM? location /myurlsegment/ { client_body_timeout 1000000; send_timeout 1000000; fastcgi_read_timeout 1000000; } This has no effect when making a request to example.com/myurlsegment. The timeout occurs after approximately 60 seconds. PHP is configured to allow the script to run until completion (set_time_limit(0)) I don't want to set a global timeout for all scripts.

• Possible to change the order of the shortcut locations in windows explorer

  When you open a new explorer window by default it loads from the starting position "Computer" which shows your drives, etc. This is all well and good except when explorer loads it bumps the scroll bar down so that half the favorites are cut off. I can scroll up to get to the ones I want but that gets really old doing that 50 times a day. I do clean out my favorites frequently but more are added all the time and used. In trying to come up with a fix for this problem I thought maybe it would be possible to move the link to "Computer" to be at the very top and the "Favorites" area directly under that but I can't figure out a way to do that. Anyone have an idea? Or maybe another solution I haven't thought of?

• Xen VGA passthrough: is it possible to have dual GPU's with single monitor

  I hate dual-booting between Windows when I want to play a game and Linux when I need to work. I don't fancy running Linux in a VM and Wine almost never works for me. So, I'm thinking about buying a new mainboard and CPU that is compatible with Xen's VGA passthrough and HVM virtualization. I want to be able to switch between the Linux Dom0 and Windows DomU with ease, but the problem is I need two GPU's and have only one monitor. Right now I have a nVidia GTX 260 in my PC, but I also have a Radeon 4850 sitting in my closet that I was going to sell. My question is, can I salvage the Radeon card to run the Dom0 and have the nVidia card run the DomU while having some kind of device/software to connect them a single monitor? Power supply and airflow issues aside. If not, what would you suggest? Is this even possible?

  I have just uploaded tar.gz archive to my Centos server from my home Windows 7 computer. Before that, it was extracted from .zip archive. When I try to extract it: tar -xvf file.tar.gz gunzip file.tar.gz It always give me error: "not in gzip format" The archive is not corrupted, because it is possible to extract it in Windows with Winrar. The archive is quite big, more than 100 MB. I don't know, what's the problem. Could you help me please? Thanks. Peter

• Is it possible to group chrome extension processes?

  I have a problem with Chrome - most extensions, even those which consume merely 5-10 MB of memory, each have their own process, and because of that Chrome uses a single process for all the tabs, which consume a lot more memory compared to extensions, even with --proccess-per-tab switch. This behavior seemes illogical - why do you need extensions in separate processes if you can't use your browser properly when it takes 5-10 seconds just to load a tab and freezes constantly? Is it possible somehow to limit the number of processes which can be used for extensions, maybe group them to 10 extensions per 1 process?

• Actionscript/Flex - Is it possible to dynamically extend an object, modify functions, add functions

  I know this question might be frowned upon, but actionscript is a dynamic language similar to javascript and in javascript I can take an object from a library written by someone else and dynamically (at runtime) add/remove/modify functions, properties, prototypes etc. this is kind of like dynamically extending an object to make it work with the library it came with as well as another library. Is something like this possible in flex actionscript? I'm thinking it is only possible with classes that are declared 'dynamic' and definitely not possible with classes declared 'final'. What are your thoughts? Any ideas/tricks?

  Hi All, I've got a page in an ASP.Net app (its Mvc actually but not important) and I would like to only allow connections to this page from the local machine. I would love to do something like this in Web.config: <location path="resources"><system.web><authorization><allow ips="local"/></authorization></system.web></location> I know this is possible with a simple check in the page code behind (or controller) and its even possible just with IIS configuration but I would love a Web.config config as this would be the most elegant solution in my opinion.   I was wondering, what is the longest possible name length allowed by the Windows kernel? E.g.: I know the kernel uses UNICODE_STRING structures to hold all object paths, and since the byte length of a wide-character string is stored inside a USHORT, that allows for a maximum path length of 2^15 - 1 characters. Is there a similar, hard restriction on a file name (rather than path)? (I don't care if NTFS or FAT32 imposes a particular restriction; I'm looking for the longest possible theoretically allowed name in the kernel, assuming no additional file system or shell restrictions.) (Edit: For those wondering why this even matters, consider that normally, traversing a directory is achieved by FindFirstFile/FindNextFile calls, one call per file. Given the function named NtQueryDirectoryFile, which is the underlying system call and which returns multiple file names per call, it's actually possible to take advantage of this maximum-length restriction on the path to make an extremely-fast directory traverser that uses solely the stack as a buffer. Now I'm trying to extend that concept, and I need to know the maximum size of a file name.)

• Write the longest possible loop.

  Hello Group, Recently I was asked this question in a technical discussion. What is the longest possible loop that can be written in a programming language? This loop has to be as long as possible and yet not an infinite loop and should not end-up crashing the program (Recursion etc...) I honestly did not know how to attack this problem, so I asked him if is it practically possible. He said using some computer science concepts, you can arrive at a hypothetical number which may not be practical but nevertheless it will still not be infinite. Anyone here; knows how to analyse / attack this problem. P.S. Choosing some highest limit for a type that can store the highest numerical value is apparently not an answer. Thanks in advance,
