  • What does static linking against a library actually do?

    - by Salgar
Say I had a library called libfoo which contained a class, a few static variables, possibly something with 'C' linkage, and a few other functions. Now I have a main program which looks like this: int main() { return 5+5; } When I compile and link this, I link against libfoo. Will this have any effect? Will my executable increase in size? If so, why? Do the static variables or their addresses get copied into my executable? Apologies if there is a similar question to this or if I'm being particularly stupid in any way.

  • How should I compile boost library in a small project?

    - by Vincenzo
I have a small project where I need just part of boost library, boost::regex in particular. This is what I've done so far: /include /boost /regex /math .. 189 dirs, files, etc. /lib /boost-regex c_regex_traits.cpp cpp_regex_traits.cpp .. ~20 .cpp files myprog.cpp In my Makefile I compile all boost-regex .cpp files one by one, producing .obj files. Next, I'm building my project by means of compiling myprog.cpp together with all that .obj files from /lib/boost/regex. The question is whether I'm doing everything correct? The size of my output file is rather big (~3.5Mb), while my code is extremely small (10 lines).

  • How to handle all unhandled exceptions when using Task Parallel Library?

    - by Buu Nguyen
I'm using the TPL (Task Parallel Library) in .NET 4.0. I want to be able to centralize the handling logic of all unhandled exceptions by using the Thread.GetDomain().UnhandledException event. However, in my application, the event is never fired for threads started with TPL code, e.g. Task.Factory.StartNew(...). The event is indeed fired if I use something like new Thread(threadStart).Start(). This MSDN article suggests to use Task#Wait() to catch the AggregateException when working with TPL, but that is not I want because it is not "centralized" enough a mechanism. Does anyone experience same problem at all or is it just me? Do you have any solution for this?

  • WP7/silverlight Images does not stay within a grid/stackpanel when using the toolkit to provide gesture support

    - by gforg
    I have few buttons and below that I am displaying an image and have used the WP7/Silverlight toolkit to provide support for Gestures. Everything works fine, until i do gestures like pinch and then moving it up/down. Both these gestures work fine but they do not seem to respect the stackpanel/grid the image is present in and they go over that and on top of the buttons. Do u know how to restrict these? I see the following function when gestures are called. private void OnPinchStarted(object sender, PinchStartedGestureEventArgs e) { initialAngle = ImageScaling.Rotation; initialScale = ImageScaling.ScaleX; } private void OnPinchDelta(object sender, PinchGestureEventArgs e) { ImageScaling.Rotation = initialAngle + e.TotalAngleDelta; ImageScaling.ScaleX = ImageScaling.ScaleY = initialScale * e.DistanceRatio; } private void OnDragDelta(object sender, DragDeltaGestureEventArgs e) { ImageScaling.TranslateX += e.HorizontalChange; ImageScaling.TranslateY += e.VerticalChange; }

  • are runtime linking library globals shared among plugins loaded with dlopen?

    - by conejoroy
I've a C++ program that links at runtime with, lets say, mylib.so. then, the same program uses dlopen()/dlsym() to load a function from myplugin.so, dynamic library that in turn has dependencies to mylib.so. My question is: will the program AND the function in the plugin access the same globals defined in mydlib.so in the same memory area reserved for the program, or each will be assigned different, unrelated copies in its own memory space? if the latter is the default behaviour, is it possible to change that? Thanks in advance =)!

  • Anyone Know a Great Sparse One Dimensional Array Library in Python?

    - by TheJacobTaylor
I am working on an algorithm in Python that uses arrays heavily. The arrays are typically sparse and are read from and written to constantly. I am currently using relatively large native arrays and the performance is good but the memory usage is high (as expected). I would like to be able to have the array implementation not waste space for values that are not used and allow an index offset other than zero. As an example, if my numbers start at 1,000,000 I would like to be able to index my array starting at 1,000,000 and not be required to waste memory with a million unused values. Array reads and writes needs to be fast. Expanding into new territory can be a small delay but reads and writes should be O(1) if possible. Does anybody know of a library that can do it? Thanks!

  • Which jQuery/css menu library for working with ASP.NET TreeView or Menu controls.

    - by ProfK
I'm looking for a good jQuery or CSS, or combo, library to enance my left side menu in an an intranet application. I don't like the 'hover only' expand/collapse style of the ASP.NET Menu control on its own, and I don't like the 'icon-click only' expand/collapse style of the TreeView control on its own. I plan on trying the CSS Control Adapters, to render the menu with some self-respect, i.e. as nested <ul> or <ol> elements instead of the usual orgy of tables. Beyond that, I need something to give a bit of style and menulike behaviour to these nested lists, and I would prefer a jQuery plugin for this. Which should I use?

  • Which is the best API/Library to use when accessing a WebCam in .Net?

    - by Doctor Jones
Which is the best API to use when accessing a WebCam in .Net? (I know they can be webcam specific, I am willing to buy a new webcam if it means better results). I want to write a desktop application that will take video from a webcam and store it in MPEG4 formats (DivX, Xvid, etc...). I would also like to access bitmap stills from the device so I can do image comparison between frames. I have tried various libraries, and none have really been a great fit (some have performance issues (very inconsistent framerates), some have image quality limitations, some just crash out for seemingly no reason. I want to get high quality video (as high as I can get) and a decent framerate. My webcam is more than up to the job and I was hoping that there would be a nice Managed .Net library around that would help my cause. Are webcam APIs all just incredibly bad?

  • Using the JNotify library, how can you tell if a deleted file was a file or a directory?

    - by Moeri
For those unfamiliar with JNotify, this is a library which provides an easy way to monitor events in a directory. For instance, when a file gets deleted in the selected folder, the method "fileDeleted" gets called, along with a few parameters. Here's an example of the fileDeleted method: public void fileDeleted(int wd, String rootPath, String name) { print("deleted " + rootPath + " : " + name); } Now, I would like to know if the deleted file was a file or directory. My usual approach is to create a new File object with the given path, and use the methods isFile() and isDirectory() However, since this file is already deleted, these methods always return false. So here's my concrete question: I have the path to a deleted file or directory, how can I tell wether it was a file or a directory? Is there a workaround to this? What's the best practice to do here? Thank you in advance.

  • Is there a good collection library for C-language?

    - by matti
We have to maintain and even develop C-code of our legacy system. Is there good collection library that would support Java/C# (new versions) style collections. Hashtable, HashSet, etc. Of course without objects, but with structs. The HashTable key limitations to "strings" and ints is not a problem. It wouldn't be bad if it's free even for commercial use. I'm back to C from C# and I must say i'm depressed using our own libraries and the language in general. We're using VS2005 and MS C-compiler if that has nothing to do with anything. Thanks & BR -Matti

  • What's the state of support for SHA-2 in various platforms?

    - by Cheeso
I read that SHA-1 is being retired from the FIPS 180-2 standard. Apparently there are weaknesses in SHA-1 that led to this decision. Can anyone elaborate on the basis for that decision? Are there implications for the use of SHA-1 in commercial applications? My real questions are: What is the state of SHA-2 support in various class libraries and platforms? Should I attempt to move to SHA-2? Interested in mainstream platforms: .NET, Java, C/C++, Python, Javascript, etc.

  • Is there any Python library that allows me to parse an HTML document similar to what jQuery does?

    - by Sachin Tendulkar
Is there any Python library that allows me to parse an HTML document similar to what jQuery does? i.e. I'd like to be able to use CSS selector syntax to grab an arbitrary set of nodes from the document, read their content/attributes, etc. The only Python HTML parsing lib I've used before was BeautifulSoup, and even though it's fine I keep thinking it would be faster to do my parsing if I had jQuery syntax available. :D Write an iterative program that finds the largest number of McNuggets that cannot be bought in exact quantity. Your program should print the answer in the following format (where the correct number is provided in place of n): "Largest number of McNuggets that cannot be bought in exact quantity: n"

  • How to parse a string to an integer without library functions?

    - by dack
Hi, I was recently asked this question in an interview: "How could you parse a string of the form '12345' into its integer representation 12345 without using any library functions, and regardless of language?" I thought of two answers, but the interviewer said there was a third. Here are my two solutions: Solution 1: Keep a dictionary which maps '1' = 1, '2' = 2, etc. Then parse the string one character at a time, look up the character in your dictionary, and multiply by place value. Sum the results. Solution 2: Parse the string one character at a time and subtract '0' from each character. This will give you '1' - '0' = 0x1, '2' - '0' = 0x2, etc. Again, multiply by place value and sum the results. Can anyone think of what a third solution might be? Thanks.

BUT,now question is when i tried it with Cacti it will not respond anything, but detect windows snmp service..it just respond to the requests of the SNMP Managers. So,Is it mandatory to provide mib with SNMP Agent??.

  • Netbeans has Realy Bad FTP support , Forces me to download all Files even before I can continue

    - by Vivek
Hello Friends , have started using Netbeans recently after using Aptana, phpdesigner and Notepad++ . I love Netbeans for it's speed and it has almost everything I want except for the fact that the FTP support is really Bad. To start working on a FTP server , I have to download all the files to my localhost first which is such a waste of bandwidth & if those files are many ie. 1000+ files then it's really annoying . I have tried mounting remote FTP as local filesystem in Windows and then using Netbeans to access it but that does'nt work out too .. If anybody using netbeans a lot for PHP development can guide me on this , then I would be highly obliged.. this trivial problem is keeping me from using this awesome IDE . Thanks & Regards .

  • Is there a c++ library that provides functionality to execute an external program and read its outpu

    - by BD at Rivenhill
Basically, I'm looking for something that will allow me to replicate the following Perl code: my $fh = new FileHandle; $fh->open("foo |"); while (<$fh>) { # Do something with this line of data. } This is in the context of Linux, so a library that is specific to Windows will not help. I know how to write a program that does fork/exec/dup2 and all that basic shell-type jazz, but there are some fiddly details involving terminals that I don't feel like messing around with (and I don't have a copy of "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" or a similar reference handy), so I'm hoping that someone has already solved this problem.

  • Can Graphical Operations be combined in Qt or any other library ?

    - by Sunny
Hi, Here is a Scenario, A series of operations that I will call for painting, QPainter p(this); 1). p.fillRect(0,0,320,240, RED_COLOR) 2) p.drawLine(0,0,100,100, BLUE_COLOR) 3) p.fillRect(0,0,320,240, YELLOW_COLOR) Now I want that painter should not draw first FillRect Function. It should not draw line. It should only perform last operation. Is there any way to achive this optimization in Qt. Is this type of drawing/painting optimizations are supported by any library?

  • Dynamic loaded libraries and shared global symbols

    - by phlipsy
    Since I observed some strange behavior of global variables in my dynamically loaded libraries, I wrote the following test. At first we need a statically linked library: The header test.hpp #ifndef __BASE_HPP #define __BASE_HPP #include <iostream> class test { private: int value; public: test(int value) : value(value) { std::cout << "test::test(int) : value = " << value << std::endl; } ~test() { std::cout << "test::~test() : value = " << value << std::endl; } int get_value() const { return value; } void set_value(int new_value) { value = new_value; } }; extern test global_test; #endif // __BASE_HPP and the source test.cpp #include "base.hpp" test global_test = test(1); Then I wrote a dynamically loaded library: library.cpp #include "base.hpp" extern "C" { test* get_global_test() { return &global_test; } } and a client program loading this library: client.cpp #include <iostream> #include <dlfcn.h> #include "base.hpp" typedef test* get_global_test_t(); int main() { global_test.set_value(2); // global_test from libbase.a std::cout << "client: " << global_test.get_value() << std::endl; void* handle = dlopen("./liblibrary.so", RTLD_LAZY); if (handle == NULL) { std::cout << dlerror() << std::endl; return 1; } get_global_test_t* get_global_test = NULL; void* func = dlsym(handle, "get_global_test"); if (func == NULL) { std::cout << dlerror() << std::endl; return 1; } else get_global_test = reinterpret_cast<get_global_test_t*>(func); test* t = get_global_test(); // global_test from liblibrary.so std::cout << "liblibrary.so: " << t->get_value() << std::endl; std::cout << "client: " << global_test.get_value() << std::endl; dlclose(handle); return 0; } Now I compile the statically loaded library with g++ -Wall -g -c base.cpp ar rcs libbase.a base.o the dynamically loaded library g++ -Wall -g -fPIC -shared library.cpp libbase.a -o liblibrary.so and the client g++ -Wall -g -ldl client.cpp libbase.a -o client Now I observe: The client and the dynamically loaded library possess a different version of the variable global_test. But in my project I'm using cmake. The build script looks like this: CMAKE_MINIMUM_REQUIRED(VERSION 2.6) PROJECT(globaltest) ADD_LIBRARY(base STATIC base.cpp) ADD_LIBRARY(library MODULE library.cpp) TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES(library base) ADD_EXECUTABLE(client client.cpp) TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES(client base dl) analyzing the created makefiles I found that cmake builds the client with g++ -Wall -g -ldl -rdynamic client.cpp libbase.a -o client This ends up in a slightly different but fatal behavior: The global_test of the client and the dynamically loaded library are the same but will be destroyed two times at the end of the program. Am I using cmake in a wrong way? Is it possible that the client and the dynamically loaded library use the same global_test but without this double destruction problem?

  • Would it be useful to change java to support both static and dynamic types?

    - by James A. N. Stauffer
    What if a Java allow both static and dynamic types. That might allow the best of both worlds. i.e.: String str = "Hello"; var temp = str; temp = 10; temp = temp * 5; Would that be possible? Would that be beneficial? Do any languages currently support both and how well does it work out? Here is a better example (generics can't be used but the program does know the type): var username = HttpServletRequest.getSession().getAttribute("username");//Returns a String if(username.length() == 0) { //Error }

  • What is a simple C library for a set of integer sets?

    - by conradlee
I've got to modify a C program and I need to include a set of unsigned integer sets. That is, I have millions of sets of integers (each of these integer sets contains between 3 and 100 integers), and I need to store these in some structure, lets call it the directory, that can in logarithmic time tell me whether a given integer set already exists in the directory. The only operations that need to be defined on the directory is lookup and insert. This would be easy in languages with built-in support for useful data structures, but I'm a foreigner to C and looking around on Google did (surprisingly) not answer my question satisfactorily. This project looks about right: http://uthash.sourceforge.net/ but I would need to come up with my own hash key generator. This is a standard, simple problem, so I hope there is a standard and simple solution.

  • What's the best graphics library for node.js for image cropping?

    - by Travis
I'm creating a website using node.js. I have seen many libraries mentioned that piggy back on top of imagemagick etc. There is a list here: https://github.com/ry/node/wiki/modules#graphics What I'm trying to do is take the image that a user uploads, crop it/size it to certain dimensions the site requires. What is the best/most active script to do this? I'd like one with npm support. Does anyone have actual experience using some of these?

  • Can Silverlight be linked with a C++ static library ?

    - by Niklaos
Hi, I'm currently doing research to start a new project. This project will be in 2 parts a light Client (probably console) and an heavy one using silverlight. The light client must be cross-platform. However, they will both use the same Core (by the way, the core will need to use the sockets). I'd like to use C++ to build the light client but given that the core is common to both applications, it would be much appreciated if it's could be the same code. So the question is quite simple : Can Silverlight be compilated with a C++ static library ? And if it's possible, what about cross-platform issues (with moonlight) ? If it's not possible. Which language can i use to work with silverlight while being cross-platform ? Because of performance, a compilated language will be better ! Thanks for your expertise :)

  • Associate specific file extensions with my delphi app - any library for this?

    - by michal
Hi, so far if I had to associate the file extension with my application I used to simply modify the registry. However I haven't been doing it for years, and I'm afraid the things might have changed a bit. I have no idea how to prevent registry access restrictions in Windows 7 / Vista (if there are any for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT). Thus I'm looking for some delphi library, unit, code snippet or whatever which works reliably under XP, Vista and 7. Is there any which handles "backup" as well? By backup I mean possibility to revert the changes to the previous association ... Thanks in advance, m.

  • Is there a simple library that will render JSON objects as trees?

    - by Robert Gould
So, is there a VERY simple library that will render JSON objects as trees? I know that this can be done in many ways (such as YUI), but for debug purposes I'd like to simply be able to view a JSON objects I receive from a server as a tree, nothing fancy (but collapsable tree's would be a bonus). The kind of solution I'm looking for would be something like: <script source="something.js"/> <script> obj ={"hello":"world"} lib.renderJSON("someid",obj); </script> ... <div id="someid"/> Any ideas?
