• AWS Amazon EC2 - password-less SSH login for non-root users using PEM keypairs

  We've got a couple of clusters running on AWS (HAProxy/Solr, PGPool/PostgreSQL) and we've setup scripts to allow new slave instances to be auto-included into the clusters by updating their IPs to config files held on S3, then SSHing to the master instance to kick them to download the revised config and restart the service. It's all working nicely, but in testing we're using our master pem for SSH which means it needs to be stored on an instance. Not good. I want a non-root user that can use an AWS keypair who will have sudo access to run the download-config-and-restart scripts, but nothing else. rbash seems to be the way to go, but I understand this can be insecure unless setup correctly. So what security holes are there in this approach: New AWS keypair created for user.pem (not really called 'user') New user on instances: user Public key for user is in ~user/.ssh/authorized_keys (taken by creating new instance with user.pem, and copying it from /root/.ssh/authorized_keys) Private key for user is in ~user/.ssh/user.pem 'user' has login shell of /home/user/bin/rbash ~user/bin/ contains symbolic links to /bin/rbash and /usr/bin/sudo /etc/sudoers has entry "user ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: ~user/.bashrc sets PATH to /home/user/bin/ only ~user/.inputrc has 'set disable-completion on' to prevent double tabbing from 'sudo /' to find paths. ~user/ -R is owned by root with read-only access to user, except for ~user/.ssh which has write access for user (for writing known_hosts), and ~user/bin/* which are +x Inter-instance communication uses 'ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -i ~user/.ssh/user.pem user@ sudo ' Any thoughts would be welcome. • Installing mysql on leopard: "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket"

  I migrated to a new machine and used migration assistant to copy across my files (which seemed to copy across the DBs) but I had to use macports to install Mysql (whereas last time I compiled from source via Dan Benjamin's guide). For some reason, mysql is intermittently throwing the following error; Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2) It does this no matter what I try, which has included setting the socket in /opt/local/etc/mysql5/my.cnf.   I have a rather interesting issue with SVG animation. I am animating along a circular path using Raphael obj = canvas.circle(x, y, size); path = canvas.circlePath(x, y, radius); path = canvas.path(path); //generate path from path value string obj.animateAlong(path, rate, false); The circlePath method is one I have created myself to generate the circle path in SVG path notation: Raphael.fn.circlePath = function(x , y, r) { var s = "M" + x + "," + (y-r) + "A"+r+","+r+",0,1,1,"+(x-0.1)+","+(y-r)+" z"; return s; } So far, so good. This all works. I have my object (obj) animating along the circular path. BUT: The animation only works if I create the object at the same X, Y coords as the path itself. If I start the animation from any other coordinates (say, half-way along the path) the object animates in a circle of the correct radius, however it starts the animation from the object X,Y coordinates, rather than along the path as it is displayed visually. Ideally I would like to be able to stop/start the animation - the same problem occurs on restart. When I stop then restart the animation, it animates in a circle starting from the stopped X,Y.

• mysql backup and restore from ib_logfile failure

  Here's the case: After computer being hacked, we are in a rush to backup all data out to other computer. As a result, the mysql databases are not backup out as sql statement. What we have done is backup out all the physical files/folders in the C drive to new computer. Eg: C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\data In this case, all data for mysql are inside unreadable file. Inside data folder consist of files like ib_logfile0, ib_logfile1, but not ib_data1 All database's table structure format are inside each respective folder. (Some folder have .frm, .opt) (some other folder have .frm, .myd, .myi) How can I retrieve back the data from the database in a new computer? I tried to install the same mysql version(4.1) at new computer, then replace all backup files inside data folder into this mysql in new computer. Then restart mysql service. When I restart, it fail: Could not start mysql service on local computer. error 1067: process terminated unexpectedly. • Cheetah with Cherrypy: how to load base templates, and do so automatically on change during developm

  I am working on a cherrypy+cheetah app and would like to improve the development experience. I have everything working when I manually compile templates beforehand. However, during development I'd rather just load the templates every time they are referenced so that I don't need to kill and restart my application. I have a couple of issues I am facing: If I have templates inheriting from base templates, I get import errors (can't find base templates). I think I had this actually working during my experiments, but unfortunately didn't save it and now I can't make it work. Suppose I get 1. working, how do make it so that edits even in base templates get picked up without restart. Below is my sample application that should demonstrate the problems. • iphone bookmarklet cookie persistence

  I have an iphone (jqtouch based) web app that uses cookies for authentication. The use flow is as follows : user goes to the mobile landing page and is instructed to save the page as a bookmarklet on their home page. they launch the bookmarklet to go to a login page to login and get a cookie. the cookie works and they can navigate throughout the web site. However this session cookie is not persistent. If they leave safari and then restart using the saved bookmarklet, the cookies set during their previous session are gone. Just using safari (ie: launch safari directly rather than through the bookmarklet) to navigate the pages works fine (ie: start safari, go to url, do login, restart safari, go back to url). I find that that the cookies that were active when the bookmarklet was created are persistent but any cookies set during the session when safari is accessed through the bookmarklet are not persistent. I'm wondering if this is a safari/iphone issue and/or if there is any way around this. Many thanks for any insight you can provide.

  I'm wanting to use the asterisk manager api to show the status of all my SIP lines in a PHP web interface. I thought I'd start simple and use telnet to see it working. So I created a user in /etc/asterisk/manager.conf [portal] secret = password read = all,system,call,log,verbose,command,agent,user Then telnet to localhost on port 5038 This is what I get. asterisk ~ # telnet localhost 5038 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. Asterisk Call Manager/1.0 Action: login Username: portal Secret: 8u9sdgk Events: off Response: Success Message: Authentication accepted Action: SIPPeers Response: Error Message: Permission denied Why am I getting permission denied? I thought the user has basically full access? Do I need to restart asterisk to make this work? I didn't restart it. On the other hand, I was able to log in which makes me think that the manager.conf has been reloaded as the portal user didn't exist before. Any ideas?

• Eclipse RAP - Firefox doesn't forget session

  We've got an Eclipse RAP application that's behaving a bit strangely in Firefox - two distinct problems. When you browse around, you can click on a button in one part of the system. This opens a popup window like so: IWorkbenchBrowserSupport bs; bs = PlatformUI.getWorkbench().getBrowserSupport(); int style = IWorkbenchBrowserSupport.AS_EXTERNAL; IWebBrowser b = bs.createBrowser(style, getRandomID(), "Hello world", ""); b.openURL(new URL(...)); where the URL is another servlet in the application. This servlet is in the same runtime, but has nothing to do with RAP - it takes a binary blob from in-memory storage and dumps it in the output stream. Problem 1: This causes the HTTP session to die in firefox, and shows the "session expired" RAP error page with a link to restart the session. Problem 2: Now, when you click on the link to restart the session, it shows the application's dialog again, but the session expired error is shown again the moment you do anything. This prevents the user from using the system again, unless Firefox is closed down completely and restarted. A quick peek with FireBug reveals that the JSESSIONID passed by Firefox does not change. Has anyone seen this before?

• Web service SSL handshake fails in production environment unless SSL debugging enabled

  Scenario: calling a client web service over SSL (https) with mutual SSL authentication. Different service endpoint URLs and certs (both keystore and truststore) for test vs. production environments. Both test and production environments run tomcat / JBoss clustered. Production environment has load balancing / BigIP, runs Blade and non-Blade machines. Truststore is set (using -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStore=value) at startup. Keystore is set using System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStore", "value") in Java code. Web service call made using Axis2. All works fine in test environment, but when we moved to production environment (6 servers), it appears certs are not being forwarded for the handshake. Here's what we've done: in test environment, handshake using test versions of certs has been working all along, with no ssl debugging enabled confirmed in test environment that handshake with client production endpoint succeeds (production certs, both ours and theirs, are fine) -- this was done using -Djavax.net.debug=handshake,ssl confirmed that the error condition occurs on all 6 production servers took one server out of the cluster, turned on ssl debugging for just that one (with a restart), hit it directly, handshake works! switched to a different server without the debugging turned on, handshake error condition occurs turned debugging on on that second server (with a restart), hit it directly, handshake works! From the evidence, it seems like somehow the debugging being enabled causes the certificates to be properly retrieved/conveyed, although that makes no sense! I wonder whether somehow the enabled debugging makes the system pay attention to the System.setProperty call, and ignore it otherwise. However, in local and test environments, handshake worked without debugging enabled. Do I maybe need to be setting keystore on server startup like I'm setting truststore? Have been avoiding that because the keystore will differ for each of our test environments (16 of them).

• How to display NotifyIcon and SSDP Service running during AutoLogon

  I've got an application (that is targetting .Net Framework 2.0) that is running on startup of the System, and I'm trying to get a NotifyIcon to display. When my program starts up when a user either Runs it normally or is started as a child process after the system has already logged on everything is fine. If my application starts up as the system is performing an AutoLogon using POSReady2009 (basically XP with Single User set). Then the NotifyIcon never becomes active. If you subsequently check (in a timer) the .Visible of the Icon at any point later it always reports that it is visible = true. If you disable the SSDPSrv and restart the Computer, the Icon displays correctly. I have a sneaking suspicion this is related to .Net 3.5sp1 installed over the top of a .Net 2 system. Is there some process that I should be following to ensure that my NotifyIcon is always available to the user. I have setup RegisterWindowMessage("TaskbarCreated") but I don't get this message called, except when you forcilbly Kill Explorer.exe and restart it. Even so, a NotifyIcon interally registers for these notifications anyway, so it shouldn't be required. I'm happy to stall the startup of my program, but once the program starts up, I expect that the icon shows correctly. If there is a KB article that I cannot find detailing this I'd be happy with that too.

  Hi everyone, This is an issue sporadically for very few users, however we haven't been able to replicate it. However I have now got a Chrome instance (Mac) which is reproducing the error (for some unknown reason), and I hope to not restart it until I have this nailed! Rails application, using memcached for session store. While the bug manifests in the _app_session_id cookie not being created, our javascript-generated cookie test and app-generated language cookies are being created successfully. This means that InvalidAuthenticityToken errors are thrown for every form that is submitted by those afflicted - people can't log into the app. The error occurs across all browsers - had reports for IE7 and Firefox (which most users use). Switching to another browser often fixes the issue (though not always), and standard cache-cookie-clear tactics do not. So now that I have got Chrome open which is having the same issue - in development, staging and live environments (meaning http and https). All other browsers are fine. I've restarted the servers and restarted memcached. I don't really want to restart Chrome - in the risk that the issue does go away with that (having said that, it hasn't worked for users). I've been tcpdumping the requests - and although I'll keep digging, I'd love it if anyone had any suggestions, places to start looking, anything. This is really painful ;) Thanks!

• Installing ImageMagick extension with php/windows

  Running PHP Version 5.2.5 on Windows Server 2003 with IIS. Have virtually an identical server where we were able to install ImageMagick with no issues. It's running exactly the same version of php. Used the following steps to install, but it just won't seem to work on this server. ImageMagick itself is installed but php won't load the extension. We've spent hours trying to get the extension installed. It just won't show up in phpinfo(). INSTALL STEPS TAKEN* To install IMagick on windows xp (php 5.2.x) 1.) download and install ImageMagick-6.5.8-7 Q16-windows-dll.exe http://www.imagemagick.org/download/binaries/ ImageMagick-6.5.8-7-Q16-windows-dll.exe 2.) download php_imagick_dyn-Q16.dll from: http://valokuva.org/outside-blog-content/ imagick-windows-builds/080709/ copy dll to [PHP]/extension dir and rename it to php_imagick.dll 3.) You have to edit your php.ini file and add new extension "extension=php_imagick.dll" 4.) Save ini file and restart apache server. (If necessary, restart your windows) 5.) phpinfo() should show imagick enabled.

• iPod touch debugging: Error on install/run only if app exists on device already?

  Hi all, I am using an iPod to test an app. The device is all set up with the right provisioning profiles, etc-- that's not really the issue. But every time I start the app from Xcode on the device, I get the "A signed resource has been added, modified, or deleted." error from the Organizer window. Wait, I know, you think it's a provisioning profile problem. But here's the kicker: if I just delete the app from the iPod (using the main screen) and try again, it works fine. I only get this error when the app is already installed. The other kicker is that this behavior doesn't happen on an iPhone that I have for occasional testing-- on that device, I can start/restart/restart indefinitely. But using the iPod, my compile-run-test cycle is annoyingly slow since I have to manually delete the app each time. Any ideas? I'm using Xcode 3.2.2 (prerelease) FWIW. The iPod has stock OS 3.1.2 on it. Thanks!

• Strange Problem with Webservice and IIS

  Hello there, I have a Problem which confuses me a little bit, resp. where I don't have any Idea about what it could be. The System I'm using is Windows Vista, IIS 7.0, VS2008, Windows Software Factory, Entity Framework, WCF. The Binding for all Webservices is wshttpbinding. I'm using a Webservice hosted in IIS. This Webservice uses/calls another Webservice (also installed in the IIS). If I use a client calling the first Webservice (which calls the second Webservice) it works fine for about 4-10 Times. And then (it is repeatable to get this Problem, but sometimes it happens after 4, sometimes after 10 Time, but it always will happen), the Service and the IIS gets stuck. Stuck means, that this Webservice isn't callable anymore and generates an timeout after 1 minute. Even increasing Timeout doesn't change anything. If i try to restart the IIS I get an timeout error. So the IIS is also "stuck" (it is not really stuck, but I can't restart it). Only if I kill the w3wp.exe IIS is restartable and the Webservice will work again (until i again call this service several times). The logfiles (i'm no expert in things like logging or where to find/enable such logs, so to say : i'm a newbie) like http-logging, Event Viewer or WCF-Message Logging don't show any hints upon the source of the problem. I don't have this problem when I'm using a Webservice which doesn't call another Service. Calling a Webservice is done by Service Reference (I'm using no Proxy-Classes), but I think this should be no Problem. I have no idea of what is happening, nor how to solve this Problem. • Is NSManagedObjectContext autosaved or am I looking at NSFetchedResultsController's cache?

  I'm developing an iPhone app where I use a NSFetchedResultsController in the main table view controller. Then, if before saving the context, I press cancel and go back to the main table view, nothing is shown as expected. However, if I restart the app, the object I created on the context shows in the main table view. How come? At first, I thought it was because the NSFetchedResultsController was reading from the cache, but as you can see I set this to nil just to test. Also, [context hasChanges] returns true after I restart. What am I missing here?

• Grails or Play! for an ex-RoR developer ?

  Hello, I plan to begin learning a Java web framework (I love the Java API), I already used Rails and Django. I want something close to Java, but without all the complexity of J2EE. I've found 2 framework that could be good for me : Grails : Grails looks great, it use Groovy that is better than Java for web application (I think..), but it's slower, that use pure-java components (Hibernate, Strut, Spring), it looks pretty simple to deploy (send .war and it's ok !), the GSP is great ! It's a bit harder to debug (need to restart the server at each modification, and the stacktrace is a mix of Java and Groovy stack that is not always understandable..) Play! : This framework also looks great, it's faster than Grails (It's use directly Java), but I don't really like how it use Java, it modify the source code to transform the properties call as setXXX/getXXX, I'm not kind of that... The framework also have caching function that Grails don't (alreary) has. I don't really like the Template Engine. It's also easer to debug (no need to restart the server, and the stacktrace is clear) What do you recommend for ? I am looking for something easy to learn (I used a lot ruby and java, but a little bit java (But I love the Java API)), that is full featured (That's no a problem with all the Java Library availables, but if it's bundle and integrated I prefer), that scale and that is not too slow (faster than ruby), and if possible I would want something with a decent community to easily find support and answer to my questions ;) PS: No JRuby on Rails Thank you !

• How can I diagnose "Cannot determine peer address" in my Perl TCP script?

  I've this little script which does it's job pretty well but sometimes it tends to fail. It fails in 2 cases: with error send: Cannot determine peer address at ./tcp-new.pl line 52 with no output or anything, it just fails to deliver what it got to connected Tcp Client. Usually it happens after I disconnect from server, go home and connect it again. To fix this restart is required and it starts working. Sometimes this problem is followed by problem mentioned in point 1. Note: it's not problem when I disconnect and reconnect to it again within short amount of time (unless error nr 1 happens). • problems doing the Django tutorial on Dreamhost using Passengers

  I have looked and I could not find this question before, and it surprises me. I am reasonably proficient in Python, and I used Dreamhost for a number of years. Now I would like to learn Django. They are finally supporting it using Passenger. Which I do not know what is. Following the instructions on Dreamhost I installed Django. Then I started following the tutorial 01. This went well, except that I could not start the server (this in the tutorial) since the code was live on dreamhost. At the time this did not seem to make any difference. Then when I went on the second part of the tutorial I had to access the admin site. And it worked well going to myurl/admin/ , as it should. But here the problems started. According to the tutorial (here) I have to add a file in the poll application and then restart the server. But I never started the server in the first place, my code is running live on the web... but when I add a file the website the admin acts as if it does not see it. Probably dreamhost has started its own server, and I don't know how to restart it. But I assume this is going to be a common problem when you run django on dreamhost. Every time you add a file you will have to tell the server to consider it. So what should I do to let the server know about it? Thanks, Pietro
