• Help Protect Your Children with the CEOP Enhanced Internet Explorer 8

  Do you want to make Internet Explorer safer and more helpful for you and family? Then join us as we look at the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) enhanced version of Internet Explorer 8. Setting CEOP Up We chose to install the whole CEOP pack in order to have access to complete set of CEOP Tools. The install process will be comprised of two parts…it will begin with CEOP branded windows showing the components being installed… Note: The components can be downloaded separately for those who only want certain CEOP components added to their browser. Then it will move to the traditional Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 install windows. One thing that we did notice is that here you will be told that you will need to restart your computer but in other windows a log off/log on process is mentioned. Just to make certain that everything goes smoothly we recommend restarting your computer when the installation process is complete. In the EULA section you can see the versions of Windows that the CEOP Pack works with. Once you get past the traditional Microsoft install windows you will be dropped back into the CEOP branded windows. CEOP in Action After you have restarted your computer and opened Internet Explorer you will notice that your homepage has been changed. When it comes to your children that is not a bad thing in this instance. It will also give you an opportunity to look through the CEOP online resources. For the moment you may be wondering where everything is but do not worry. First you can find the two new search providers in the drop-down menu for your “Search Bar” and select a new default if desired. The second thing to look for are the new links that have been added to your “Favorites Menu”. These links can definitely be helpful for you and your family. The third part will require your “Favorites Bar” to be visible in order to see the “Click CEOP Button”. If you have not previously done so you will need to turn on subscribing for “Web Slices”. Click on “Yes” to finish the subscription process. Clicking on the “CEOP Button” again will show all kinds of new links to help provide information for you and your children. Notice that the top part is broken down into “topic categories” while the bottom part is set up for “age brackets”…very nice for helping you focus on the information that you want and/or need. Looking for information and help on a particular topic? Clicking on the “Cyberbullying Link” for example will open the following webpage with information about cyberbullying and a link to get help with the problem. Need something that is focused on your child’s age group? Clicking on the “8-10? Link” as an example opened this page. Want information that is focused on you? The “Parent? Link” leads to this page. The “topic categories & age brackets” make the CEOP Button a very helpful and “family friendly” addition to Internet Explorer. Perhaps you (or your child) want to conduct a search for something that is affecting your child. As you type in a “search term” both of the search providers will provide helpful suggestions for dealing with the problem. We felt that these were very nice suggestions in both instances here… Conclusion We have been able to give you a good peek at what the CEOP Tools can do but the best way to see how helpful it can be for you and your family is try it for yourself. Your children’s safety and happiness is worth it. • $.fadeTo/fadeOut() operations on Table Rows in IE fail

  Here’s a a small problem that one of customers ran into a few days ago: He was playing around with some of the sample code I’ve put out for one of my simple jQuery demos which deals with providing a simple pulse behavior plug-in: $.fn.pulse = function(time) { if (!time) time = 2000; // *** this == jQuery object that contains selections $(this).fadeTo(time, 0.20, function() { $(this).fadeTo(time, 1); }); return this; } it’s a very simplistic plug-in and it works fine for simple pulse animations. However he ran into a problem where it didn’t work when working with tables – specifically pulsing a table row in Internet Explorer. Works fine in FireFox and Chrome, but IE not so much. It also works just fine in IE as long as you don’t try it on tables or table rows specifically. Applying against something like this (an ASP.NET GridView): var sel = $("#gdEntries>tbody>tr") .not(":first-child") // no header .not(":last-child") // no footer .filter(":even") .addClass("gridalternate"); // *** Demonstrate simple plugin sel.pulse(2000); fails in IE. No pulsing happens in any version of IE. After some additional experimentation with single rows and various ways of selecting each and still failing, I’ve come to the conclusion that the various fade operations in jQuery simply won’t work correctly in IE (any version). So even something as ‘elemental’ as this: var el = $("#gdEntries>tbody>tr").get(0);$(el).fadeOut(2000); is not working correctly. The item will stick around for 2 seconds and then magically disappear. Likewise: sel.hide().fadeIn(5000); also doesn’t fade in although the items become immediately visible in IE. Go figure that behavior out. Thanks to a tweet from red_square and a link he provided here is a grid that explains what works and doesn’t in IE (and most last gen browsers) regarding opacity: http://www.quirksmode.org/js/opacity.html It appears from this link that table and row elements can’t be made opaque, but td elements can. This means for the row selections I can force each of the td elements to be selected and then pulse all of those. Once you have the rows it’s easy to explicitly select all the columns in those rows with .find(“td”). Aha the following actually works: var sel = $("#gdEntries>tbody>tr") .not(":first-child") // no header .not(":last-child") // no footer .filter(":even") .addClass("gridalternate"); // *** Demonstrate simple plugin sel.find("td").pulse(2000); A little unintuitive that, but it works. Stay away from <table> and <tr> Fades The moral of the story is – stay away from TR, TH and TABLE fades and opacity. If you have to do it on tables use the columns instead and if necessary use .find(“td”) on your row(s) selector to grab all the columns. I’ve been surprised by this uhm relevation, since I use fadeOut in almost every one of my applications for deletion of items and row deletions from grids are not uncommon especially in older apps. But it turns out that fadeOut actually works in terms of behavior: It removes the item when the timeout’s done and because the fade is relatively short lived and I don’t extensively test IE code any more I just never noticed that the fade wasn’t happening. Note – this behavior or rather lack thereof appears to be specific to table table,tr,th elements. I see no problems with other elements like <div> and <li> items. Chalk this one up to another of IE’s shortcomings. Incidentally I’m not the only one who has failed to address this in my simplistic plug-in: The jquery-ui pulsate effect also fails on the table rows in the same way. sel.effect("pulsate", { times: 3 }, 2000); and it also works with the same workaround. If you’re already using jquery-ui definitely use this version of the plugin which provides a few more options… Bottom line: be careful with table based fade operations and remember that if you do need to fade – fade on columns.© Rick Strahl, West Wind Technologies, 2005-2010Posted in jQuery

• Why do we need fork to create new process

  In Unix whenever we want to create a new process, we fork the current process i.e. we create a new child process which is exactly the same as the parent process and then we do exec system call to replace the child process with a new process i.e. we replace all the data for the parent process eith that for the new process. Why do we create a copy of the parent process in the first place and why don't we create a new process directly? I am new to Unix please explain in lay-man terms.

• ASP.NET 4 Website Fails to Start on Your TFS 2010 Server?

  Getting a “Could not find permission set named ‘ASP.Net’” error on your TFS 2010 server? It may have to do with the fact you’re trying to run ASP.NET as a child site of a SharePoint Web Site. The problem is described in the “ASP.NET 4 braking changes” site:   This error occurs because the ASP.NET 4 code access security (CAS) infrastructure looks for a permission set named ASP.Net. However, the partial trust configuration file that is referenced by WSS_Minimal does not contain any permission sets with that name. Currently there is not a version of SharePoint available that is compatible with ASP.NET. As a result, you should not attempt to run an ASP.NET 4 Web site as a child site underneath SharePoint Web sites.   There is a workaround you could try by setting this in your web.config, if you know what you’re doing: <trust level="Full" originUrl="" />

  Using Java 6, Tomcat 7, Jersey 1.15, Jackson 2.0.6 (from FasterXml maven repo), & www.json.org parser, I am trying to pretty print the JSON String so it will look indented by the curl -X GET command line. Would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

• Eager Loading more than 1 table in LinqtoSql

  When I've tried in Linq2Sql to load table with 2 child tables, I've noticed, that multiple SQLs are generated. I've found that  it isa known issue, if you try to specify more than one to pre-load it just  picks which one to pre-load and which others to leave deferred (simply ignoring those LoadWith hints)There are more explanations in http://codebetter.com/blogs/david.hayden/archive/2007/08/06/linq-to-sql-query-tuning-appears-to-break-down-in-more-advanced-scenarios.aspxThe reason the relationship in your blog post above is generating multiple queries is that you have two (1:n) relationship (Customers->Orders) and (Orders->OrderDetails). • Working with EO composition associations via ADF BC SDO web services

  ADF Business Components support the ability to publish the underlying Application Modules (AMs) and View Objects (VOs) as web services through Service Data Objects (SDOs).  This blog post looks at a minor challenge to overcome when using SDOs and Entity Objects (EOs) that use a composition association. Using the default ADF BC EO association behaviour ADF BC components allow you to work with VOs that are based on EOs that are a part of a parent-child composition association.  A composition association enforces that you cannot create records for the child outside the context of the parent.  As example when creating invoice-lines you want to enforce the individual lines have a relating parent invoice record, it just simply doesn't make sense to save invoice-lines without their parent invoice record. In the following screenshot using the ADF BC Tester it demonstrates the correct way to create a child Employees record as part of a composition association with Departments: And the following screenshot shows you the wrong way to create an Employee record: Note the error which is enforced by the composition association: (oracle.jbo.InvalidOwnerException) JBO-25030: Detail entity Employees with row key null cannot find or invalidate its owning entity.  Working with composition associations via the SDO web services  Shay Shmeltzer recently recorded a good video which demonstrates how to expose your ADF Business Components through the SDO interface. On exposing the VOs you get a choice of operation to publish including create, update, delete and more: For example through the SDO test interface we can see that the create operation will request the attributes for the VO exposed, in this case EmployeesView1: In this specific case though, just like the ADF BC Tester, an attempt to create this record will fail with JBO-25030, the composition association is still enforced: The correct way to to do this is through the create operation on the DepartmentsView1 which also lets you create employees record in context of the parent, thus satisfying the composition association rule: Yet at issue here is the create operation will always create both the parent Departments and Employees records.  What do we do if we've already previously created the parent Departments records, and we just want to create additional Employees records for that Department?  The create method of the EmployeeView1 as we saw previously doesn't allow us to do that, the JBO-3050 error will be raised. The solution is the "merge" operation on the parent Departments record: In this case for the Departments record you just need to supply the DepartmentId of the Department you want the Employees record to be associated with, as well as the new Employees record.  When invoked only the Employees record is created, and the supply of the DepartmentId of the Departments record satisfies the composition association without actually creating or updating the associated Department record that already exists in the database. Be warned however if you supply any more attributes for the Department record, it will result in a merge (update) of the associated Departments record too.

• Mouseover triggered on absolute positioned div

  Objective Have a small magnifying glass icon that appears in the top right corner of a table cell when the table cell is hovered over. Mousing over the magnifying glass icon and clicking it will open a dialog window to show detailed information about the item in that particular table cell. I want to reuse the same icon for hundreds of table cells without recreating it each time. Partial Solution Have a single <span> that is absolutely positioned and hidden. When a _previewable table cell is hovered, the <span> is moved to the correct location and shown. This <span> is also moved in the DOM to be a child of the _previewable table cell. This enables a click handler attached to the <span> to find the _previewable parent, and get information from it's jquery data() object that is used to populate the contents of the dialog. Because the <span> was moved from the <body> to be a child of the cell, it gets thrown out and replaced during the AJAX call. So my first thought is to move the <span> back to the body on mouseout of the table cell, like this: else { // On mouseout, $options is moved back to be a child of body $options.appendTo("body"); $options.hide(); } However, with this, the <span> disappears as soon as it is mouseover. The mouseout event seems to be called on _previewable when the mouse moves into the <span>, even though the <span> is a child of _previewable and fully displayed within the boundaries of the _previewable table cell. At this point, I've only tested this in Chrome. Questions Why would mouseout be called on _previewable, when the mouse is still within the boundaries of _previewable? Is it because the <span> is absolutely positioned? How can I make this work, without recreating the <span> and it's click handler on each AJAX table referesh?

• Can't untar Testdisk 6.14 using live CD

  I'm using an Ubuntu LiveCD right now and need to recover files from a (Windows 7) partition. I've read about TestDisk and tried downloading it and untaring it but: testdisk-6.14-WIP.linux26.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now I don't know why it doesn't work (noob). I tried using sudo apt-get install testdisk but: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package testdisk so.... HELP :D

• Who should control navigation in an MVVM application?

  Example #1: I have a view displayed in my MVVM application (let's use Silverlight for the purposes of the discussion) and I click on a button that should take me to a new page. Example #2: That same view has another button that, when clicked, should open up a details view in a child window (dialog). We know that there will be Command objects exposed by our ViewModel bound to the buttons with methods that respond to the user's click. But, what then? How do we complete the action? Even if we use a so-called NavigationService, what are we telling it? To be more specific, in a traditional View-first model (like URL-based navigation schemes such as on the web or the SL built-in navigation framework) the Command objects would have to know what View to display next. That seems to cross the line when it comes to the separation of concerns promoted by the pattern. On the other hand, if the button wasn't wired to a Command object and behaved like a hyperlink, the navigation rules could be defined in the markup. But do we want the Views to control application flow and isn't navigation just another type of business logic? (I can say yes in some cases and no in others.) To me, the utopian implementation of the MVVM pattern (and I've heard others profess this) would be to have the ViewModel wired in such a way that the application can run headless (i.e. no Views). This provides the most surface area for code-based testing and makes the Views a true skin on the application. And my ViewModel shouldn't care if it displayed in the main window, a floating panel or a child window, should it? According to this apprach, it is up to some other mechanism at runtime to 'bind' what View should be displayed for each ViewModel. But what if we want to share a View with multiple ViewModels or vice versa? So given the need to manage the View-ViewModel relationship so we know what to display when along with the need to navigate between views, including displaying child windows / dialogs, how do we truly accomplish this in the MVVM pattern?

• Basic game architechture best practices in Cocos2D on iOS

  Consider the following simple game: 20 squares floating around an iPhone's screen. Tapping a square causes that square to disappear. What's the "best practices" way to set this up in Cocos2D? Here's my plan so far: One Objective-c GameState singleton class (maintains list of active squares) One CCScene (since there's no menus etc) One CCLayer (child node of the scene) Many CCSprite nodes (one for each square, all child nodes of the layer) Each sprite listens for a tap on itself. Receive tap = remove from GameState Since I'm relatively new to Cocos2D I'd like some feedback on this design. For example I'm unsure of the GameState singleton. Perhaps it's unnecessary.

If two item elements have the same values for all three child elements, they are duplicates. In the above XML, items one and two are duplicates. The rest are unique. As indicated above, each item contains other elements that we do not wish to include in the comparison. 'Uniqueness' should be a factor of those three elements, and those alone. I have attempted to accomplish this through the following: availList/item[not(schDate = preceding:: schDate and schFrmTime = preceding:: schFrmTime and schToTime = preceding:: schToTime)] The idea behind this is to select records where there is no preceding element with the same schDate, schFrmTime and schToTime. However, its output is missing the last item. This is because my XPath is actually excluding items where all of the child element values are matched within the entire preceding document. No single item matches all of the last item's child elements - but because each element's value is individually present in another item, the last item gets excluded. I could get the correct result by comparing all child values as a concatenated string to the same concatenated values for each preceding item. Does anybody know of a way I could do this?

• What is the use of Association, Aggregation and Composition (Encapsulation) in Classes

  I have gone through lots of theories about what is encapsulation and the three techniques of implementing it, which are Association, Aggregation and Composition. What i found is, Encapsulation Encapsulation is the technique of making the fields in a class private and providing access to the fields via public methods. If a field is declared private, it cannot be accessed by anyone outside the class, thereby hiding the fields within the class. For this reason, encapsulation is also referred to as data hiding. Encapsulation can be described as a protective barrier that prevents the code and data being randomly accessed by other code defined outside the class. Access to the data and code is tightly controlled by an interface. The main benefit of encapsulation is the ability to modify our implemented code without breaking the code of others who use our code. With this feature Encapsulation gives maintainability, flexibility and extensibility to our code. Association Association is a relationship where all object have their own lifecycle and there is no owner. Let’s take an example of Teacher and Student. Multiple students can associate with single teacher and single student can associate with multiple teachers but there is no ownership between the objects and both have their own lifecycle. Both can create and delete independently. Aggregation Aggregation is a specialize form of Association where all object have their own lifecycle but there is ownership and child object can not belongs to another parent object. Let’s take an example of Department and teacher. A single teacher can not belongs to multiple departments, but if we delete the department teacher object will not destroy. We can think about “has-a” relationship. Composition Composition is again specialize form of Aggregation and we can call this as a “death” relationship. It is a strong type of Aggregation. Child object dose not have their lifecycle and if parent object deletes all child object will also be deleted. Let’s take again an example of relationship between House and rooms. House can contain multiple rooms there is no independent life of room and any room can not belongs to two different house if we delete the house room will automatically delete. The question is: Now these all are real world examples. I am looking for some description about how to use these techniques in actual class code. I mean what is the point for using three different techniques for encapsulation, How these techniques could be implemented and How to choose which technique is applicable at time.

  This is a naming things question. I am processing trees (XML documents), and there are often special rules applied to nodes based on structure. It's been very difficult coming up with concise naming conventions for some cases, namely for nodes in the first position among their siblings, along with some recursive relationship: Given an arbitrary node, I want to describe its first child, and then that node's first child, and so on recursively. Given another arbitrary node, I want to describe its parent if the parent is first among its siblings, and that parent's parent if it's first, and so on recursively. Is there existing terminology to describe these tree positions? How would you name a variable or function that captures one of these cases so that it's intuitive to an unfamiliar developer trying to understand an algorithm?

• How can I give a basic idea of what I'm working on to a non programmer?

  As a relatively new programmer (1 year professionally, many years as an amateur) I've run into many situations that sent me running to Stack Overflow for answers that failed my meagre experiences. Tonight I received the hardest question ever. My wife asked me: What are you working on? The questions is deceptive in it's simplicity. A straight forward and truthful answer of "I'm working on a c# class module for monitoring database delivery times" is sure incite suggestion of attempts to confuse. My second instinct was to suggest that it couldn't really be explained to a layperson, after very brief consideration I came to the conclusion that this would likely result in a long and sleepless night on the sofa. The end result was a muddled answer along the lines of "something to monitor automatic things to make sure they're delivered on time". The reception was fairly chilly, I had to make many assurances that I was not insulting her ample intelligence. My question is thus, what is the best way to discuss your work as a programmer with your significant other who is not.

• Apache is reponding a blank white page

  I have the following situation: A site hosted in apache 2.4, with ssl, that works like a charm for a while now, but out of no where, without modifications to the site, apache started serving random blank pages. The workaround this is to delete the cookies of the browser or restart the browser. I've switched the vitualhost to log in debug mode but it didn't got me anywhere. • Dynamically add Server 2008 NLB Nodes

  Hi All, I have a small NLB cluster for Terminal Servers. One of the things we're looking at doing for this particular project (this is for a college class) is dynamically creating Terminal Servers. What we've done is create policies for a certain OU, that sets the proper TS Farm properties and installs the Terminal Server role and NLB feature. Now what we'd like to do is create a script to be run on our Domain Controller to add hosts to the preexisting NLB cluster. On our Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller, I was thinking of running the following PowerShell script I've kind of hacked together. Any thoughts on if this will work? Is there any way I can trigger this script to run on the DC once all the scripts to install roles are done on the various Terminal Servers? Thanks very much in advance!!
