  • Mailing list with dynamically generated addresses

    - by Joe Tomasone
    I am trying to implement a dynamic mailing list from a database that changes quite often. Conditions: Postfix is the MTA Email addresses are in a MySql Database Postfix only allows senders whose emails are in that database (via smtpd_sender_restrictions) Cron job extracts the current emails from the database nightly and puts them into an alias file, then runs postalias on it. This works well, but since the sender remains the same, many domains are rejecting the email since my server is not a DNS listed mail server for the sender's domain. So, I either have to find a way to re-write the outgoing address as "listserv@mydomain" or find some mailing list package that will use database-retrieved emails (either queried directly or in a flat file) as the subscriber list, with that list replaced daily. I've tried Sympa and am pretty much ready to give up on it - it's a nightmare to get working right - but that's the only open source listserver that I have seen that works with dynamic mail lists. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Joe

  • Getting a list of packages installed on CentOS (by command line and on the web)

    - by sameold
    When installing CentOS (6.2), it installs a whole bunch of packages, but the installation is often very fast, it's hard to note the names of the packages. I have a couple of questions: 1) I'm guessing I could wait for the entire installation to complete and then query for the list of installed packages on the system. How do I do that? 2) Is there a printed list somewhere on the web, so I don't have to install the OS first just to get the list?

  • Creating a list based on a column

    - by MikkoP
    I need to create a dropdown list in sheet A based on the values in sheet B in column A. I clicked on the A column in B sheet and named it as Models. Then I clicked on the cell in sheet A where I wanted the list to be and selected Data -> Data validation -> Data validation. In the Settings page I selected List in the Allow section, checked Ignore blank and In-cell dropdown. In the Source section I inserted =Models. This way I get all the right values plus a lot of blank values. How do I prevent the blank lines from appearing in the list?

  • Creating Dynamic Objects

    - by Ramesh Durai
    How to dynamically create objects? string[] columnNames = { "EmpName", "EmpID", "PhoneNo" }; List<string[]> columnValues = new List<string[]>(); for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { columnValues.Add(new[] { "Ramesh", "12345", "12345" }); } List<Dictionary<string, object>> testData = new List<Dictionary<string, object>>(); foreach (string[] columnValue in columnValues) { Dictionary<string, object> data = new Dictionary<string, object>(); for (int j = 0; j < columnNames.Count(); j++) { data.Add(columnNames[j], columnValues[j]); } testData.Add(data); } Imaginary Class(Class is not available in code): class Employee { string EmpName { get;set; } string EmpID { get;set; } string PhoneNo { get;set; } } Note: Property/column names are dynamic. Now I want to convert the List<Dictionary<string, object>> to a class of type List<object> (i.e) List<Employee>. Is it Possible? Suggestions please.

  • WCF: Serializing and Deserializing generic collections

    - by Fabiano
    I have a class Team that holds a generic list: [DataContract(Name = "TeamDTO", IsReference = true)] public class Team { [DataMember] private IList<Person> members = new List<Person>(); public Team() { Init(); } private void Init() { members = new List<Person>(); } [System.Runtime.Serialization.OnDeserializing] protected void OnDeserializing(StreamingContext ctx) { Log("OnDeserializing of Team called"); Init(); if (members != null) Log(members.ToString()); } [System.Runtime.Serialization.OnSerializing] private void OnSerializing(StreamingContext ctx) { Log("OnSerializing of Team called"); if (members != null) Log(members.ToString()); } [System.Runtime.Serialization.OnDeserialized] protected void OnDeserialized(StreamingContext ctx) { Log("OnDeserialized of Team called"); if (members != null) Log(members.ToString()); } [System.Runtime.Serialization.OnSerialized] private void OnSerialized(StreamingContext ctx) { Log("OnSerialized of Team called"); Log(members.ToString()); } When I use this class in a WCF service, I get following log output OnSerializing of Team called System.Collections.Generic.List 1[Person] OnSerialized of Team called System.Collections.Generic.List 1[Person] OnDeserializing of Team called System.Collections.Generic.List 1[ENetLogic.ENetPerson.Model.FirstPartyPerson] OnDeserialized of Team called ENetLogic.ENetPerson.Model.Person[] After the deserialization members is an Array and no longer a generic list although the field type is IList< (?!) When I try to send this object back over the WCF service I get the log output OnSerializing of Team called ENetLogic.ENetPerson.Model.FirstPartyPerson[] After this my unit test crashes with a System.ExecutionEngineException, which means the WCF service is not able to serialize the array. (maybe because it expected a IList<) So, my question is: Does anybody know why the type of my IList< is an array after deserializing and why I can't serialize my Team object any longer after that? Thanks

  • c# finding matching words in table column using Linq2Sql

    - by David Liddle
    I am trying to use Linq2Sql to return all rows that contain values from a list of strings. The linq2sql class object has a string property that contains words separated by spaces. public class MyObject { public string MyProperty { get; set; } } Example MyProperty values are: MyObject1.MyProperty = "text1 text2 text3 text4" MyObject2.MyProperty = "text2" For example, using a string collection, I pass the below list var list = new List<>() { "text2", "text4" } This would return both items in my example above as they both contain "text2" value. I attempted the following using the below code however, because of my extension method the Linq2Sql cannot be evaluated. public static IQueryable<MyObject> WithProperty(this IQueryable<MyProperty> qry, IList<string> p) { return from t in qry where t.MyProperty.Contains(p, ' ') select t; } I also wrote an extension method public static bool Contains(this string str, IList<string> list, char seperator) { if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(str) || list == null) return false; var splitStr = str.Split(new char[] { seperator }, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries); foreach (string s in splitStr) foreach (string l in list) if (String.Compare(s, l, true) == 0) return true; return false; } Any help or ideas on how I could achieve this?

  • How would I compare two Lists(Of <CustomClass>) in VB?

    - by Kumba
    I'm working on implementing the equality operator = for a custom class of mine. The class has one property, Value, which is itself a List(Of OtherClass), where OtherClass is yet another custom class in my project. I've already implemented the IComparer, IComparable, IEqualityComparer, and IEquatable interfaces, the operators =, <>, bool and not, and overriden Equals and GetHashCode for OtherClass. This should give me all the tools I need to compare these objects, and various tests comparing two singular instances of these objects so far checks out. However, I'm not sure how to approach this when they are in a List. I don't care about the list order. Given: Dim x As New List(Of OtherClass) From {New OtherClass("foo"), New OtherClass("bar"), New OtherClass("baz")} Dim y As New List(Of OtherClass) From {New OtherClass("baz"), New OtherClass("foo"), New OtherClass("bar")} Then (x = y).ToString should print out True. I need to compare the same (not distinct) set of objects in this list. The list shouldn't support dupes of OtherClass, but I'll have to figure out how to add that in later as an exception. Not interested in using LINQ. It looks nice, but in the few examples I've played with, adds a performance overhead in that bugs me. Loops are ugly, but they are fast :) A straight code answer is fine, but I'd like to understand the logic needed for such a comparison as well. I'm probably going to have to implement said logic more than a few times down the road.

  • reverse many to many fields in Django + count them

    - by cleliodpaula
    I'm trying to figure out how to solve this class Item(models.Model): type = models.ForeignKey(Type) name = models.CharField(max_lenght = 10) ... class List(models.Model): items = models.ManyToManyField(Item) ... I want to count how many an Item appears in another Lists, and show on template. view def items_by_list(request, id_): list = List.objects.get(id = id_) qr = list.items.all() #NOT TESTED num = [] i = 0 for item in qr: num[i] = List.objects.filter(items__id = item__id ).count() #FINISH NOT TESTED c = {} c.update(csrf(request)) c = {'request':request, 'list' : qr, 'num' : num} return render_to_response('items_by_list.html', c, context_instance=RequestContext(request)) template {% for dia in list %} <div class="span4" > <div> <h6 style="color: #9937d8">{{item.type.description}}</h6> <small style="color: #b2e300">{{ item.name }}</small> <small style="color: #b2e300">{{COUNT HOW MANY TIMES THE ITEM APPEAR ON OTHER LISTS}}</small> </div> {% endfor %} This seems to be easy, but I could not implement yet. If anyone has some glue to me, please help me. Thanks in advance.

  • Friday tips #2

    - by Chris Kawalek
    Welcome to our second Friday tips blog! You can ask us questions using the hash tag #AskOracleVirtualization on Twitter and we'll do our best to answer them. Today we've got a VDI related question on linked clones: Question: I want to use linked clones with Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. What are my options? Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: First, linked clones are available with the Oracle VirtualBox hypervisor only. Second, your choice of storage will affect the rest of your architecture. If you are using a SAN presenting ISCSI LUNS, you can have linked clones with a Oracle Enterprise Linux based hypervisor running VirtualBox. OEL will use OCFS2 to allow VirtualBox to create the linked clones. Because of the OCFS2 requirement, a Solaris based VirtualBox hypervisor will not be able to support linked clones on remote ISCSI storage. If you using the local storage option on your hypervisors, you will have linked clones with Solaris or Linux based hypervisors running VirtualBox. In all cases, Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure makes the right selection for creating clones - sparse or linked - behind the scenes. Plan your architecture accordingly if you want to ensure you have the higher performing linked clones.

  • Looking for a better way to integrate a static list into a set of classes

    - by EvilTeach
    I'm trying to expand my sons interest from Warcraft 3 programming into C++ to broaden his horizons to a degree. We are planning on porting a little game that he wrote. The context goes something like this. There are Ships and Missiles, for which Ships will use Missiles and interact with them A Container exists which will hold 'a list' of ships. A Container exists which will hold 'a list' of planets. One can apply a function over all elements in the Container (for_each) Ships and Missles can be created/destroyed at any time New objects automatically insert themselves into the proper container. I cobbled a small example together to do that job, so we can talk about topics (list, templates etc) but I am not pleased with the results. #include <iostream> #include <list> using namespace std; /* Base class to hold static list in common with various object groups */ template<class T> class ObjectManager { public : ObjectManager ( void ) { cout << "Construct ObjectManager at " << this << endl; objectList.push_back(this); } virtual ~ObjectManager ( void ) { cout << "Destroy ObjectManager at " << this << endl; } void for_each ( void (*function)(T *) ) { for (objectListIter = objectList.begin(); objectListIter != objectList.end(); ++objectListIter) { (*function)((T *) *objectListIter); } } list<ObjectManager<T> *>::iterator objectListIter; static list<ObjectManager<T> *> objectList; }; /* initializer for static list */ template<class T> list<ObjectManager<T> *> ObjectManager<T>::objectList; /* A simple ship for testing */ class Ship : public ObjectManager<Ship> { public : Ship ( void ) : ObjectManager<Ship>() { cout << "Construct Ship at " << this << endl; } ~Ship ( void ) { cout << "Destroy Ship at " << this << endl; } friend ostream &operator<< ( ostream &out, const Ship &that ) { out << "I am a ship"; return out; } }; /* A simple missile for testing */ class Missile : public ObjectManager<Missile> { public : Missile ( void ) : ObjectManager<Missile>() { cout << "Construct Missile at " << this << endl; } ~Missile ( void ) { cout << "Destroy Missile at " << this << endl; } friend ostream &operator<< ( ostream &out, const Missile &that ) { out << "I am a missile"; return out; } }; /* A function suitable for the for_each function */ template <class T> void show ( T *it ) { cout << "Show: " << *it << " at " << it << endl; } int main ( void ) { /* Create dummy planets for testing */ Missile p1; Missile p2; /* Demonstrate Iterator */ p1.for_each(show); /* Create dummy ships for testing */ Ship s1; Ship s2; Ship s3; /* Demonstrate Iterator */ s1.for_each(show); return 0; } Specifically, The list is effectively embedded in each ship though the inheritance mechanism. One must have a ship, in order to access the list of ships. One must have a missile in order to be able to access the list of missiles. That feels awkward. My question boils down to "Is there a better way to do this?" Automatic object container creation Automatic object insertion Container access without requiring an object in the list to access it. I am looking for better ideas. All helpful entries get an upvote. Thanks Evil.

  • iTextSharp error - cannot convert type 'Collections.Generic.List' to 'iTextSharp.text.Element'

    - by mike
    I am trying to export pdf file using aspx and c#. I got the following error. Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Collections.Generic.List'' to 'iTextSharp.text.Element' I have the following code using iTextSharp.text; using iTextSharp.text.pdf; using iTextSharp.text.html.simpleparser; StringBuilder strB = new StringBuilder(); document.Open(); if (text.Length.Equals(0))//export the text { GridView1.DataBind(); using (StringWriter sWriter = new StringWriter(strB)) { using (HtmlTextWriter htWriter = new HtmlTextWriter(sWriter)) { GridView1.RenderControl(htWriter); } } } else //export the grid { strB.Append(text); } using (TextReader sReader = new StringReader(strB.ToString())) { StyleSheet styles = new StyleSheet(); List<Element> list = new List<Element>(); list = HTMLWorker.ParseToList(sReader, styles); foreach (IElement elm in list) { document.Add(elm); } } I got the error in this line: list = HTMLWorker.ParseToList(sReader, styles); It's the first time that I am trying to export pdf files. I tried to cast the list element , however this did not solve my error. Any advice would be helpful!!!

  • C# Linq List Contains Similar Elements

    - by John Peters
    Hi All, I am looking for linq query to see if there exists a similar object I have an object graph as follows Cart myCart = new Cart { List<CartProduct> myCartProduct = new List<CartProduct> { CartProduct cartProduct1 = new CartProduct { List<CartProductAttribute> a = new List<CartProductAttribute> { CartProductAttribute cpa1 = new CartProductAttribute{ title="red" }, CartProductAttribute cpa2 = new CartProductAttribute{ title="small" } } } CartProduct cartProduct2 = new CartProduct { List<CartProductAttribute> d = new List<CartProductAttribute> { CartProductAttribute cpa3 = new CartProductAttribute{ title="john" }, CartProductAttribute cpa4 = new CartProductAttribute{ title="mary" } } } } } I would like to get from the Cart = a CartProduct that has the exact same CartProductAttribute title values as a CartProduct that I need to compare. No more and no less. E.G. I need to find a similar CartProduct that has a CartProductAttribute with title="red" and a cartProductAttribute with title="small" in myCart (eg 'cartProduct1' in the example) CartProduct cartProductToCompare = new CartProduct { List<CartProductAttribute> cartProductToCompareAttributes = new List<CartProductAttribute> { CartProductAttribute cpa5 = new CartProductAttribute{ title="red" }, CartProductAttribute cpa6 = new CartProductAttribute{ title="small" } } } So from object graph myCart cartProduct1 cpa1 (title=red) cpa2 (title=small) cartProduct2 cpa3 (title=john) cpa4 (title=mary) Linq query looking for cartProductToCompare cpa5 (title=red) cpa6 (title=small) Should find cartProduct1 Hope all this makes sense... Thanks

  • Java, LinkedList of Strings. Insert in alphabetical order

    - by user69514
    I have a simple linked list. The node contains a string (value) and an int (count). In the linkedlist when I insert I need to insert the new Node in alphabetical order. If there is a node with the same value in the list, then I simply increment the count of the node. I think I got my method really screwed up. public void addToList(Node node){ //check if list is empty, if so insert at head if(count == 0 ){ head = node; head.setNext(null); count++; } else{ Node temp = head; for(int i=0; i<count; i++){ //if value is greater, insert after if(node.getItem().getValue().compareTo(temp.getItem().getValue()) > 0){ node.setNext(temp.getNext()); temp.setNext(node); } //if value is equal just increment the counter else if(node.getItem().getValue().compareTo(temp.getItem().getValue()) == 0){ temp.getItem().setCount(temp.getItem().getCount() + 1); } //else insert before else{ node.setNext(temp); } } } }

  • Get "term is undefined” error when trying to assign arrayList to List component dataSource

    - by user1814467
    I'm creating an online game where people log in and then have the list of current players displayed. When the user enters a "room" it dispatches an SFSEvent which includes a Room object with the list of users as User objects in that room. As that event's callback function, I get the list of current users which is an Array, switch the View Stack child index, and then I wrap the user list array in an ArrayList before I assign it to the MXML Spark List component's dataSource. Here's my code: My Actionscript Code Section (PreGame.as): private function onRoomJoin(event:SFSEvent):void { const room:Room = this._sfs.getRoomByName(PREGAME_ROOM); this.selectedChild = waitingRoom; /** I know I should be using event listeners * but this is a temporary fix, otherwise * I keep getting null object errors * do to the li_users list not being * created in time for the dataProvider assignment **/ setTimeout(function ():void { const userList:ArrayList = new ArrayList(room.userList); this.li_users.dataProvider = userList; // This is where the error gets thrown },1000); } My MXML Code: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <mx:ViewStack xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" initialize="preGame_initializeHandler(event)" > <fx:Script source="PreGame.as"/> <s:NavigatorContent id="nc_loginScreen"> /** Login Screen Code **/ </s:NavigatorContent> /** Start of Waiting Room code **/ <s:NavigatorContent id="waitingRoom"> <s:Panel id="pn_users" width="400" height="400" title="Users"> /** This is the List in question **/ <s:List id="li_users" width="100%" height="100%"/> </s:Panel> </s:NavigatorContent> </mx:ViewStack> However, I keep getting this error: TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The arrayList has data, so I know it's not empty/null.

  • Javascript BBCode Parser recognizes only first list element

    - by nolandark
    I have a really simple Javascript BBCode Parser for client-side live preview (don't want to use Ajax for that). The problem ist, this parser only recognizes the first list element: function bbcode_parser(str) { search = new Array( /\[b\](.*?)\[\/b\]/, /\[i\](.*?)\[\/i\]/, /\[img\](.*?)\[\/img\]/, /\[url\="?(.*?)"?\](.*?)\[\/url\]/, /\[quote](.*?)\[\/quote\]/, /\[list\=(.*?)\](.*?)\[\/list\]/i, /\[list\]([\s\S]*?)\[\/list\]/i, /\[\*\]\s?(.*?)\n/); replace = new Array( "<strong>$1</strong>", "<em>$1</em>", "<img src=\"$1\" alt=\"An image\">", "<a href=\"$1\">$2</a>", "<blockquote>$1</blockquote>", "<ol>$2</ol>", "<ul>$1</ul>", "<li>$1</li>"); for (i = 0; i < search.length; i++) { str = str.replace(search[i], replace[i]); } return str;} [list] [*] adfasdfdf [*] asdfadsf [*] asdfadss [/list] only the first element is converted to a HTML List element, the rest stays as BBCode: adfasdfdf [*] asdfadsf [*] asdfadss I tried playing around with "\s", "\S" and "\n" but I'm mostly used to PHP Regex and totally new to Javascript Regex. Any suggestions?

  • Comparing dicts and update a list of result

    - by lmnt
    Hello, I have a list of dicts and I want to compare each dict in that list with a dict in a resulting list, add it to the result list if it's not there, and if it's there, update a counter associated with that dict. At first I wanted to use the solution described at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1692388/python-list-of-dict-if-exists-increment-a-dict-value-if-not-append-a-new-dict but I got an error where one dict can not be used as a key to another dict. So the data structure I opted for is a list where each entry is a dict and an int: r = [[{'src': '', 'dst': '', 'cmd': ''}, 0]] The original dataset (that should be compared to the resulting dataset) is a list of dicts: d1 = {'src': '192.168.0.1', 'dst': '192.168.0.2', 'cmd': 'cmd1'} d2 = {'src': '192.168.0.1', 'dst': '192.168.0.2', 'cmd': 'cmd2'} d3 = {'src': '192.168.0.2', 'dst': '192.168.0.1', 'cmd': 'cmd1'} d4 = {'src': '192.168.0.1', 'dst': '192.168.0.2', 'cmd': 'cmd1'} o = [d1, d2, d3, d4] The result should be: r = [[{'src': '192.168.0.1', 'dst': '192.168.0.2', 'cmd': 'cmd1'}, 2], [{'src': '192.168.0.1', 'dst': '192.168.0.2', 'cmd': 'cmd2'}, 1], [{'src': '192.168.0.2', 'dst': '192.168.0.1', 'cmd': 'cmd1'}, 1]] What is the best way to accomplish this? I have a few code examples but none is really good and most is not working correctly. Thanks for any input on this! UPDATE The final code after Tamås comments is: from collections import namedtuple, defaultdict DataClass = namedtuple("DataClass", "src dst cmd") d1 = DataClass(src='192.168.0.1', dst='192.168.0.2', cmd='cmd1') d2 = DataClass(src='192.168.0.1', dst='192.168.0.2', cmd='cmd2') d3 = DataClass(src='192.168.0.2', dst='192.168.0.1', cmd='cmd1') d4 = DataClass(src='192.168.0.1', dst='192.168.0.2', cmd='cmd1') ds = d1, d2, d3, d4 r = defaultdict(int) for d in ds: r[d] += 1 print "list to compare" for d in ds: print d print "result after merge" for k, v in r.iteritems(): print("%s: %s" % (k, v))

  • WCF - Contract Name could not be found in the list of contracts

    - by user208662
    Hello, I am relatively new to WCF. However, I need to create a service that exposes data to both Silverlight and AJAX client applications. In an attempt to accomplish this, I have created the following service to serve as a proof of concept: [ServiceContract(Namespace="urn:MyCompany.MyProject.Services")] public interface IJsonService { [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(Method = "GET", RequestFormat=WebMessageFormat.Json, ResponseFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json)] List<String> JsonFindNames(); } [ServiceContract(Namespace="urn:MyCompany.MyProject.Services")] public interface IWsService { [OperationContract(Name="FindNames")] List<String> WsFindNames(); } [ServiceBehavior(Name="myService", Namespace="urn:MyCompany.MyProject.Services")] public class myService : IJsonService, IWsService { public List<String> JsonFindNames() { return FindNames(); } public List<String> WsFindNames() { return FindNames(name); } public List<string> FindNames() { List<string> names = List<string>(); names.Add("Alan"); names.Add("Bill"); return results; } } When I try to access this service, I receive the following error: The contract name 'myService' could not be found in the list of contracts implemented by the service 'myService'. What is the cause of this? How do I fix this? Thank you

  • MVC2 Modelbinder for List of derived objects

    - by user250773
    I want a list of different (derived) object types working with the Default Modelbinder in Asp.net MVC 2. I have the following ViewModel: public class ItemFormModel { [Required(ErrorMessage = "Required Field")] public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } [ScaffoldColumn(true)] //public List<Core.Object> Objects { get; set; } public ArrayList Objects { get; set; } } And the list contains objects of diffent derived types, e.g. public class TextObject : Core.Object { public string Text { get; set; } } public class BoolObject : Core.Object { public bool Value { get; set; } } It doesn't matter if I use the List or the ArrayList implementation, everything get's nicely scaffolded in the form, but the modelbinder doesn't resolve the derived object type properties for me when posting back to the ActionResult. What could be a good solution for the Viewmodel structure to get a list of different object types handled? Having an extra list for every object type (e.g. List, List etc.) seems to be not a good solution for me, since this is a lot of overhead both in building the viewmodel and mapping it back to the domain model. Thinking about the other approach of binding all properties in a custom model binder, how can I make use the data annotations approach here (validating required attributes etc.) without a lot of overhead?

  • Item in multiple lists

    - by Evan Teran
    So I have some legacy code which I would love to use more modern techniques. But I fear that given the way that things are designed, it is a non-option. The core issue is that often a node is in more than one list at a time. Something like this: struct T { T *next_1; T *prev_1; T *next_2; T *prev_2; int value; }; this allows the core have a single object of type T be allocated and inserted into 2 doubly linked lists, nice and efficient. Obviously I could just have 2 std::list<T*>'s and just insert the object into both...but there is one thing which would be way less efficient...removal. Often the code needs to "destroy" an object of type T and this includes removing the element from all lists. This is nice because given a T* the code can remove that object from all lists it exists in. With something like a std::list I would need to search for the object to get an iterator, then remove that (I can't just pass around an iterator because it is in several lists). Is there a nice c++-ish solution to this, or is the manually rolled way the best way? I have a feeling the manually rolled way is the answer, but I figured I'd ask.

  • Using innerHTML to add ordered list fails in IE

    - by Matt
    I'm using the following Javascript code to populate a DIV with an ordered list: // send script back in split list var scriptList = script.split("\n"); var finalScript = "<ol>\n"; var count = 0; while(scriptList.length >= count) { if((scriptList[count]=="") || (scriptList[count] == undefined)) { count ++; continue; } finalScript = finalScript + "<li>" + scriptList[count] + "</li>\n"; count ++; } finalScript = finalScript + "</ol>"; scriptingDiv.innerHTML = finalScript; In firefox, if i look in the DOM using Firebug, this correctly translates to the following and correctly displays an ordered list. <ol> <li>This is the first item in the list</li> <li>This is the second item in the list</li> </ol> In IE, it displays as if the </li> tags are <br /> tags and ignores all the other tags, like this: This is the first item in the list This is the second item in the list Do I need to dynamically add the ordered list to the DOM for this to work? As opposed to just setting the html code in the div using .innerHTML? TIA

  • A Taxonomy of Numerical Methods v1

    - by JoshReuben
    Numerical Analysis – When, What, (but not how) Once you understand the Math & know C++, Numerical Methods are basically blocks of iterative & conditional math code. I found the real trick was seeing the forest for the trees – knowing which method to use for which situation. Its pretty easy to get lost in the details – so I’ve tried to organize these methods in a way that I can quickly look this up. I’ve included links to detailed explanations and to C++ code examples. I’ve tried to classify Numerical methods in the following broad categories: Solving Systems of Linear Equations Solving Non-Linear Equations Iteratively Interpolation Curve Fitting Optimization Numerical Differentiation & Integration Solving ODEs Boundary Problems Solving EigenValue problems Enjoy – I did ! Solving Systems of Linear Equations Overview Solve sets of algebraic equations with x unknowns The set is commonly in matrix form Gauss-Jordan Elimination http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauss%E2%80%93Jordan_elimination C++: http://www.codekeep.net/snippets/623f1923-e03c-4636-8c92-c9dc7aa0d3c0.aspx Produces solution of the equations & the coefficient matrix Efficient, stable 2 steps: · Forward Elimination – matrix decomposition: reduce set to triangular form (0s below the diagonal) or row echelon form. If degenerate, then there is no solution · Backward Elimination –write the original matrix as the product of ints inverse matrix & its reduced row-echelon matrix à reduce set to row canonical form & use back-substitution to find the solution to the set Elementary ops for matrix decomposition: · Row multiplication · Row switching · Add multiples of rows to other rows Use pivoting to ensure rows are ordered for achieving triangular form LU Decomposition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LU_decomposition C++: http://ganeshtiwaridotcomdotnp.blogspot.co.il/2009/12/c-c-code-lu-decomposition-for-solving.html Represent the matrix as a product of lower & upper triangular matrices A modified version of GJ Elimination Advantage – can easily apply forward & backward elimination to solve triangular matrices Techniques: · Doolittle Method – sets the L matrix diagonal to unity · Crout Method - sets the U matrix diagonal to unity Note: both the L & U matrices share the same unity diagonal & can be stored compactly in the same matrix Gauss-Seidel Iteration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauss%E2%80%93Seidel_method C++: http://www.nr.com/forum/showthread.php?t=722 Transform the linear set of equations into a single equation & then use numerical integration (as integration formulas have Sums, it is implemented iteratively). an optimization of Gauss-Jacobi: 1.5 times faster, requires 0.25 iterations to achieve the same tolerance Solving Non-Linear Equations Iteratively find roots of polynomials – there may be 0, 1 or n solutions for an n order polynomial use iterative techniques Iterative methods · used when there are no known analytical techniques · Requires set functions to be continuous & differentiable · Requires an initial seed value – choice is critical to convergence à conduct multiple runs with different starting points & then select best result · Systematic - iterate until diminishing returns, tolerance or max iteration conditions are met · bracketing techniques will always yield convergent solutions, non-bracketing methods may fail to converge Incremental method if a nonlinear function has opposite signs at 2 ends of a small interval x1 & x2, then there is likely to be a solution in their interval – solutions are detected by evaluating a function over interval steps, for a change in sign, adjusting the step size dynamically. Limitations – can miss closely spaced solutions in large intervals, cannot detect degenerate (coinciding) solutions, limited to functions that cross the x-axis, gives false positives for singularities Fixed point method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed-point_iteration C++: http://books.google.co.il/books?id=weYj75E_t6MC&pg=PA79&lpg=PA79&dq=fixed+point+method++c%2B%2B&source=bl&ots=LQ-5P_taoC&sig=lENUUIYBK53tZtTwNfHLy5PEWDk&hl=en&sa=X&ei=wezDUPW1J5DptQaMsIHQCw&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=fixed%20point%20method%20%20c%2B%2B&f=false Algebraically rearrange a solution to isolate a variable then apply incremental method Bisection method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisection_method C++: http://numericalcomputing.wordpress.com/category/algorithms/ Bracketed - Select an initial interval, keep bisecting it ad midpoint into sub-intervals and then apply incremental method on smaller & smaller intervals – zoom in Adv: unaffected by function gradient à reliable Disadv: slow convergence False Position Method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_position_method C++: http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/topic/126100-bisection-and-false-position-methods/ Bracketed - Select an initial interval , & use the relative value of function at interval end points to select next sub-intervals (estimate how far between the end points the solution might be & subdivide based on this) Newton-Raphson method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton's_method C++: http://www-users.cselabs.umn.edu/classes/Summer-2012/csci1113/index.php?page=./newt3 Also known as Newton's method Convenient, efficient Not bracketed – only a single initial guess is required to start iteration – requires an analytical expression for the first derivative of the function as input. Evaluates the function & its derivative at each step. Can be extended to the Newton MutiRoot method for solving multiple roots Can be easily applied to an of n-coupled set of non-linear equations – conduct a Taylor Series expansion of a function, dropping terms of order n, rewrite as a Jacobian matrix of PDs & convert to simultaneous linear equations !!! Secant Method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secant_method C++: http://forum.vcoderz.com/showthread.php?p=205230 Unlike N-R, can estimate first derivative from an initial interval (does not require root to be bracketed) instead of inputting it Since derivative is approximated, may converge slower. Is fast in practice as it does not have to evaluate the derivative at each step. For a given set of 3 data points , fit a quadratic interpolant through the data Bracketed functions allow Newton divided differences to be calculated recursively Difference table Cubic Spline Interpolation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spline_interpolation C++: https://www.marcusbannerman.co.uk/index.php/home/latestarticles/42-articles/96-cubic-spline-class.html Spline is a piecewise polynomial Provides smoothness – for interpolations with significantly varying data Use weighted coefficients to bend the function to be smooth & its 1st & 2nd derivatives are continuous through the edge points in the interval Curve Fitting A generalization of interpolating whereby given data points may contain noise à the curve does not necessarily pass through all the points Least Squares Fit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Least_squares C++: http://www.ccas.ru/mmes/educat/lab04k/02/least-squares.c Residual – difference between observed value & expected value Model function is often chosen as a linear combination of the specified functions Determines: A) The model instance in which the sum of squared residuals has the least value B) param values for which model best fits data Straight Line Fit Linear correlation between independent variable and dependent variable Linear Regression http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_regression C++: http://www.oocities.org/david_swaim/cpp/linregc.htm Special case of statistically exact extrapolation Leverage least squares Given a basis function, the sum of the residuals is determined and the corresponding gradient equation is expressed as a set of normal linear equations in matrix form that can be solved (e.g. using LU Decomposition) Can be weighted - Drop the assumption that all errors have the same significance –-> confidence of accuracy is different for each data point. Fit the function closer to points with higher weights Polynomial Fit - use a polynomial basis function Moving Average http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moving_average C++: http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/17860/A-Simple-Moving-Average-Algorithm Used for smoothing (cancel fluctuations to highlight longer-term trends & cycles), time series data analysis, signal processing filters Replace each data point with average of neighbors. Can be simple (SMA), weighted (WMA), exponential (EMA). Lags behind latest data points – extra weight can be given to more recent data points. Weights can decrease arithmetically or exponentially according to distance from point. Parameters: smoothing factor, period, weight basis Optimization Overview Given function with multiple variables, find Min (or max by minimizing –f(x)) Iterative approach Efficient, but not necessarily reliable Conditions: noisy data, constraints, non-linear models Detection via sign of first derivative - Derivative of saddle points will be 0 Local minima Bisection method Similar method for finding a root for a non-linear equation Start with an interval that contains a minimum Golden Search method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_section_search C++: http://www.codecogs.com/code/maths/optimization/golden.php Bisect intervals according to golden ratio 0.618.. Achieves reduction by evaluating a single function instead of 2 Newton-Raphson Method Brent method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent's_method C++: http://people.sc.fsu.edu/~jburkardt/cpp_src/brent/brent.cpp Based on quadratic or parabolic interpolation – if the function is smooth & parabolic near to the minimum, then a parabola fitted through any 3 points should approximate the minima – fails when the 3 points are collinear , in which case the denominator is 0 Simplex Method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplex_algorithm C++: http://www.codeguru.com/cpp/article.php/c17505/Simplex-Optimization-Algorithm-and-Implemetation-in-C-Programming.htm Find the global minima of any multi-variable function Direct search – no derivatives required At each step it maintains a non-degenerative simplex – a convex hull of n+1 vertices. Obtains the minimum for a function with n variables by evaluating the function at n-1 points, iteratively replacing the point of worst result with the point of best result, shrinking the multidimensional simplex around the best point. Point replacement involves expanding & contracting the simplex near the worst value point to determine a better replacement point Oscillation can be avoided by choosing the 2nd worst result Restart if it gets stuck Parameters: contraction & expansion factors Simulated Annealing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simulated_annealing C++: http://code.google.com/p/cppsimulatedannealing/ Analogy to heating & cooling metal to strengthen its structure Stochastic method – apply random permutation search for global minima - Avoid entrapment in local minima via hill climbing Heating schedule - Annealing schedule params: temperature, iterations at each temp, temperature delta Cooling schedule – can be linear, step-wise or exponential Differential Evolution http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_evolution C++: http://www.amichel.com/de/doc/html/ More advanced stochastic methods analogous to biological processes: Genetic algorithms, evolution strategies Parallel direct search method against multiple discrete or continuous variables Initial population of variable vectors chosen randomly – if weighted difference vector of 2 vectors yields a lower objective function value then it replaces the comparison vector Many params: #parents, #variables, step size, crossover constant etc Convergence is slow – many more function evaluations than simulated annealing Numerical Differentiation Overview 2 approaches to finite difference methods: · A) approximate function via polynomial interpolation then differentiate · B) Taylor series approximation – additionally provides error estimate Finite Difference methods http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite_difference_method C++: http://www.wpi.edu/Pubs/ETD/Available/etd-051807-164436/unrestricted/EAMPADU.pdf Find differences between high order derivative values - Approximate differential equations by finite differences at evenly spaced data points Based on forward & backward Taylor series expansion of f(x) about x plus or minus multiples of delta h. Forward / backward difference - the sums of the series contains even derivatives and the difference of the series contains odd derivatives – coupled equations that can be solved. Provide an approximation of the derivative within a O(h^2) accuracy There is also central difference & extended central difference which has a O(h^4) accuracy Richardson Extrapolation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richardson_extrapolation C++: http://mathscoding.blogspot.co.il/2012/02/introduction-richardson-extrapolation.html A sequence acceleration method applied to finite differences Fast convergence, high accuracy O(h^4) Derivatives via Interpolation Cannot apply Finite Difference method to discrete data points at uneven intervals – so need to approximate the derivative of f(x) using the derivative of the interpolant via 3 point Lagrange Interpolation Note: the higher the order of the derivative, the lower the approximation precision Numerical Integration Estimate finite & infinite integrals of functions More accurate procedure than numerical differentiation Use when it is not possible to obtain an integral of a function analytically or when the function is not given, only the data points are Newton Cotes Methods http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%E2%80%93Cotes_formulas C++: http://www.siafoo.net/snippet/324 For equally spaced data points Computationally easy – based on local interpolation of n rectangular strip areas that is piecewise fitted to a polynomial to get the sum total area Evaluate the integrand at n+1 evenly spaced points – approximate definite integral by Sum Weights are derived from Lagrange Basis polynomials Leverage Trapezoidal Rule for default 2nd formulas, Simpson 1/3 Rule for substituting 3 point formulas, Simpson 3/8 Rule for 4 point formulas. For 4 point formulas use Bodes Rule. Higher orders obtain more accurate results Trapezoidal Rule uses simple area, Simpsons Rule replaces the integrand f(x) with a quadratic polynomial p(x) that uses the same values as f(x) for its end points, but adds a midpoint Romberg Integration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romberg's_method C++: http://code.google.com/p/romberg-integration/downloads/detail?name=romberg.cpp&can=2&q= Combines trapezoidal rule with Richardson Extrapolation Evaluates the integrand at equally spaced points The integrand must have continuous derivatives Each R(n,m) extrapolation uses a higher order integrand polynomial replacement rule (zeroth starts with trapezoidal) à a lower triangular matrix set of equation coefficients where the bottom right term has the most accurate approximation. The process continues until the difference between 2 successive diagonal terms becomes sufficiently small. Gaussian Quadrature http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaussian_quadrature C++: http://www.alglib.net/integration/gaussianquadratures.php Data points are chosen to yield best possible accuracy – requires fewer evaluations Ability to handle singularities, functions that are difficult to evaluate The integrand can include a weighting function determined by a set of orthogonal polynomials. Points & weights are selected so that the integrand yields the exact integral if f(x) is a polynomial of degree <= 2n+1 Techniques (basically different weighting functions): · Gauss-Legendre Integration w(x)=1 · Gauss-Laguerre Integration w(x)=e^-x · Gauss-Hermite Integration w(x)=e^-x^2 · Gauss-Chebyshev Integration w(x)= 1 / Sqrt(1-x^2) Solving ODEs Use when high order differential equations cannot be solved analytically Evaluated under boundary conditions RK for systems – a high order differential equation can always be transformed into a coupled first order system of equations Euler method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler_method C++: http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Euler_method First order Runge–Kutta method. Simple recursive method – given an initial value, calculate derivative deltas. Unstable & not very accurate (O(h) error) – not used in practice A first-order method - the local error (truncation error per step) is proportional to the square of the step size, and the global error (error at a given time) is proportional to the step size In evolving solution between data points xn & xn+1, only evaluates derivatives at beginning of interval xn à asymmetric at boundaries Higher order Runge Kutta http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runge%E2%80%93Kutta_methods C++: http://www.dreamincode.net/code/snippet1441.htm 2nd & 4th order RK - Introduces parameterized midpoints for more symmetric solutions à accuracy at higher computational cost Adaptive RK – RK-Fehlberg – estimate the truncation at each integration step & automatically adjust the step size to keep error within prescribed limits. At each step 2 approximations are compared – if in disagreement to a specific accuracy, the step size is reduced Boundary Value Problems Where solution of differential equations are located at 2 different values of the independent variable x à more difficult, because cannot just start at point of initial value – there may not be enough starting conditions available at the end points to produce a unique solution An n-order equation will require n boundary conditions – need to determine the missing n-1 conditions which cause the given conditions at the other boundary to be satisfied Shooting Method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_method C++: http://ganeshtiwaridotcomdotnp.blogspot.co.il/2009/12/c-c-code-shooting-method-for-solving.html Iteratively guess the missing values for one end & integrate, then inspect the discrepancy with the boundary values of the other end to adjust the estimate Given the starting boundary values u1 & u2 which contain the root u, solve u given the false position method (solving the differential equation as an initial value problem via 4th order RK), then use u to solve the differential equations. Finite Difference Method For linear & non-linear systems Higher order derivatives require more computational steps – some combinations for boundary conditions may not work though Improve the accuracy by increasing the number of mesh points Solving EigenValue Problems An eigenvalue can substitute a matrix when doing matrix multiplication à convert matrix multiplication into a polynomial EigenValue For a given set of equations in matrix form, determine what are the solution eigenvalue & eigenvectors Similar Matrices - have same eigenvalues. Use orthogonal similarity transforms to reduce a matrix to diagonal form from which eigenvalue(s) & eigenvectors can be computed iteratively Jacobi method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobi_method C++: http://people.sc.fsu.edu/~jburkardt/classes/acs2_2008/openmp/jacobi/jacobi.html Robust but Computationally intense – use for small matrices < 10x10 Power Iteration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_iteration For any given real symmetric matrix, generate the largest single eigenvalue & its eigenvectors Simplest method – does not compute matrix decomposition à suitable for large, sparse matrices Inverse Iteration Variation of power iteration method – generates the smallest eigenvalue from the inverse matrix Rayleigh Method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayleigh's_method_of_dimensional_analysis Variation of power iteration method Rayleigh Quotient Method Variation of inverse iteration method Matrix Tri-diagonalization Method Use householder algorithm to reduce an NxN symmetric matrix to a tridiagonal real symmetric matrix vua N-2 orthogonal transforms     Whats Next Outside of Numerical Methods there are lots of different types of algorithms that I’ve learned over the decades: Data Mining – (I covered this briefly in a previous post: http://geekswithblogs.net/JoshReuben/archive/2007/12/31/ssas-dm-algorithms.aspx ) Search & Sort Routing Problem Solving Logical Theorem Proving Planning Probabilistic Reasoning Machine Learning Solvers (eg MIP) Bioinformatics (Sequence Alignment, Protein Folding) Quant Finance (I read Wilmott’s books – interesting) Sooner or later, I’ll cover the above topics as well.

    Hello, Please help me with writing function which takes two arguments : list of ints and index (int) and returns list of integers with negative of value on specified index position in the table MyReverse :: [Int]-Int-[Int] for example myReverse [1,2,3,4,5] 3 = [1,2,-3,4,5] if index is bigger then length of the list or smaller then 0 return the same list. Thanks for help
