  • Configuring Warden for use in RSpec controller specs

    - by Chris Peters
I was able to use Devise's sign_in method to log in a user in my controller specs. But now that I'm removing Devise from my application, I'm not quite sure how to get similar functionality working with just Warden on its own. How should I go about setting up spec/spec_helper.rb and related spec/support/*.rb files to get Warden running within controller specs sufficiently? I've tried setting up a file at spec/support/warden.rb with these contents: RSpec.configure do |config| config.include Warden::Test::Helpers config.after do Warden.test_reset! end end Then I have before calls similar to this to authenticate a user factory: before { login_as FactoryGirl.create(:user) } But here is the error that I keep seeing: NameError: undefined method `user' for nil:NilClass This error traces back to my authenticate_user! method in the controller: def authenticate_user! redirect_to login_path, notice: "You need to sign in or sign up before continuing." if env['warden'].user.nil? end I'd appreciate any guidance that anyone could provide.

  • How do I get the path of the current executed file in python?

    - by Sorin Sbarnea
This may seam a newbie question but it is not. It looks that common approaches are not always working: Currently I know only two options but none of them looks to work an all cases. sys.argv[0] This means using path = os.path.abspath(os.path.dirname(sys.argv[0])) but this does not work if you are running from another python script from another directory, and this can really happen in real life. __file__ this means that path = os.path.abspath(os.path.dirname(__file__)) but I found that this doesn't work: py2exe that doesn't have a __file__ attribute but there is an workaround. when you run from IDLE with execute() there is no __file__ attribute OS X 10.6 where I get NameError: global name '__file__' is not defined Related questions with incomplete answers: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1296501/python-find-path-to-file-being-run http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1483827/python-path-to-current-file-depends-on-how-i-execute-the-program http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2259503/how-to-know-the-path-of-the-running-script-in-python http://stackoverflow.com/questions/509742/python-chdir-to-dir-the-py-script-is-in

  • Semicolon in object variable name

    - by milkfilk
There's a common LDAP attribute called userCertificate;binary. It actually has a semi-colon in the attribute name. In ruby, I turn an LDAP entry into a OpenStruct object called 'struct'. struct.class = OpenStruct But of course ruby thinks it's an end-of-line character. ? struct.userCertificate;binary NameError: undefined local variable or method `binary' for main:Object from (irb):52 from :0 IRB knows that the local variable is there, because it gives me struct.userCertificate;binary from the tab auto-completion. I can also see the class variable when calling struct.methods on it. struct.methods = ... "send", "methods", "userCertificate;binary=", "hash", ... It's definitely there, I can see the contents if I print the whole variable to_s(). But how can I access the local variable when it has a semicolon in it? I have workarounds for this but I thought it was an interesting problem to post.

  • Proper way to reload a python module from the console

    - by ensnare
I'm debugging from the python console and would like to reload a module every time I make a change so I don't have to exit the console and re-enter it. I'm doing: >>> from project.model.user import * >>> reload(user) but I receive: >>>NameError: name 'user' is not defined What is the proper way to reload the entire user class? Is there a better way to do this, perhaps auto-updating while debugging? Thanks.

  • Optional parens in Ruby for method with uppercase start letter?

    - by RasmusKL
I just started out using IronRuby (but the behaviour seems consistent when I tested it in plain Ruby) for a DSL in my .NET application - and as part of this I'm defining methods to be called from the DSL via define_method. However, I've run into an issue regarding optional parens when calling methods starting with an uppercase letter. Given the following program: class DemoClass define_method :test do puts "output from test" end define_method :Test do puts "output from Test" end def run puts "Calling 'test'" test() puts "Calling 'test'" test puts "Calling 'Test()'" Test() puts "Calling 'Test'" Test end end demo = DemoClass.new demo.run Running this code in a console (using plain ruby) yields the following output: ruby .\test.rb Calling 'test' output from test Calling 'test' output from test Calling 'Test()' output from Test Calling 'Test' ./test.rb:13:in `run': uninitialized constant DemoClass::Test (NameError) from ./test.rb:19:in `<main>' I realize that the Ruby convention is that constants start with an uppercase letter and that the general naming convention for methods in Ruby is lowercase. But the parens are really killing my DSL syntax at the moment. Is there any way around this issue?

I am also unsure of whether or not my CSS tags are correct. Thanks!

  • Globals across modules

    - by Coder1
Wow, this seems so basic, but I can't get it to work. All I need to do is store a global dict which can be accessed and modified from other modules & threads. What's the "best practices" way of achieving this? test.py import testmodule class MyClassA(): def __init__(self, id): self.id = id if __name__ == '__main__': global classa_dict classa_dict = {} classa_dict[1] = MyClassA(1) classa_dict[2] = MyClassA(2) testing = testmodule.TestModule() testmodule.py class TestModule(): def __init__(self): global classa_dict print classa_dict[2] output $ python test.py Traceback (most recent call last): File "test.py", line 13, in <module> testing = testmodule.TestModule() File "/path/to/project/testmodule.py", line 4, in __init__ print classa_dict[2] NameError: global name 'classa_dict' is not defined

  • How to validate inclusion of time zone?

Thank you.

  • How do you extend a Ruby module with macro-like metaprogramming methods?

    - by Ian Terrell
Consider the following extension (the pattern popularized by several Rails plugins over the years): module Extension def self.included(recipient) recipient.extend ClassMethods recipient.class_eval { include InstanceMethods } end module ClassMethods def macro_method puts "Called macro_method within #{self.name}" end end module InstanceMethods def instance_method puts "Called instance_method within #{self.object_id}" end end end If you wished to expose this to every class, you can do the following: Object.send :include, Extension Now you can define any class and use the macro method: class FooClass macro_method end #=> Called macro_method within FooClass And instances can use the instance methods: FooClass.new.instance_method #=> Called instance_method within 2148182320 But even though Module.is_a?(Object), you cannot use the macro method in a module: module FooModule macro_method end #=> undefined local variable or method `macro_method' for FooModule:Module (NameError) This is true even if you explicitly include the original Extension into Module with Module.send(:include, Extension). How do you add macro like methods to Ruby modules?

I have the following program. module C def self.included(base) base.extend(ClassMethods) end module ClassMethods def test_for class_eval <<-DEFINECLASSMETHODS def self.my_method(param_a) puts "SELF is: #{self.inspect}" puts param_a puts "#{param_a}" end DEFINECLASSMETHODS end end end class A include C end class B < A test_for end when I run B.new.my_method("aaa"), I got this error NameError: undefined local variable or method `param_a' for B:Class I am quite confused. I define param_a as a local variable in class method my_method, puts param_a runs good, and will output the "aaa". however, puts "#{param_a}" output that error. why? Can anyone explain this?

  • RSpec "undefined local variable or method `user'"

    - by Justin
I have the following test written in RSpec: describe '#create' do ... it 'redirects users to profile page' do response.should redirect_to user_path(user) end ... ... And the following in my UsersController: def create @user = User.new(params[:user]) if @user.save redirect_to user_path(@user) end end Does anyone know why this is returning the following error: NameError: undefined local variable or method 'user' I also tried changing this to be root_url in both cases instead of user_path(user) and it gave a different error saying: Expected response to be a <:redirect>, but was <200> Does anyone know what the issue might be? I have double-checked my code and have seen similar questions posted online, but haven't been able to find a solution. Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Is there a way to accept '%' as part of input that works both in python 2.6 & 3.0?

    - by bug11
In 2.6, if I needed to accept input that allowed a percent sign (such as "foo % bar"), I used raw_input() which worked as expected. In 3.0, input() accomplishes that same (with raw_input() having left the building). As an exercise, I'm hoping that I can have a backward-compatible version that will work with both 2.6 and 3.0. When I use input() in 2.6 and enter "foo % bar", the following error is returned: File "<string>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name "foo" is not defined ...which is expected. Anyway to to accomplish acceptance of input containing a percent sign that works in both 2.6 and 3.0? Thx.

  • Puppet Decentralized Setup

    - by paul.tw
I want to migrate my existing Puppet setup from master/client to a decentralized solution. I know other solutions, such as Ansible are easier to setup for that purpose, but I really want to stay with Puppet. I found "supply_drop"(https://github.com/pitluga/supply_drop) on github, so I followed the instructions and did the following: rvm gemset create testing rvm use 1.9.3@testing gem install supply_drop The output is the following: [m@ms-MacBook-Pro:~ $ irb 1.9.3-p547 :001 require 'supply_drop' NameError: uninitialized constant Capistrano from /Users/m/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p547@testing/gems/supply_drop-0.17.0/lib/supply_drop/tasks.rb:1:in `' from /Users/m/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p547/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:55:in `require' from /Users/m/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p547/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:55:in `require' from /Users/m/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p547@testing/gems/supply_drop-0.17.0/lib/supply_drop.rb:10:in `' from /Users/m/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p547/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:135:in `require' from /Users/m/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p547/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:135:in `rescue in require' from /Users/m/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p547/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:144:in `require' from (irb):1 from /Users/m/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p547/bin/irb:12:in `' Since that doesn't work without problems, I was wondering which alternatives are there available to do the same. • Getting fields_for and accepts_nested_attributes_for to work with a belongs_to relationship

    - by Billy Gray
I cannot seem to get a nested form to generate in a rails view for a belongs_to relationship using the new accepts_nested_attributes_for facility of Rails 2.3. I did check out many of the resources available and it looks like my code should be working, but fields_for explodes on me, and I suspect that it has something to do with how I have the nested models configured. The error I hit is a common one that can have many causes: '@account[owner]' is not allowed as an instance variable name Here are the two models involved: class Account < ActiveRecord::Base # Relationships belongs_to :owner, :class_name => 'User', :foreign_key => 'owner_id' accepts_nested_attributes_for :owner has_many :users end class User < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :account end Perhaps this is where I am doing it 'rong', as an Account can have an 'owner', and may 'users', but a user only has one 'account', based on the user model account_id key. This is the view code in new.html.haml that blows up on me: - form_for :account, :url => account_path do |account| = account.text_field :name - account.fields_for :owner do |owner| = owner.text_field :name And this is the controller code for the new action: class AccountsController < ApplicationController # GET /account/new def new @account = Account.new end end When I try to load /account/new I get the following exception: NameError in Accounts#new Showing app/views/accounts/new.html.haml where line #63 raised: @account[owner] is not allowed as an instance variable name If I try to use the mysterious 'build' method, it just bombs out in the controller, perhaps because build is just for multi-record relationships: class AccountsController < ApplicationController # GET /account/new def new @account = Account.new @account.owner.build end end You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! The error occurred while evaluating nil.build If I try to set this up using @account.owner_attributes = {} in the controller, or @account.owner = User.new, I'm back to the original error, "@account[owner] is not allowed as an instance variable name". Does anybody else have the new accepts_nested_attributes_for method working with a belongs_to relationship? Is there something special or different you have to do? All the official examples and sample code (like the great stuff over at Ryans Scraps) is concerned with multi-record associations.

  • Rspec2, Rails3, Authlogic: Can't run specs

When I do rspec spec in my rails project, I get No examples were matched. However, the rails 3 environment.rb looks way different (there is no config code block, so putting it in arbitrarily causes an error where config is not defined). So my questions are 1) Do I actually have to put the gem config anywhere? I looked at https://github.com/trevmex/authlogic_rails3_example/ and it seems he didn't put it anywhere. 2) Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong in terms of rspec? • How to use Sprockets Rails plugin on Heroku?

    - by Kevin
Hi, I just deployed my Rails app to Heroku, but the Javascripts that were using Sprockets plugin don't work. I understood that, because my Heroku app is read-only, Sprockets won't work. I've found this sprockets_on_heroku plugin that should do the work, but I don't really get how to use it : I added config.gem sprockets in config/environment.rb I added sprockets in my .gems file I pushed these on Heroku and Sprockets was successfully installed I locally ran script/plugin install git://github.com/jeffrydegrande/sprockets_on_heroku.git and the plugin was successfully installed Nothing changed on Heroku, so I tried to install the plugin on Heroku with heroku plugins:install git://github.com/jeffrydegrande/sprockets_on_heroku.git, which returned sprockets_on_heroku installedbut then, a heroku restartor a heroku pluginscommand would return this: ~/.heroku/plugins/sprockets_on_heroku/init.rb:1: uninitialized constant ActionController (NameError) from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:25:in `load' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:25:in `load!' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:22:in `each' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:22:in `load!' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/command.rb:14:in `run' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/heroku:14 from /opt/local/bin/heroku:19:in `load' from /opt/local/bin/heroku:19 What should I do? • Python class variables not defined with called from outside module

    - by Jimmy
I am having some issues with calling a function outside of a module. The scenario is I have a small class library that is using turtle to do some drawing, the function within the module calls the classes also within the module and draws things, etc. This all works fine and dandy when I call the function from within the same file, but if I have another file and call myLib.scene() I get variable undefined errors. Code examples: a class class Rectangle(object): def __init__(self, pen, height=100, width=100, fillcolor=''): self.pen = pen self.height = height self.width = width self.fillcolor = fillcolor def draw(self, x, y): '''draws the rectangle at coordinates x and y''' self.pen.goto(x, y) if self.fillcolor: self.pen.fillcolor(self.fillcolor) self.pen.fill(True) self.pen.down() for i in range(0,4): self.pen.forward(self.height if i%2 else self.width) self.pen.left(90) and the calling function is this def scene(pen): rect = Rectangle(pen) rect.draw(100,100) when I put the line scene(turtle.Turtle()) into the same file I have no issues, the rectangle is drawn and everyone goes home happy. However, if I try to call it from a separate python file like so: myLib.scene(turtle.Turtle()) I get an error: NameError: global name 'pen' is not defined, in the for loop of my draw method. Even if the line above is in the same file it still bombs out. What is going on?

  • Com server build using Python on 64-bit Windows 7 machine

    - by Vijayendra Bapte
Original post is here: http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/2010-December/011011.html I am using: OS: 64 bit Windows 7 Professional Python: python-2.7.1.amd64 Python win32 extensions: pywin32-214.win-amd64-py2.7 Py2exe: py2exe-0.6.9.win64-py2.7.amd64 I am trying to build icon overlay for Windows. It has worked fine on 32 bit Windows but not working on 64 bit Windows 7. Here are the Python modules I have created for testing: test_icon_overlay.py: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0002.obj ) com server created in Python for icon overlay which adds check mark overlay icon(C:\icons\test.ico) on "C:\icons" folder setup_VI.py: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0003.obj ) setup file which creates test_icon_overlay.dll for distribution. icons.zip: ( http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-win32/attachments/20101229/bb8c78a4/attachment-0001.zip ) for testing you should extract icons.zip inside C:\ Icon overlay appears on C:\icons folder when I execute python test_icon_overlay.py on Windows command prompt and restarts explorer.exe. But its not working with the dll file created using setup_VI.py I have created dll file using python setup_VI.py py2exe and then tried to register it using regsvr32 test_icon_overlay.dll. Registration fails with windows error message Error 0x80040201 while registering shell extension. Then I turned on logger in Python27/Lib/site-packages/py2exe/boot_com_servers.py and here is the traceback which I am getting in comerror.txt on regsvr32 test_icon_overlay.dll PATH is ['C:\\root\\avalon\\module\\sync\\python\\src\\dist\\library.zip'] Traceback (most recent call last): File "boot_com_servers.py", line 37, in <module> pywintypes.error: (126, 'GetModuleFileName', 'The specified module could not be found.') Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'DllRegisterServer' is not defined Looks like there might be a problem with win32api.GetModuleFileName(sys.frozendllhandle) or with the dll build on 64-bit Windows 7. Also, I saw that installation of pywin32-214.win-amd64-py2.7 on 64-bit Windows 7 finish with the error message: Snapshot close failed in file object destructor: sys.excepthook is missing lost sys.stderr Is there anything which I am doing wrong? Any help on this is highly appreciated.

  • Ruby: what is the pitfall in this simple code excerpt that tests variable existence

    - by zipizap
I'm starting with Ruby, and while making some test samples, I've stumbled against an error in the code that I don't understand why it happens. The code pretends to tests if a variable finn is defined?() and if it is defined, then it increments it. If it isn't defined, then it will define it with value 0 (zero). As the code threw an error, I started to decompose it in small pieces and run it, to better trace where the error was comming from. The code was run in IRB irb 0.9.5(05/04/13), using ruby 1.9.1p378 First I certify that the variable finn is not yet defined, and all is ok: ?> finn NameError: undefined local variable or method `finn' for main:Object from (irb):134 from /home/paulo/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin/irb:15:in `<main>' >> Then I certify that the following inline-condition executes as expected, and all is ok: ?> ((defined?(finn)) ? (finn+1):(0)) => 0 And now comes the code that throws the error: ?> finn=((defined?(finn)) ? (finn+1):(0)) NoMethodError: undefined method `+' for nil:NilClass from (irb):143 from /home/paulo/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin/irb:15:in `<main>' I was expecting that the code would not throw any error, and that after executing the variable finn would be defined with a first value of 0 (zero). But instead, the code thows the error, and finn get defined but with a value of nil. >> finn => nil Where might the error come from?!? Why does the inline-condition work alone, but not when used for the finn assignment? Any help apreciated :)

  • Ruby on Rails ActiveRecord/Include/Associations can't get my query to work

    - by Cypher
I just started learning Rails and I'm just trying to set up query via associations. All the queries I try to write seem to be doing bizzare things and end up trying to query two tables parsed together with an '_' as one table. I have no clue why this would ever happen My tables are as follows: schools: id name variables: id name type var_entries: id variable_id entry school_entries: id school_id var_entry_id my rails association tables are $local = { :adapter => "mysql", :host => "localhost", :port => "3306".to_i, :database => "spy_2", :username =>"root", :password => "vertrigo" } class School < ActiveRecord::Base establish_connection $local has_many :school_entries has_many :var_entries, :through => school_entries end class Variable < ActiveRecord::Base establish_connection $local has_many :var_entries has_many :school_entries, :through => :var_entries end class VarEntry < ActiveRecord::Base establish_connection $local has_many_and_belongs_to :school_entries belongs_to :variables end class SchoolEntry < ActiveRecord::Base establish_connection $local belongs_to :school has_many :var_entries end I want to do this sql query: SELECT school_id, variable_id,rank FROM school_entries, variables, var_entries, schools WHERE var_entries.variable_id = variables.id AND school_entries.var_entry_id = var_entries.id AND schools.id = school_entries.school_id AND variables.type = 'number'; and put it into Rails notation: here is one of my many failed attempts schools = VarEntry.all(:include => [:school_entries, :variables], :conditions => "variables.type = 'number'") the error: 'const_missing': uninitialized constant VarEntry::Variables (NameError) if i remove variables schools = VarEntry.all(:include => [:school_entries, :variables], :conditions => "type = 'number'") the error is: Mysql::Error: Unkown column 'type' in 'where clause': SELECT * FROM 'var_entries' WHERE (type=number) (ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid) Can anyone tell me where I'm going horribly wrong?
