• How to select the most recent set of dated records from a mysql table

  I am storing the response to various rpc calls in a mysql table with the following fields: Table: rpc_responses timestamp (date) method (varchar) id (varchar) response (mediumtext) PRIMARY KEY(timestamp,method,id) What is the best method of selecting the most recent responses for all existing combinations of method and id? For each date there can only be one response for a given method/id. Not all call combinations are necessarily present for a given date. There are dozens of methods, thousands of ids and at least 356 different dates Sample data: timestamp method id response 2009-01-10 getThud 16 "....." 2009-01-10 getFoo 12 "....." 2009-01-10 getBar 12 "....." 2009-01-11 getFoo 12 "....." 2009-01-11 getBar 16 "....." For example: public static void ProcessStep(Action<bool> action) { ProcessStep(() => action(true)); //this is only example, don't bother about hardcoded true } But when I use the second method (the one above), even if original action had attribute, code [1] will not be executed. How can I find if method is only wrapper and underlying method contains attribute and how to access this attribute?

• How should I declare default values for instance variables in Python?

  Should I give my class members default values like this: class Foo: num = 1 or like this? class Foo: def __init__(self): self.num = 1 In this question I discovered that in both cases, bar = Foo() bar.num += 1 is a well-defined operation. I understand that the first method will give me a class variable while the second one will not. However, if I do not require a class variable, but only need to set a default value for my instance variables, are both methods equally good? Or one of them more 'pythonic' than the other? One thing I've noticed is that in the Django tutorial, they use the second method to declare Models. Personally I think the second method is more elegant, but I'd like to know what the 'standard' way is.

• In Vim, what is the best way to select, delete, or comment out large portions of multi-screen text?

  Selecting a large amount of text that extends over many screens in an IDE like Eclipse is fairly easy since you can use the mouse, but what is the best way to e.g. select and delete multiscreen blocks of text or write e.g. three large methods out to another file and then delete them for testing purposes in Vim when using it via putty/ssh where you cannot use the mouse? I can easily yank-to-the-end-of-line or yank-to-the-end-of-code-block but if the text extends over many screens, or has lots of blank lines in it, I feel like my hands are tied in Vim. Any solutions? And a related question: is there a way to somehow select 40 lines, and then comment them all out (with "#" or "//"), as is common in most IDEs?

  All my entities can not be deleted - only deactivated, so they don't appear in any read methods (SELECT ... WHERE active=TRUE). Now I have some 1:M tables on this entities on which all CRUD operations can be executed. What is more efficient or has better performance? My first solution: To add to all CRUD operations: UPDATE ... JOIN entity e ... WHERE e.active=TRUE My second solution: Before all CRUD operations check if entity is active: if (getEntity(someId) != null) { //do some CRUD } In getEntity there's just SELECT * FROM entity WHERE id=? AND active=TRUE. Or any other solution, recommendation,...?

• A 'do' statement at the end of my perl script never runs

  In my main script, I am doing some archive manipulation. Once I have completed that, I want to run a separate script to upload my archives to and FTP server. Separately, these scripts work well. I want to add the FTP script to the end of my archive script so I only need to worry about scheduling one script to run and I want to guarantee that the first script completes it work before the FTP script is called. After looking at all the different methods to call my FTP script, I settled on 'do', however, when my do statement is at the end of the script, it never runs. When I place it in my main foreach loop, it runs fine, but it runs multiple times which I want to avoid since the FTP script can handle having multiple archives to upload. Is there something I am missing? Why does it not run? Thanks

• Flagging complex properties as Browsable in the compact framework

  I'm working on a compact framework project and whilst most of the properties are fairly straight forward (I.e. mark them as browsable in the xmta file), I'm struggling to get this to work for more complex types - on the full framework, I'd just implement a custom TypeConverter and go from there, but it seems the CF TypeConverter doesn't have any of the type converting methods to override, which has left me a little stuck? It probably should be blindingly obvious but how would I go about supporting design time property support for more complex types (for the sake of argument, assume I can already convert to and from a string, but I'd prefer to keep this strongly typed, rather than just pretend it was a string and parse it both ways. Where should I be looking to achieve this?

• Please recommend good books for telemetry / SCADA system design & programming

  I am looking at several projects, all with roughly the same fucntionality. Some instruments collect some data (or control some functionality). They commmunicate by Internet (Etehrnet/wifi/GPRS/sasatellite) with a databse server which stores the measurements and provides a browser based means of qeurying the data, prodcuing reports, etc (and possibly also allows control of the remote equipment). Can anyone recommend a good book describing an approach to developing such a software architecture, keeping it generic, which tools, languages. test methods, etc to use? (note to self: ask a similar question about possible existing frameworks)

  Hi Guys I was a bit surprised a few minutes ago when I tried to overload an Action in one of my Controllers I had public ActionResult Get() { return PartialView(/*return all things*/); } I added public ActionResult Get(int id) { return PartialView(/*return 1 thing*/); } .... and all of a sudden neither were working I fixed the issue by making 'id' nullable and getting rid of the other two methods public ActionResult Get(int? id) { if (id.HasValue) return PartialView(/*return 1 thing*/); else return PartialView(/*return everything*/); } and it worked, but my code just got a little bit ugly! Any comments or suggestions? Do I have to live with this blemish on my Controllers? Thanks Dave

• Why is sqrt() not a method on Float?

  In Ruby everything is an object. That's why I don't understand why we have the Math module. It seems to me that most (all?) of the functions in the Math module should have been methods on the numeric types like Integer, Float and so on. E.g. instead of Math.sqrt(5) it would make more sense to have 5.sqrt The same goes for sin, cos, tan, log10 and so on. Does anyone know why all these functions ended up in the Math module?

  I'm trying to detect whether an image exists on a remote server. However, I've tried several methods and can't get any of them to work. Right now I'm trying to use this: if (!CheckImageExists("http://img2.netcarshow.com/ABT-Audi_R8_2008_1024x768_wallpaper_01.jpg")) { print_r("DOES NOT EXIST"); } else { print_r("DOES EXIST"); }; function CheckImageExists($imgUrl) { if (fopen($imgUrl, "r")) { return true; } else { return false; }; }; But it returns 'true' whether the image actually exists or not (the above image should, but change it to gibberish and it still will return 'true'). I have a feeling it could be because if the URL does not exist, it redirects to the homepage of the site. But I don't know how to detect that. Thanks for any help!

So it must be UTF32, right? So, I need to check pairs of char against this range, instead of single chars, right? My questions are: How do I check for such character ranges using standard Java methods? How is it possible to define such ranges in JavaCC? JavaCC complains about \u10000 and \uEFFFF Thank you! NOTE: Don't worry, I am not trying to write an own XML-parser. I need those character ranges for other reasons.

• Hibernate object equality checking

  As far as I understand(correct me if I am wrong) Hibernate uses object reference to check the object equality. When Hibernate identifies that there are more than one objects attached to same DB record, it throws following exception. "a different object with the same identifier value was already associated with the session" My question is, does Hibernate use equal() method to check the object equality (The default equal method uses object reference)? If it is true, will overridden equal() method change the Hibernate behavior? Note: My question is not about the issues of implementing equal() or hashCode() methods in a Hibernate persisted object. • Sharing a database connection with included classes in a Sinatra application

  I'm converting a part of a rails application to its own sinatra application. It has some beefy work to do and rather than have a million helps in app.rb, I've separated some of it out into classes. Without access to rails I'm rewriting finder several methods and needing access to the database inside of my class. What's the best way to share a database connection between your application and a class? Or would you recommend pushing all database work into its own class and only having the connection established there? • CodeIgniter Validation in Library does not accept callback.

  Hey guys, my problem is the following: I am writing a login library. This library has a function _validation() and this uses the validation library to validate the data. With using normal validation methods it works just fine, but using a callback function just does not work. It is not called. I call it like this. $this->CI->form_validation->set_rules('user', 'Username', 'required|callback__check_user'); The functions name is _check_user and it uses the username _check_user($user). The function itself works fine and I can also call it in the class ($this-_check_user('username')) with a working result. I am guessing, there might be a problem because I am not workin in a controller so I have a CI instance $this-CI instead of just the original instance $this- Does anyone have a clue how to fix this? I want trigger this csv to be downloaded using Javascript. I'm considering two methods: 1) Setting location.href = /reportcsv 2) Setting an iframe url to /reportcsv Both seem to work in Safari. I was wondering if there is any difference between them, or if one is recommended over the other. My main requirement is that I don't want the user to leave the current page.

  I would like to track the value of a boolean (not Boolean) variable in the Eclips debugger. I need to know when it does change and, for this, i need to track it's value through all the execution; not only when it is in scope. More particularly i have a class (let's call it myClass) with a boolean member variable called isAvailable. My program instantiate 4 or 5 myClass objects. I am expecting that at the end of the execution the isAvailable value of all of my objects is set to true. Contrarily to my excpectation one of myClass objects has isAvailable set to false. I need to know which (in a lot of) methods is setting isAvailable to false.

  Reading a book I have found the following statement: (Object) Behaviors answer either of two questions: What does this object do (for me)? or What can I do to this object? In the case of an orange, it doesn’t do a whole lot, but we can do things to it. One behavior is that it can be eaten. In my understanding of object behaviour the statement above is correct regarding the first question and is incorrect in case of the second. However, I often see classes with methods like Orange::eat(), and this makes me uncertain about my design skills. So I would like to ask is it a design mistake to give oranges a behaviour eat? (oranges and eat are used just for example)

• Does lamda in List.ForEach leads to memory leaks and performance problems ?

  I have a problem which I could solve using something like this sortedElements.ForEach((XElement el) => PrintXElementName(el,i++)); And this means that I have in ForEach a lambda which permits using parameters like int i. I like that way of doing it, but i read somewhere that anonymous methods and delegates with lambda leads to a lot of memory leaks because each time when lambda is executed something is instantiated but is not released. Something like that. Could you please tell me if this is true in this situation and if it is why?
