• terminating java applet thread on page unload

  Hello, I have got a problem here in terminating the threads. The problem is that I am using applet thread to access JS DOM and manipulate innerHTML of a span to right the Thread Name as the innerHTML. It works fine until I keep refreshing the page but if I dont give it a sleep of like 200ms and go to another page which dont have any applet on it, it will give me an error in firebug console: document.getElementById("userName") is null What I am suspecting is, although I send an interrupt on stop and I have also tried the same by setting a flag variable of running in run while loop, the thread executes much faster than the time JVM takes to unload it and I get my page changed in browser but applet is still trying to find an element with id userName. Is that true? Is there any work around of it? Is there any way to know how many threads are running at the moment? Is there any kill all command to send on destroy()? I have searched a lot, seen all the API of java threads and applets, couldn't get this to work. • Question about how to use strong typed dataset in N-tier application for .NET

  Hello All, I need some expert advice on strong typed data sets in ADO.NET that are generated by the Visual Studio. Here are the details. Thank you in advance. I want to write a N-tier application where Presentation layer is in C#/windows forms, Business Layer is a Web service and Data Access Layer is SQL db. So, I used Visual Studio 2005 for this and created 3 projects in a solution. project 1 is the Data access layer. In this I have used visual studio data set generator to create a strong typed data set and table adapter (to test I created this on the customers table in northwind). The data set is called NorthWindDataSet and the table inside is CustomersTable. project 2 has the web service which exposes only 1 method which is GetCustomersDataSet. This uses the project1 library's table adapter to fill the data set and return it to the caller. To be able to use the NorthWindDataSet and table adapter, I added a reference to the project 1. project 3 is a win forms app and this uses the web service as a reference and calls that service to get the data set. In the process of building this application, in the PL, I added a reference to the DataSet generated above in the project 1 and in form's load I call the web service and assign the received DataSet from the web service to this dataset. But I get the error: "Cannot implicitly convert type 'PL.WebServiceLayerReference.NorthwindDataSet' to 'BL.NorthwindDataSet' e:\My Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\DataSetWebServiceExample\PL\Form1.cs". Both the data sets are same but because I added references from different locations, I am getting the above error I think. So, what I did was I added a reference to project 1 (which defines the data set) to project 3 (the UI) and used the web service to get the DataSet and assing to the right type, now when the project 3 (which has the web form) runs, I get the below runtime exception. "System.InvalidOperationException: There is an error in XML document (1, 5058). --- System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchemaException: Multiple definition of element 'http://tempuri.org/NorthwindDataSet.xsd:Customers' causes the content model to become ambiguous. A content model must be formed such that during validation of an element information item sequence, the particle contained directly, indirectly or implicitly therein with which to attempt to validate each item in the sequence in turn can be uniquely determined without examining the content or attributes of that item, and without any information about the items in the remainder of the sequence." I think this might be because of some cross referenceing errors. My question is, is there a way to use the visual studio generated DataSets in such a way that I can use the same DataSet in all layers (for reuse) but separate the Table Adapter logic to the Data Access Layer so that the front end is abstracted from all this by the web service? If I have hand write the code I loose the goodness the data set generator gives and also if there are columns added later I need to add it by hand etc so I want to use the visual studio wizard as much as possible. thanks for any help on this. sb

• Hosting Mercurial on IIS7

  Note, this might perhaps be best suited on serverfault.com, but since it is about hosting a programmer source code repository, I am not entirely sure. I'm posting here first, trusting that it'll be migrated if necessary. I'm attempting to host clones of my Mercurial repositories on my own server (I have the main repo somewhere else), and I'm attempting to set up Mercurial under IIS. I followed the guide here, but I get an error message. Solved: See bottom of this question for details. The error message is: mercurial.error.RepoError: repository /path/to/repo/or/config not found Here's what I did. I installed Mercurial 1.5.2 I created c:\inetpub\hg I downloaded the hg source as per the instructions of the webpage, and copied the hgweb.cgi file into c:\inetpub\hg (note, the webpage says hgwebdir.cgi, but this particular file does not exist, hgweb.cgi does, however, can this be the source of the problem?) I added a hgweb.config, with the following contents: [paths] repo1 = C:/hg/** [web] style = monoblue I created c:\hg, created a sub-directory test, and created a repository inside it I installed python 2.6.5, latest 2.6 version from the website (the webpage mentions I need to install the correct version or I'll get a specific error message, since I don't get an error message that looks remotely like the one mentioned, I assume that 2.6.5 is not the problem) I added a new virtual host hg.vkarlsen.no, pointing it to c:\inetpub\hg For this host, I added a script mapping under the Handler Mappings section, mapping *.cgi to c:\python26\python.exe -u %s %s as per the instructions on the website. I then tested it by navigating to http://hg.vkarlsen.no/hgweb.cgi, but I get an error message. Edit: Ok, I think I managed to get one step closer to the solution, but I'm still stumped. I realized the .cgi file is a python script file, and not something compile, so I opened it for editing, and these lines was sitting in it: # Path to repo or hgweb config to serve (see 'hg help hgweb') config = "/path/to/repo/or/config" So this was my source for the specific error message. If I change the line to this: config = "c:\\hg\\test" Then I can navigate the empty repository through the Mercurial web interface. However, I want to host multiple repositories, and seeing as the line says that I can also link to a hgweb config file, I tried this: config = "c:\\inetpub\\hg\\hgweb.config" But then I get the following error message: mercurial.error.Abort: c:\inetpub\hg\hgweb.config: not a Mercurial bundle file Exception ImportError: 'No module named shutil' in <bound method bundlerepository.__del__ of <mercurial.bundlerepo.bundlerepository object at 0x0260A110>> ignored Nothing I've tried for the config variable seems to work: config = "hgweb.config" config = "c:\\hg\\hgweb.config" various other variations I don't remember. So, still stumped, pointers anyone? Solved: I ended up having to edit the hgweb.cgi file: from: from mercurial.hgweb import hgweb, wsgicgi application = hgweb(config) to: from mercurial.hgweb import hgweb, hgwebdir, wsgicgi application = hgwebdir(config) Note the added hgwebdir parts there. Here's my hgweb.config file, located in the same directory as hgweb.cgi file: [collections] C:/hg/ = C:/hg/ [web] style = gitweb This now serves my repositories successfully. Hopefully this question will give others some information if they're stumped as I was.

• C# asp.net EF MVC postgresql error 23505: Duplicate key violates unique constraint

  EDIT: It was issue with database table - dropping and recreating table id column did the work. Problem solved. I'm trying to build web application, that is connected to postgresql database. Results are displaying in view with Kendo UI. When I'm trying to add new row (with Kendo UI 'Add new record' button), I get error 23505: 'Duplicate key violates unique constraint'. My guess is, that EF takes id to insert from the beginning, not the last one, because after 35 (it's number of rows in table) tries - and errors - adding works perfectly. Can someone help me to understand, what's wrong? • Partial view links not working in Fire Fox

  I have a MVC4 asp.net application, I have two layouts a main layout for the main page and a second layout for the nested pages. The problem I have is with the second layout, on this layout I call a partial view which has my navigation links. In IE the navigation menu displays fine and when each item is clicked it navigates as expected. However in FF when the page renders the navigation bar is displayed but it has no 'click functionality' if you will its as if its simply text. • What git branching models actually work - the final question

  In our company we have successfully deployed git and we are currently using a simple trunk/release/hotfixes branching model. However, this has it's problems, I have some key issues of confusion in the community which would be awesome to have answered here. Maybe my hopes for an Alexander stroke are too great, quite possibly I'll decompose this question into more manageable issues, but here's my first shot. Workflows / branching models - below are the three main descriptions of this I have seen, but they are partially contradicting each other or don't go far enough to sort out the subsequent issues we've run into (as described below). Thus our team so far defaults to not so great solutions. Are you doing something better? gitworkflows(7) Manual Page (nvie) A successful Git branching model (reinh) A Git Workflow for Agile Teams Merging vs rebasing (tangled vs sequential history) - the bids on this are as confusing as it gets. Should one pull --rebase or wait with merging back to the mainline until your task is finished? Personally I lean towards merging since this preserves a visual illustration of on which base a task was started and finished, and I even prefer merge --no-ff for this purpose. It has other drawbacks however. Also many haven't realized the useful property of merging - that it isn't commutative (merging a topic branch into master does not mean merging master into the topic branch). I am looking for a natural workflow - sometimes mistakes happen because our procedures don't capture a specific situation with simple rules. For example a fix needed for earlier releases should of course be based sufficiently downstream to be possible to merge upstream into all branches necessary (is the usage of these terms clear enough?). However it happens that a fix makes it into the master before the developer realizes it should have been placed further downstream, and if that is already pushed (even worse, merged or something based on it) then the option remaining is cherry-picking, with it's associated perils... What simple rules like such do you use? Also in this is included the awkwardness of one topic branch necessarily excluding other topic branches (assuming they are branched from a common baseline). Developers don't want to finish a feature to start another one feeling like the code they just wrote is not there anymore How to avoid creating merge conflicts (due to cherry-pick)? What seems like a sure way to create a merge conflict is to cherry-pick between branches, they can never be merged again? Would applying the same commit in revert (how to do this?) in either branch possibly solve this situation? This is one reason I do not dare to push for a largely merge-based workflow. How to decompose into topical branches? - We realize that it would be awesome to assemble a finished integration from topic branches, but often work by our developers is not clearly defined (sometimes as simple as "poking around") and if some code has already gone into a "misc" topic, it can not be taken out of there again, according to the question above? How do you work with defining/approving/graduating/releasing your topic branches? Proper procedures like code review and graduating would of course be lovely, but we simply cannot keep things untangled enough to manage this - any suggestions? integration branches, illustration please? • Invoice Discount: Negative line items vs Internal properties

  Should discount on invoice items and entire invoices be negative line items or separate properties of an invoice? In a similar question, Should I incorporate list of fees/discounts into an order class or have them be itemlines, the asker focuses more on orders than invoices (which is a slightly different business entity). Discount is proposed to be separate from order items since it is not equivalent to a fee or product and may have different reporting requirements. Hence, discount should not simply be a negative line item. Previously I have successfully used negative line items to clearly indicate and calculate discount, but this feels inflexible and inaccurate from a business perspective. Now I am opting to add discount to each line item, along with an invoice-wide discount. Is this the right way to do it? Should each item have its own discount amount and percentage?   I have a simple task. There are two classes : Ticket and Date. Ticket contains event, event place and event date which is a Date object. I also need to provide a move() method for Date object, so I used Calendar and Calendar's add(). Everything looks fine apart of the output. I constantly get 5,2,1 as the date's day,month,year. • Databinding to ObservableCollection in a different UserControl - how to preserve current selections?

  Scope of question expanded on 2010-03-25 I ended up figuring out my problem, but here's a new problem that came up as a result of solving the original question, because I want to be able to award the bounty to someone!!! Once I figured out my problem, I soon found out that when the ObservableCollection updates, the databound ComboBox has its contents repopulated, but most of the selections have been blanked out. I assume that in this case, MVVM is going to make it difficult for me to remember the last selected item. I have an idea, but it seems a little nasty. I'll award the bounty to whomever comes up with a nice solution for this! Question re-written on 2010-03-24 I have two UserControls, where one is a dialog that has a TabControl, and the other is one that appears within said TabControl. I'll just call them CandyDialog and CandyNameViewer for simplicity's sake. There's also a data management class called Tracker that manages information storage, which for all intents and purposes just exposes a public property that is an ObservableCollection. As long as CandyNames is populated first, and then the consumer UserControl is displayed, all of the names are there. I obviously don't get any errors in the Output Window or anything like that. The issue I have is that when the ObservableCollection is modified from the model, those changes are not reflected in the consumer UserControl! I've never had this problem before; all of my previous uses of ObservableCollection updated fine, although in those cases I wasn't databinding across assemblies. Although I am currently only adding and removing candy names to/from the ObservableCollection, at a later date I will likely also allow renaming from the model side. Is there something I did wrong? Is there a good way to actually debug this? Reed Copsey indicates here that inter-UserControl databinding is possible. Unfortunately, my favorite Bea Stollnitz article on WPF databinding debugging doesn't suggest anything that I could use for this particular problem.

  When using sfDoctrineGuard plugin, it automatically generates the backend administration functionality where I can edit users of the system and assign them permissions. So I visit http://.../backend_dev.php/sf_guard_user/:id/edit where I am presented with the user's information including the available permissions to select. By default the permissions are shown as a multiple select box, HTML follows: <select name="sf_guard_user[permissions_list][]" multiple="multiple" id="sf_guard_user_permissions_list"> <option value="1">Permission1</option> <option value="2">Permission2</option> <option value="3">Permission3</option> <option value="4">Permission4</option> </select> What I would prefer is a list of checkboxes. Is this the correct way to go about this work? I also need to integrate my sfGuardUserProfile model into the edit user page (same as above), I read somwhere that editing the generator.yml file for the sfGuardUser plugin module and simply adding the field names from the sfGuardUserProfile table would make it work, but sadly it doesn't. • Calling webservice from WCF service

  I am having an issue consuming a webservice (c#.net) from a WCF service. The error i am getting is EndPointNotFoundException "TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it" I wrote a unit test to check if i could send a request to the web service and it worked fine [The unit test is using the same binding configuration as my WCF service] The web service and WCF service (client) have basichttp binding. Did anyone had similar kind of issue calling a webservice from a WCF service? • Django ImageField issue with JPEG's

  I am having a major issue with PIL (Python Image Library) in Django and have jumpped through a lot of hoops and have thus far not been able to figure out what the root of the issue is. The problem essentially breaks down to not being able to upload JPEG images through the ImageField in the Django admin. But the issue is not as simple as installing libjpeg. First, I installed PIL (through Buildout) and realized once it was installed that I had not installed libjpeg because JPEG support was not available. Having not setup the server myself, I just assumed that it was not installed and I compiled libjpeg 8 from the source. This ended up in my /usr/local/lib/ directory. I cleared out my Buildout files and rebuilt everything. This time when PIL compiled I had JPEG support. But I went to the Django Admin and tried to upload a JPEG though an ImageField with no luck. I got the "Upload a valid image. The file you uploaded was either not an image or a corrupted image" error. Just as a test I opened up a the Djano shell and ran the following: > import Image > i = Image.open( "/absolute_path/file.jpg" ) > print i <JpegImagePlugin.JpegImageFile image mode=RGB size=940x375 at 0x7F908C529BD8> This runs with no errors and shows that PIL is able to open JPEG's. After doing some reading, I come across this thread: Is it possible to control which libraries apache uses? Looks like PHP also uses libjpeg and is loading before Django, and therefor loading libjpeg 6.2 before. This is show when using lsof: COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME apache2 2561 www-data mem REG 202,1 146032 639276 /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62.0.0 So my thought is that I should be using libjpeg 6.2. So I removed libjpeg located in my /usr/local/lib directory. After rereading the PIL installation instructions, I realized that I might not have the dev/header files for libjpeg that PIL needs. So I also uninstalled libjpeg using the aptitude uninstaller (sudo aptitude remove libjpeg62). Then to ensure that I got the header files that PIL needed I installed libjpeg using aptitude: (sudo aptget install libjpeg62-dev). From here I cleaned out my Buildout directory, and reran Buildout, which in turn reinstalled PIL. Once again, I have JPEG support, now using the libjpeg62. So I go to test in the Django Admin. Still no JPEG support. So I wanted to test JPEG support in general and see if the exception was not handled, what kind of error it would throw. So in my homepage view I added the following code to open a JPEG image: import Image i = Image.open( "/absolute_path/file.jpg" ) v = i.verify() Then I pass i to the HTML view just to easily see the output. I deploy these changes to the server and restart. I am surprised not to see an error and get the following output: {{ i }} - <JpegImagePlugin.JpegImageFile image mode=RGB size=940x375 at 0x7F908C529BD8> {{ v }} - None So at this point I am really confused: Why can I successfully open a JPEG while the admin cannot? Am I missing something, is this not an issue with libjpeg? If not an issue with libjpeg, why can I upload a PNG with no issues? • Parsing a Directory of files - Check for a String

  This is my first post here so kindly pardon any mistakes that I have. I'm still learning to find my way around Stack Exchange. I am trying to write a Java program that tries to scan a Directory full of either .txt,.rtf or.doc files(and none other). The aim is to search all the files in the directory, and find out if a particular string exists in the file. If it does, it returns the string and the filename that it found the string in. The aim of this program is, it is a project for school wherein the program scans the personal folders of call center employees to check if they have stored any CC/DC nos and if yes, report the folder name - to reduce CC fraud. The search function was fairly straight forward and works when I individually specify the filename. However, the searching the directory and passing the files to the search function has me stumped. • NSURLConnection not "firing" until UITableView scrolls..

  Hi, I've got a UITableView that loads an image asynchronously and places it in the UITableViewCell once it's loaded (I'm using almost the exact same code as in the "LazyTableImages" tutorial). This works fine for all images when I scroll the table, but it's not loading the images that are first in the view. The code is definitely working fine as the class that actually sends the NSURLConnection request is being called correctly (I added an NSLog and it reached the console). The NSURLConnection is just not calling the delegate methods (didReceiveData, connectionDidFinishLoading, etc).   Finite state machine A deterministic finite state machine is a simple computation model, widely used as an introduction to automata theory in basic CS courses. It is a simple model, equivalent to regular expression, which determines of a certain input string is Accepted or Rejected. Leaving some formalities aside, A run of a finite state machine is composed of: alphabet, a set of characters. states, usually visualized as circles. One of the states must be the start state. Some of the states might be accepting, usually visualized as double circles. transitions, usually visualized as directed arches between states, are directed links between states associated with an alphabet letter. input string, a list of alphabet characters. A run on the machine begins at the starting state. Each letter of the input string is read; If there is a transition between the current state and another state which corresponds to the letter, the current state is changed to the new state. After the last letter was read, if the current state is an accepting state, the input string is accepted. If the last state was not an accepting state, or a letter had no corresponding arch from a state during the run, the input string is rejected. Note: This short descruption is far from being a full, formal definition of a FSM; Wikipedia's fine article is a great introduction to the subject. Example For example, the following machine tells if a binary number, read from left to right, has an even number of 0s: The alphabet is the set {0,1}. The states are S1 and S2. • ObjectContext.SaveChanges() fails with SQL CE

  I am creating a model-first Entity Framework 4 app that uses SQL CE as its data store. All is well until I call ObjectContext.SaveChanges() to save changes to the entities in the model. At that point, SaveChanges() throws a System.Data.UpdateException, with an inner exception message that reads as follows: Server-generated keys and server-generated values are not supported by SQL Server Compact. I am completely puzzled by this message. Any idea what is going on and how to fix it? Thanks.
