• Installing a new ASP.NET 4.0 site on a Windows 2008 server.

  I have been specifically requested to blog about getting an ASP.NET 4.0 site working on a Windows 2008 server that has never run a 4.0 web site before. Make sure the 4.0 framework is installed on the server! Patch it will ALL the security patches have been applied. ((for a live server, make sure that you tested the patches on your development server first) You will find the HTTP Log status codes at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943891 - they are very important in understandign the IIS logs) After installing, turn on 4.0, by doing the following: Start the Internet Information Services (IIS Manager) Select the server node in the connections pane. (this is the node above Application Pools, FTP Sites and Server Farms) Double click the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions item in the centre pane You should see 1 or 2 ASP.NET v4.0.30319 entries, select Enable in the Actions pane for all of them. ASP.NET 4.0 should now run! Remeber after creating your new 4.0 ASP.NET site. select the Sites node and find out the Id of it. By default, the IIS logs are at C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles and if your site is say 21, then the logs will be created in the W3SVC21 sub-directory. The key point about using these logs is that in the event of an error when trying to start the site for the first time, the log will contain the status code and the sub-code. By having the full code and sub-code, set up issues can be resolved in minutes instead of hours.

• Collision disturbing the jumping mechanic in java 2D game [on hold]

  So I have been working on a 2D Java game recently and everything was going smoothly, until I reached a problem to do with the players jumping mechanic. So far I've got the player to jump a fixed rate and fall due to gravity. • ASP Fails with 500 Error

  We have a server setup as an IIS box and have some static pages with a few asp pages that handle the form submissions. The asp is really vbscript that sends a CDO message. When moving these pages to the new server the form will not submit, it gives a 500 error and the following shows in Event Viewer: Error: The Template Persistent Cache initialization failed for Application Pool 'DefaultAppPool' because of the following error: Could not create a Disk Cache Sub-directory for the Application Pool. The data may have additional error codes.. I can't seem to find any info on this anywhere... I was thinking it may have something to do with the fact that we created this server from an image of another server. Thanks for your help in advance... Vince

• Possible causes for Domain server being unavailable?

  One of our servers was compromised after a user with administrative privileges accidentally loaded a virus from a USB drive on a desktop connected to the domain. The two most obvious symptoms of this were: The server is no longer responding to login attempts The root directory of the drive containing user data has been filled with randomly named empty folders. (Initially it was around a million folders, I've been slowly deleting them.) I've run several virus scans from different vendors and am fairly confident the virus has been removed but the damage is done. I'm hoping the two symptoms are related and that once the directories are gone the server will start responding again. The drive is very slow to respond. I'm deleting about 20k folders at a time. Anymore than that and windows explorer becomes unresponsive. In the event that I finish cleaning up the HD and things don't return to normal what other things can I check?

• XP Laptop Restarting

  I have a Dell 1525 which I reinstalled xp on recently due to a hard disk problem. Apparently I've missed something, it's taken to restarting for no apparent reason (I believe it's too frequent for windows updates which was my first thought). Last night it was particularly bad, it stopped 5 times in 2 hours while playing an online game. I can't actually think of a time it's happened when it's not running something in full screen mode. I can't see anything in the event log apart from usual start up details. How can I find and fix this issue?

• stsadm farm backup exits with ffffffff

  I have a SP2007 farm that uses stsadm through Scheduled Tasks to run farm backups. It always worked fine, however it ran for a couple of seconds one day and just exited with code ffffffff. Looked at Event Viewer, the Sharepoint logs themselves and nothing unusual happened at the time this job ran. No files were created so an spbackup.log doesn't exist. Searched the net for batch files and STSADM return codes but the error message doesn't even exist. Any other recommended place to look for issues like this?

• Netbeans hard freezes Windows XP, how to debug

  I get this problem about once to twice a day while editing in netbeans. I will be editing some code in Netbeans and I get a hard freeze requiring a full reboot. There hasn't been any correlation with an actual event that I can tell. Sometimes it's when I focus, sometimes while typing, sometimes while clicking on another window. I need to figure out how to track down what's causing the problem, as no error is generated when this happens. No error in Netbeans logs or Windows logs. I've also tried letting it sit to see if it recovers, and it's definitely stuck. I haven't had any problems with other apps running JRE, so I'm thinking it's Netbeans itself. I can't submit a bug report because I can't get a log or any reproduce-able explanation of the problem.

In case for a particular cell if it doesn't find "n" which can be assigned to sudoku cell.. it goes back to the previous empty cell and start iterating from where it stopped and assigns the next value and continues, Here comes the function get_back(). it iterates back..

  Background In Excel 2010, for some ridiculous reason, there is no built-in hotkey (or even a button on the toolbar) for subscripting/superscripting text within a text cell. You can, however, highlight the text, right-click the selection, click format, and then check the [x] subscript or [x] superscript checkbox. Question Are there any kinds of excel macros or workarounds to map two keyboard hotkeys to the subscript and superscript keys, respectively? (It should only be, like, two lines of code - one for the event handler and one for the actual procedure call... I would write one myself but my VBA is rusty, at best, and I am pretty confident there is probably already some kind of solution, despite my inability to find one via search engine) Thanks for any help you can provide!

• How to detect an iPhone connecting a network?

  I've noticed through watching Wireshark that when an iPhone connects to a wifi network, it sends out a few IGMP/MDNS packets to 224.0.0.251 (LAN broadcast, I think). Is there any easy way to watch for these packets and then either run a script or send an event? Or, is the best way to just run a packet sniffer? Any simple ones that can send events or execute curl commands when a filter is triggered? • What is involved with writing a lobby server?

  So I'm writing a Chess matchmaking system based on a Lobby view with gaming rooms, general chat etc. So far I have a working prototype but I have big doubts regarding some things I did with the server. Writing a gaming lobby server is a new programming experience to me and so I don't have a clear nor precise programming model for it. I also couldn't find a paper that describes how it should work. I ordered "Java Network Programming 3rd edition" from Amazon and still waiting for shipment, hopefully I'll find some useful examples/information in this book. Meanwhile, I'd like to gather your opinions and see how you would handle some things so I can learn how to write a server correctly. Here are a few questions off the top of my head: (may be more will come) First, let's define what a server does. It's primary functionality is to hold TCP connections with clients, listen to the events they generate and dispatch them to the other players. But is there more to it than that? Should I use one thread per client? If so, 300 clients = 300 threads. Isn't that too much? What hardware is needed to support that? And how much bandwidth does a lobby consume then approx? What kind of data structure should be used to hold the clients' sockets? How do you protect it from concurrent modification (eg. a player enters or exists the lobby) when iterating through it to dispatch an event without hurting throughput? Is ConcurrentHashMap the correct answer here, or are there some techniques I should know? When a user enters the lobby, what mechanism would you use to transfer the state of the lobby to him? • Threads slowing down application and not working properly

  I'm making a software renderer which does per-polygon rasterization using a floating point digital differential analyzer algorithm. My idea was to create two threads for rasterization and have them work like so: one thread draws each even scanline in a polygon and the other thread draws each odd scanline, and they both start working at the same time, but the main application waits for both of them to finish and then pauses them before continuing with other computations. As this is the first time I'm making a threaded application, I'm not sure if the following method for thread synchronization is correct: First of all, I use two global variables to control the two threads, if a global variable is set to 1, that means the thread can start working, otherwise it must not work. This is checked by the thread running an infinite loop and if it detects that the global variable has changed its value, it does its job and then sets the variable back to 0 again. The main program also uses an empty while to check when both variables become 0 after setting them to 1. Second, each thread is assigned a global structure which contains information about the triangle that is about to be rasterized. The structures are filled in by the main program before setting the global variables to 1. My dilemma is that, while this process works under some conditions, it slows down the program considerably, and also it fails to run properly when compiled for Release in Visual Studio, or when compiled with any sort of -O optimization with gcc (i.e. nothing on screen, even SEGFAULTs). The program isn't much faster by default without threads, which you can see for yourself by commenting out the #define THREADS directive, but if I apply optimizations, it becomes much faster (especially with gcc -Ofast -march=native). N.B. It might not compile with gcc because of fscanf_s calls, but you can replace those with the usual fscanf, if you wish to use gcc. Because there is a lot of code, too much for here or pastebin, I created a git repository where you can view it. My questions are: Why does adding these two threads slow down my application? Why doesn't it work when compiling for Release or with optimizations? Can I speed up the application with threads? If so, how? Thanks in advance.

• Receiving a notification on a Cluster Group Failover

  Hi all, I have several Windows Cluster set up and I have the need of keeping track of failovers. I'd need to receive a notification of sort whenever a group fails over. I've seen some examples around, but I can't rely on the approach of just sending a message whenever the resources are stopped/restarted as it would generate too many false alarms. In few words, I need to be notified if and only if the group really fails over. I was thinking that probably the best way is monitoring the System Event Log, but, if possible, I'd prefer not having to write a script/program from scratch for this issue. Is there any script/product that already does it? Thanks.

• Windows 2003 Server Suddenly Drops Connections to everything but PING and port 80 (webserver)

  Hi, I'm running a Windows 2003 Dedicated server, and the box has been rock solid for more than 2 years now. Just recently, I have had an issue where after a certain ammount of time the server will just stop accepting connections on all ports except 80, and still responds to pings. If you surf to a static HTML page on the box, you can display it. If you pull up a PHP file that has an outside database connection, it fails. RDP refuses to connect, and LogMeIn reports that "The connection was reset" The only fix at this time is to have the provider physically reboot my box to correct the issue. The event log doesn't seem to be leaving helpful messages, and I am at a lost to what is causing this error since I have not installed any new software in months on it. Any tips or help would be appreciated to tracking down this issue. I don't mind updating the question as responses come in, I just do not know where to start troubleshooting because it seems random at this time.

• How to verify if my copy operation is complete in Windows 7?

  Yesterday, I was leaving some job of copying a directory to run overnight. This morning however, I found the computer had restarted because of Windows Update or something. I was wondering if there is some way to check if the copy is complete? One way I guess would be check the last modified time of the copy, and when the system restarted. But I was wondering where to find the time when the system restarted? I was also wondering if where to find some logging files that have the records. I know Event Viewer, but don't know where to find within it. Other methods are welcome too. I also would like to hear suggestions for other ways to accomplish the copy instead of just simple copy and paste. Thanks and regards!

• Directory Synchronization

  We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here. • WD: UDMA CRC Errors and Reallocated Sector

  I got a WD Caviar Black 1TB (WD1001FALS) and according to SMART, I got: one "Reallocated Sector" one "Reallocated Event" 26 UDMA CRC Errors in my drive but it's a "Pass" for the "SMART overall-health self assessment test". I think it's because of these, I'm having problems with Grub, and thus can't boot into any OS at all. Are these problems serious? According to "Warranty Services", my drive is still "In Limited Warranty". Would I be eligible for a replacement? FYI: I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

• How to pass dynamic information between a form and a service? [closed]

  I have a design problem and hopefully the braintrust which is stack exchange can help. I have a generic form, which loads a dataset and displays it. It never has direct knowledge of what it contains but can pass it to a service for manipulation (via an Onclick event for example). However, the form might need to alter its behaviour based on the manipulation by the service. Example: The service realises this dataset requires sending of an email by the user and needs to send an instruction to the form to open up a mail form. My idea is thus: I'm thinking about passing back some type of key/name dictionary, filled with commands which the service requires. They could then be interpeted by the form without it need to reference something specific. Example: IF the service decides that the dataset needs to refresh it would send back a key/name pair, I might even be able to chain commands. Refreshing the dataset and sending a mail. Refresh / "Foo" Mail / "[email protected]" The form would reference an action explicitly (Refresh or Mail) but not the instructions themselves. Is this a valid idea or am I wasting time?

  My two displays are: Intel GMA x4500 Laptop (1280x800 native resolution of the built-in display) External display (1920x1080) Few minutes after I login to my dual monitor setup its get reset to mirror screens. If I restore the settings via displays application everything is fine. • When resizing Windows Explorer on Windows 8 it crashes?

  I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes. Also it changes it's size every time into this square size. Here is event viewer result: The program Explorer.EXE version 6.2.9200.16384 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel. • Using remote station as original

  I have 2 computers with totally same Debian, config, apps and other stuff. One at work and another at home. It's inconvenient to maintain the same configuration on these stations - upgrading OS, sync configuration, etc. Is there the way to use my home station as "host", and such a "terminal" at work? As if i have one HDD on 2 computers, but must use they own resources like an videocard and another. Looks like i need some remote tool as VNC, but this is no sessional event, I need to use "terminal" comp like original all of the time.

The team is already working on the Latin America event which takes place in December in Sao Paulo, and an OpenWorld in Asia for 2013 as well. And of course they're already working on the next San Francisco OpenWorld for 2013. So what happens after the conference is over? People pack up demo and network gear and ship it out to wherever it's going next; take down and recycle signage; strike the keynote set, the exhibition and demo halls, the street tents, and anything else that was constructed just for the conference. There's a lot of post-conference analyis going on too. Oracle and partner marketing teams are looking at and following up on the leads they got from booth, demo, and lounge traffic. The events team is evaluating the session and conference surveys you filled out if you attended -- looking to identify the best speakers, what worked and didn't work, how you liked the venues, the food, the entertainment, the presentations. From all of that information will come recommendations for next year on what to keep doing, what to do better, and what not to do at all. • Unable to format/add a partition to Windows XP

  I recently add a 1T disk to an XP machine. I found the disk in the "disk management", I click "initialize" to init it, then creates a primary partition with size 950G, then select quick format to format the disk, the "disk management" will then complains: The disk configuration operation did not complete. Check the system event log for more information on the error. Verify the status of your storage devices before retrying. If that does not solve the problem, close the disk management console, then restart disk management or restart the computer. What could be the reason?

• UNC access to TFS SharePoint doesn't work

  We are using TFS2010 with the SharePoint document portal. We are trying to access the files in SharePoint using UNC paths (e.g. \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject) and it just plain doesn't work. From my workstation, I actually get different behaviours depending on the path. Case 1: Path = \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: windows explorer reports a network error "Windows cannot access \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\" Case 2: Path = \tfs2010.mycompany.com\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: Windows Security dialog pops up asking for my username and password. I tried entering all combinations of my windows username and password (with and without the domain before the username), but no matter what, my credentials are not accepted. I have no problems accessing the SharePoint site through the web portal - it's just UNC which doesn't work. There doesn't seem to be anything relevant in the event viewer on the server. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?
