How to get more info out of the uninformative Windows 8 BSoD?

Windows 8's Blue Screen of Death is different from the previous Windows versions' one: In order to find out what caused the problem you need to write down or remember the search term it presents you with. The two search terms I have seen suggested so far are SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED. Both of them are quite generic terms. While it’s nice not to have to look at a blue screen full of text, the previous BSoD was more informative than the Windows 8 BSoD, since it contained a detailed error code (information for diagnostic purposes that was collected as the operating system performed a bug check), which could get you closer to tracking down the root of the problem. How can I get more information about the error Windows 8 has encountered, in order to track down the root of the problem?

However, I will often want to know not the current action, but the "root" action being called; by this I mean I may have a view called "Login", which is my login page. This view may include another partial view "LeftNav". When OnActionExecuting is called for LeftNav, I want to be able to determine that it is really being called for the "root" aciton of Login. I realise that by calling RouteTable.Routes.GetRouteData(actionExecutingContext.HttpContext), I can get the route for the "root" request, but how to turn this into method and type info? The only solution I have so far, is something like: var routeData = RouteTable.Routes.GetRouteData(actionExecutingContext.HttpContext) var routeController = (string)routeData.Values["controller"]; var routeAction = (string)routeData.Values["action"]; The problem with this is that "routeController" is the controller name with the "Controller" suffix removed, and is not fully qualified; ie it is "Login", rather than "MyCode.Website.LoginController". How do I get Spotlight attributes to display in the get info window?

I have created a spotlight importer for comic files. The attributes are successfully imported and searchable. The one thing that remains is getting the attributes to display in a file's get info window. It seems that this should be a simple matter of editing the schema.xml file so the attributes are nested inside displayattrs tags. Unfortunately this does not seem to be working. I simplified the plugin for testing. What do you call a set of Javascript closures that share a common context?

I've been trying to learn closures (in Javascript), which kind of hurts my brain after way too many years with C# and C++. I think I now have a basic understanding, but one thing bothers me: I've visited lots of websites in this Quest for Knowledge, and nowhere have I seen a word (or even a simple two-word phrase) that means "a set of Javascript closures that share a common execution context". For example: function CreateThingy (name, initialValue) { var myName = name; var myValue = initialValue; var retObj = new Object; retObj.getName = function() { return myName; } retObj.getValue = function() { return myValue; } retObj.setValue = function(newValue) { myValue = newValue; } return retObj; }; From what I've read, this seems to be one common way of implementing data hiding. The value returned by CreateThingy is, of course, an object, but what would you call the set of functions which are properties of that object? Each one is a closure, but I'd like a name I can used to describe (and think about) all of them together as one conceptual entity, and I'd rather use a commonly accepted name than make one up. My computer recently had a hardware upgrade and now runs on Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu 11.04 as dual boot using the ISO I got from ubuntu.com downloaded onto my USB stick. Restarting with the USB stick, I was able to install Ubuntu 11.04 choosing the option: Install Ubuntu 11.04 side by side with Windows 7 (or something like that). No errors were encountered on installation. However on restarting, there was no GRUB; the system went straight into Windows 7. Assuming Ubuntu 11.04 was installed on device sdb1, do this: sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt Then do this: sudo grub-install--root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb Notice there are two dashes in front of the root directory, and I'm not using sdb1 but sdb. Since the command in step 15 had reinstalled Grub 2, now we need to unmount the /mnt (i.e. sdb1) to clean up. Do this: sudo umount /mnt Reboot and remove Ubuntu 11.04 CD/DVD from disk tray. Log into Ubuntu 11.04 (you have no choice but it will make you log into Ubuntu 11.04 at this point). Open up a terminal in Ubuntu 11.04 (using real installation, not live CD/DVD). Execute this command: sudo update-grub Reboot the machine.

Java web-app debugging not possible due to direct undeploy on debug

When i try to debug my webapp it starts up the tomcat server and the application, but shuts down the debugger shortly before the app gets usable. Starting ActiveMQ message listener in Tomcat?

I've created an ActiveMQ MessageListener and configured it using Spring. I'm hosting the listener in Tomcat. When I start up the web application (that features only the listener), should the listener automatically start? Or do I need additional configuration? Here's what I have.
