    So I was using Ubuntu when suddenly the whole thing froze up and I had to reboot. And from that moment on, the system when it is starting up, prompts this little selection menu: GNU GRUB version 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu3 Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-10-generic ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-10-generic (recovery mode) Previous Linux versions Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) I have chosen all of the available choices but all I get is another command line system that reads: BusyBox v1.17.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.17.1-10ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs): And honestly I can't do anything with it. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on and how I can get Ubuntu to work again?

  • Problem virtualizing Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit on VirtualBox 3.1 on Windows Vista 64 bit

    Software & Hardware Setup Host System : Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit Guest : Ubuntu 10.04 (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso) 32 bit VM : VirtualBox 3.1.8 Hardware : Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 4GB SDRAM What Happened I followed the tutorial called Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox located here: www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox At first I downloaded ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso because I figured that it would be a perfect fit with my Vista 64 OS. I was wrong because it turns out the my Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 CPU does not have Intel® Virtualization Technology. So I had to go with the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso which is 32 bit. This got me to the point where I could actually create the Ubuntu VM. So I set up the VM in VirtualBox (according to the tutorial I was following) to prepare for the Ubuntu 10.04 virtualization. Please go to my Picassa web album to see the screen shots of my VM settings and Ubuntu boot process so you can see what I experienced (they appear in the order that I experienced them in). www.picasaweb.google.com/rubysiddhi/ProblemVirtualizingUbuntu100432BitOnVirtualBox31OnWindowsVista64# The first 17 images show the VM settings. The last 8 show my attempt at virtualizing Ubuntu 10.04. You can see booting up but ultimately failing. The Specifics The one error message I got was: (process:210): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0) It appeared on a black screen that sort of looked like a Windows console screen but with out the c:\ or the ability to type. Then this error message got more complex when tons of text appeared in the screen. Pictures 23 - 25 in the album show this text. I should also mention that I found this post in the Ubuntu forums by zonination who seemed to have similar problems to mine even though they had a different set up. The main issue I think zonination and me may be having is the fact that we can not change the color mode to 32 bit while it is booting. I think the 16 bit color mode maybe making Ubuntu fail. Not certain though. Well I hope I explained my problem thoroughly and clearly. Thanks for the tutorial. It got me started but, now I hope to finish this process so I can start developing in Ubuntu.     Update #3: Starting over from scratch, shortened this post, decided to re-install a clean copy of Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and go through the walk-through again. So, all the steps go without a hitch. As root: root@ubuntu:~/rubygems-1.3.7# ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [x86_64-linux] root@ubuntu:~/rubygems-1.3.7# gem -v 1.3.7 root@ubuntu:~/rubygems-1.3.7# rails -v Rails 2.3.8 Now, as myself (in a separate term): emptyset@ubuntu:~$ ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [x86_64-linux] emptyset@ubuntu:~$ gem -v /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:10:in `require': no such file to load -- rubygems/defaults (LoadError) from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:10 from /usr/local/bin/gem:8:in `require' from /usr/local/bin/gem:8 emptyset@ubuntu:~$ rails -v bash: /usr/bin/rails: Permission denied So, this appears to be a permissions issue, but I don't understand why. Specifically, if I have to start making things go+rx all over the place, I really need to understand which specific files need the permissions change.

    Symptoms: Server becomes unresponsive - Increase in load, all services stop Loss of connectivity - Ping/SSH Flush MySQL hosts after reboot - As MySQL refuses new connections Intermittent Apache crashes Generally happens early morning hours - 2 days of the week are however excluded Changes made: Updated the OS - to Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS Not sure if the MySQL server was also updated in the process Current MySQL version - mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.63, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 6.1 Updated Plesk from 10.4.4 Update #47 to 11.0.9 Update #23 Rebooted on almost daily basis All crons stopped for the times corresponding to the server crashes Created a MySQL log to monitor the lock times on queries Possible causes: Failing hardware Incorrect software configuration (MySQL, Apache etc) Responsibilities: Small webserver Runs our billing system - WHMCS Responsible for CRONs Bulk-email solution - No delivery times coincide with server crashes Proposed solutions: Move machine over to VM Format and restore the Plesk server backup and take it from there? Side notes: Seems to be a general Apache failure across all our linux servers - Intermittent problem Are we doing something fundamentally wrong in the Apache config? (I understand that this is a secondary question, just making sure that it isnt possibly holding any relevance)

  • Links not opening in Windows 8 applications

    I have just upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 Ultimate with IE9 to Windows 8 with IE 10. When ever I try to open a web link in an application nothing happens. For example in the Windows 8 mail application it makes the email address in an email look like a link. When I click on these with the mouse the link changes to look like I have clicked on it, but aside from that nothing happens. I have tried making sure that IE 10 is my default web browser and been into IE10's settings and associated it with all the usual file types, but still no success. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this? I have a feeling this started when the Browser Choice update ran. I couldn't select which browser to install in that either. The install buttons just flashed when I clicked them and then nothing. PS I would have added an IE10 tag to this post, but apparently I don't have the reputation required to do so.

Based on info I found on StackOverflow, I tried to call the Java app by adding "-Dfile.encoding=UTF-8" at startup. This returns following output Charset = UTF-8 testéörtkuoë But the filename is still "test??rtkuo?" Any help is much appreciated. Stef

    Executing Oracle RAC cluster management commands such as $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin/crs_start requires root permissions. Using Solaris RBAC (Role-Based Access Control), one can give a non-root user permissions to execute those commands, but the commands still fail internally. Example: $pfexec /opt/11.1.0/crs/bin/crs_stop SomeArg CRS-0259: Owner of the resource does not belong to the group. Is there a complete RBAC solution for Oracle RAC or does the executor need to be root? I installed GMP (gmp-4.3.2) and it's in: /usr/local/lib How do I get python/pycrypto to recognize that GMP is already present on my system? Mac OS: 10.6.3 Python version: 2.6.1

  • progressIndicator does not update till about 10 seconds after awakeFromNib occures

    I have been trying to get this one section of my UI to immediatly up date when the document loads into view. The awakeFromNib fires the pasted code and then starts a timer to repeat every 10 seconds... I load a default storage location: ~/Movies... which shows up immediately.. yet the network location that is saved in the document that gets pulled from the XML only seems to show up after the second firing of the - (void)updateDiskSpaceDisplay timer. I have set breakpoints and know that the ivars that contain the values that are being put into the *fileSystemAttributes is the network location right when the awakeFromNib occurs... Im confused why it magically appears after the second time firing instead of immediately displaying the write values. - (void)updateDiskSpaceDisplay { // Obtain information about the file system used on the selected storage path.   • appscript on OSX 10.6.3 / Python 2.6.1

    I am having some trouble getting appscript installed on OS/X 10.6.3 / Python 2.6.1. When I issue sudo easy_install appscript I get "unable to execute gcc-4.2: No such file or directory". Even when I do export CC=/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 (a valid gcc-4.2 executable), easy_install barks. What could be the issue? Disclaimer: OS/X newbie at the helm...

    Hi I was wondering if there is any jquery function around which can take this dateTime "2010-10-18 10:06" and convert and split it returning "2010/10/18" and "10:06". It would be also nice if the same function could either receive "2010-10-18 10:06" or "2010-10-18" only and return as mentioned above, or different formats besides "2010/10/18" like 18-10-2010" or and 18th of October 2010, giving the option but not that important, just curious about jQuery power dealing with dates.   • TTCPServer limited to 10 connections?

    I've created a TCP server NT-Service in Delphi 6, I've tried Indy components, Ararat Synapse components, and am now trying just plain old TTcpServer to see which would perform best while using the least resources. I'm surprised to see that the live instance of the service (running on Windows Server) is still limited to 10 connections! Any new connections are forcibly disconnected. Have I missed something? Do I need to set a property or override a method of TCustomTcpServer?

    I am using M2Eclipse (0.10.0, Maven 3)in projects. I can add Maven dependency using m2eclipse. But dependency jars couldn't be downloaded. Instead, it created a file in each local repo folder named [JAR_Name].jar.lastupdate. The content of this file is some thing like : http\://[REPO_URL]/central/=1276221188566 Even using Maven 3 command line. Jars couldn't be downloaded. Any idea about how could this happen?
