• How to hide canvas content from parent rounded corners in any webkit for Mac?

  I have a parent div with rounded corners that contains a canvas: <div id="box"> <canvas width="300px" height="300px"></canvas> </div>? #box { width: 150px; height: 150px; background-color: blue; border-radius: 50px; overflow: hidden; }? The canvas renders a red rectangle that overflows the parent. As expected, this is what I get in all browsers: The problem: However, for webkit browsers running in Mac OS lion (I tested Safari 5.1.5 and Chrome 19), the canvas is still visible in the round corners: Interestingly, this problem seems to happen only when the inner element is a canvas. For any other child element, the content is correctly hidden. One workaround would be to apply the same rounded corners to the canvas itself, but unfortunately this is not possible, since I need to animate the canvas relative position. Another workaround that should work, is to redraw the canvas in a clipped region that resembles the rounded corners shape, but I would prefer a cleaner CSS3 solution. So, does one know how to fix this for Safari and Chrome on Mac? EDIT: Problem also happens in Chrome on Win7 jsFiddle here

• iOS OpenGL ES 1.1 jerky animation using CADisplayLink (reboot fixes for a while)

  I'm using OpenGL ES 1.1 and CADisplayLink to animate a 3d scene. If the iOS device has been rebooted fairly recently, the animation is smooth and the time delta between two displayLink.timestamp calls is fairly even. But after a few hours or days of the iOS device being used and my app is sometimes run a few times, the animation becomes jerky and the time deltas ramp up and then reset to a lower value only to ramp up again. The problem even occurs on my menu screen when almost no game related calculations are going on in the UpdateAnimation() function. I don't understand what is going on and why a fresh reboot will always fix this problem for a while.

• Structuring iPhone/iPad application views

  I have an idea about an application that I want to build and Im new to iPhone/iPad development (but not new to development in other languages/frameworks such as .NET and Java). I want to layout some views on the screen so that they animate (slide in) from different directions into their places. The question is about the strucuture of the application, if I have say 4 rectanglular areas on the screen that contain business data, such as contacts (name, photo, etc...) and they all take up different widths of the screen (say the first contact takes up one row of the screen, but the next 2 take up half the width of the next row each, and so on). Should I create a custom view for the different sized contact views, (i.e. LargeCustomView and SmallCustomView, and any other special type that I make) or should it all be one type, say, CustomerDetailsView which could be stretched to fit at design time? Also, if there were, say, 3 different instances of the same custom view on the one screen, are there 3 instances of the view controller also? Im a little confused about powering the data behind a view, can someone shed some light on this for me? Do I just set the properties (say an instance variable ContactForView) on the view controller for each instance? Thanks for any help you can give Cheers, Mark

• Improving the efficiency of multiple concurrent Core Animation animations

  I have a view in my app that is very similar to the month view in the built-in Calendar app. There's a subview that holds the individual cells (a custom UIView subclass that draws text into its layer), and when the user navigates to the next "month", I create the new cells and slide the view to show them. When the animation stops, I remove the old, hidden cells and set things up so it's ready to go for the next animation. This all works nicely. However, I'd like to animate the cells' text color, as in the Calendar app, so that the outgoing ones transition to a lighter color and the incoming ones transition to a darker color. The problems is that I can have as many as 70 cells, so doing individual animations is very slow -- between 5-10 fps on my iPhone 3GS. I'm trying to find a less computationally intense way of doing this. My reading of the Shark results is that the majority of the time is spent redrawing the text for each frame for each frame. This makes sense, since text rendering is hardly the cheapest operation. I've considered creating a second view -- one holding the "outgoing" state and one holding the "incoming" state and using a single opacity animation to gradually reveal the updated cells while both are sliding. I'm concerned that instead of having 70 cells, I'll have 140, which seems like a lot of views. So, is that too many views or would there be a better way of doing this?

• Differentiate Between UITableView Editing States?

  I have been looking at trying to differentiate between editing states in my UITableView. I need to call a method only when in editing mode after tapping the edit button, so when you get your cell slide in and you see the little circular delete icons but NOT when the user swipes to delete. Is there anyway I can differentiate between the two? Thanks. • gzip not working for some files using nginx

  Some files are not gzipped on their way to the user browser in our setup. for example http://myhostname.com/css/build/20120904-1.css http://myhostname.com/js/dojo/dn/main.js?20120904-1 http://myhostname.com/js/jquery-min/compiled.js?20120725-4 can not be zipped. my current configuration: location ~* \.(js|css|png|jpg|jpeg|gif|ico)\.*+$ { if ($args ~ [0-9]\.*+) { expires max; break; } expires max; log_not_found off; gzip on; } What needs to be adjusted to make gzip fly? I already tried several other options but don't want to continue with try&error on this. Thank you very much.

In Notepad++, there is a plugin manager which lets you install all the plugins you want to install by checking the box next to the plugin name & description. I was wandering if there is something like that for sublime text. For eg, I would like to install Zen Coding, JQuery Package for Sublime Text, Sublime Prefixr, JS Format, SublimeLinter and many other plugins all at once rather than typing each plugin in the Package Control and installing it one by one.

• How to simulate slow internet connection

  I currently deploy with GAE (google app engine) and I try to implement some AJAX validation. So I got a couple text-fields and "spinners" (ajax loaders) which should be displayed when an AJAX request is sent. But I deploy on my local computer (localhost), so the GAE SDK reacts very fast on any request. It takes about 50-70 ms(miliseconds) to perform the whole ajax request, which is far far away from the real. Is there a way to somehow simulate slow Internet connection? I just want to see how my "spinners" work. I want to test some ajax setting (jquery) about timeouts, errors and so on... Any ideas ?

• Strange Windows DIR command behavior

  I discovered this quite by accident while looking for a file with a number in the name. When I type: dir *number* (where number represents any number from 0 to 9 and with no spaces between the asterisks and the number) at the cmd.exe command prompt, it returns various files do not appear in any to fit the search criteria. What's weird, is that depending on the directory, some numbers will work and not others. An example is, in a directory associated with a website, I type the following: dir *4* and what is returned is: Directory of C:\Ampps\www\includes\pages 04/30/2012 03:55 PM 153 inventory_list_retrieve.php 06/18/2012 11:17 AM 6,756 ix.html 06/19/2012 01:47 PM 257,501 jquery.1.7.1.js 3 File(s) 264,410 bytes 0 Dir(s) 362,280,906,752 bytes free That just doesn't make any sense to me. Any clue? The question is posed on stackOverflow because the DIR command is often combined with FOR in batch programs. The strange DIR behavior would seem to make batch programs potentially unreliable if they use the DIR command.

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

• Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

  I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

Chrome & safari, flash the home page then it disappears and the screen goes white. Firefox never loads anything and the spinner just keeps spinning. Loads fine in explorer. Any ideas of what may be going on? If I use my laptop, on my same home internet connection, it works fine. This is not happening on all sites with analytics, just certain ones.

• Mac internet problems

  Our office is set up with mostly macs (7 of them) but we do have a windows laptop and a windows desktop on the network as well. The network is configured with a modem going into a switch/router throughout the office to the computers, along with a wireless router. Everything runs fine most of the time, but periodically while using the web, certain sites will stop loading and timeout repeatedly. This usually lasts 20 minutes or so and can be incredibly annoying. Resetting the modem/router and/or rebooting the computer never helps. The weirdest part is that in almost every case, the websites are fine on our Windows machines. I frequently use github, google, Stack Overflow, and jQuery reference and I can count on the sites being unavailable to me at least once a day. While I can't get them to load, I can spin my chair around to the windows server behind me and load the sites just fine. Any idea what the hell could be going on here?

I try go to Internet Option enable everything, including javascript restart it. But all the javascript still disabled. I go to jQuery API website, test the javascript, at the Demo part nothing show. Even I write a alert("hello"); in a html file, nothing come out. I am not sure what happen to my Internet Explorer. Initially I am using IE8, I try to update to IE9Beta, IE9RC, the problem start from IE8-IE9RC still haven't resolved. I am not sure what application crash with the IE. Please advice! It is Urgent.   Possible Duplicate: How do you do Load Testing and Capacity Planning for Web Sites I’m working on a community platform writen in PHP, MySQL. I have some questions about the server usage maybe someone can help me out. The community is based on JQuery with many ajax requests to update content. It makes 5 - 10 AJAX(Json, GET, POST) requests every 5 seconds, the requests fetch user data like user notifications and messages by doing mySQL queries. I wonder how a server will handle this when there are for more than 5000 users online. Then it will be 50.000 requests every 5 seconds, what kind of server you need to handle this? Or maybe even more, when there are 15.000 users online, 150.000 requests every 5 seconds. My webserver have the following specs. Xeon Quad 2048MB 5000GB traffic Will it be good enough, and for how many users? Anyone can help me out or know where to find such information, like make a calculation?

• Making Sense of ASP.NET Paths

  ASP.Net includes quite a plethora of properties to retrieve path information about the current request, control and application. There's a ton of information available about paths on the Request object, some of it appearing to overlap and some of it buried several levels down, and it can be confusing to find just the right path that you are looking for. To keep things straight I thought it a good idea to summarize the path options along with descriptions and example paths. I wrote a post about this a long time ago in 2004 and I find myself frequently going back to that page to quickly figure out which path I’m looking for in processing the current URL. Apparently a lot of people must be doing the same, because the original post is the second most visited even to this date on this blog to the tune of nearly 500 hits per day. So, I decided to update and expand a bit on the original post with a little more information and clarification based on the original comments. Request Object Paths Available Here's a list of the Path related properties on the Request object (and the Page object). Assume a path like http://www.west-wind.com/webstore/admin/paths.aspx for the paths below where webstore is the name of the virtual. .blackborder td { border-bottom: solid 1px silver; border-left: solid 1px silver; } Request Property Description and Value ApplicationPath Returns the web root-relative logical path to the virtual root of this app. /webstore/ PhysicalApplicationPath Returns local file system path of the virtual root for this app. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\webstore PhysicalPath Returns the local file system path to the current script or path. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\webstore\admin\paths.aspx Path FilePath CurrentExecutionFilePath All of these return the full root relative logical path to the script page including path and scriptname. CurrentExcecutionFilePath will return the ‘current’ request path after a Transfer/Execute call while FilePath will always return the original request’s path. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx AppRelativeCurrentExecutionFilePath Returns an ASP.NET root relative virtual path to the script or path for the current request. If in  a Transfer/Execute call the transferred Path is returned. ~/admin/paths.aspx PathInfo Returns any extra path following the script name. If no extra path is provided returns the root-relative path (returns text in red below). string.Empty if no PathInfo is available. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx/ExtraPathInfo RawUrl Returns the full root relative URL including querystring and extra path as a string. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx?sku=wwhelp40 Url Returns a fully qualified URL including querystring and extra path. Note this is a Uri instance rather than string. http://www.west-wind.com/webstore/admin/paths.aspx?sku=wwhelp40 UrlReferrer The fully qualified URL of the page that sent the request. This is also a Uri instance and this value is null if the page was directly accessed by typing into the address bar or using an HttpClient based Referrer client Http header. http://www.west-wind.com/webstore/default.aspx?Info Control.TemplateSourceDirectory Returns the logical path to the folder of the page, master or user control on which it is called. This is useful if you need to know the path only to a Page or control from within the control. For non-file controls this returns the Page path. /webstore/admin/ As you can see there’s a ton of information available there for each of the three common path formats: Physical Path is an OS type path that points to a path or file on disk. Logical Path is a Web path that is relative to the Web server’s root. It includes the virtual plus the application relative path. ~/ (Root-relative) Path is an ASP.NET specific path that includes ~/ to indicate the virtual root Web path. ASP.NET can convert virtual paths into either logical paths using Control.ResolveUrl(), or physical paths using Server.MapPath(). Root relative paths are useful for specifying portable URLs that don’t rely on relative directory structures and very useful from within control or component code. You should be able to get any necessary format from ASP.NET from just about any path or script using these mechanisms. ~/ Root Relative Paths and ResolveUrl() and ResolveClientUrl() ASP.NET supports root-relative virtual path syntax in most of its URL properties in Web Forms. So you can easily specify a root relative path in a control rather than a location relative path: <asp:Image runat="server" ID="imgHelp" ImageUrl="~/images/help.gif" /> ASP.NET internally resolves this URL by using ResolveUrl("~/images/help.gif") to arrive at the root-relative URL of /webstore/images/help.gif which uses the Request.ApplicationPath as the basepath to replace the ~. By convention any custom Web controls also should use ResolveUrl() on URL properties to provide the same functionality. In your own code you can use Page.ResolveUrl() or Control.ResolveUrl() to accomplish the same thing: string imgPath = this.ResolveUrl("~/images/help.gif"); imgHelp.ImageUrl = imgPath; Unfortunately ResolveUrl() is limited to WebForm pages, so if you’re in an HttpHandler or Module it’s not available. ASP.NET Mvc also has it’s own more generic version of ResolveUrl in Url.Decode: <script src="<%= Url.Content("~/scripts/new.js") %>" type="text/javascript"></script> which is part of the UrlHelper class. In ASP.NET MVC the above sort of syntax is actually even more crucial than in WebForms due to the fact that views are not referencing specific pages but rather are often path based which can lead to various variations on how a particular view is referenced. In a Module or Handler code Control.ResolveUrl() unfortunately is not available which in retrospect seems like an odd design choice – URL resolution really should happen on a Request basis not as part of the Page framework. Luckily you can also rely on the static VirtualPathUtility class: string path = VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute("~/admin/paths.aspx"); VirtualPathUtility also many other quite useful methods for dealing with paths and converting between the various kinds of paths supported. One thing to watch out for is that ToAbsolute() will throw an exception if a query string is provided and doesn’t work on fully qualified URLs. I wrote about this topic with a custom solution that works fully qualified URLs and query strings here (check comments for some interesting discussions too). Similar to ResolveUrl() is ResolveClientUrl() which creates a fully qualified HTTP path that includes the protocol and domain name. It’s rare that this full resolution is needed but can be useful in some scenarios. Mapping Virtual Paths to Physical Paths with Server.MapPath() If you need to map root relative or current folder relative URLs to physical URLs or you can use HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath(). Inside of a Page you can do the following: string physicalPath = Server.MapPath("~/scripts/ww.jquery.js")); MapPath is pretty flexible and it understands both ASP.NET style virtual paths as well as plain relative paths, so the following also works. string physicalPath = Server.MapPath("scripts/silverlight.js"); as well as dot relative syntax: string physicalPath = Server.MapPath("../scripts/jquery.js"); Once you have the physical path you can perform standard System.IO Path and File operations on the file. Remember with physical paths and IO or copy operations you need to make sure you have permissions to access files and folders based on the Web server user account that is active (NETWORK SERVICE, ASPNET typically). Note the Server.MapPath will not map up beyond the virtual root of the application for security reasons. Server and Host Information Between these settings you can get all the information you may need to figure out where you are at and to build new Url if necessary. If you need to build a URL completely from scratch you can get access to information about the server you are accessing: Server Variable Function and Example SERVER_NAME The of the domain or IP Address wwww.west-wind.com or 127.0.0.1 SERVER_PORT The port that the request runs under. 80 SERVER_PORT_SECURE Determines whether https: was used. 0 or 1 APPL_MD_PATH ADSI DirectoryServices path to the virtual root directory. Note that LM typically doesn’t work for ADSI access so you should replace that with LOCALHOST or the machine’s NetBios name. /LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/webstore Request.Url and Uri Parsing If you still need more control over the current request URL or  you need to create new URLs from an existing one, the current Request.Url Uri property offers a lot of control. Using the Uri class and UriBuilder makes it easy to retrieve parts of a URL and create new URLs based on existing URL. The UriBuilder class is the preferred way to create URLs – much preferable over creating URIs via string concatenation. Uri Property Function Scheme The URL scheme or protocol prefix. http or https Port The port if specifically specified. DnsSafeHost The domain name or local host NetBios machine name www.west-wind.com or rasnote LocalPath The full path of the URL including script name and extra PathInfo. /webstore/admin/paths.aspx Query The query string if any ?id=1 The Uri class itself is great for retrieving Uri parts, but most of the properties are read only if you need to modify a URL in order to change it you can use the UriBuilder class to load up an existing URL and modify it to create a new one. Here are a few common operations I’ve needed to do to get specific URLs: Convert the Request URL to an SSL/HTTPS link For example to take the current request URL and converted  it to a secure URL can be done like this: UriBuilder build = new UriBuilder(Request.Url); build.Scheme = "https"; build.Port = -1; // don't inject port Uri newUri = build.Uri; string newUrl = build.ToString(); Retrieve the fully qualified URL without a QueryString AFAIK, there’s no native routine to retrieve the current request URL without the query string. It’s easy to do with UriBuilder however: UriBuilder builder = newUriBuilder(Request.Url); builder.Query = ""; stringlogicalPathWithoutQuery = builder.ToString(); What else? I took a look through the old post’s comments and addressed as many of the questions and comments that came up in there. With a few small and silly exceptions this update post handles most of these. • Releasing Shrinkr – An ASP.NET MVC Url Shrinking Service

  Few months back, I started blogging on developing a Url Shrinking Service in ASP.NET MVC, but could not complete it due to my engagement with my professional projects. Recently, I was able to manage some time for this project to complete the remaining features that we planned for the initial release. • Directory structure for a website (js/css/img folders)

  For years I've been using the following directory structure for my websites: <root> ->js ->jquery.js ->tooltip.js ->someplugin.js ->css ->styles.css ->someplugin.css ->images -> all website images... it seemed perfectly fine to me until I began to use different 3rd-party components. For example, today I've downloaded a datetime picker javascript component that looks for its images in the same directory where its css file is located (css file contains urls like "url('calendar.png')"). So now I have 3 options: 1) put datepicker.css into my css directory and put its images along. I don't really like this option because I will have both css and image files inside the css directory and it is weird. Also I might meet files from different components with the same name, such as 2 different components, which link to background.png from their css files. I will have to fix those name collisions (by renaming one of the files and editing the corresponding file that contains the link). 2) put datepicker.css into my css directory, put its images into the images directory and edit datepicker.css to look for the images in the images directory. This option is ok but I have to spend some time to edit 3rd-party components to fit them to my site structure. Again, name collisions may occur here (as described in the previous option) and I will have to fix them. 3) put datepicker.js, datepicker.css and its images into a separate directory, let's say /3rdParty/datepicker/ and place the files as it was intended by the author (i.e., for example, /3rdParty/datepicker/css/datepicker.css, /3rdParty/datepicker/css/something.png, etc.). Now I begin to think that this option is the most correct. Experienced web developers, what do you recommend?

• Getting beyond basic web programming languages. How to be awesome?

  I'm a web developer that's done a bunch of projects using PHP, JQuery/JS, Mysql using PhPMyAdmin, CSS, HTML and a tiny bit of XML. Basically lots of work with CMS's and freehand coding. I'm looking to take things to the next level. I've done a lot of freelance and small contract work, but I'm dying to excel. I'm tired of acting as tech support for all these "non-tech" companies that barely know how to use their own computers..."really, you didn't think to backup your files before switching to a new server??". Think of potential employers as amazon, netflix, twitter, google, etc. I don't necessarily want to work for these guys specifically, but potentially organizations like this. I could be wrong, but I feel like a big company like this would laugh at me if I interviewed. For example, how helpful is knowing Ruby, SQL (commands without interface), C++, API's, Oracle, Java, debugging, qa, etc? (I realize this is a very random list). I use Notepad ++, but have heard that the bigger boys use IDE interfaces. I'm not really interested in building desktop apps, only web related stuff. I feel like I've reached my potential and want to really take it up a notch. I see a lot of projects on GitHub and I'm amazed at what people have created. Note - my degree is in economics but I've done web dev since high school. I definitely wish I took more comp sci/programming courses in college. I'm 27 and want to be awesome at web dev before it's too late. Not just decent. Any advice? Book suggestions? Thanks

• Advise on how to move from a .net developer role to a web developer role

  I've been working primarily as a .net developer for the past 4 years for a financial services company. I've worked on .net 1.1, 2.0, 3.5 and have done the 3.5 enterprise app developer cert (not that that's worth a whole lot!). Before that I worked as a java developer with a bit of Flex thrown in for just over a year. My educational background is an Electronic and computer engineering degree, a higher diploma in systems analysis as well as one in web development (this was mainly java - JSP, Spring, etc) and a science masters in software design and development. I really feel like a change and would like to move to a different field to experience something different. I've done some courses in RoR and played around with it a bit in my spare time. Similarly I've done various web and mobile courses and done up some mobile webapps along with android and ios equivalents (haven't tried pushing them up to the app stores yet but may be worth tidying them up and doing that). I currently work long enough hours so find it hard to find time to work on too many side projects to get a decent portfolio together. But when I do work on the web stuff I do find it really enjoyable so think it's something I'd like to do full time. However, since my experience is pretty much all .net and financial services I find it very hard to get my foot in the door anywhere or get past a phone screen unless their specifically looking for someone with .net knowledge. What is the best way to move into a web development role without starting from scratch again. I do think a lot of the skills I have translate over but I seem to just get paired with .net jobs whenever I look around? Apart from js, jquery, html5, objective C are there any other technologies I should be looking into?
