• List modification in Python

  We are given an algorithm to modify a list of numbers from 1 to 28. There are 5 steps in the algorithm. We have written functions for each step (all correct). We need to write a function that combines all 5 steps. The algorithm modifies the list to get a value. Each time you get a new value, you use the list created by the algorithm from the previous step. This is what we have gotten so far for the code: get_card_at_top_index(insert_top_to_bottom(triple_cut((move_joker_2( move_joker_1(deck)))))) When we run the code to generate the get_card_at_top_index, the first answer is correct. However, the rest are not. Instead of using from the new list, python uses the value that it generated from the last step. What did we do wrong? UPDATE: The other 5 codes passed the tests, they are correct. Code 1 (List) = list1 Code 2 (list1) = list2 Code 3 (list2) = list3 Code 4 (list3) = list4 Code 5 (list4) = list5 we generate a number from 5. We need to run the algorithm again to generate 25 more numbers. We will use list 5 start from step 1

  I am at the moment working with some assembler code for the Sparc processor family, and i am having some truble with a piece of code.. I think the code and output explains more, but in the short.. • Is it good practise to blank out inherited functionality that will not be used?

  I'm wondering if I should change the software architecture of one of my projects. I'm developing software for a project where two sides (in fact a host and a device) use shared code. That helps because shared data, e.g. enums can be stored in one central place. I'm working with what we call a "channel" to transfer data between device and host. Each channel has to be implemented on device and host side. We have different kinds of channels, ordinary ones and special channels which transfer measurement data. My current solution has the shared code in an abstract base class. From there on code is split between the two sides. As it has turned out there are a few cases when we would have shared code but we can't share it, we have to implement it on each side. The principle of DRY (don't repeat yourself) says that you shouldn't have code twice. My thought was now to concatenate the functionality of e.g. the abstract measurement channel on the device side and the host side in an abstract class with shared code. That means though that once we create an actual class for either the device or the host side for that channel we have to hide the functionality that is used by the other side. Is this an acceptable thing to do: public abstract class MeasurementChannelAbstract { protected void MethodUsedByDeviceSide() { } protected void MethodUsedByHostSide() { } } public class DeviceMeasurementChannel : MeasurementChannelAbstract { public new void MethodUsedByDeviceSide() { base.MethodUsedByDeviceSide(); } } Now, DeviceMeasurementChannel is only using the functionality for the device side from MeasurementChannelAbstract. By declaring all methods/members of MeasurementChannelAbstract protected you have to use the new keyword to enable that functionality to be accessed from the outside. Is that acceptable or are there any pitfalls, caveats, etc. that could arise later when using the code?

  I am currently implementing a credit card processing script, most as provided by the merchant gateway. The code calls functions within a class and returns a string based on the response. • jQuery/Javascript Cookies and variable returning with value [object Object]

  I am attempting to set a cookie to a site using jQuery, ONLY if the user came from a specific site. In this case, lets use -http://referrersite.com- as the site they must come from for the cookie to be created as an example. The cookie value is being stored in a variable and everything up to this point is working fine. There is a conditional statement checking whether the user came from the referred site, if the cookie exists already and if the cookie doesn't exist and the user did not come from the referred site. If the user came from the referred site the cookie is created and stored in a variable. If the cookie already exists, it is then stored in a variable. If the cookie does not exist and the user did not come from the referred site I am assigning the variable a static string of characters - this is where the issue lies. When the variable is alerted from the non referred site and no existing cookie, it returns: [object Object], not the static string of characters. • Real time content editing html5

  So I've seen things like WordPress and FCKEditor, and basically a bunch of stuff that uses external code that I can't see or edit. Whenever I ask about editing and saving the content of a page in real time I just get referenced to an API or I get handed code that only changes the page until it's reloaded. What I want to know is how do I code it myself? I want to add real time content editing to a page without the use of someone else's code. I've checked out code for various forums and wikipedia and whatnot, and all of it references code I don't have access to. Is this a thing? Can I edit a page in real time? I thought of writing the edited text to a file on the server, and then when they click save, reading it back into the code to the section they were editing, but I don't know how to do that or if it's even possible. As a side note, I'm very new to html, but not new to coding. EDIT: The structure can be very much like Wikipedia, it doesn't have to be real time, it just has to work

• How to get Passive FTP Working Through an Iptables Firewall?

  I have an iptables firewall running on a Fedora Linux server that is basically being used as a firewall router and OpenVPN server. That's it. We have been using the same iptables firewall code for YEARS. I did make some changes on 21 December to re-route a mySQL port, but given what has happened I've completely backed those changes out. Sometime after those changes were made and backed out passive FTP, served from a vsftpd process, stopped working. We use a passive ftp client to FLING (that's the name of the ftp client running under Windows! :-) ) images from our remote telescopes to our server. I believe it is something in the firewall code because I can drop the firewall and the FTP file transfer (and connecting to the ftp site with Internet Explorer to see the file list) works. When I raise the iptables firewall, it stops working. Again, this is code that we'd been using for years. However, I felt that maybe there was something I missed, so we had a .bak file from 2009 that I used. Same behavior, passive ftp does not work. So, I went and rebuilt the firewall code line by line to see what line was causing the problem. Everything worked until I put the line -A FORWARD -j DROP in very near the end. Of course, if I am correct, this is the line that basically "turns on" the firewall, saying drop everything except for the exceptions I've made above. However, this line has been in the iptables code probably since 2003. So, I'm at the end of my rope, and I still can't figure out why this has stopped working. I guess I need an expert on iptables configuration.   I am very new to WPF and needed some pointers as to why this is not working correctly. I am trying to make a maximize button that will change to a restore button when clicked. I thought a toggle button with 2 different styles that would be changed in the code behind could work. I am first trying to get the maximize button working and have ran into a problem. I get the error 'System.Windows.Controls.Image' is not a valid value for the 'System.Windows.Controls.Image.Source' property on a Setter. in my xaml. I seem to be not understanding something completely. • TFS and shared projects in multiple solutions

  Our .NET team works on projects for our company that fall into distinct categories. Some are internal web apps, some are external (publicly facing) web apps, we also have internal Windows applications for our corporate office users, and Windows Forms apps for our retail locations (stores). Of course, because we hate code reuse, we have a ton of code that is shared among the different applications. Currently we're using SVN as our source control, and we've got our repository laid out like this: - = folder, | = Visual Studio Solution -SVN - Internet | Ourcompany.com | Oursecondcompany.com - Intranet | UniformOrdering website | MessageCenter website - Shared | ErrorLoggingModule | RegularExpressionGenerator | Anti-Xss | OrgChartModule etc... So.. The OurCompany.com solution in the Internet folder would have a website project, and it would also include the ErrorLoggingModule, RegularExpressionGenerator, and Anti-Xss projects from the shared directory. Similarly, our UniformOrdering website solution would have each of these projects included in the solution as well. We prefer to have a project reference to a .dll reference because, first of all, if we need to add or fix a function in the ErrorLoggingModule while working on the OurCompany.com website, it's right there. Also, this allows us to build each solution and see if changes to shared code break any other applications. This should work well on a build server as well if I'm correct. In SVN, there is no problem with this. SVN and Visual Studio aren't tied together in the way TFS's source control is. We never figured out how to work this type of structure in TFS when we were using it, because in TFS, the TFS project was always tied to a Visual Studio Solution. The Source Code repository was a child of the TFS Project, so if we wanted to do this, we had to duplicate the Shared code in each TFS project's source code repository. As my co-worker put it, this "breaks every known best practice about code reuse and simplicity". It was enough of a deal breaker for us that we switched to SVN. Now, however, we're faced with truly fixing our development processes, and the Application Lifecycle Management of TFS is pretty close to exactly what we want, and how we want to work. Our one sticking point is the shared code issue. We're evaluating other commercial and open source solutions, but since we're already paying for TFS with our MSDN Subscriptions, and TFS is pretty much exactly what we want, we'd REALLY like to find a way around this issue. Has anybody else faced this and come up with a solution? If you've seen an article or posting on this that you can share with me, that would help as well. As always, I'm open to answers like "You're looking at it all wrong, bonehead, HERE'S the way it SHOULD be done.

• How do I remove the namespaces in Zend_Soap?

  Hi There I am trying to use the tranlsation webservice from MyMemory: http://mymemory.translated.net/doc/spec.php Unfortunately, Zend_Soap_Client does generate an XML reqest object that is not recognized by the service. I guess it is because of the ns1-Attribute (Namespace) within the tags. So does anyone know how to remove them? • Firefox logs invalid URL?

  I'm writing an extension for firefox. Using dom.location to keep track of visited search results pages, i'm getting this url http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=hi&aq=f&aqi=&oq=&fp=642c18fb4411ca2e . If you click it, the google search results for "hi" should come up. You'll know that from the title bar - because the rest of the page won't load. This happens with any google search. Oddly enough, if you cut part of it off, so say, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=hi - it works! But Googling "hi" myself does give me a longish URL - http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=hi&aq=f&aqi=&oq=&fp=db658cc5049dc510 . I know for a fact that the first time that URL was visited, the page loaded, I did it myself. Can anyone make reason out of this? I just tried my experiment again, this time saving the original URL in the location bar. It turns out, dom.location.href is giving a different value. How is this happening? • Reusing xalan transformer causing its extension functions break

  I am using xalan 2.7.1 to validate my xml docs with xslt style sheet. It works fine for the first document and returns error message in case of error along with correct line and column number of xml source by making use of NodeInfo.lineNumber and NodeInfo.columnNumber extensions. The problem is when I try to reuse transformer to validate other xml docs, it successfully transforms the document but always returns lineNumber=columnNumber=-1 for all errors. Any idea? • Installing my sdist from PyPI puts the files in the wrong places

My problem is that when I upload my Python package to PyPI, and then install it from there using pip, my app breaks because it installs my files into completely different locations than when I simply install the exact same package from a local sdist. Installing from the local sdist puts files on my system like this: /Python27/ Lib/ site-packages/ gloopy-0.1.alpha-py2.7.egg/ (egg and install info files) data/ (images and shader source) doc/ (html) examples/ (.py scripts that use the library) gloopy/ (source) This is much as I'd expect, and works fine (e.g. my source can find my data dir, because they lie next to each other, just like they do in development.) I also includes duplicate references to the same data / doc / examples directories as are mentioned in the MANIFEST.in, because I understand this is required in order for these files to be copied from the sdist to the system during install. • Unable to disable generation of sources JAR with maven-release-plugin

  I am trying to release a web project using Maven 2.2.1 and the maven-release-plugin 2.0-beta-9, but it always fails when doing release:perform on generating the sources jar for the EAR project, which makes sense since the EAR project doesn't have any source. • embedded Italic, bold fonts don't look the same in flex as in Windows...

  ...unless they're something like "Times New Roman" or some other established font with a fully designed italic and bold, presumably in seperate files. Let me explain what I mean (though why no one has commented on this before I have no idea.) Numerous, numerous fonts do not have a seperate file for italic and bold, and in fact to the best of my knowledge don't even have italic and bold defined as such. But if you install them on windows (for example) and then use them in an app, You can still make use of italic and bold with those fonts. For italic, and oblique angle is just given to it, presumably by Windows, and it looks the same in all Windows apps, and the bold is just given a heavier weight. OK, well here's the problem: if you embed a font like that in a Flex app, as a "SystemFont" the italic and bold will not look the same as they do in Windows. Specifically, the oblique angle is invariably much less than in Windows (i.e the italic slant is much less) and the bold version is not bold enough. I vaguely recall thinking that there was some flex mechanism to assign custom oblique angles for italic (and weight for bold) but now can't recall what it is. Does anyone know the correct established way to do this. The following is actually a seperate (but related) font question (in case anyone is expert in all this.) Its rather a lengthy question and can be skipped, but its something that's plagued me for a long time. If you try to embed one of the aformentioned single file fonts as a Source file (as opposed to SystemFont) and specify fontStyle='italic', then the mxmlc compiler will return an error and say there is no italic info in the font file. So up to now I have only been embedding these fonts as "SystemFont". The problem is, flex uses two different font compilers internally for Source embedding and SystemFont embedding. For source font embeds it uses the "Batik" compiler and for SystemFont, the JRE (Java Runtime) font compiler. Well actually the Batik is considered a superior compiler and generally produces better looking fonts. And also if you mix normal fonts compiled with Batik and italic compiled with JRE, sometimes the line spacing is different for the two, and it doesn't look right. So does anyone have an idea how to get mxmlc to do italic and bold for these single file fonts when embedding as "Source". Would there be a way using C++ or whatever to construct an "italic" font file from the SystemFont for such a font in windows.

• RMI applet is making requests on random ports and blocked consequently
