  • Why is Double.Parse so slow?

    - by alexhildyard
I was recently investigating a bottleneck in one of my applications, which read a CSV file from disk using a TextReader a line at a time, split the tokens, called Double.Parse on each one, then shunted the results into an object list. I was surprised to find it was actually the Double.Parse which seemed to be taking up most of the time.Googling turned up this, which is a little unfocused in places but throws out some excellent ideas:It makes more sense to work with binary format directly, rather than coerce strings into doublesThere is a significant performance improvement in composing doubles directly from the byte stream via long intermediariesString.Split is inefficient on fixed length recordsIn fact it turned out that my problem was more insidious and also more mundane -- a simple case of bad data in, bad data out. Since I had been serialising my Doubles as strings, when I inadvertently divided by zero and produced a "NaN", this of course was serialised as well without error. And because I was reading in using Double.Parse, these "NaN" fields were also (correctly) populating real Double objects without error. The issue is that Double.Parse("NaN") is incredibly slow. In fact, it is of the order of 2000x slower than parsing a valid double. For example, the code below gave me results of 357ms to parse 1000 NaNs, versus 15ms to parse 100,000 valid doubles.            const int invalid_iterations = 1000;            const int valid_iterations = invalid_iterations * 100;            const string invalid_string = "NaN";            const string valid_string = "3.14159265";            DateTime start = DateTime. Now;                        for (int i = 0; i < invalid_iterations; i++)            {                double invalid_double = Double.Parse(invalid_string);            }            Console.WriteLine(String.Format("{0} iterations of invalid double, time taken (ms): {1}",                invalid_iterations,                ((TimeSpan)DateTime.Now.Subtract(start)).Milliseconds            ));            start = DateTime. Now;            for (int i = 0; i < valid_iterations; i++)            {                double valid_double = Double.Parse(valid_string);            }            Console.WriteLine(String.Format("{0} iterations of valid double, time taken (ms): {1}",                valid_iterations,                ((TimeSpan)DateTime.Now.Subtract(start)).Milliseconds            )); I think the moral is to look at the context -- specifically the data -- as well as the code itself. Once I had corrected my data, the performance of Double.Parse was perfectly acceptable, and while clearly it could have been improved, it was now sufficient to my needs.

  • Parse XML document

    - by Neil
    I am trying to parse a remote XML document (from Amazon AWS): <ItemLookupResponse xmlns="http://webservices.amazon.com/AWSECommerceService/2009-03-31"> <OperationRequest> <RequestId>011d32c5-4fab-4c7d-8785-ac48b9bda6da</RequestId> <Arguments> <Argument Name="Condition" Value="New"></Argument> <Argument Name="Operation" Value="ItemLookup"></Argument> <Argument Name="Service" Value="AWSECommerceService"></Argument> <Argument Name="Signature" Value="73l8oLJhITTsWtHxsdrS3BMKsdf01n37PE8u/XCbsJM="></Argument> <Argument Name="MerchantId" Value="Amazon"></Argument> <Argument Name="Version" Value="2009-03-31"></Argument> <Argument Name="ItemId" Value="603084260089"></Argument> <Argument Name="IdType" Value="UPC"></Argument> <Argument Name="AWSAccessKeyId" Value="[myAccessKey]"></Argument> <Argument Name="Timestamp" Value="2010-06-14T15:03:27Z"></Argument> <Argument Name="ResponseGroup" Value="OfferSummary,ItemAttributes"></Argument> <Argument Name="SearchIndex" Value="All"></Argument> </Arguments> <RequestProcessingTime>0.0318510000000000</RequestProcessingTime> </OperationRequest> <Items> <Request> <IsValid>True</IsValid> <ItemLookupRequest> <Condition>New</Condition> <DeliveryMethod>Ship</DeliveryMethod> <IdType>UPC</IdType> <MerchantId>Amazon</MerchantId> <OfferPage>1</OfferPage> <ItemId>603084260089</ItemId> <ResponseGroup>OfferSummary</ResponseGroup> <ResponseGroup>ItemAttributes</ResponseGroup> <ReviewPage>1</ReviewPage> <ReviewSort>-SubmissionDate</ReviewSort> <SearchIndex>All</SearchIndex> <VariationPage>All</VariationPage> </ItemLookupRequest> </Request> <Item> <ASIN>B0000UTUNI</ASIN> <DetailPageURL>http://www.amazon.com/Garnier-Fructis-Fortifying-Conditioner-Minute/dp/B0000UTUNI%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</DetailPageURL> <ItemLinks> <ItemLink> <Description>Technical Details</Description> <URL>http://www.amazon.com/Garnier-Fructis-Fortifying-Conditioner-Minute/dp/tech-data/B0000UTUNI%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</URL> </ItemLink> <ItemLink> <Description>Add To Baby Registry</Description> <URL>http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/baby/add-item.html%3Fasin.0%3DB0000UTUNI%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</URL> </ItemLink> <ItemLink> <Description>Add To Wedding Registry</Description> <URL>http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wedding/add-item.html%3Fasin.0%3DB0000UTUNI%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</URL> </ItemLink> <ItemLink> <Description>Add To Wishlist</Description> <URL>http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/add-item.html%3Fasin.0%3DB0000UTUNI%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</URL> </ItemLink> <ItemLink> <Description>Tell A Friend</Description> <URL>http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/taf/B0000UTUNI%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</URL> </ItemLink> <ItemLink> <Description>All Customer Reviews</Description> <URL>http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B0000UTUNI%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</URL> </ItemLink> <ItemLink> <Description>All Offers</Description> <URL>http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0000UTUNI%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIYPTKHCWTRWWPWBQ%26tag%3Dws%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D386001%26creativeASIN%3DB0000UTUNI</URL> </ItemLink> </ItemLinks> <ItemAttributes> <Binding>Health and Beauty</Binding> <Brand>Garnier</Brand> <EAN>0603084260089</EAN> <Feature>Helps restore strength and shine</Feature> <Feature>Penetrates deep to nourish, repair and rejuvenate</Feature> <Feature>Makes hair softer and more manageable without weighing it down</Feature> <ItemDimensions> <Weight Units="hundredths-pounds">40</Weight> </ItemDimensions> <Label>Garnier</Label> <ListPrice> <Amount>419</Amount> <CurrencyCode>USD</CurrencyCode> <FormattedPrice>$4.19</FormattedPrice> </ListPrice> <Manufacturer>Garnier</Manufacturer> <NumberOfItems>1</NumberOfItems> <ProductGroup>Health and Beauty</ProductGroup> <ProductTypeName>ABIS_DRUGSTORE</ProductTypeName> <Publisher>Garnier</Publisher> <Size>5.0 oz</Size> <Studio>Garnier</Studio> <Title>Garnier Fructis Fortifying Fortifying Deep Conditioner, 3 Minute Masque - • www.domain.com and domain.com records in microsoft dns

    - by captainmish
Hello Apologies if this is already answered, its a tricky one to search for! We are using split DNS for a domain used internally. For the outside nameservers, theres a simple zone with: @ IN A ip.ad.dr.ess www IN A ip.ad.re.ss This works fine externally. Internally its a windows server 2003 DNS server, so the www a record works fine, but I cant figure out how to add that primary record (using at symbol @ in bind). Can anyone help with how to get the same results from windows dns? I just want to be able to add a record for domain.com without being forced to use something.domain.com Thanks, Edit: This domain is not the "main" AD domain, and not used for logins etc.

  • Trying to populate ListView in Android using objects from Parse

    - by mrwienerdog
    I am pretty darned new to android, and VERY new to Parse. I have created a class, StudentInformation, that includes columns for name, address, phone, etc. I would like to create a listview that contains the names of all students added to the class. How do I do this? I have got it to the point that I can Toast out the objectIDs of all of my entries, but can't figure out how to extract and add just the names to the ListView. Here is a snippet of the code: //Set up the listview studentListView = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.listViewStudents); //Create and populate an ArrayList of objects from parse ParseQuery query = new ParseQuery("StudentInformation"); final ArrayList<Object> studentList = new ArrayList<Object>(); query.findInBackground(new FindCallback() { public void done(List<ParseObject> objects, ParseException e) { if (e == null) { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), objects.toString(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); for(int i = 0;i < objects.size(); i++){ objects.get(i); studentList.add("name".toString()); } } else { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Error", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } } }); //studentList.addAll(Arrays.asList(students)); listAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<Object>(this,android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,studentList); studentListView.setAdapter(listAdapter); } I have left the toast in where I toatst out the objectIDs in the public void done.... method. Any help would be, as always, greatly appreciated. Should be mentioned (possibly), no errors are thrown, the listview just never gets populated after the toast disappears. Don't know if this will help anyone, but I took a bit from both posts below, and came up with this: //Set up the listview studentList = new ArrayList<String>(); //Create and populate an ArrayList of objects from parse listAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1); studentListView = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.listViewStudents); studentListView.setAdapter(listAdapter); final ParseQuery query = new ParseQuery("StudentInformation"); query.findInBackground(new FindCallback() { public void done(List<ParseObject> objects, ParseException e) { if (e == null) { //Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), objects.toString(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); for (int i = 0; i < objects.size(); i++) { Object object = objects.get(i); String name = ((ParseObject) object).getString("name").toString(); listAdapter.add(name); } } else { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Error", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } } });

  • Java: Parse Australian Street Addresses

    - by bguiz
Looking for a quick and dirty way to parse Australian street addresses into its parts: 3A/45 Jindabyne Rd, Oakleigh, VIC 3166 should split into: "3A", 45, "Jindabyne Rd" "Oakleigh", "VIC", 3166 Suburb names can have multiple words, as can street names. See: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1739746/parse-a-steet-address-into-components Has to be in Java, cannot make http requests (e.g. to web APIs). EDIT: Assume that format specified is always followed. I have no issue with spitting incorrectly formatted strings back at the user with a message telling them to follow the format (which I've described above).

  • redirect from mysite.com to www.mysite.com

    - by jml
hi there, i know that this has been answered many many times, so if someone wants to point me to another thread that answers my question specifically, that is fine... for right now, my searches aren't yielding many results. so i have a website like mysite.com that has a flash swf embedded in it and i go to www.mysite.com ... all of the sudden, things don't work properly. i would like to get to the bottom of this, because it's not like the page just "doesn't load" at all; it loads and i can only do certain things; as if certain functionality is disabled (might be url requests for specific urls etc). do i need to manage this in my control panel? i wouldn't assume so, because the site loads; just has a crippled functionality from within the swf. i was thinking it might have more to do with my crossdomain.xml file; could this be the case? thanks for any tips or suggestions.

  • Mapping an amazon server to a domain name registered with name.com

    - by S4M
I have an amazon S3 web server and a domain name registered in name.com (the name is sam-experiments.com). I am trying to have a static page hosted on the amazon web server to be displayed on http://www.sam-experiments.com On the web server side, my bucket name is 'www.sam-experiments.com', and it links to here: http://www.sam-experiments.com.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ On name.com, I added a new record with the followin characteristics: Record Type: CNAME Record Host: www.sam-experiments.com Record Answer: www.sam-experiments.com.s3.amazonaws.com. (as specified in the documentation here: http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/VirtualHosting.html#VirtualHostingCustomURLs) TTL: 300 However, nothing gets displayed on www.sam-experiments.com, and I am not able to find what I am doing wrong. I really would appreciate some tip. Thanks! Note: I already posted this question in stackoverflow, but didnt get any answer, so I thought posting here may be more appropriate.

  • Why is "www.mysite.com" different from "mysite.com"?

    - by sapeish
In any browser if I use www.mysite.com or just mysite.com the web page is correctly retrieved, but I am having trouble with Google Analytics and Facebook App. Facebook: To be able to get Likes, I create the Facebook App needed and set the site URL to http://mysite.com/. Using their tool http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/ when I test my page using http://mypage.com it works but using http://www.mypage.com fails with the message: Object at URL 'http://www.mysite.com/' of type 'website' is invalid because the domain 'www.mysite.com' is not allowed for the specified application id. Google Analytics: To be able to get traffic statistics, I created a Property and a Profile both with the URL http://www.mypage.com and no statistics were gathered in a week, when I changed the configured URL to http://mypage.com statistics where available a few hours later. What should I do to have statistics and likes for both www.mysite.com and mysite.com ??

  • Email with extra '.com' behind sender email address

    - by CHT
Currently I had a situation where I sent an email to xxx@abc.com.tw, but when I receive mail from xxx@abc.com.tw, it showed as xxx@abc.com.tw.com, with extra '.com' behind the email address, this just happen within this week. Before this, I didn't change any setting, currently I am using Outlook 2010. When I checked the email in webmail, it also showed it as xxx@abc.com.tw.com. It seem that it has nothing to do with Outlook. However, I also tried on Thunderbird 16.0.1, but still the problem is the same. Has anyone experienced this before? Is the problem caused by the sender or receiver? • Does .net calling COM which in turn calls other .net COM object works when using SxS and manifest fi

    - by Alex Shnayder
I have a .net application calling to a COM component (C++) which in turn calls to another COM object implemented in .NET. This application is using Windows SxS capabilities and does not register any of it's COM components. Not the one written in C++, and not the one written in .net. This first call to the C++ COM component works fine. But when the C++ COM component calls to the .net one, it fails with class not registered. I have tried creating a small C++ app with a manifest file which calls the .net component and it works. It seems that when the flow is .net - COM NATIVE - .NET COM. Then SxS breaks and does not work. When looking at Fusion Logs (assembly loading logs) I see that no one is even attempting to resolve the .NET COM assembly. Is this SxS scenario even supposed to work (I think it does supposed to work)? If yes, then what can I be doing wrong ?

  • The difference between traditional DLL and COM DLL.

    - by smwikipedia
I am currently studying COM. I found that COM DLL is kind of built upon the traditional DLL infrastructure. When we build COM DLLs, we still rely on the traditional DLL export methods to lead us to the internal COM co-classes. If COM is for component reusing at the binary level, I think the traditional DLL can achieve the same thing. They both expose functions, they are both binary, so what's the point of turning to COM approach? Currently, I have the feeling that the traditional DLL expose methods in a "flat" manner, while the COM DLL expose methods in an "OOP" hierarchy manner. And the OOP manner seems to be a better approach. Could this be the reason why COM prevails? Many thanks.

  • C# - parse content away from structure in a binary file

    - by Jeff Godfrey
Using C#, I need to read a packed binary file created using FORTRAN. The file is stored in an "Unformatted Sequential" format as described here (about half-way down the page in the "Unformatted Sequential Files" section): http://www.tacc.utexas.edu/services/userguides/intel8/fc/f_ug1/pggfmsp.htm As you can see from the URL, the file is organized into "chunks" of 130 bytes or less and includes 2 length bytes (inserted by the FORTRAN compiler) surrounding each chunk. So, I need to find an efficient way to parse the actual file payload away from the compiler-inserted formatting. Once I've extracted the actual payload from the file, I'll then need to parse it up into its varying data types. That'll be the next exercise. My first thoughts are to slurp up the entire file into a byte array using File.ReadAllBytes. Then, just iterate through the bytes, skipping the formatting and transferring the actual data to a second byte array. In the end, that second byte array should contain the actual file contents minus all the formatting, which I'd then need to go back through to get what I need. As I'm fairly new to C#, I thought there might be a better, more accepted way of tackling this. Also, in case it's helpful, these files could be fairly large (say 30MB), though most will be much smaller...

  • What options to parse a DTD using PHP

    - by Chadwick
I need to parse DTDs using PHP and am hoping there's a simple library to help out. Each DTD has numerous <!ENTITY... and <!-- Comment... elements, which I need to act upon. Note that I do not need to validate anything against these DTDs, simply parse them as data files themselves. A few options I've looked at: James Clarke's SD, which is an option of last resort, but I'd like to avoid the complexity of building/installing/configuring code external to PHP. I'm not sure it's even possible in my situation. PEAR has an XML_DTD_Parser, which requires installing/configuring PEAR and a number of pear modules, which I'm also not sure is possible, and would rather avoid. Has anyone used it with success? PHP XML Classes has the class_path_parser, which another site suggested, but it fails to read ENTITY elements. It appears to be using PHP's built in XML parsing capabilities, which use EXPAT. PHP's DOMDocument will validate against a DTD, so must be able to read them, though I don't see how to get at the DTD parser directly at first glance.

  • Apache: Redirect blog.foobar.com to www.foobar.com

Hello, I have a site at blog.foobar.com that I have closed down, and I want any page requested there to be forwarded to www.foobar.com I want my VirtualHost config to do this for me. I currently have the following lines that does nearly what I want but not exactly: redirect permanent / http://www.foobar.com Unfortunately what happens is that if I ask for blog.foobar.com instead of forwarding to www.foobar.com it serves the pages on blog.foobar.com instead. Is there a way doing this in the VirtualHost config or should I use a .htaccess file instead? Regards Steve

  • Outlook 2010 hung on updating outlook.com email account

    - by warren
For the past week, through restarts of Outlook, and even a bounce of my machine, Outlook has been hung synchronizing my outlook.com account, after having moved messages from a different email inbox into the outlook.com inbox. The old account does not have the moved message any more (those synched-out correctly). The new account does not have the moved messages when acessing via the webui - ie, they are stuck in just Outlook. My problem? I need to reimage this laptop for a friend I need Outlook to finish syncing all those messages out to the hosted email How can I force this to happen?
