  Oracle has many formal, searchable locations:  Service Requests, BugIDs, Technical Documents. These contain the results of an investigation for a customer crash situation;  they're created after the intense work of resolution is over, and typically contain the "root cause" of the failure ... but not the methods for identifying that cause. Email is still the standby for interacting with quickly formed groups of specialists, focusing on a particular incident.Customer BI, Network and System specialists;  Oracle Tech Support, Development, Consultants; OEM Database, OS technical support.   It is a chaotic, time-oriented set of configuration, call stacks, changes, techniques to discover and repair the failure. I needed to organize that information into something cohesive to prepare the blog entry on Teradata.  My corporate email client of choice is Thunderbird.   My original (flawed) search technique: R-Click on Inbox in Thunderbird left pane, and choose Search Messages Subject:  [ teradata ] Results: A new window titled "Search Messages"Single pane of selected messagesColumn headings:  Subject  From  Date  LocationNo preview window for messages There are 673 email entries in the result ( too many )  R-click icon just above the vertical scroll bar on the rightCheck [x] Tags Click on the Tags header to sort by "Important" View contents of message by double-clickingOpens in the Thunderbird Main Window in a new Tab Not what I was looking for, close the tab and try again. There has to be a better way.  ( and there is ) I need to be more productive, eliminating duplicate-chained messages, for example.   Even the Tag "Important" that was added during the investigation phase, is "not so much" for my current task. In the "Search Messages" window, click [ Save as Search Folder ] [ teradata ]  Appears as a new folder in my Inbox. Focus on that folder and the results appear with a list of messages like every other folder in the Inbox.Only the results of the search are shown A preview window is now available for each message Sort, Select message, Cursor Down ... navigates quickly through the messages. But wait, there's more ... Click Find ( Ctrl-F) Enter a search term for the message body, like.[ LIBPATH ] The search is "sticky" ... each message you cycle through wil focus ( and highlight) the LIBPATH search term. And still more .... Reset the Tag"Important" message.   Press "1" and the tag is removed Press "4" and a new Tag "ToDo" is applied After applying all of the tags, sort by Tag for a new message order Adjust the search criteria ... R-click on the [ teradata ] search folder, and choose Properties Add additional criteria to narrow the search Some of the information I'm looking for did not contain "teradata" in the subject line. + Body  [ contains ] [ Best Practices ] That's it.  Much more efficient search.   Thank you Thunderbird.

• Why values in my WCF data contract were suddenly wrong...

  A WCF Service I provided took a very simple data contract as parameter (containing one string and one int...) and had a very simple task to do. A .NET 3.5 client was created using the VS2008 feature "Add Service Reference". Everything worked as expected. Then a slight change came in: The client was expected to run on machines with .NET 2.0 only. So we set the Target  Framework to .NET 2.0, removed the references to System.ServiceModel, System.Runtime.Serialization and the ServiceReference and created a new Reference to the Service using the old "Add Web Reference" . A matter of 2 minutes.  When testing, the int value in the data contract arriving at the WCF Service suddenly was 0, instead of 38 as we expected. What happened? When generating an old  Web Reference on a WCF data contract an additional boolean field for each value-type field is created called [Fieldname]Specified (e.g. AgeSpecified) which defaults to "false". WCF inspects these boolean fields to determine if a value was provided for the value-type field. If the "Specified"-field is "false", WCF translates that to using the default-value of the value-type field. For int this is 0. So we had to insert  setting the "Specified"-field  for the int-value to "true" and everything was fine again. That was what we forgot after setting the Framework-version to 2.0...

  Okay, some basic examples of overloading in F# Overloading Constructors Assume you have a F# object called person… type Person (firstname : string, lastname : string) = member v.Fullname = firstname + " " + lastname   This only has one constructor. To add additional constructors to the object by explicitly declaring them using the method member new. type Person (firstname : string, lastname : string) = new () = Person("Unknown", "Unknown") member v.Fullname = firstname + " " + lastname   In the code above I added another constructor to the Person object that takes no parameters and then refers to the primary constructor. Using the same technique in the code below I have created another constructor that accepts only the firstname as a parameter to create an object. type Person (firstname : string, lastname : string) = new () = Person("Unknown", "Unknown") new (firstname : string) = Person(firstname, "Unknown") member v.Fullname = firstname + " " + lastname   Overloading Operators So, you can overload operators of objects in F# as well… let’s look at example code… type Person(name : string) = member v.name = name static member (+) (person1 : Person , person2 : Person) = Person(person1.name + " " + person2.name)   In the code above we have overloaded the “+” operator. Whenever we add to Person objects together, it will now create a new object with the combined names…

When moving to the mobile platform all applications need to be able to provide different views.  Navigating around views in Windows Phone 7 is a very easy thing to do.  This post will introduce you to the simplest technique for navigation in Windows Phone 7 apps. Steps: 1.     Create a new Windows Phone Application project. 2.     In the MainPage.xaml file copy the following xaml into the ContentGrid Grid:             <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical" VerticalAlignment="Center"  >                 <TextBox Name="ValueTextBox" Width="200" ></TextBox>                 <Button Width="200" Height="30" Content="Next Page" Click="Button_Click"></Button>             </StackPanel> This gives a text box for the user to enter text and a button to navigate to the next page. 3.     Copy the following event handler code to the MainPage.xaml.cs file:         private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)         {             NavigationService.Navigate(new Uri( string.Format("/SecondPage.xaml?val={0}", ValueTextBox.Text), UriKind.Relative));         }   The event handler uses the NavigationService.Navigate() function.  This is what makes the navigation to another page happen.  The function takes a Uri parameter with the name of the page to navigate to and the indication that it is a relative Uri to the current page.  Note also the querystring is formatted with the value entered in the ValueTextBox control – in a similar manner to a standard web querystring. 4.     Add a new Windows Phone Portrait Page to the project named SecondPage.xaml. 5.     Paste the following XAML in the ContentGrid Grid in SecondPage.xaml:             <Button Name="GoBackButton" Width="200" Height="30" Content="Go Back" Click="Button_Click"></Button>   This provides a button to navigate back to the first page. 6.     Copy the following event handler code to the SecondPage.xaml.cs file:         private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)         {             NavigationService.GoBack();         } This tells the application to go back to the previously displayed page. 7.     Add the following code to the constructor in SecondPage.xaml.cs:             this.Loaded += new RoutedEventHandler(SecondPage_Loaded); 8.     Add the following loaded event handler to the SecondPage.xaml.cs file:         void SecondPage_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)         {             if (NavigationContext.QueryString["val"].Length > 0)                 MessageBox.Show(NavigationContext.QueryString["val"], "Data Passed", MessageBoxButton.OK);             else                 MessageBox.Show("{Empty}!", "Data Passed", MessageBoxButton.OK);         }   This code pops up a message box displaying either the text entered on the first page or the message “{Empty}!” if no text was entered. 9.     Run the application, enter some text in the text box and click on the next page button to see the application in action:   Congratulations!  You have created a new Windows Phone 7 application with page navigation.

• Change the Log Level of Node Manager.

  This is useful to troubleshoot issues related to Node Manager, such as problems starting a Managed Server or reasons a server could be (re)started. To change the Log Level of Node Manager, you need to edit the nodemanager.properties file. This is usually located at: <MIDDLEWARE_HOME>/wlserver_10.3/common/nodemanager What you need to modify is property: ...LogLevel=INFO... Information about the appropriate values for this property is available in the Node Manager Documentation at 10.3 WebLogic Documentation (and in further releases) which states: LogLevel: Severity level of logging used for the Node Manager log. Node Manager uses the same logging levels as WebLogic Server. Default value: INFO However, this is incorrect. WLS has its own implementation of LogLevel, but Node Manager uses the standard Log Level from the java.util.logging.Level class. Therefore, the possible values for Node Manager LogLevel, in descending order are: SEVERE (highest value) WARNING INFO CONFIG FINE FINER FINEST (lowest value) The highest value provides only messages at the severe level. The warning level provides warning messages and severe messages, and so on. Besides those levels, ALL and OFF are also accepted. For example, if you only want Severe messages to be logged, select SEVERE. If you need the most detailed tracing available, select FINEST. For more information on what it will log at each level, please read the Java SE API for LoggingLevel.

• If I were in a Silverlight focus group, here is ten things I would say.

  Silverlight is a great product right off the shelf. I use it, love it and spend a lot of time helping the community understand it. This however, doesn’t mean that I don’t think that it can get better. If I were invited to a Microsoft Focus Group about Silverlight here is 10 things I would say:  We need more navigation templates. I’ve found (4) templates that Microsoft has released (Cosmo, Windows 7, Accent and JetPack). This number needs to be around 16. In order to get more people developing for Silverlight, we need to give them a variety of templates to get them off the ground quickly. Silverlight needs to ship with the next version of Windows. At least version 4 needs to be pre-installed on Windows going forward. It’s small, in its own sandbox and I cannot find a reason for it not to be included. Silverlight needs to run on more platforms.  iOS and Android are the key here. I think Microsoft should shoot for Android first since I believe Android will take the lead in the mobile market (at least for the short-term). It would also be great to see Microsoft use Silverlight as the focus on their new tablets / “AppleTV”. I would even invest in getting it working with Kinect. When creating a new project in Silverlight, we should have the option to create a Unit Test. Most Silverlight developers are not unit testing. If this is surprising to you then you need to get out and talk to more developers. I partially blame this on Microsoft. When you create a new ASP.NET MVC application, you simply put a check to create a Unit Test project. We need the same thing for Silverlight. We should steer the developer into the right direction. Design patterns such as MVVM need to be easier to implement in Silverlight solutions.  I’d go so far as to say that MVVM Light should ship with Visual Studio. With the project / item templates and code snippets, Laurent puts you into the right direction. This is the way that it should have been. Easy for the 9-5 developer to grasp. I believe the majority of developers use code behind because that’s what is in all the demos provided by Microsoft. They are not trying to write sucky code it is that they simply don’t know a better way.  The XAP Files should be obfuscated/unused references deleted by default when in “Release” mode. A better Silverlight experience starts with a smaller XAP file. The less that a user has to download is the better, even with the majority of people on broadband. I would also recommend built-in obfuscation by Microsoft. People are paranoid that they can rename the .zip and run it through reflector. Get rid of the boring install experiences. Here is a great write up on what I’m talking about. The default “Install Silverlight” and “Loading screens” suck. They suck bad. We need a choice of templates that a professional designer has created.  Silverlight needs to supports more image formats. For example: it would be great to use .gif’s without converting them to .png.    Switching between Blend 4 and VS2010 to develop a Silverlight application is a pain. Probably one of the biggest issues that I can’t think of a good solution for. It would be nice if VS2012 had the best of both worlds and you never have to leave VS. We need reporting controls with SSRS included with the Silverlight Toolkit. I can’t think of another control that we need built into the toolkit. It would also be helpful to have export to .xls, .pdf and .doc included with the control. I hope that this post will at least get a few people talking.   Sometimes we need to take small notes to remember things, one way to do this is to use stick notes and have them all around our desktop. But what happening if you have a lot of notes and a small office? You'll need a piece of software that will sort things for you and also it will provide you a quick way to retrieve the notes when need. Did I mention that this will keep your desktop clean and also will reduce paper waste? During the next days we'll gonna create an application that will let you manage your notes, put them in different categories etc. I'll show you step by step what do you need to do and finally you'll have the application run on multiple systems, such as Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. The only pre-requisition for this lesson is to have JDK 7 with JavaFX installed and an IDE, preferably NetBeans. I'll call this application Notes…. Part I - Say Hello from Java  From NetBeans go to Files->New Project Chose JavaFX->JavaFX FXML Application Project Name: Notes FXML name: NotesUI Check Create Application Class and name it Main After this the project is created and you'll see the following structure As a best practice I advice you to have your code in your own package instead of the default one. right click on Source Packages and chose New->Java Package name it something like this: com.turuga.notes and click Next after the package is created, select all the 3 files from step #3 and drag them over the new package chose Refactor, as this will make sure all the references are correctly moved inside the new package now you should have the following structure if you'll try to run the project you'll get an error: Unable to find class: Main right click on project name Notes and click properties go to Run and you'll see Application Class set to Main, but because we have defined our own packages, this location has been change, so click on Browse and the correct one appear: com.turuga.notes.Main last modification before running the project is to right click on NotesUI.fxml and chose Edit (if you'll double click it will open in JavaFX Scene Builder) look around line 9 and change fx:controller="NotesUIController" to fx:controller="com.turuga.notes.NotesUIController" now you are ready to run it and you should see the following On the next lesson we'll continue to play with NetBeans and start working on the interface of our project

  I got the above errror when I tried to run WSS default site after installing and running the Advance System Optimizer 3.o. I resolve this by going to the following locations and adding permission for the admin users accounts (ASP.NET & IIS_WPG) I have set up for Sharepoint. C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files C:\WINDOWS\System 32\Log Files C:\WINDOWS\Temp After the correct permissions have been added, Sharepoint works as normal.
