  WebForms web site upon first launch from VS2008 throws this exception on my dev machine, after clicking continue everything works. Also, everything works on server when deployed. What is this VJSharpCodeProvider, why is it being loaded in vb.net project and why did it start happening all of a sudden? • spring web application context is not loaded from jar file in WEB-INF/lib when running tomcat in eclipse

  I am experimenting with spring, maven, and eclipse but stumbling on a weird issue. I am running Eclipse Helios SR1 with the STS (Spring tools suite) plugin which includes the Maven plugin also. What i want to achieve is a spring mvc webapp which uses an application context loaded from a local application context xml file, but also from other application contexts in jar files dependencies included in WEB-INF/lib. What i'd ultimately like to do is have my persistence layer separated in its own jar file but containing its own spring context files with persistence specific configuration (e.g a jpa entityManagerFactory for example). So to experiment with loading resources from jar dependencies, i created a simple maven project from eclipse, which defines an applicationContext.xml file in src/main/resources Inside, i define a bean <bean id="mybean" class="org.test.MyClass" /> and create the class in the org.test package I run mvn-install from eclipse, which generates me a jar file containing my class and the applicationContext.xml file: testproj.jar |_META-INF |_org |_test |_MyClass.class |_applicationContext.xml I then create a spring mvc project from the Spring template projects provided by STS. I have configured an instance of Tomcat 7.0.8 , and also an instance of springSource tc Server within eclipse. Deploying the newly created project on both servers works without problem. I then add my previous project as a maven dependency of the mvc project. the jar file is correctly added in the Maven Dependencies of the project. In the web.xml that is generated, i now want to load the applicationContext.xml from the jar file as well as the existing one generated for the project.   I have a movie collection catalogue with local links to folders and files for an easy access. Recently I reorganaized my entire hard disk space and I need to update the links and I'm trying to do that automatically with Perl. I can export the data in a XML file and import it again. I can extract the new filepaths with the use of File::Find but I'm stuck with two problems. I have no idea how to connect the $title from the new filepath with the corresponding $title from the XML file. I'm dealing with such files for the first time and I don't know how to proceed with the replacement process.   I have the below code that opens up a file, reads it into a buffer and then closes the file. The close file system call requires that the file descriptor number be in the ebx register. The ebx register gets the file descriptor number before the read system call is made. My question is should I save the ebx register on the stack or somewhere before I make the read system call, (could int 80h trash the ebx register?). And then restore the ebx register for the close system call? Or is the code I have below fine and safe? I want to edit a Box's name, so I send it to the client using JSON. Note that I don't serialize ParentStorage because I'm not changing which storage it's in. The client edits the name and sends the Box back as JSON. The server deserializes it back into a Box entity. Problem is, the ParentStorage property is null. When I try to save the Box to the database, it updates the name, but also removes the relationship to the Storage. How do I properly serialize and deserialize an entity like a Box, while keeping the JSON data size to a minimum?

• Cannot SSH after resetting firewall on VPS

  I'm having trouble trying to SSH to my Debian 5 VPS with blacknight. It was working fine until I did the following: Logged into 'Parallels Infrastructure Manager' - Container - Firewall - Set to 'Normal Firewall settings'. It told me there was an error with the IPTables and offered the option again with a checkbox to 'reset' firewall settings, I selected this.   We're using the default SMTP server for our websites to send mail with, but in the last day sending messages started getting this error: Insufficient system storage. The server response was: 4.3.1 Out of memory Further digging found this message in the System event log: SMTP server cannot create a file in the queue directory C:\Inetpub\mailroot\Queue\ I've since given the Everyone account full control of the mailroot folder but it's still happening. There's enough space on the server and to the best of my knowledge nothing on the server has been changed

• Windows and SQL Azure Best Practices: Affinity Groups

  When you create a Windows Azure application, you’ll pick a subscription to put it under. This is a billing container - underneath that, you’ll deploy a Hosted Service. That holds the Web and Worker Roles that you’ll deploy for your applications. along side that, you use the Storage Account to create storage for the application. (In some cases, you might choose to use only storage or Roles - the info here applies anyway) As you are setting up your environment, you’re asked to pick a “region” where your application will run. If you choose a Region, you’ll be asked where to put the Roles. You’re given choices like Asia, North America and so on. This is where the hardware that physically runs your code lives. We have lots of fault domains, power considerations and so on to keep that set of datacenters running, but keep in mind that this is where the application lives. You also get this selection for Storage Accounts. When you make new storage, it’s a best practice to put it where your computing is. This makes the shortest path from the code to the data, and then back out to the user. One of the selections for the location is “Anywhere U.S.”. This selection might be interpreted to mean that we will bias towards keeping the data and the code together, but that may not be the case. There is a specific abstraction we created for just that purpose: Affinity Groups. An Affinity Group is simply a name you can use to tie together resources. You can do this in two places - when you’re creating the Hosted Service (shown above) and on it’s own tree item on the left, called “Affinity Groups”. When you select either of those actions, You’re presented with a dialog box that allows you to specify a name, and then the Region that  names ties the resources to. Now you can select that Affinity Group just as if it were a Region, and your code and data will stay together. That helps with keeping the performance high. • NoSQL is not about object databases

  NoSQL as a movement is an interesting beast. I kinda like that it’s negatively defined (I happen to belong myself to at least one other such a-community). It’s not in its roots about proposing one specific new silver bullet to kill an old problem. it’s about challenging the consensus. Actually, blindly and systematically replacing relational databases with object databases would just replace one set of issues with another. No, the point is to recognize that relational databases are not a universal answer -although they have been used as one for so long- and recognize instead that there’s a whole spectrum of data storage solutions out there. Why is it so hard to recognize, by the way? You are already using some of those other data storage solutions every day. Let me cite a few: The file system Active Directory XML / JSON documents The Web e-mail Logs Excel files EXIF blobs in your photos Relational databases And yes, object databases It’s just a fact of modern life. Notice by the way that most of the data that you use every day is unstructured and thus mostly unsuitable for relational storage. It really is more a matter of recognizing it: you are already doing NoSQL. So what happens when for any reason you need to simultaneously query two or more of these heterogeneous data stores? Well, you build an index of sorts combining them, and that’s what you query instead. Of course, there’s not much distance to travel from that to realizing that querying is better done when completely separated from storage. So why am I writing about this today? Well, that’s something I’ve been giving lots of thought, on and off, over the last ten years. When I built my first CMS all that time ago, one of the main problems my customers were facing was to manage and make sense of the mountain of unstructured data that was constituting most of their business. The central entity of that system was the file system because we were dealing with lots of Word documents, PDFs, OCR’d articles, photos and static web pages. We could have stored all that in SQL Server. It would have worked. Ew. I’m so glad we didn’t. Today, I’m working on Orchard (another CMS ;). It’s a pretty young project but already one of the questions we get the most is how to integrate existing data. One of the ideas I’ll be trying hard to sell to the rest of the team in the next few months is to completely split the querying from the storage. Not only does this provide great opportunities for performance optimizations, it gives you homogeneous access to heterogeneous and existing data sources. For free.

• Why is Apache ignoring VirtualHost directive for first name in hosts file?

  Standard pre-emptive disclaimer: host names, IP addresses, and directories are anonymised. Problem We have a server with Apache 2.2 (WAMP) listening on one IP and IIS listening on another. An ASP.Net application running under IIS needs to do some simple GETs from the PHP applications running under Apache to build a unified search results page. This is a virtual server, so the internal IPs are mapped somehow to external ones. The internal DNS system doesn't resolve the publicly published names under which the applications are accessed externally, so the obvious solution was to add them to etc/hosts with the internal IP address: 127.0.0.1 localhost # 10.0.1.17 is the IP address Apache listens on 10.0.1.17 phpappone.example.com 10.0.1.17 phpapptwo.example.com After restarting Apache, phpappone.example.com stopped working. Instead of returning pages from that app, Apache was returning pages from the default site. The other PHP apps worked fine. The documentation for name-based virtual hosts says that Now when a request arrives, the server will first check if it is using an IP address that matches the NameVirtualHost. If it is, then it will look at each <VirtualHost> section with a matching IP address and try to find one where the ServerName or ServerAlias matches the requested hostname. If it finds one, then it uses the configuration for that server. If no matching virtual host is found, then the first listed virtual host that matches the IP address will be used. Yet that isn't what we observe. It seems that if the hostname is the first hostname listed against the IP address in etc/hosts then it uses the configuration from the main server and skips the virtual host lookup. Workarounds The workaround we've put in place for the time being is to add a fake line to the hosts file: 127.0.0.1 localhost # 10.0.1.17 is the IP address Apache listens on 10.0.1.17 fakename.example.com 10.0.1.17 phpappone.example.com 10.0.1.17 phpapptwo.example.com This fixes the problem, but it's not very elegant. In addition, it seems a bit brittle: reordering lines in the hosts file (or deleting the nonsense value) can break it. The other obvious workaround is to make the main server configuration match that of the troublesome virtual host, but that is equally brittle. A third option, which is just ugly, would be to change the ASP.Net code to take separate config items for the IP address and the hostname and to implement HTTP manually. Ugh. The question Is there a good solution to this problem which localises any "Do not touch this!" explanations to the Apache config files?

• Link instead of Attaching

  With email storage not being an issue in many companies (I think I currently have 25GB of storage on my email account, I don’t even think about storage), this encourages bad behaviors such as liberally attaching office documents to emails instead of sharing a link to the document in SharePoint or SkyDrive or some file share etc. Attaching a file admittedly has its usage scenarios too, but it should not be the default. I thought I'd list the reasons why sharing a link can be better than attaching files directly. In no particular order: Better Review. It allows multiple recipients to review the file and their comments are aggregated into a single document. The alternative is everyone having to detach the document, add their comments, then send back to you, and then you have to collate. Wirth the alternative, you also potentially miss out on recipients reading comments from other recipients. Always up to date. The attachment becomes a fork instead of an always up to date document. For example, you send the email on Thursday, I only open it on Tuesday: between those days you could have made updates that now I am missing because you decided to share a link instead of an attachment. Better bookmarking. When I need to find that document you shared, you are forcing me to search through my email (I may not even be running outlook), instead of opening the link which I have bookmarked in my browser or my collection of links in my OneNote or from the recent/pinned links of the office app on my task bar, etc. Can control access. If someone accidentally or naively forwards your link to someone outside your group/org who you’d prefer not to have access to it, the location of the document can be protected with specific access control. Can add more recipients. If someone adds people to the email thread in outlook, your attachment doesn't get re-attached - instead, the person added is left without the attachment unless someone remembers to re-attach it. If it was a link, they are immediately caught up without further actions. Enable Discovery. If you put it on a share, I may be able to discover other cool stuff that lives alongside that document. Save on storage. So this doesn't apply to me given my opening statement, but if in your company you do have such limitations, attaching files eats up storage on all recipients accounts and will also get "lost" when those people archive email (and lose completely at some point if they follow the company retention policy). Like I said, attachments do have their place, but they should be an explicit choice for explicit reasons rather than the default.   Why does OS X insist on spinning up all the attached external drives (firewire, usb) when loading a file from the local (internal) drive? It's driving me insane that I have to wait for 3 attached drives (1 back-up, 2 media) to spin up -- a total of 20s -- to access a file that is located only on my local/internal drive. There is no obvious need to access the other drives; nothing is being read from them and nothing need be written. Examples: Quicktime X opening a file from the local HDD. Starting Caffeine, an app which doesn't access any other files at all. Can I tell OS X to only spin those drives up when actually accessing them?

  Installation media: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso I tried a lot of different boot parameters, but either the installer ignored the preseed configuration, or it boot itself directly as LiveCD. An example of the boot parameters I've tried: auto url=http://mydomain.com/path/preseed.cfg boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- If I remove only-ubiquity, it boots as a LiveCD. If I remove boot=casper, it won't boot. If I add vga=normal locale=en_US console-setup/layoutcode=us console-setup/ask_detect=false interface=auto, it still can't do automatic install. If I remove auto, it's the same. What am I missing? From the apache log of the server hosting preseed.cfg, I see that the installer has no problems fetching the preseed file. My preseed file is almost identical to the one at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt. Moreover, I have run debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg to ensure that the preseed file is correct. Any ideas?
