    Is there a book or some other online resource that covers common code-level UI patterns (not widgets/components per se) and idioms. I'm looking for a resource that goes into some depth on MVC, event models, delegates, etc. Something in a similar vein to the POSA series would be excellent. I'm looking for something that is as platform-agnostic as possible, but I'm not sure if that even IS possible.

    I've got a web application that is 99% read-only, with a separate service that updates the database at specific intervals (like every 10 minutes). How can this service tell the application to invalidate it's second-level cache? Is it actually important? (I don't actually care if I have too much stale data) If I don't invalidate the cache how much time is needed to the records to get updated (if using SysCache)

  • Performance optimization for SQL Server: decrease stored procedures execution time or unload the ser

    We have a web service which provides search over hotels. There is a problem with performance: a single request to the service takes around 5000 ms. Almost all of the time is spent in database by executing storing procedures. During the request our server (mssql2008) consumes ~90% of the processor time. When 2 requests are made in parallel the average time grows and is around 7000 ms. When number of request is increasing, the average time of response is increasing as well. We have 20-30 requests per minute. Which kind of optimization is the best in this case having in mind that the goal is to provide stable response time for the service: 1) Try to decrease the stored procedures execution time 2) Try to find the way how to unload the server It is interesting to hear from people who deal with booking sites.

    I have a website that can be accessed from www.blahblah.com and special.blahblah.com. The www site always works but occasionly I get a 'Content controls have to be top-level controls in a content page or a nested master page that references a master page' error on the special site. It's exactly the same code running in both situations and the offending page doesn't even have a master page. Why would it work all the time on one and fail sometimes on the other?

  • Problem creating levels using inherited classes/polymorphism

    I'm trying to write my level classes by having a base class that each level class inherits from...The base class uses pure virtual functions. My base class is only going to be used as a vector that'll have the inherited level classes pushed onto it...This is what my code looks like at the moment, I've tried various things and get the same result (segmentation fault). //level.h class Level { protected: Mix_Music *music; SDL_Surface *background; SDL_Surface *background2; vector<Enemy> enemy; bool loaded; int time; public: Level(); virtual ~Level(); int bgX, bgY; int bg2X, bg2Y; int width, height; virtual void load(); virtual void unload(); virtual void update(); virtual void draw(); }; //level.cpp Level::Level() { bgX = 0; bgY = 0; bg2X = 0; bg2Y = 0; width = 2048; height = 480; loaded = false; time = 0; } Level::~Level() { } //virtual functions are empty...   • Eclipse JFace TreeViewer level auto expansion doesn't work

    According to the Eclipse documentation TreeViewer.setAutoExpandLevel(3) means that top-level elements are expanded, and their children, but not grandchildren. I used that in my code, but after setting the input the tree is not auto-expanded, neither on OS X nor on Linux. Expanding the tree manually (via mouse) works flawlessly. Am I missing anything?

The problem is that all of the templates seem to be geared towards a complete system design as opposed to individual components and are consequently overkill.   • Sharepoint Web performance optimization

    We are running on SSL on following server topology: 1 ISA (SSL Terminate/cache/proxy+AD authentication) 1 Sharepoint 1 IBM DB2 Database as enterprise/corporate DB 1 MS SQL Server as local DB We have recently optimized the caching, compression, minification, and other ASP.net best practices such as viewstate and cookie sizes, minimizing round trips, parallel connections/domain sharding and a lot more.... Now we are not convinced that the we are in an optimized position as the network resources i.e. bandwidth and especially latency are out of our control!! The client/browser to server/sharepoint is trans-Atlantic i.e. (ASIA, USA, EUROPE). As of my understanding the only ways to improve the network (latency) are: - TCP/SSL optimization - hardware/software? - CDNs - cloud or our own ? Your opinion and insights would be much appreciated Best regards Hertzel

    I'm wondering if it would make sense to do some low level or OS stuff(a project) using Java. Reason why I ask is because I would like to expand my knowledge in Java and I'm into doing stuff like file compressor, bulk file renamer, etc. Are there any examples out there that I can look at or play with? Or should I just be using C or C++ instead? Thanks!
