• Understanding the memory consumption on iPhone

  Hello! I am working on a 2D iPhone game using OpenGL ES and I keep hitting the 24 MB memory limit – my application keeps crashing with the error code 101. I tried real hard to find where the memory goes, but the numbers in Instruments are still much bigger than what I would expect. I ran the application with the Memory Monitor, Object Alloc, Leaks and OpenGL ES instruments. When the application gets loaded, free physical memory drops from 37 MB to 23 MB, the Object Alloc settles around 7 MB, Leaks show two or three leaks a few bytes in size, the Gart Object Size is about 5 MB and Memory Monitor says the application takes up about 14 MB of real memory. I am perplexed as where did the memory go – when I dig into the Object Allocations, most of the memory is in the textures, exactly as I would expect. But both my own texture allocation counter and the Gart Object Size agree that the textures should take up somewhere around 5 MB. I am not aware of allocating anything else that would be worth mentioning, and the Object Alloc agrees. Where does the memory go? (I would be glad to supply more details if this is not enough.) Update: I really tried to find where I could allocate so much memory, but with no results. What drives me wild is the difference between the Object Allocations (~7 MB) and real memory usage as shown by Memory Monitor (~14 MB). Even if there were huge leaks or huge chunks of memory I forget about, the should still show up in the Object Allocations, shouldn’t they? I’ve already tried the usual suspects, ie. the UIImage with its caching, but that did not help. Is there a way to track memory usage “debugger-style”, line by line, watching each statement’s impact on memory usage? What I have found so far: I really am using that much memory. It is not easy to measure the real memory consumption, but after a lot of counting I think the memory consumption is really that high. My fault. I found no easy way to measure the memory used. The Memory Monitor numbers are accurate (these are the numbers that really matter), but the Memory Monitor can’t tell you where exactly the memory goes. The Object Alloc tool is almost useless for tracking the real memory usage. When I create a texture, the allocated memory counter goes up for a while (reading the texture into the memory), then drops (passing the texture data to OpenGL, freeing). This is OK, but does not always happen – sometimes the memory usage stays high even after the texture has been passed on to OpenGL and freed from “my” memory. This means that the total amount of memory allocated as shown by the Object Alloc tool is smaller than the real total memory consumption, but bigger than the real consumption minus textures (real – textures < object alloc < real). Go figure. I misread the Programming Guide. The memory limit of 24 MB applies to textures and surfaces, not the whole application. The actual red line lies a bit further, but I could not find any hard numbers. The consensus is that 25–30 MB is the ceiling. When the system gets short on memory, it starts sending the memory warning. I have almost nothing to free, but other applications do release some memory back to the system, especially Safari (which seems to be caching the websites). When the free memory as shown in the Memory Monitor goes zero, the system starts killing. I had to bite the bullet and rewrite some parts of the code to be more efficient on memory, but I am probably still pushing it. I

• Taking screenshots in Windows Vista, Windows 7, with transparent areas outside the app region

  Hey Folks, I am trying to take a screenshot of an application and I would like to make the parts of the rectangle that are not part of the applications region be transparent. So for instance on a standard windows application I would like to make the rounded corners transparent. OK, back to the problem ;) When I run this test app on XP (or Vista/Windows 7 with Aero off), I get something like this, which is great because I can eek an xor mask out of this that can be used later with BitBlt. Here is the problem, on Vista or Windows 7 with Aero enabled, there isn't necessarily a region on the window, in fact in most cases there isn't. Can anybody help me figure out how to get the region of the application like this on these platforms. Here are some of the approaches I have already tried... 1. Using the PrintWindow function: This doesn't work because it gives back a screenshot taken of the window with Aero off and this window is a different shape from the window returned with Aero on 2 Using the Desktop Window Manager API to get a full size thumbnail: This didn't work because it draws directly to the screen and from what I can tell you can't get a screenshot directly out of this api. Yeah, I could open a window with a pink background, show the thumbnail, take a screenshot then hide this temporary window but thats a horrible user experience and a complete hack I would rather not have my name on. 3. Using Graphics.CopyFromScreen or some other pinvoke variant of this: This doesn't work because I can't assume that the window I need information from is at the top of the z-order on the screen. Right now, the best solution I can think of is to special case Aero on Windows 7 and Vista to manually rub out the corners by hard coding some graphics paths I paint out but this solution would suck since any application that performs custom skinning will break this. • HttpWebRequest: How to find a postal code at Canada Post through a WebRequest with x-www-form-enclos

  I'm currently writing some tests so that I may improve my skills with the Internet interaction through Windows Forms. One of those tests is to find a postal code which should be returned by Canada Post website. My default URL setting is set to: http://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/apps/fpc/personal/findByCity?execution=e4s1 The required form fields are: streetNumber, streetName, city, province The contentType is "application/x-www-form-enclosed" EDIT: Please consider the value "application/x-www-form-encoded" instead of point 3 value as the contentType. (Thanks EricLaw-MSFT!) The result I get is not the result expected. I get the HTML source code of the page where I could manually enter the information to find the postal code, but not the HTML source code with the found postal code. Any idea of what I'm doing wrong? Shall I consider going the XML way? Is it first of all possible to search on Canada Post anonymously? • Trouble calculating correct decimal digits.

  I am trying to create a program that will do some simple calculations, but am having trouble with the program not doing the correct math, or placing the decimal correctly, or something. Some other people I asked cannot figure it out either. • Python Mechanize unable to avoid redirect when Post

  I am trying to crawl a site using mechanize. The site provides search results in different pages. When posting to get the next set of results, something is wrong and the server redirects me to the first page, asking mechanize to update the SearchSession Cookie. I have been debugging the requests using Firefox and they look quite the same, and I am unable to find the problem. Any suggestion? To address this issue, I have encapsulated the invocation of MyApp.java in a shell script and then appended “/dev/null 2&1 &” to spawn a separate background process. Here is the snip (this is just a snip and not the actual one) from runTest.sh: java - DMY_APP_HOME =$2 com.foo.MyApp > /dev/null 2>&1 & Although this solves my issue, is there any other way to do it? Am I missing any argument for exec-maven-plugin?

• "Local transaction already has 1 non-XA Resource: cannot add more resources" error

  After reading previous questions about this error, it seems like all of them conclude that you need to enable XA on all of the data sources. But: What if I don't want a distributed transaction? What would I do if I want to start transactions on two different databases at the same time, but commit the transaction on one database and roll back the transaction on the other? I'm wondering how my code actually initiated a distributed transaction. It looks to me like I'm starting completely separate transactions on each of the databases. I ran the app on two different sun application servers. On one runs it fine, the other throws the error. I don't see any difference in how the two servers are configured although they do connect to different, but equivalent databases. So the question is Why doesn't the above code start completely independent transactions? How can I force it to start independent transactions rather than a distributed transaction? What configuration could cause the difference in behavior between the two application servers? Thanks.

• Windows NT Service shutdown issues

  I have developed middleware that provides RPC functionality to multiple client applications on multiple platforms within our organization. The middleware is written in C# and runs as a Windows NT Service. It handles things like file access to network shares, database access, etc. The middleware is hosted on two high end systems running Windows Server 2008 R2. When one of our server administrators goes to reboot the machine, primarily to do Windows Updates, there are serious problems with how the system behaves in regards to my NT Service. My service is designed to immediately stop listening for new connections, immediately start refusing new requests on existing connections, and otherwise shut down as rapidly as possible in the case of an OnStop or OnShutdown request from the SCM. Still, to maintain system integrity, operations that are currently in progress are allowed to continue for a reasonable time. Usually the server shuts down inside of 30 seconds (when the service is manually stopped for example). However, when the system is instructed to restart, my service immediately loses access to network drives and UNC paths, causing data integrity problems for any open files and partial writes to those locations. My service does list Workstation (and thus SMB Redirector) as a dependency, so I would think that my service would need to be stopped prior to Workstation/Redirector being stopped if Windows were honoring those dependencies. Basically, my application is forced to crash and burn, failing remote procedure calls and eventually being forced to terminate by the operating system after a timeout period has elapsed (seems to be on the order of 20-30 seconds). Unlike a Windows application, my Windows NT Service doesn't seem to have any power to stop a system shutdown in progress, delay the system shutdown, or even just the opportunity to save out any pending network share disk writes before being forcibly disconnected and shutdown. How is an NT Service developer supposed to have any kind of application integrity in this environment? Why is it that Forms Applications get all of the opportunity to finish their business prior to shutdown, while services seem to get no such benefits? I have tried: Calling SetProcessShutdownParameters via p/invoke to try to notify my application of the shutdown sooner to avoid Redirector shutting down before I do. Calling ServiceBase.RequestAdditionalTime with a value less than or equal to the two minute limit. Tweaking the WaitToKillServiceTimeout Everything I can think of to make my service shutdown faster. But in the end, I still get ~30 seconds of problematic time in which my service doesn't even seem to have been notified of an OnShutdown event yet, but requests are failing due to redirector no longer servicing my network share requests. How is this issue meant to be resolved? What can I do to delay or stop the shutdown, or at least be allowed to shut down my active tasks without Redirector services disappearing out from under me? I can understand what Microsoft is trying to do to prevent services from dragging their feet and showing shutdowns, but that seems like a great goal for Windows client operating systems, not for servers. I don't want my servers to shutdown fast, I want operational integrity and graceful shutdowns. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. PS in regards to writing my own middleware, this is for a telephony application with sub-second "soft-realtime" response time requirements. It does make sense, and it's not a point I'm looking to debate. :)

Currently I have a few methods to do so, however I have no idea how I could implement them when the file contains textboxes with background image. The question has to link with the image. Now I´m pretty sure that 'something' outside code is trying to access an object previously released and I can't know where or why it happens neither where it was released... As you see I used this proof of concept as the foundation of my application and it grew and grew into an application that makes use of configuration files, web services (using gSOAP and C ...) I hope you can give me some clues to where is my error ... I´ve been the hole week debugging unsuccessfully, as I said before, I think that that message comes from a point outside my code. I'd say that the problem s related with bad memory allocation or automatisms (nearly completely unknowns for me) during loading the nib components...   Hi, I'm having a fundamental issue with use of drawRect: Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The application needs to draw a variety of .png images at different times, sometimes with animation, sometimes without. A design goal that I was hoping to adhere to is to have the code inside drawRect: very simple and "dumb" - i.e. just do drawing and no other application logic. To draw the image I am using the drawAtPoint: method of UIImage. Since this method does not take a CGContext as a parameter, it can only be called within the drawRect: method. So I have: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { [firstImage drawAtPoint:CGPointMake(firstOffsetX, firstOffsetY)]; } All fine and dandy for one image. To draw multiple images (over time) the approach I have taken is to maintain an array of dictionaries with each dictionary containing an image, the point location to draw at and a flag to enable/suppress drawing for that image. I add dictionaries to the array over time and trigger drawing via the setNeedsDisplay: method of UIView. • How can I tell the size of my app during development?

  My programming decissions are directly related to how much room I have left, or worse perhaps how much I need to shave off in order to get up the 10mb limit. I have read that Apple has quietly increased the 3G & Edge download limit from 10mb up to 20mb in preparation for the iPad in April. Either way, my real question is how can I gauge a rough estimate of how large my app will end while I'm still in the development phase? Is the file size of my development folder roughly 1 to 1 ratio? Is the compressed file size of my development a better approximation? My .xcodeproj file is only a couple hundred kB, but the size of my folder is 11.8 MB. I have a .sqlite database, less than 20 small png images and a Settings.Bundle. The rest are unknown Xcode files related to build, build for iphoneOS, simulator etc.... My source code is rather large with around 1000 lines in most of the major controllers, all in all around 48 .h&.m files. But my classes folder inside my development folder is less than 800kb. Digging around inside my Build file, there is lots of iphone simulator files and debugging files which I don't think will contribute to the final product. The Application file states that it is around 2.3 MB. However, this is such a large difference from the 11.8 MB, I have to wonder if this is just another piece of the equation. I have the app on the my device, I'm in the testing phase. Therefore, I though that I would try to see how large the working version was on the device by checking in iTunes, however my development app is visible on the right-hand the application's iphone screen, but no information about the app most importantly its size. I also checked in Organizer, I used the lower portion of the screen-(Applications), found my application and selected the drop down arrow which gave my "Application Data" and a download arrow button to the right to save a file on my desktop, named with the unique AppleID. Inside the folder it had three folders-(documents, library, tmp) the documents had a copy of my .sqlite database, the library a few more files but not anything obvious or of size, and the tmp was empty. All in all the entire folder was only 164kb-which tells me that this is not the right place to find the size either. I understand that the size is considered to be the size of my binary plus all the additional files and images that I have add. Does anyone have a effective way of guaging how large the binary is or the relating the development folder size to what the final App Store application size will end up. I know that questions have been posted with similar aspects, but I could not find any answered post that really described...what files, or how to determine size specifically. I know that this question looks like a book, but I just wanted to be specific in conveying exactly what I'm looking for and the attempts thus far. *Note all files are unzipped and still in regular working Xcode order of a single app with no brought-in builds or referenced projects. • iPhone App Crashes when merging managed object contexts

  Short Version: Using two managed object contexts, and while the context is saving to the store the application bombs when I attempt to merge the two contexts and reload the table view. Long Version: Okay, so my application is set up as thus. 3 view controllers, all table views. Platforms View Controller - Games View Controller (Predicated upon platform selection) - Add Game View Controller I ran into a problem when Games View Controller was bombing when adding a new entry to the context, because the fetched results contorller wanted to update the view for something that didn't match the predicate. As a solution, I rebuilt the Add Controller to use a second NSManagedObject Context, called adding context, following the design pattern in the Core Data Books example. My Games List View Controller is a delegate for the add controller, to handle all the saving, so my addButtonPressed method looks like this - (IBAction) addButtonPressed: (id) sender { AddGameTableViewController *addGameVC = [[AddGameTableViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"AddGameTableViewController" bundle:nil]; NSManagedObjectContext *aAddingContext = [[NSManagedObjectContext alloc] init]; self.addingContext = aAddingContext; [aAddingContext release]; [addingContext setPersistentStoreCoordinator:[[gameResultsController managedObjectContext] persistentStoreCoordinator]]; addGameVC.context = addingContext; addGameVC.delegate = self; addGameVC.newGame = (Game *)[NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:@"Game" inManagedObjectContext:addingContext]; UINavigationController *addNavCon = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:addGameVC]; [self presentModalViewController:addNavCon animated:YES]; [addGameVC release]; [addNavCon release]; } There is also a delegate method which handles the saving. This all works swimmingly. The issue is getting the table view controller in the GameListViewController to update itself. Per the example, an observer is added to watch for the second context to be saved, and then to merge the addingContext with the primary one.   My application has a SQLite database in the asset folder. When the user launches my application, the database is created and the tables too. This works fine with a lot of devices (Nexus One, Htc Magic, SGS, X10… and even Htc Desire HD v2.2). My application works with all versions of Android (tested on my device (1.6, 2.2, 2.2.1 Htc Magic) and on the emulator (v1,5 until v2.3). I have just a problem with HTC DESIRE HD v2.2.1 1.72.405.3.   Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. • Word 2010 Crashing

  We have an office with all users using the same spec'ed PCs with the same Image deployed to them, so that the software and configuration is identical. I have one user whos keeps having the install of MS Word 2010 crash intermittently. First i reinstalled Office 2010 Suite, but will have the crashes. The PC has been replaced with a clean install of Windows and Office but we are still having the issues with Word crashing. We have had the user to log onto another PC which we know to be working fine, but again, Word keeps crashing. • Timer_EntityBody, Timer_ConnectionIdle and Connection Closed Unexpectly

  We have a windows application, it connects to a web service (XML web service hosted on a Windows 2008 Server IIS 7.5, no antivirus) and fetches some data to the client. But sometimes (around 5%-10% of the requests), it gives an error when trying to connect web service. This is a windows application which connects to a web service for process some data. There is not a query takes around 130 seconds on the database.

• How to stop DW20.exe running on Win 2003 Server (usual solutions already tried)

  Periodically my ASP.NET application crashes (usually because memory consumption exceeds maximum allowed by application pool) and DW20.exe starts up. This is a big problem because it uses huge amounts of memory and CPU for minutes at a time. I want to know how to stop DW20.exe from running. Please note, I have already tried these often mentioned solutions: Disabling error reporting in Control Panel System Advanced Error Reporting Disabling the Error Reporting Service Modifying the registry as in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841477 (however I might have done this wrong - this doc says "add a DWReportee value of 1" - what I did was add a DWORD entry with hexadecimal value of 1 - is this right? Also only 2 of the 4 keys were present, so I only modified these, e.g. there was no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\PCHealth key at all) So, zero points for suggesting any of the above (unless you can see I have modified the registry incorrectly) ! Also zero points for suggesting I resolve whatever is causing the application crashes :) - I am figuring this out, I just want something in the mean time to stop DW20.exe eating up all the server resources. By the way, this is a Windows 2003 SP1 server, with IIS 6 and SQL 2005 installed. There is no MS Office. Thx

• Connecting Adium to Google Talk with a 2-factor authentication account isn’t working

  Anyone else having this problem? After turning on 2-factor authentication on my Google Account I stopped being able to log in through Adium (Mac IM client that uses Pidgin’s libpurple for IM). Obviously you need to generate an application-specific password but these won’t let me log in. Application specific passwords work with other applications (e.g. Reeder for feeds and calendering on my phone). Google specifically mention Adium in their examples of setting up an application password for Google Talk so I doubt it’s a generic Adium problem. I can still access Google Talk for this account if I use a talk widget on a Google Website (Plus, or iGoogle for example). My bug report to Adium including a connection log file is up on their Trac: http://trac.adium.im/ticket/15310 . No activity there though. I also asked around in their IRC channel but no-one else could replicate the problem. If I had to guess then I’d think it was a consequence of me not having a GMail account associated with my Google account. I don’t see exactly why that would cause it, but it seems like a fairly unusual setup that might not have been tested for.

• Remote Desktop Mobile mangles barcodes coming from scanner

  We have an application here using handhelds to scan barcodes. These handhelds are actually making a remote desktop session towards a server where the application runs. Works fine. Now we have bought some new Motorola MC55's running 'Windows Mobile 6.1 Classic', and when using the application over remote desktop: it mangles the characters of the barcodes.... I already tried following things: When scanning a barcode on the MC55 itself it is displayed correctly When scanning a barcode via the remote desktop into a notepad session it is incorrect. Played with all options of the 'Remote Desktop Mobile' - no result Disabled 'autocorrect' and 'suggest words when entering text' on the input settings - no result The strange things is: a barcode which consists of only numbers gets scanned correctly the mangled characters comes through in lower case For some codes \t is mangled in between (should normally be entered after the barcode) e.g.: 'PERIN4' becomes 'ERINp4' 'MGZB' becomes 'GZB m' 'BAK664' becomes 'AK664 b' 'MAGBFA01' becomes 'AGBFmA01' '5021879949500' gets scanned correctly Final solution: Suppllier of the handhelds said the handheld was sending the characters too fast over the remote desktop connection. They changed the handheld to wait for 50ms between sending each character, which produced correct results right now. Scanning a barcode became somewhat slower but it's almost not remarkable to endusers.

• How can I trigger the creation of a new CLB file?

  I'm currently having a problem with an application using COM running on Windows Vista. The application runs ok on one machine, but doesn't work on a similar configured machine. Both machines are virtual images originating from the same source image. While searching the registry for causes of this error, I came across the CLBVersion key in HKCR\CLSID which seems to have something to do with COM. The value of the key differs between the two machines (0x6 on the erroneous one, 0xc on the working one). Also there are files containing the same number in their filenames in the %SystemRoot\Registration directories of the machines. They are called R000000000006.clb and R00000000000c.clb respectively. I have already searched the windows event log for anything leading to the creation of those files (I have searched by the creation date of the files). Now a few questions regarding the registry keys and the files: Is it correct, that this is connected to COM? What is the function of the files? What causes the creation of a new "CLBVersion"? Is there a way for me to trigger the creation of a new CLB file? edit: I have now found out, that this has nothing to do with my application error. But I would still be interested in details about the registry key and the files. An installation of Visual Studio 2005 has brought the second machine to the same configuration (0xc in registry and file) as the other one.
