    Do you know any programming language features that help to detect bugs early in the software development process - ideally at compile-time or else as early as possible at run-time? Examples of well-known and effective bug-reducing features are: Static typing and generic types: type incompatibility errors are detected by the compiler Design by Contract (TM), also called Contract Programming: invalid values are quickly detected at runtime (through preconditions, postconditions and class invariants) Unit testing I ask this question in the context of improving an object-oriented programming language (called Obix) which has been designed from the ground up to 'make it easy to quickly write reliable code'. Besides the features mentioned above this language also incorporates other Fail-fast features such as: Objects are immutable by default Void (null) values are not allowed by default The aim is to add more Fail-fast concepts to the language.   • Run script at user login as root, with a catch

    I'm trying to run a PHP script as root on user login. The PHP script adds a Samba share to the Samba config, thus the need for root privileges. The only issue here, is that the user doesn't exist yet. This system is integrated with active directory. So when a user logs in for the first time, a home directory for them is created under /home/DOMAIN/username. I've found this question and that seems like the correct way to get what I want, but I'm having trouble with the syntax since I don't know the user's name. Would it be something like: ALL ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /home/DOMAIN/*/createSambaShare.php This doesn't seem to work as it is currently. Anyone have any ideas or a "scripted" way to add a Samba share on user login? Since I've made other changes to /etc/skel, I just added the bash necessary to run the PHP script in .profile in there. This then gets copied to the "new" user's home and it tries to run the PHP script. But it fails, because these are not privileged users. Changing permissions on the PHP script will not help. It needs to be run as sudo because it opens the Samba config file for writing. Letting any user run the PHP script would result in a PHP error. The homes Samba directive doesn't work for my use case. I need the Samba share to exist once they exist on the server, even when they're not logged in.

I usually surround my connections with a try/finally, and I always close the connection in the finally clause. Given the above code, is it reasonable to assume that the connection will be closed if there is an exception?

  • Trying to catch integrity error with sqlaclhemey

    I'm having problems with trying to catch a error. I'm using pyramid/sqlalchemy and made a sign up form with email as the primary key. The problem is when a duplicate email is entered it raises a IntegrityError, so I'm trying to catch that error and provide a message but no matter what I do I can't catch it(the error keeps appearing). try: new_user = Users(email, firstname, lastname, password) DBSession.add(new_user) return HTTPFound(location = request.route_url('new')) except IntegrityError: message1 = "Yikes! Your email already exists in our system. Did you forget your password?" I get the same message when I tried except exc.SQLAlchemyError (although I want to catch specific errors and not a blanket catch all). Is there something wrong with my python syntax? or is there something I need to do special in sqlalchemy to catch it?

I'm handling the exceptions. I heard do not use Exit Try for some reason. Is that true, it's bad to do this? Is this the right way to halt execution of code thereafter the catch statement?

    I'm always finding myself wanting to put a try/catch around the lets say Business Layer methods. But I feel though that I don't need a try/catch if I'm simply rethrowing it up to the Presentation Layer. Is that right? I should not be rethrowing an exception from code that's wrapped in a try/catch in a BL method and should be letting the caller which would be from the Presentation Layer code be using a try/catch to handle it there? The BL method will throw an error without the try/catch anyway..the compiler will. So it wouldn't make sense to use a try/catch in a BL method that's to be consumed by a layer higher up correct?

  • Assignment of roles in communication when sides could try to cheat

    Assume two nodes in a peer-to-peer network initiating a communication. In this communication, one node has to serve as a "sender", another as a "receiver" (role names are arbitrary here). I'd like the nodes to assert either role with approximately equal probability. That is, in N communications with various other nodes a given node would assume the "sender" role roughly N/2 times. Since there's no third-party arbiter available, nodes should agree on their roles by exchanging messages. The catch is that we can encounter a rogue node which would try to become the "receiver" in most or all cases, and coax the other side to always serve as a "sender". I'm looking for an algorithm to assign roles to sides of communication so that no side could get a predetermined role with high probability. It's OK for the side which is trying to cheat to fail to communicate.

  • Idea for doing almost same work in both catch & finally(C#3.0)

    I have a requirement. I am processing some files and after the processing are done I am archiving those files into an archive folder with timestamp appended. The file archiving and putting time stamp portion I am doing in the Finally block. Now a new requirement has come where I need to mail if something wrong goes in the original files and then I need to archive the same. Now this piece of code I need to handle in the catch block. But if I write the code entirely in the catch block, then it will fire only if there is an exception; otherwise not. So basically I am writing the same pice of code in both the catch and finally block. What is the standard and recommended approach you people think will be better in this case? I am using C#3.0 Thanks.

  • Making a Job Change That's Easy Why Not Try a Career Change

    A few nights ago I received a comment on one of our blog posts that reminded me of a statistic that I heard a while back. The statistic reflected the change in our views towards work and showed how while people in past generations would stay in one role for their working career - now with so much choice people not only change jobs often but also change careers 4-5 times in their working life. To differentiate between a job change and a career change: when I say job change this could be an IT Sales person moving from one IT Sales role to another IT Sales role. A Career change for example would be that same IT Sales person moving from IT Sales to something outside the scope of their industry - maybe to something like an Engineer or Scuba Dive Instructor. The reason for Career changes can be as varied as the people who make them. Someone's motivation could be to pursue a passion or maybe there is a change in their personal circumstances forcing the change or it could be any other number of reasons. I think it takes courage to make a Career change - it can be easy to stay in your comfort zone and do what you know, but to really push yourself sometimes you need to try something new, it is a matter of making that career transition as smooth as possible for yourself. This could be anything from going from I.T. to Journalism, Engineering to Teaching or any combination of career you can think of. I don't think there ever has been a time where we have had so many opportunities to do so many different things in our working life. While this idea sounds great in theory, putting it into practice would be much harder to do I think. First, in an increasingly competitive job market, employers tend to look for specialists in their field. You may want to make a change but your options may be limited by the number of employers willing to take a chance on someone new to an industry that will likely require a significant investment in time to get brought up to speed. Also, using myself as an example if I was given the opportunity to move into Journalism/Communication/Marketing career from my career as an IT Recruiter - realistically I would have to take a significant pay cut to make this change as my current salary reflects the expertise I have in my current career. I would not immediately be up to speed moving into a new career and would not be able to justify a similar salary. Yes there are transferable skills in any career change, but even though you may have transferable skills you must realise that you will also have a large amount of learning to do which would take time. These are two initial hurdles that I immediately think of, there may be more but nothing is insurmountable. If you work out what you want to do with your working career whatever that may be, you then need to just need to work out the steps to get to your end goal. This is where utilising the power of your networks and using Social Media can come in handy. If you are interested in working somewhere why not proactively take the opportunity to research the industry or company - find out who it is you need to speak to and get in touch with them. We spend so much time working, we should enjoy the work we do and not be afraid to try new things. Waiting for your dream job to fall into your lap or be handed to you on a silver platter is not likely going to happen, so if there is something you do want to do, work out a plan to make it happen and chase after it.   • PHP Web Services - Nice try

    Thanks to the membership in the O'Reilly User Group Programme the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (short: MSCC) recently received a welcome package with several book titles. Among them is the latest publication of Lorna Jane Mitchell - 'PHP Web Services: APIs for the Modern Web'. Following is the book review I put on Amazon: Nice try! Initially, I was astonished that a small book like 'PHP Web Services' would be able to cover all the interesting topics about APIs and Web Services, independently whether they are written in PHP or not. And unfortunately, the title isn't able to stand up to the readers (or at least my) expectations. Maybe as a light defense, there is no usual paragraph about the intended audience of that book, but still I have to admit that the first half (chapters 1 to 8) are well written and Lorna has her points on the various technologies. Also, the code samples in PHP are clean and easy to understand. With chapter 'Debugging Web Services' the book started to change my mind about the clarity of advice and the instructions on designing and developing good APIs. Eventually, this might be related to the fact that I'm used to other tools since years, like Telerik Fiddler as HTTP proxy in order to trace and inspect any kind of request/response handling. Including localhost monitoring, SSL certification acceptance, and the ability to debug mobile devices, especially iOS-based ones. Compared to Charles, Fiddler is available for free. What really got me off the hook is the following statement in chapter 10 about Service Type Decisions: "For users who have larger systems using technology stacks such as Java, C++, or .NET, it may be easier for them to integrate with a SOAP service." WHAT? A couple of pages earlier the author recommends to stay away from 'old-fashioned' API styles like SOAP (if possible). And on top of that I wonder why there are tons of documentation towards development of RESTful Web Services based on WebAPI. The ASP.NET stack clearly moves away from SOAP to JSON and REST since years! Honestly, as a software developer on the .NET stack this leaves a mixed feeling after all. As for the remaining chapters I simply consider them as 'blah blah' without any real value and lots of theoretical advice. Related to the chapter 13 about 'Documentation', I just had the 'pleasure' to write a C#-based client against a Java-based SOAP Web Service. Personally, I take the WSDL as the master reference in the first place and Visual Studio generates all the stub types involved in the communication. During the implementation and testing I came across a 'java.lang.NullPointerException' in various methods and for various method parameters. The WSDL and the generated types were declared as Nullable, so nothing to worry about, or? Well, I logged in a support ticket, and guess what was the response to that scenario? "The service definition in the WSDL is wrong, please refer to the documentation in order to use the methods and parameters correctly" - No comment! Lorna's title is a quick read and in some areas she has good advice on designing and implementing Web Services and APIs. But roughly 100 pages aren't enough to cover a vast topic like that. After all, nice try and I'm looking forward to an improved second edition. Honestly, I never thought that I would come across a poor review. In general, it's a good book but it clearly has a lack of depth, the PHP code samples are incomplete (closing tags missing), and there are too many assumptions and theoretical statements.

  • CPU fan kicks in to full gear when i try to install ubuntu 12.10 or LTS

    Whenever I try to install (DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS 7) both versions of Ubuntu desktop on my PC the CPU fan starts spinning so fast that I couldn't even go through the installation for fear of my CPU exploding. In windows 7, the temp reaches 25-30 idle and 30-45 under full load. I tried installing through Wubi and by burning it to USB drive. Both wield the same results. I would appreciate any help.     I have a dell inspiron 64 bit and I'm running both windows 7 and Ubuntu in dual boot I am having trouble installing skype and wine. When I try to install skype etc I get the following error: sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information...
