• Cost of logic in a query

  I have a query that looks something like this: select xmlelement("rootNode", (case when XH.ID is not null then xmlelement("xhID", XH.ID) else xmlelement("xhID", xmlattributes('true' AS "xsi:nil"), XH.ID) end), (case when XH.SER_NUM is not null then xmlelement("serialNumber", XH.SER_NUM) else xmlelement("serialNumber", xmlattributes('true' AS "xsi:nil"), XH.SER_NUM) end), /*repeat this pattern for many more columns from the same table...*/ FROM XH WHERE XH.ID = 'SOMETHINGOROTHER' It's ugly and I don't like it, and it is also the slowest executing query (there are others of similar form, but much smaller and they aren't causing any major problems - yet). Maintenance is relatively easy as this is mostly a generated query, but my concern now is for performance. I am wondering how much of an overhead there is for all of these case expressions. To see if there was any difference, I wrote another version of this query as: select xmlelement("rootNode", xmlforest(XH.ID, XH.SER_NUM,... (I know that this query does not produce exactly the same, thing, my plan was to move the logic to PL/SQL or XSL) I tried to get execution plans for both versions, but they are the same. I'm guessing that the logic does not get factored into the execution plan. My gut tells me the second version should execute faster, but I'd like some way to prove that (other than writing a PL/SQL test function with timing statements before and after the query and running that code over and over again to get a test sample). Is it possible to get a good idea of how much the case-when will cost? Also, I could write the case-when using the decode function instead. Would that perform better (than case-statements)?

But i need the div id="page-{id}" to be invisible to begin with on pageload and then visible when its button is being hovered over. can anyone help ?

  tl:dr How can I populate jsTree based on a folder location instead of an exact XML url? I'm looking for a little direction on this project. Currently I am trying to copy file structures of hard drives as XML files and recreate them using jsTree on the webserver for a completely independent version of the file structure. I have some python script that outputs XML files that are formed to jsTree and automatically uploads to a folder on the server. The problem is now I am a little lost because I have to manually enter each XML file into jsTree code for it to display so I have multiple entries like this: $("#tree1") .jstree({ "plugins" : [ "themes", "xml_data", "ui", "search", "types" ], "xml_data" : { "ajax" : { "url" : "./XML_DATA/DRIVE1.xml" }, "xsl" : "nest" }, I see in the documentation that instead of populated by the direct file the folders are populated by "server.php" but no where in the php code does it point to any directories or files. After considering the problem I thought of a few solutions and could use some advice on them: Should I be trying to write php code to automatically look through my XML_DATA folder to upload each XML file? Should I just upload all the XML to mySQL and populate my tree based on that? Should the javascript be the code looking through the server's folder for XML files? All the XML is formed the same way but the number of XML files on the server will increase and will have to be refreshed as well as they will be overwritten with changes. Any direction would be appreciated, thanks.

  Okay, so I'm writing a utility that compares 2 XML documents using Microsoft's XML diff patch tool. • How to ignore the validation of Unknown tags ?

  One more challenge to the XSD capability,I have been sending XML files by my clients, which will be having 0 or more undefined or [call] unexpected tags (May appear in hierarchy). Well they are redundant tags for me .. so I have got to ignore their presence, but along with them there are some set of tags which are required to be validated. This is a sample XML: <root> <undefined_1>one</undefined_1> <undefined_2>two</undefined_2> <node>to_be_validated</node> <undefined_3>two</undefined_3> <undefined_4>two</undefined_4> </root> And the XSD I tried with: <xs:element name="root" type="root"></xs:element> <xs:complexType name="root"> <xs:sequence> <xs:any maxOccurs="2" minOccurs="0"/> <xs:element name="node" type="xs:string"/> <xs:any maxOccurs="2" minOccurs="0"/> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType XSD doesn't allow this, due to certain reasons. The above mentioned example is just a sample. The practical XML comes with the complex hierarchy of XML tags .. Kindly let me know if you can get a hack of it. By the way, The alternative solution is to insert XSL-transformation, before validation process. Well, I am avoiding it because I need to change the .Net code which triggers validation process, which is supported at the least by my company.

• Convert asp.net application to windows forms app

  I have written and deployed an ASP.NET application that is pretty complex. It uses XSL transformations to create web forms for a large variety of data objects. The data comes from the database as XML via a web service. Now, I need to create a Windows desktop application that will provide a small subset of the web applications functionality to a user who may not have access to the web (working in remote areas). I will provide the data syncing using the MS Sync Framework. And I will have the desktop use a local data store. I would like to use the same xslt files in the desktop app that I use in the web app for the form creation so that, if changes are made, the desktop app can update itself when it connects and syncs its data. But, I am wondering how to replicate the asp.net codebehind logic of my web app in the windows forms. If I use a browser control to render the XSLTransformation result, then how could I handle click events, etc, in the form? Also, can I launch other windows as "dialog boxes" from my windows forms (I do this in my web app using RadControls functionality)? Thanks for any advice you can give.

• Allowing Xform controls for optional XML elements

  Hi, In designing an XForm interface to an XML database (using eXist and XSLTForms), I'd like to include an input control for an optional element. The XML data records already exist and while some contain the optional element, others don't. To update a record, I'm using the existing XML record as the model instance. The problem is that the form control is not displayed when the optional element is not present, which is logical, but presents a problem when a user wants to add data to the optional element. To be more explicit, here's an example data record, data.xml: <a> <b>content</b> </a> with RNC schema: start = element a { element b { text }, element notes { text }? } XForms model: <xf:model> <xf:instance xmlns="" src="data.xml"/> <xf:submission id="save" method="post" action="update.xq" /> </xf:model> And control: <xf:input ref="/a/notes"> <xf:label>Notes (optional): </xf:label> </xf:input> The problem is that the 'Notes' input control is simply not displayed. An obvious solution is to add a trigger button to allow the user to insert the element if needed, but it is preferable to just have the input control appear, and be empty. My question is: is there some subtle combination of lesser-know attributes/binds/multiple instances/xpath expressions that will cause the control to always be displayed? Thanks

• Copy existing XML, duplicate element and modify

  Hi, I have a tricky XSL problem at the moment. I need to copy the existing XML, copy a certain element (plus its child elements) and modify the value of two child-elements. The modifications are: divide value of the 'value' element by 110 and edit the value of the 'type' element from 'normal' to 'discount'. This is currently what I have: Current XML: <dataset> <data> <prices> <price> <value>50.00</value> <type>normal</type> </price> </prices> </data> </dataset> Expected result <dataset> <data> <prices> <price> <value>50.00</value> <type>normal</type> </price> <price> <value>45.00</value> <type>discount</type> </price> </prices> </data> </dataset> Any takers? I've gotten as far as copying the desired 'price' element using copy-of, but I'm stuck as to how to modify it next.

• Passing trough a datagrid value

  I have a datagrid with 2 columns. One databound which display names and the other one is a hyperlink column. Column1 = databound column, Column2 = hyperlink column. column1: column2: --------------------- Name1 Modify Name2 Modify Next when i click on any of the values in Column2 i simply get redirected to a other page. This page contains 2 buttons/hyperlinks with Yes or No. (does not mather wich control, which one would bring the most easy to implement solution atm) When clicked on No it simply redirects back to the orignal page. Now the question is when i press "Yes" how exactly do i acces "Name1" (or Name2 if i press on the second modify)? Meaning if i press Yes i want to use this Name for certain opertions (xml). To put it short if i press on "modify" i want to be able to get that name associated with it (which is already displayed in the first bound column left of it). So the goal is to use that name in Xpath for example so i can make a query towards that node with that certain name. Hopefully this made some sence.

  Hi, I have a following xml document: <node1> <node2 a1="x1"> ... </node2> <node2 a1="x2"> ... </node2> <node2 a1="x1"> ... </node2> </node1> I want to filter out node2 when a1 = x2. The user provides the xpath and attribute values that need to tested and filtered out. I looked at some solutions in python like BeautifulSoup but they are too complicated and dont preserve the case of text. I want to keep the document same as before with some stuff filtered out. Can you recommend a simple and succinct solution? This should not be too complicated from the looks of it. The actual xml document is not as simple as above but idea is the same.

• A generic Re-usable C# Property Parser utility

  This is about a utility i have happened to write which can parse through the properties of a data contracts at runtime using reflection. The input required is a look like XPath string. since this is using reflection, you dont have to add the reference to any of your data contracts thus making pure generic and re- usable.. you can read about this and get the full c# sourcecode here. Property-Parser-A-C-utility-to-retrieve-values-from-any-Net-Data-contracts-at-runtime Now about the doubts which i have about this utility. i am using this utility enormously i many places of my code I am using Regex repetedly inside a recursion method. does this affect the memmory usage or GC collection badly ?do i have to dispose this manually. if yes how ?. The statements like obj.GetType().GetProperty() and obj.GetType().GetField() returns .net "object" which makes difficult or imposible to introduce generics here. Does this cause to have any overheads like boxing ? on an overall, please suggest to make this utility performance efficient and more light weight on memmory

I guess so seeing as it was added after the base product was released as an enhancement. But I'd be interested in hearing use cases? I used to think the same of text output. But now Im working in the public sector where older technologies abound I can see a use for text output. Its also used as a machine readable format, etc. BIP still does not support a text format from its RTF templates but its very doable using XSL templates. Back to CSV, I noticed an enhancement in the big list of new stuff in the 10.1.3.4.1 rollup. You can now generate CSV from structured data ie a data template or a SQL XML query. This piqued my interest so I ran off a data template to CSV.   Current status I've started to suspect this is not an Ubuntu issue, but related to the internet connection here at my work. I tried removing openjdk-6, but then it wanted to install openjdk-7 instead, with the same result, hanging at openjdk-7-jre-headless instead. I also tried changing servers from my local (Danish) to the main server. No luck. It's also keeping me from upgrading alle the other packages. What to do? Update After following instructions in the answer by @lpanebr, it is now stuck at the linux-firmware package. So, maybe it's a more general problem than being related to specific package(s)? Although it did download some packages without problems before getting stuck at linux-firmware.

  I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". • Apache FOP - Table top and bottom borders missing pagebreak inside table

  I am using Apache FOP to generate a PDF from a XLS FO document. I have created a test XLS FO document that contains a table with collapsed borders that with several tall rows. One of the rows starts on one page and ends on the next and this works as expected. The problem is that the bottom border of the table on the first page is missing and the top border of the table on the second pages is also missing. This works, but I need to use these functions for other things than fixing this issue so what I need to know is if there is an other sollution to the problem?

• Xml failing to deserialise

  I call a method to get my pages [see GetPages(String xmlFullFilePath)]. The FromXElement method is supposed to deserialise the LitePropertyData elements to strongly type LitePropertyData objects. Instead it fails on the following line: return (T)xmlSerializer.Deserialize(memoryStream); and gives the following error: <LitePropertyData xmlns=''> was not expected. What am I doing wrong? This specifies which browsers and versions of those browsers that the web page is expected to correctly display. Forcing a hypertext document to conform strictly to a specific W3C standard for HTML is often no simple task. In the worst case, it cannot conform without losing some aesthetics or accessibility functionality. Second, the case of HTML documents is not an isolated case. Standards for XML, XSL, JavaScript, VBScript, are analogous. Therefore, you might imagine the problems when you begin to combine these languages and formats in an HTML document. Third, there is always more than one way to skin a cat. For example, Bobby and Cynthia may flag those IMG tags that do not contain a TITLE attribute. There might be good reason that a web developer chooses not to include the title attribute. The title attribute has a limited numbers of characters and does not support carriage returns. This is a major defect in the design of this tag. In fact, before the TITLE attribute was supported, there was the ALT attribute. Most browsers support both, yet they both perform a similar function. However, both attributes share the same deficiencies. In practice, there are instances where neither attribute would be used. Instead, for example, the developer would write some JavaScript or VBScript to circumvent these deficiencies.
