• I can learn either C or Java, which one should I choose first? Should I take them concurrently?

  I realize this is a subject of hot debate, but I'm interested in opinions that relate to my specific situation. I want to learn the basics and fundamentals of programming, so I'm already taking a college course in general programming concepts. It isn't covering a specific language, but it's giving me a solid foundation that I can build upon when I move on to a class that teaches a specific language. My two options for a specific language are Java and C because those are the two languages taught at the college I want to take classes from. What I want to do is learn a complex language so that I can apply that knowledge to languages that I use, or will eventually use, in my current job building web pages: XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, XML, ActionScript. I'm not necessariy interested in becoming a Java developer or a C developer in the immediate future, but I do have aspirations of developing web applications and iPod/iPhone applications. So, basically, I'm looking for answers to these questions and the reasoning behind them: Do I take the introductory course in Java first, and then take the intro course in C, or Do I take C first and then take Java? Is there any reason not to take them concurrently? Should I skip C altogether as Java covers everything I need to know? EDIT: Thanks everyone for your thoughtful and insightful responses.

• Why is my program getting slower and slower ?

  I'm using the program to send data from database to the Excel file . It works fine at the beginning and then becomes more and more slowly,finally it run out of the memory and the following error ocurrs: "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space...". The problem can be resolved by adding the jvm heap sapce.But the question is that it spends too much time to run out the program. After several minutes,it finished a loop with 4 seconds which can be finished with 0.5 seconds at the beginning . I can't found a solution to make it always run in a certain speed. Is it my code problem? Any clues on this? • Is there programming language with better approach for switch's break statements ?

  It's the same syntax in a way too many languages: switch (someValue) { case OPTION_ONE: case OPTION_LIKE_ONE: case OPTION_ONE_SIMILAR: doSomeStuff1(); break; // EXIT the switch case OPTION_TWO_WITH_PRE_ACTION: doPreActionStuff2(); // the default is to CONTINUE to next case case OPTION_TWO: doSomeStuff2(); break; // EXIT the switch case OPTION_THREE: doSomeStuff3(); break; // EXIT the switch } Now all you know that break statements are required, because the switch will continue to the next case when break statement is missing. We have an example of that with OPTION_LIKE_ONE, OPTION_ONE_SIMILAR and OPTION_TWO_WITH_PRE_ACTION. The problem is that we only need this "skip to next case" very very very rarely. And very often we put break at the end of case. It very easy for a beginner to forget about it.   Unfortunately my last question was closed, so I reformulated the question: I know this question was here a lot of times and can't be answered at all, but im not looking for a single name, but rather for an advice in my situation. I learned programming with Java and now I'm developing in Java for more or less 5 years (at the university) and I thinks my programming skills their are really ok/average. I have also small experience in C/C++ and C#. Now I have some spare time and I'd like to learn a new language or deepen the knowledge of Java/C/C++. But how to choose the right language to learn? I'd like to learn a language which will be usefull in the future concerning working in a software development business? I know there is no single answer, but I'm sure you could mention some languages that are more usefull than others. And what's the best way to learn such a language efficiently (bearing in mind that one has already learned some other languages)? Just doing tutorials? Or trying to implement a project? Trying to move a Java project to the new language?

  I would like to add Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin New Experience Input from command line. I tried the following command: reg add "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 3 /d 00000804 except that the keyboard defaults to Chinese Simplified - US keyboard. Does anyone know how if there is any other registry key I need to change in order to get the New Experience Input to show up in the Language Bar?

• Can I switch input methods while Caps Lock is being held down on Windows?

  On my Linux computer, my keyboard switches from English to Serbian when I hold the Caps Lock key. For example, to write c all I have to do is hold Caps Lock, and press the key where c is on the Serbian keyboard (in this case, they key is ; on the English keyboard). When I release Caps Lock, the keyboard "switches back" to English, so that if I press ; I get ; as desired. Super useful. Please note that I know how to change the keyboard layout. I want to use Caps Lock as a modifier key to change the language only while being held down! Is there a way to replicate this behavior on Windows 7 or Windows 8?

  I use a Mac with French keyboard, and I have installed a Windows 7 as virtual machine. Now I would like to type Chinese in this Windows 7. The normal input method for Chinese within Windows 7 allows me to input Chinese, but does not work perfectly, because it does not recognize I am using a French keyboard - it presumes I am using a English keybord... So for some keys, what I type on the keybord is not what the input method gives on the screen... Could anyone help on this?

• Forbid language switch for certain application(s)

  I have a problem of accidental input language switch. I tried many different settings in order to not do it - change hotkey, install some software (Key Switcher, Keyboard Ninja, Punto Switcher)... But nothing helped. I used to certain hotkey (Ctrl+Shift). Any other hotkey make me even more suffer. The software s found has no feature to avoid accidental switches. What I want is to find a piece of software which can stick "English US" input language to my "Visual Studio". And any Ctrl+Shift pushes inside VS should not lead to language switch. Have any ideas?

But she's from a country with a right-to-left language, and she wants to be able to type in her own language from right-to-left. Going to the control panel and adding a keyboard on her language did half of the trick. She can type in her language but on a left-to-right way. Is it possible to enable the cursor to go on the other direction?

• My windows keyboard is being "clever" with the quote keys - how can I stop it?

  I'm using windows 7 on a laptop. On the laptop keyboard, for some reason, the quote key (which has both double and single quote on it) is doing some "clever" annoying things: When I press single-quote (or double-quote), windows doesn't send any characters until I press it twice (resulting in '' or "") When I press it before a vowel, I get some kind of accented character. As I usually only write English, this is annoying. The backtick/tilde key is subject to similar behaviour. I have not attempted to set up my computer to process anything other than English. My keyboard appears to be (in so far as these things are standard on laptops) a standard US qwerty keyboard. How can I stop this happening?

  Before Windows 8, the Alt+Shift shortcut changed the input method (keyboard layout) for the current app. This permitted to map an input method to each app. For example I could keep the default layout for my apps where I write in english and switch to a french layout in apps where I write in french. This was working great: each app had his keyboard layout. Now with Windows 8 the Alt+Shift key has a global behavior for all applications. This meens I have to change my input method almost each time I change from app to app. Is there a way to restore the pre-Windows-8 behavior? Or is there another shortcut?

My question is why did Dylan fail when Objective-C, Ruby and even Scheme have had more success?
