• index help for a MySQL query using greater-than operator and ORDER BY

  I have a table with at least a couple million rows and a schema of all integers that looks roughly like this: start stop first_user_id second_user_id The rows get pulled using the following queries: SELECT * FROM tbl_name WHERE stop >= M AND first_user_id=N AND second_user_id=N ORDER BY start ASC SELECT * FROM tbl_name WHERE stop >= M AND first_user_id=N ORDER BY start ASC I cannot figure out the best indexes to speed up these queries. The problem seems to be the ORDER BY because when I take that out the queries are fast. I've tried all different types of indexes using the standard index format: ALTER TABLE tbl_name ADD INDEX index_name (index_col_1,index_col_2,...) And none of them seem to speed up the queries. Does anyone have any idea what index would work? Also, should I be trying a different type of index? I can't guarantee the uniqueness of each row so I've avoided UNIQUE indexes. Any guidance/help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  I'm working on a project with QT and am trying to draw icons from a database. I have auxiliary information in the table that I would like to display if the user chooses to see it (i.e. the x,y of the icon and some other options from database). I am debating on would it be better to go through and just redraw all the icons with this information added, or do some sort of looping through the icons and setting some value to true to display the information.   Hi all, had anyone the same experiences with jquery ajax() and the beforeSend property??? And even better... any advice how to fix this problem ??? THX ;-) Actually what i am doing is reading from the database with an ajax call before i wanna sent the new data to the database via ajax (I deed to get to the last page of all comments). What happens is that beforeSend retrieves the data WITH the data which should be sent afterwards?!?!   I've got a flex/air app I've been working on, it uses a local sqlite database that is created on the initial application start. I've added some features to the application and in the process I had to add a new field to one of the database tables. My questions is how to I go about getting the application to create one new field that is located in a table that already exists? this is a the line that creates the table stmt.text = "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS tbl_status ("+"status_id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT,"+" status_status TEXT)"; And now I'd like to add a status_default field. thanks! • How to (pre)start xamlx workflow service

  Related to this question. I have a xamlx workflow service that loads part of its definition from a database when it runs (using ActivityXamlServices.Load). Reason for this is that I need versioning, see the related question. I'll use WCF routing to direct calls to the right service. The part that I load dynamically contains a Receive activity. However, this activity is 'invisible' as long as the workflow doesn't start because the part of the workflow I load from the database is only loaded when the workflow starts. So from the outside it appears as if there is no Receive activity in the workflow. Apart from not being able to generate a contract for the workflow service, I can't call the service either. My first attempt was to do a soap call with the right contract on the workflow service. However, the runtime doesn't automagically activate my workflow in that case. So the question is, how do I start a workflow that is hosted inside IIS? Regards, Ronald

• DateTimePicker not updating dataset

  I'm binding a DateTimePicker control to my dataset (which is linked to a database). However, unless the user changes the date on that control, the dataset seems to contain null for that entry (even though the Value entry of the control isn't null). I've done a bit of googling, and there's a lot of talk about people having troubles with the DateTimePicker not supporting null values. However, I DON'T want it to support a NULL value. The column in my database table is set to "NOT NULL". It's as if the dataset isn't updating itself from the DateTimePicker control unless the user changes the date. I've tried explicitly setting the date for the control in code (using DateTimePicker.Value = DateTime.Now). This still doesn't update the dataset side. Thankyou for any help, Dan.

  Basically a live feed of all your friends' recent posts. In a stupid sort of approach I think I'd start by building a query like: SELECT * FROM tblposts WHERE userid=friend_id_1OR userid=friend_id_2...... and so on Where friend_id_% is the userid of a friend from your friends list. But this must be a very inefficient way of doing it, right? Is there any faster way of doing this in MySQL? Maybe some clever DB schema? (I know FB uses Hadoob but I'm not experienced enough to go that far :( )

  Hey gang, I've having a problem with a VBScript connecting to an access MDB Database. My platform is Vista64, but the majority of resources out there are for ASP/IIS7. Quite simply, I can't get it to connect. I'm getting the following error: 800A0E7A - "Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed" My code is: Set conn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") strConnect = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\database.MDB" conn.Open strConnect So far I have ran %WINDIR%\System32\odbcad32.exe to try to configure the Driver in 32bit mode, but it hasn't done the trick. • Is this so bad when using MySQL queries in PHP?

  I need to update a lot of rows, per a user request. It is a site with products. I could... Delete all old rows for that product, then loop through string building a new INSERT query. This however will lose all data if the INSERT fails. Perform an UPDATE through each loop. This loop currently iterates over 8 items, but in the future it may get up to 15. This many UPDATEs doesn't sound like too good an idea. Change DB Schema, and add an auto_increment Id to the rows. Then first do a SELECT, get all old rows ids in a variable, perform one INSERT, and then a DELETE WHERE IN SET. What is the usual practice here? Thanks

  Hello, here is my problem: We own SiteA and SiteB and they share the same server and database where we have full control. SiteC , siteD and siteE are some of the sites we own as well but reside on a different web hosts. The goal is to create a unified search functionality for all of the sites mentioned above. That is if somebody search for a term in SiteA, the search result will automatically come up with results from SiteB,SiteC,SiteD and Site E too. The search results should be shown under the website they were found in. All these websites content are stored in their own databases. If I use SphinxSearch to index the above sites,I would then require those sites that we dont have complete control with to setup a web service where i can download a database dump or csv file for indexing. Im not quite sure about how a sphider will come into play here so need your opinion. Sphinx or a spider? THanks!

• Rails - MS-SQL Server problems (unixODBC, FreeTDS) on Mac 10.6

  Followed the instructions on the Rails wiki and have had success connecting to SQL Server 2000 with TSQL -- both with DSN-less and DNS connections. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.3. Wiki instructions here. Installed ruby-odbc, dbi (0.4.0), dbd-odbc (2.4.5), activerecord-sqlserver-adapter (2.3.5). In my database.yml (Rails 2.3.6): development: adapter: sqlserver mode: ODBC dsn: 'DRIVER=/usr/local/lib/libtdsodbc.so;TDS_Version=8.0;SERVER=mssql01.discountasp.net;DATABASE=DB_164368_dmusd;Port=1433;uid=DB_164368_dmusd_user;pwd=Schools77;' This yields the following error: ODBC::Error: S1090 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid string or buffer length When I attempt to use a DSN connection, I get the following error: ODBC::Error: IM002 (0) [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified I have in fact verified that the FreeTDS driver (libtdsodbc.so) is installed and the path correct. • Sharepoint - connectable receiving, XSLT editable web part?

  You can use the "Data View" webpart to take data from a database call, then you can edit the XSLT manually to make it look and do whatever you want, within the scope of that data and XSLT capabilities. Is there a web part that allows me to do the same thing, but with data that is received by a connected webpart source rather than a database set? For example: I'd like to be able to pull in a Data View webpart that queries a bunch of data and makes it available all over the page. Then, I would like to hide that Data View. Once it is hidden, I'd like to be able to take another customizable webpart and pull a field (or multiple fields if possible) from the Data View webpart via a webpart connection. This would allow me to display various fields in creative formats without having to call the same query multiple times on the same page by different webparts. Is there an in house webpart that will allow me to do this?

• .net web service: Can't add service reference, only web reference

  I have an existing project that consumes web services. One was added as a service reference, and the other as a web reference. I don't recall why one was added as a web reference, but perhaps it's because I couldn't get it to work! The existing service reference for the one web service works fine, so it's not a .net version issue. I can successfully create a service reference for the second web service, but none of the methods are available. The .wsdl shows the schema, but the Reference.vb shows only the Namespace, and none of the methods. To clarify, these are two different 3rd party web service providers. We'd like to move to the service reference so we have more control over the configuration as we're having various issues with timeouts. Anyone come across this before? Edit Does it matter that there are two services at the address?

• Why do I get this error when I try to push my SQLite3 to Postgresql (via Taps) on Cedar Stack?

  I've done quite a bit of research on Heroku Dev Center and I am now looking to the community for help. Here is my problem. I can not push my db to Heroku Cedar Stack. I am trying to migrate a sqlite database to postgresql via Taps gem. When I am ready to deploy I run: bundle install --without production heroku run db:push I get the following result: Running db:seed attached to terminal... up, run.17 sh: db:seed: not found heroku run rake db:migrate And when I run the migration: heroku run rake db:migrate I get the following: Running rake db:migrate attached to terminal... up, run.18 rake aborted! No Rakefile found (looking for: rakefile, Rakefile, rakefile.rb, Rakefile.rb) /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2367:in `raw_load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2007:in `block in load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2058:in `standard_exception_handling' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2006:in `load_rakefile' /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:1991:in `run' /usr/local/bin/rake:31:in `<main>' Everytime I push to Heroku (git push heroku master) it fails because my gem file is attempting to install sqlite3 gem-even though its inside of the development and test groups in my Gemfile. My database.yml production environment still points to sqlite adapter even after I have run the following command successfully: heroku config:add BUNDLE_WITHOUT="test development" --app app_name_on_heroku Out of ideas. • Dynamic mod_rewrite or how to plan a dynamic website

  Hi, I'm trying to make a clean url for a blog on a dynamic website, but I think that the problem is that I don't know how to plan the website schema. I read about how to use mod_rewrite and all I found is how to make "http://www.website.com/?category&date&post-title" to "http://www.website.com/category/date/post-title". that's works o.k for me. The problem is that If my url looks like "http://www.website.com/blog/?id=34" this method won't work as far as I got it. So, I have two questions: 1. Is there a way to use mod_rewrite (maybe read from a txt file) to read the post title of my blog and rewrite my url by date and post-title? 2. Should I rewrite my website to query the data from one index file in the homepage and use mod_rewrite to write the nice url? should I query also the date and the title of the post instead just the post ID?

• MySQL query returns different set of results on two identical databases

  I exported a live MySQL database (running mysql 5.0.45) to a local copy (running mysql 5.1.33) with no errors upon import. There is a view in the database, that when executed locally, returns a different set of data than when executed remotely. It's returning 32 results instead of 63. When I execute the raw sql, the same problem occurs. I've inspected the data in all tables being joined, and the counts are the same. The query is simple and has no where conditions - but about 10 joins. Aside from the differences in mysql versions... I can't find any reason that this query would return different results between databases... since they are effectively exact copies. Has anyone experienced a problem like this before?

  I'm getting data where the database is hidden behind a WCF service. Is it possible to use Entity Framework in a scenario where I have custom objects coming from a web service? (No access to the external database, and no current plans for insert/update/delete logic) Starting with an empty EF model and adding an entity I get this error on compile: No mapping specified for instances of the EntitySet and AssociationSet in the EntityContainer .. Is it possible to make an entity this way, and fill it with data received from an object? (In this case a WCF, but could also be a predefined model class/xml data) If the web service retured a Customer object I could do something like this with a dataset: Make an unbound table and do a loop through the customer properties adding them to a temp row, add it with tbl_Customer.Addtbl_CustomerRow(customerRow) to get my view filled. thanks, nakori

• Django data migration when changing a field to ManyToMany

  I have a Django application in which I want to change a field from a ForeignKey to a ManyToManyField. I want to preserve my old data. What is the simplest/best process to follow for this? If it matters, I use sqlite3 as my database back-end. If my summary of the problem isn't clear, here is an example. Say I have two models: class Author(models.Model): author = models.CharField(max_length=100) class Book(models.Model): author = models.ForeignKey(Author) title = models.CharField(max_length=100) Say I have a lot of data in my database. Now, I want to change the Book model as follows: class Book(models.Model): author = models.ManyToManyField(Author) title = models.CharField(max_length=100) I don't want to "lose" all my prior data. • Generate POCO classes in different project to the project with Entity Framework model

  I'm trying to use the Repository Pattern with EF4 using VS2010. To this end I am using POCO code generation by right clicking on the entity model designer and clicking Add code generation item. I then select the POCO template and get my classes. What I would like to be able to do is have my solution structured into separate projects for Entity (POCO) classes and another project for the entity model and repository code. This means that my MVC project could use the POCO classes for strongly typed views etc and not have to know about the repository or have to have a reference to it. To plug it all together I will have another separate project with interfaces and use IoC. Sounds good in my head I just don't know how to generate the classes into their own project! I can copy them and then change the namespaces on them but I wanted to avoid manual work whenever I change the schema in the db and want to update my model. Thanks
