• Handle exceptions with WPF and MVVM

  I am attempting to build an application using WPF and the MVVM pattern. I have my Views being populated from my ViewModel purely through databinding. I want to have a central place to handle all exceptions which occur in my application so I can notify the user and log the error appropriately. I know about Dispatcher.UnhandledException but this does not do the job as exception that occur during databinding are logged to the output windows. Because my View is databound to my ViewModel the entire application is pretty much controlled via databinding so I have no way to log my errors. Is there a way to generically handle the exceptions raised during databinding, without having to put try blocks around all my ViewModel public's? Example View: <Window x:Class="Test.TestView" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="TestView" Height="600" Width="800" WindowStartupLocation="CenterScreen"> <Window.Resources> <BooleanToVisibilityConverter x:Key="BooleanToVisibilityConverter" /> </Window.Resources> <StackPanel VerticalAlignment="Center"> <Label Visibility="{Binding DisplayLabel, Converter={StaticResource BooleanToVisibilityConverter}}">My Label</Label> </StackPanel> </Window> The ViewModel: public class TestViewModel { public bool DisplayLabel { get { throw new NotImplementedException(); } } } It is an internal application so I do not want to use Wer as I have seen previously recommended.

• "Error generating Win32 resource" in Visual Studio, Windows 7 x64

  My co-developers and I recently upgraded machines to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Some of us are seeing a new error we used to never see when building solutions in Visual Studio (happens in both 2008 and 2010): Error generating Win32 resource: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. It always points to some temp file in our output folder, for example: MyProject\obj\Debug\CSC5123.tmp This happens about once every four or so builds. We then will try to run the same exact build again, and it will usually succeed. In some cases though, it will fail again on the same project, and in same cases, it will fail on a different project. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. But it's very frustrating, especially when it doesn't happen until the build has been running for 20 or so seconds. This also doesn't happen to all of our coworkers. It happens to about one out of four developers. For the one, it happens about one of four builds, and for the other three, it never happens. Oh, and did I mention we're all using machines built from the same image? :) Thanks in advance for any direction you can provide.

• ANTLR AST rules fail with RewriteEmptyStreamException

  I have a simple grammar: grammar sample; options { output = AST; } assignment : IDENT ':=' expr ';' ; expr : factor ('*' factor)* ; factor : primary ('+' primary)* ; primary : NUM | '(' expr ')' ; IDENT : ('a'..'z')+ ; NUM : ('0'..'9')+ ; WS : (' '|'\n'|'\t'|'\r')+ {$channel=HIDDEN;} ; Now I want to add some rewrite rules to generate an AST. From what I've read online and in the Language Patterns book, I should be able to modify the grammar like this: assignment : IDENT ':=' expr ';' -> ^(':=' IDENT expr) ; expr : factor ('*' factor)* -> ^('*' factor+) ; factor : primary ('+' primary)* -> ^('+' primary+) ; primary : NUM | '(' expr ')' -> ^(expr) ; But it does not work. Although it compiles fine, when I run the parser I get a RewriteEmptyStreamException error. Here's where things get weird. If I define the pseudo tokens ADD and MULT and use them instead of the tree node literals, it works without error. tokens { ADD; MULT; } expr : factor ('*' factor)* -> ^(MULT factor+) ; factor : primary ('+' primary)* -> ^(ADD primary+) ; Alternatively, if I use the node suffix notation, it also appears to work fine: expr : factor ('*'^ factor)* ; factor : primary ('+'^ primary)* ; Is this discrepancy in behavior a bug?

• Sharing an assembly between ASP.NET and Silverlight

  Hi, I've created an assembly to share it between my main app and the silverlight app. At the beginning it looked like it was going to work but now I get this exception: "System.IO.FileNotFoundException was caught, Message="Could not load file or assembly 'System.Xml.Linq". I'm using .NET 3.5 Sp1 and Silverlight 3. That shared assembly uses System.Xml.Linq, and it cannot find it... I think because it is trying to find that version in the .NET framework instead looking in the silverlight one. How can I fix this? Cheers. • Using pinvoke in c# to call sprintf and friends on 64-bit

  I am having an interesting problem with using pinvoke in C# to call _snwprintf. It works for integer types, but not for floating point numbers. This is on 64-bit Windows, it works fine on 32-bit.   I'm writing a custom web part that extends DataFormWebPart. public class MyCustomWebPart : DataFormWebPart{ // other methods public override void DataBind() { XmlDataSource source = new XmlDataSource() { Data = @" <Person> <name cap='true'>Bryan</name> <occupation>student</occupation> </Person> " }; DataSources.Add(source); base.DataBind(); } } The only noticeable thing I do is overriding the DataBind() method, where I use xml as the data source. After I deploy the web part, I set the following XSL to it: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:output method="xml" version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" indent="yes"/> <xsl:template match="/"> <xmp> <xsl:copy-of select="*"/> </xmp> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> This xsl will surround the input xml with a tag . So I expected the web part to display the original xml data as I wrote in C# code behind. But what shows up in the web part is this: <Person> <name cap="true" /> <occupation /> </Person> All the values within the inner-most tags disappear. What's going on? Can anybody help me? Thanks.

• How to support 3-byte UTF-8 Characters in ANT

  I am trying to support UTF-8 characters in my ANT script. As long as the character string are made up of 2-byte UTF-8 characters, such as: Lògìñ Ùsèr ÌÐ Then things work fine. When I use Unicode Han Character: ? Which, according to this site: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/6211/index.htm Has a UTF-8 encoding of 0xE6 0x88 0x91 I can see in UltraEdit, my input properties file has the values "E6 88 91" all in a row, so I'm fairly confident that my input is correct. And When I open the same file in Notepad++ I can see all the characters correctly.   Many data analysts that I respect use version control. A brief overview: I'm a social scientist who uses R to analyse data for research publications. I don't currently produce R packages. My R code for a project typically includes a few thousand lines of code for data input, cleaning, manipulation, analyses, and output generation. Publications are typically written using LaTeX. With regards to version control there are many benefits which I have read about, yet they seem to be less relevant to the solo data analyst. Backup: I have a backup system already in place. Forking and rewinding: I've never felt the need to do this, but I can see how it could be useful (e.g., you are preparing multiple journal articles based on the same dataset; you are preparing a report that is updated monthly, etc) Collaboration: Most of the time I am analysing data myself, thus, I woudln't get the collaboration benefits of version control. There are also several potential costs involved with adopting version control: Time to evaluate and learn a version control system A possible increase in complexity over my current file management system However, I still have the feeling that I'm missing something. General guides on version control seem to be addressed more towards computer scientists than data analysts. Thus, specifically in relation to data analysts in circumstances similar to those listed above: Is version control worth the effort? What are the main pros and cons of adopting version control? What is a good strategy for getting started with version control for data analysis with R (e.g., examples, workflow ideas, software, links to guides)?

I.e to check if really the Queue is initialised or not. It is. The right variables are stored and et. all [I inserted a value in that Q, that part of the code is not shown] But the second writeline is not giving the right expected answer: It serializes the entire Queue to 00-00-00.   Hi All, I'm trying to call a PSExec task from CC.NET and running into some difficulties. The PSExec task is kicked off and the Joel.bat file is executed. I get some information in the build log about exit codes, but the task is successful. Here's the build log output. PsExec v1.97 - Execute processes remotely Copyright (C) 2001-2009 Mark Russinovich Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com C:\Utilities\Joel.bat exited with error code 0. The second time I force the build I get the dreaded "The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)" error message. I can't ever run the build more than once More so, if I try to shut down the cruise control .net service from within the services MSC, it can't. It's like there's a lock somewhere that is taken and not released. The only way I can kill the service is by killing the ccservices.exe process. I've tried the exact same thing using an nant task and gotten the exact same results. It works the first time, and fails the second and I can't shutdown the process. I'm not sure if this is an issue with CC.NET or with PSEXEC (or me of course). Anybody got any ideas? I'm posting to the CC.NET forums as well. I'm using the latest and greatest of PSExec and 1.4.4 of CC.NET. Thx, Joel

• Creating a 'Custom Designer' Visual Studio 2010 Add-in

  A major part of our work is creating and manipulating certain XML files, for which have a custom editor. The editor is starting to get creaky and we are looking at building a replacement. Since VS2010 has recently arrived, ostensibly with an improved add-in architecture (MEF?), I am interested in the possibility of building the editor as a custom editor within Visual Studio. It would have to appear in the same way as the code editor or the Designer - a tab item, of which there can be many open at once, containing the GUI we use to edit the files. It would integrate with VS's Edit menu. It could use the output window to display messages. It would appear the same as any other editor within Visual Studio. Right now, I am looking for examples of add-ins that work in a similar way - ideally with source code - to see whether this model would suit our requirements. I am also looking for any documentation or tutorials relevant to creating a VS2010 add-in, or information about VS2008 add-ins if this is still relevant. Any input is welcome. Thanks!

  Hi, So I am compressing my output stream via an action filter: var response = filterContext.HttpContext.Response; response.Filter = new DeflateStream(response.Filter), CompressionMode.Compress); Which works great. Now, I would also like to remove the excess whitespace present. I found Mads Kristensen's http module http://madskristensen.net/post/A-whitespace-removal-HTTP-module-for-ASPNET-20.aspx. I added the WhitespaceFilter class and added a new filter like the compression: var response = filterContext.HttpContext.Response; response.Filter = new WhitepaperFilter(response.Filter); This also works great. However, I seem to be having problems combining the two! I tried: var response = filterContext.HttpContext.Response; response.Filter = new DeflateStream(new WhitespaceFilter(response.Filter), CompressionMode.Compress); However this results in some major issues. The html gets completely messed up and sometimes I get an 330 error. It seems that the Whitespace filter write method gets called multiple times. The first time the html string is fine, but on subsequent calls its just random characters. I thought it might be because the stream had been deflated, but isnt the whitespace filter using the untouched stream and then passing the resulting stream to the DeflateStream call? Any ideas?

I have setup 2 VMs on it, namely, "dev.mydomain.com" and "web.mydomain.com" with ips 195.X.X.2 and 195.x.x.3 respectively. For network the VMs connect through xendbr0 (xen-bridge), and can accces the network properly. I can also login to the VMs with ssh with no issue. However when I ping any of the VMs, there is a high amount of periodic packet drop. If I the ping the xen host (dom0) there is no packet drop.   I'm starting a process within my C# application which runs a console application. I've redirected standard input and output, and am able to read a few lines via StandardOutput.ReadLine(). I'm convinced I have the ProcessStartInfo configured correctly. The console application, when started, outputs a few lines (ending with a "marker" line) and then waits for input. After receiving the input, it again outputs a few lines (ending again with a "marker" line), and so on. My intention is to read lines from it until I receive the "marker" line, at which point I know to send the appropriate input string. My problem is that, after several iterations, the program hangs. Pausing the debugger tends to place the hang within a call to StandardOutput.EndOfStream. This is the case in the following test code: while (!mProcess.StandardOutput.EndOfStream) // Program hangs here. { Console.WriteLine(mProcess.StandardOutput.ReadLine()); } When I'm testing for the "marker" line, I get the same kind of hang if I attempt to access StandardOutput.EndOfStream after reading the line: string line = ""; while (!isMarker(line)) { line = mProcess.StandardOutput.ReadLine(); } bool eos = mProcess.StandardOutput.EndOfStream; // Program hangs here. • Code Golf: Collatz Conjecture

  Inspired by http://xkcd.com/710/ here is a code golf for it. The Challenge Given a positive integer greater than 0, print out the hailstone sequence for that number. The Hailstone Sequence See Wikipedia for more detail.. If the number is even, divide it by two. If the number is odd, triple it and add one. Repeat this with the number produced until it reaches 1. (if it continues after 1, it will go in an infinite loop of 1 -> 4 -> 2 -> 1...) Sometimes code is the best way to explain, so here is some from Wikipedia function collatz(n) show n if n > 1 if n is odd call collatz(3n + 1) else call collatz(n / 2) This code works, but I am adding on an extra challenge. The program must not be vulnerable to stack overflows. So it must either use iteration or tail recursion. Also, bonus points for if it can calculate big numbers and the language does not already have it implemented. • Installing python-mysql with wamp's mysql

  Hello, (I'm not sure if this should be asked here or SU.. but seeing this question on SO, I am asking it here...) I have wamp (mysql-5.1.33) server setup on my vista machine, and I am trying to install python-mysql 1.2.3c1 to use the mysql version provided by wamp. At first, when I ran python setup.py install, I got an error saying it couldn't find the location of the mysql's bin folder. Looking into setup_windows.py, I noticed it was looking for a registry key and so I added that registry entry and I think it is able to find it now. But now, when I run python setup.py install, I get a different error saying Unable to find vcvarsall.bat. Any help on installing this appreciated.   I have a GridView bound to an ObjectDataSource. I've got it supporting editing as well, which works just fine. However, I'd like to safely HtmlEncode text that is displayed as we do allow special characters in certain fields. This is a cinch to do with standard BoundFields, as I just set HtmlEncode to true. But in order to setup validation controls, one needs to use TemplateFields instead. How do I easily add HtmlEncoding to output this way? This is an ASP.NET 2.0 project, so I'm using the newer data binding shortcuts (e.g. Eval and Bind).   So I'm fetching a JSON string from a php script in my iPhone app using: NSURL *baseURL = [NSURL URLWithString:@"test.php"]; NSError *encodeError = [[NSError alloc] init]; NSString *jsonString = [NSString stringWithContentsOfURL:baseURL encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error:&encodeError]; NSLog(@"Error: %@", [encodeError localizedDescription]); NSLog(@"STRING: %@", jsonString); The JSON string validates when I test the output. Now I'm having an encoding issue. When I fetch a single echo'd line such as: { "testKey":"é" } (I'm aware I could\should be using NSUrlConnection for asynchronous fetching of data, but at this point in the app development, I don't really need it.) The JSON parser works fine and I am able to create a valid JSON object. However, when I fetch my 2MB JSON string, I get presented with: Error: Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 261.) and a Null string. My PHP file is UTF8 itself and I am not using utf8_encode() because that seems to double encode the data since I'm already pulling the data as NSUTF8StringEncoding. Either way, in my single-echo test, it's the approach that allowed me to successfully log \ASDAS style UTF8 escapes when building the JSON object. What could be causing the error in the case of the larger string? Also, I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I'm using the php function addslashes() on my parsed php data to account for quotes and such when building the JSON string.

  I'd like to parse status.dat file for nagios3 and output as xml with a python script. The xml part is the easy one but how do I go about parsing the file? Use multi line regex? It's possible the file will be large as many hosts and services are monitored, will loading the whole file in memory be wise? I only need to extract services that have critical state and host they belong to. Any help and pointing in the right direction will be highly appreciated.   I'm trying to perform an integration test via Watir and RSpec. So, I created a test file within /integration and wrote a test, which adds a test user into a base via factory_girl. The problem is — I can't actually perform a login with my test user. The test I wrote looks as following: ... before(:each) @user = Factory(:user) @browser = FireWatir::Firefox.new end it "should login" @browser.text_field(:id, "username").set(@user.username) @browser.text_field(:id, "password").set(@user.password) @browser.button(:id, "get_in").click end ... As I'm starting the test and see a "performance" in browser, it always fires up a Username is not valid error. I've started an investigation, and did a small trick. First of all I've started to have doubts if the factory actually creates the user in DB. So after the immediate call to factory I've put some puts User.find stuff only to discover that the user is actually in DB. Ok, but as user still couldn't have logged in I've decided to see if he's present in DB with my own eyes. I've added a sleep right after a factory call, and went to see what's in the DB at the moment. I was crushed to see that the user is actually missing there! How come? Still, when I'm trying to output a user within the code, he is actually being fetched from somewhere. So where does the records, made by factory_girl within a runtime lie? Is it test or dev DB? I don't get it. I've 10 times checked if I'm running my Mongrel in test mode (does it matter? I think it does, as I'm trying to tun an integration test) and if my database.yml holds the correct connection specific data. I'm using an authlogic, if that can give any clue (no, putting activate_authlogic doesn't work here).

  I am following this tutorial, I'm using netbeans 6.5.1 http://www.netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/gui-db-custom.html When I get to the part where I create the "new entity class from database", which is in the "Customizing the Master/Detail View" section of the tutoiral. I can't ever compile because I get this error in the task list (and I get a runtime error when I run)... Atleast I think these two are related.
