• Any way to avoid creating a huge C# COM interface wrapper when only a few methods needed?

  Greetings all, I’m working on a C# program that requires being able to get the index of the hot item in Windows 7 Explorer’s new ItemsView control. Fortunately, Microsoft has provided a way to do this through UI Automation, by querying custom properties of the control. Unfortunately, the System.Windows.Automation namespace inexplicably does not seem to provide a way to query custom properties! This leaves me with the undesirable position of having to completely ditch the C# Automation namespace and use only the unmanaged COM version. One way to do it would be to put all the Automation code in a separate C++/CLI module and call it from my C# application. However, I would like to avoid this option if possible, as it adds more files to my project, and I’d have to worry about 32/64-bit problems and such. The other option is to make use of the ComImport attribute to declare the relevant interfaces and do everything through COM-interop. This is what I would like to do. However, the relevant interfaces, such as IUIAutomation and IUIAutomationElement, are FREAKING HUGE. They have hundreds of methods in total, and reference tons and tons of interfaces (which I assume I would have to also declare), almost all of which I will never ever use. I don’t think the UI Automation interfaces are declared in any Type Library either, so I can’t use TLBIMP. Is there any way I can avoid having to manually translate a bajillion method signatures into C# and instead only declare the ten or so methods I actually need? I see that C# 4.0 added a new “dynamic” type that is supposed to ease COM interop; is that at all relevant to my problem? Thanks

• Nagios3: Conditional operators for service checks?

  I'm trying to setup Nagios to monitor my various using hostgroups to define 'machine roles', against which I run services to check the machines by role. However, I'd like to use conditional operators that would enable me to run the service check against an intersection of two host groups, rather than their unions... i.e. using &&, ||, or () operators. For example, imagine I have the following servers: www-eu: Linux WWW (Apache) server, in the EU www-us: Windows WWW (IIS) server, in the US (West coast) ftp-eu: Linux FTP server, in the EU ftp-us: Windows FTP server, in the US I would want to create the following host groups: US-Servers: www-us, ftp-us EU-Servers: www-eu, ftp-eu WWW-Servers: www-us, www-eu FTP-Servers: ftp-us, ftp-eu Now say I'm interested in checking the HTTP response time for my web servers. Then let's say this particular Nagios service is running from the US (West Coast), and that I have a command called *check_http_response_time*. This command will check the responsiveness of the HTTP server, which I can provide an argument which defines the max response time before raising critical. My command might look like: check_http_response_time $HOSTNAME$ 50 Now traditionally, I can run my checks by specifying a list of host or hostgroups. define service{ use local-service hostgroup_name WWW-Servers # Servers = www-us, www-eu servicegroups WWW Checks service_description Check HTTP Response Time check_command check_http_response_time!50 } However, with the above service definition, given my Nagios service is in US West, I could reasonably expect that my EU server will return critical. Really, I want different thresholds for each region (50 for US West, 200 for EU.) I would have to permutate my service for each host and set their custom threshold, or alternatively permutate out my service groups by role & region (i.e. WWW-Servers-EU), and run my specific thresholds against those. Though the latter is better, both are much messier than I'd like... What I would love, and what this post is asking for, is a way to use hostgroups to perform an intersection using conditional logic, rather than a simple union. It might look like: define service{ use local-service hostgroup_name WWW-Servers && US-Servers servicegroups WWW Checks service_description Check HTTP Response Time check_command check_http_response_time!50 } It then would run the check only against servers that are in both WWW-Servers and US-Servers, in my example, just www-us. The benefits of such a feature would be significant for Nagios services configured for large-scale. Is this feature available? If it isn't, will it be available in the future? Is there an alternative way to accomplish this given the most recent Nagios version? Any tips/suggestions are most appreciated! Dave

• Asp.Net application/web service not working on Vista/IIS7: access right problem?

  I have an .Net 3.5 based web service running at http://localhost/serivce.svc/. Then I have a Asp.Net application running at http://localhost/myApp. In Application_Load my App reads some XML configuration from the web service. That works fine on my machine, but: On Vista with IIS7 the request to the web services fails. The web service can be accessed via the browser without any problem. I configured the app pool of my App to run as admin. I added the admin to the IIS_USRS group, but it still cannot access the web service. impersonate=true/false seems not to make a difference.

• How to add a Web Reference to a SSL web service?

  Hi, I have a web service in a C#/3.5 project which has been running fine. This is until I set the "SSL port" in IIS to 443 and set the "IIS - Directory Security - Secure Communications - Require secure channel (SSL)" option to true. Now, the web reference cannot be updated and I cannot add a new web reference to the web service in that site. When I try to view the service in a browse using just HTTP I get the "This page must be viewed over a secure channel" and when viewed with HTTPS on the front I get "This web page not available." Could someone tell me how to get a Web Reference added using Visual Studio to this secure web service, please? Thanks, Matt.

  I want to add a dependency to my service so that it only tries to start after most of the Windows services have started. Can anyone recommend such a service that is unlikely to have been disabled for security reasons on corporate sites. As my service needs the networking services up and running I want to make sure mine starts after these. This service may also be deployed in non-corporate environments so I’m looking for a suitable service that is unlikely to have been disabled by the end user.

• How to stop an Android Service ONLY when there are no other activities in my app running?

  Is there a way I can test if there are any other activities in my app still alive? I am looking to stop a service in an onDestroy method, but only want to do this if there are no other activities from my app still alive on the stack. I have the call stop the service in the main activity's onDestroy() method. This works perfect EXCEPT that if a user launches my app, then launches a few activities in my app, then hits the home screen and RELAUNCHES my app, they will subvert my order and the main activity will now be above other activities of my app. From this state, if they hit the back button and 'back out' of my home screen they will trigger the onDestroy() method and kill the service even though there are other activities open on the stack. I want to avoid this by stopping the service ONLY if I am sure there are no other activities of mine open on the stack. Possible?

  Map/Reduce is a great concept for sorting large quantities of data at once. What to do if you have small parts of data and you need to reduce it all the time? Simple example - choosing a service for request. Imagine we have 10 services. Each provides services host with sets of request headers and post/get arguments. Each service declares it has 30 unique keys - 10 per set. service A: name id ... Now imagine we have a distributed services host. We have 200 machines with 10 services on each. Each service has 30 unique keys in there sets. but now to find to which service to map the incoming request we make our services post unique values that map to that sets. We can have up to or more than 10 000 such values sets on each machine per each service. service A machine 1 name = Sam id = 13245 ... service A machine 1 name = Ben id = 33232 ... ... service A machine 100 name = Ron id = 777888 ... So we get 200 * 10 * 30 * 30 * 10 000 == 18 000 000 000 and we get 500 requests per second on our gateway each containing 45 items 15 of which are just noise. And our task is to find a service for request (at least a machine it is running on). On all machines all over cluster for same services we have same rules. We can first select to which service came our request via rules filter 10 * 30. and we will have 200 * 30 * 10 000 == 60 000 000. So... 60 mil is definitely a problem... I hope to get on idea of mapping 30 * 10 000 onto some artificial neural network alike Perceptron that outputs 1 if 30 words (some hashes from words) from the request are correct or if less than Perceptron should return 0. And I’ll send each such Perceptron for each service from each machine to gateway. So I would have a map Perceptron <-> machine for each service. Can any one tall me if my Perceptron idea is at least “sane”? Or normal people do it some other way? Or if there are better ANNs for such purposes?

• Unable to host WCF service correctly in IIS7

  I have a WCF Service library written in .NET 4.0. I have a WCF application (in order to host this service in IIS) within the same solution. It contains the WCF library assembly reference and a service.svc file pointing to the service from the library along with a web.config that is a replica of the WCF service library's app.config. The WCF application is set to host the service in IIS7 (the virtual directory has been set). The same solution contains an ASP.NET Webforms solution to which I have added a service reference pointing to the WCF service I hosted in IIS (as mentioned). When i start an instance of this ASP.NET Web application, I get a message saying that "The WCF service has been hosted" and the ASP.NET application can access the data from it correctly. However, when i try and access this data via a service reference added to an MVC 2 Web Application on the same machine in a different solution (pointing to the service hosted in IIS), I get a "The remote server returned an error: (405) Method Not Allowed." protocol exception . However, the MVC application is able to access the service data if I manually invoke an instance of the WCF Application that I was using to host the WCF Service Library from the other solution. I am using VS2010 Beta 2 as my development IDE. I have been stuck with this issue for a while now. Any help would be appreciated. • Where Next for Google Translate? And What of Information Quality?

  Fascinating article in the UK Guardian newspaper called Can Google break the computer language barrier? In it, Andreas Zollman, who works on Google Translate, comments that the quality of Google Translate's output relative to the amount of data required to create that output is clearly now falling foul of the law of diminishing returns. He says: "Each doubling of the amount of translated data input led to about a 0.5% improvement in the quality of the output," he suggests, but the doublings are not infinite. "We are now at this limit where there isn't that much more data in the world that we can use," he admits. "So now it is much more important again to add on different approaches and rules-based models." The Translation Guy has a further discussion on this, called Google Translate is Finished. He says: "And there aren't that many doublings left, if any. I can't say how much text Google has assimilated into their machine translation databases, but it's been reported that they have scanned about 11% of all printed content ever published. So double that, and double it again, and once more, shoveling all that into the translation hopper, and pretty soon you get the sum of all human knowledge, which means a whopping 1.5% improvement in the quality of the engines when everything has been analyzed. That's what we've got to look forward to, at best, since Google spiders regularly surf the Web, which in its vastness dwarfs all previously published content. So to all intents and purposes, the statistical machine translation tools of Google are done. Outstanding job, Googlers. Thanks." Surprisingly, all this analysis hasn't raised that much comment from the fans of machine translation, or its detractors either for that matter. Perhaps, it's the season of goodwill? What is clear to me, however, of course is that Google Translate isn't really finished (in any sense of the word). I am sure Google will investigate and come up with new rule-based translation models to enhance what they have already and that will also scale effectively where others didn't. So too, will they harness human input, which really is the way to go to train MT in the quality direction. But that aside, what does it say about the quality of the data that is being used for statistical machine translation in the first place? From the Guardian article it's clear that a huge humanly translated corpus drove the gains for Google Translate and now what's left is the dregs of badly translated and poorly created source materials that just can't deliver quality translations. There's a message about information quality there, surely. In the enterprise applications space, where we have some control over content this whole debate reinforces the relationship between information quality at source and translation efficiency, regardless of the technology used to do the translation. But as more automation comes to the fore, that information quality is even more critical if you want anything approaching a scalable solution. This is important for user experience professionals. Issues like user generated content translation, multilingual personalization, and scalable language quality are central to a superior global UX; it's a competitive issue we cannot ignore.

• Windows 2008 Standard upgrade to Windows 2008 Enterprise failure

  Sidestory, I was in the process of setting up a second Exchange 2010 server for DAG support, when I realized that my box needed Windows 2008 Enterprise edition. The box currently has Windows 2008 Standard Windows update including SP2 Exchange 2010 with CAS, HT, Mailbox roles Domain Services role File Services role. When I try to upgrade to Windows 2008 Enterprise, I initially got a "your current version of windows is more recent than the intallation media", something to that effect. My first guess was it may be SP2 related, so I uninstalled SP2, restarted and tried again. This time it gave me an error to the effect Windows could not configure one or more windows components. Please restart and try the update again. This was at the last stage of the Windows 2008 Enterprise install when it says "Completing installation". So I removed Domain Services role (including demoting it as a DC). However I get the same error again. Anyone see something like this before and have any suggestions? Also , is there a log file the windows upgrade program spits out that I can consult to see what component exactly is interfering? Update 1 Based on some googling I finally found the setup log file, and it seems that Windows setup had an issue determining the .Net 3.0 "feature" being installed or uninstalled. So based of of a win7/vista technet article I'm going to retry the upgrade after removing the .Net 3.0 feature.

• Cannot log into Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g: ORA-28001

  I can no longer log into Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g. I get this error message: ORA-28001: the password has expired (DBD ERROR: OCISessionBegin) I could log into the server using SQL*Plus. I warned me that the password was going to expire in 7 days (which is not the same as being already expired). Following advice from several documents, I ran these commands from SQL*Plus: ALTER USER sys IDENTIFIED BY new_password; ALTER USER system IDENTIFIED BY new_password; SQL*Plus no longer warns about passwords, but I still cannot use the Enterprise Manager. Then I followed this to remove password expiration: ALTER PROFILE default LIMIT password_life_time UNLIMITED And I've also restarted the Oracle services. In case it was using cached credentials, I've tried to connect from several browsers in several computers. No way: I still get ORA-28001 in Enterprise Manager. What am I missing?   From the unity-panel-service manpages: DESCRIPTION The unity-panel-service program is normally started automatically by the Unity shell (which gets started as a compiz module) and is used to draw panels which can then be used for the global menu, or to hold indicators. How can the unity-panel-service be non-automatically started abnormally? In other words, how is it arbitrarily manually started and/or stopped? The manpage implication is that this can be done without stopping the Unity shell. This answer seems promising: Is it possible to restart the unity panel without restarting compiz? but ... not. And how many believe that they can be? We know that with the right tools, companies can aspire to greatness – and achieve it. Core to this is ensuring their agents have the best tools that give them the right information at the right time, so they can focus on the customer and provide a personalised, professional and efficient service. Today there are multiple channels through which customers can communicate with you; phone, web, chat, social to name a few but regardless of how they communicate, customers expect a seamless, quality experience. Most contact centre agents need to switch between lots of different systems to locate the right information. This hampers their productivity, frustrates both the agent and the customer and increases call handling times. With this in mind, Oracle RightNow has designed and refined a suite of add-ins to optimize the Agent Desktop. • How do I import service references to Unity3D?

  I'm attempting access a service reference in Unity. I need two: the SOAP framework and a separate service called ContentVault. The respective service URL's are: SOAP: http://api.microsofttranslator.com/V2/Soap.svc ContentVault: http://ioun.wizards.com/ContentVault.svc Both services import fine in to Visual Studio. I've tried everything I can think of but they won't work with Unity. I just get various errors (changing depending on which solution I'm trying out). I've attempted using svcutil to export the services as external scripts, but all I got was a bunch of using errors. I've tried converting the code to work with .NET 2.0 to no avail, I've even tried making the services in to .DLL's to no success. How could get these services working with Unity?

• Windows Azure Recipe: Software as a Service (SaaS)

  The cloud was tailor built for aspiring companies to create innovative internet based applications and solutions. Whether you’re a garage startup with very little capital or a Fortune 1000 company, the ability to quickly setup, deliver, and iterate on new products is key to capturing market and mind share. And if you can capture that share and go viral, having resiliency and infinite scale at your finger tips is great peace of mind. Drivers Cost avoidance Time to market Scalability Solution Here’s a sketch of how a basic Software as a Service solution might be built out: Ingredients Web Role – this hosts the core web application. Each web role will host an instance of the software and as the user base grows, additional roles can be spun up to meet demand. Access Control – this service is essential to managing user identity. It’s backed by a full blown implementation of Active Directory and allows the definition and management of users, groups, and roles. A pre-built ASP.NET membership provider is included in the training kit to leverage this capability but it’s also flexible enough to be combined with external Identity providers including Windows LiveID, Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook. The provider model provides extensibility to hook into other industry specific identity providers as well. Databases – nearly every modern SaaS application is backed by a relational database for its core operational data. If the solution is sold to organizations, there’s a good chance multi-tenancy will be needed. An emerging best practice for SaaS applications is to stand up separate SQL Azure database instances for each tenant’s proprietary data to ensure isolation from other tenants. Worker Role – this is the best place to handle autonomous background processing such as data aggregation, billing through external services, and other specialized tasks that can be performed asynchronously. Placing these tasks in a worker role frees the web roles to focus completely on user interaction and data input and provides finer grained control over the system’s scalability and throughput. Caching (optional) – as a web site traffic grows caching can be leveraged to keep frequently used read-only, user specific, and application resource data in a high-speed distributed in-memory for faster response times and ultimately higher scalability without spinning up more web and worker roles. It includes a token based security model that works alongside the Access Control service. Blobs (optional) – depending on the nature of the software, users may be creating or uploading large volumes of heterogeneous data such as documents or rich media. Blob storage provides a scalable, resilient way to store terabytes of user data. The storage facilities can also integrate with the Access Control service to ensure users’ data is delivered securely. Windows Azure Services (9 labs) As applications collaborate across organizational boundaries, ensuring secure transactions across disparate security domains is crucial but difficult to implement. Windows Azure Services provides hosted authentication and access control using powerful, secure, standards-based infrastructure.
