• Can you write to a file (on a disk) in JavaScript?

  I don't wanna come across as a troll, so please excuse my question's demeanor, but I am a novice-intermediate programmer taking a stab at AJAX. While reading up on JavaScript I found it curious that most of the examples I've been drawing on use PHP for such an operation. I know many of you may argue that 'I'm doing it wrong' or 'JavaScript is a client-side language' etc. but the question stands. . .can you write a file in only JavaScript? • Subscribe to the 'complete' event of a .load() on a specific DOM element?

  Hi all, I already use both .live() and .bind('ajaxComplete') to accomplish certain related tasks, but I have found myself wanting to be able to listen for the 'complete' event of a specific DOM element which will call jQuery's .load() at various times. In this situation I don't want to listen for ALL complete events globally (unless someone can show me how to get the proper target from the event object returned by 'ajaxComplete'). I would like to be able to do something like this: $('.selector').load('url.php',{data:data},function(){ ... }); and then somewhere else, attach a handler to listen and execute some other code whenever that ajax call fires and completes: $('.selector').bind('complete',function(){ ... }); is there any way to do this? or must i always make use of the 'complete' event within the context of the load() method?

• How to encode content to send them via jquery to a php file?

  I am trying to send a form to a php file via jquery. The problem is, that the content, which has to be sent to the php file, contains slashes (/) since there is bb code inside. So I tried the following: $.ajax( { type: "POST", url: "create.php", data: "content=" + encodeURIComponent(content), cache: false, success: function(message) { $("#somediv").html(message); } }); In the php file I use rawurldecode to decode the content and get my bb codes back which I can then transform into html. The problem is as soon as I put the encodeURIComponent() it will ouput: [object HTMLTextAreaElement] What does that mean, where is my mistake? Thanks for your help! phpheini

  Hi: I'm start using cakephp and i made a demo app using AjaxHelper $ajax->link('title', 'url', array('update' => 'mydiv')) Now i want to migrate that to cakephp 1.3 and AjaxHelper is deprecated on cake 1.3 and will be removed, so i want to accomplish the same with JsHelper which is replacing the functionality of AjaxHelper and JavascriptHelper I just can't find how to do that. I want to upgrade the versions to use jQuery out of the box with cakephp 1.3 and get rid of Prototype javascript library. so, any help ? I've already read the migration guide and nothing found yet.

• Calculating number of online visitors?

  i need to show the number of online visitors, but there is a problem with selecting algoritm to do it! maybe i must create a table in DB, where i'll store ip addresses of visitors and time of visit! by so i can show the count of ip addresses, which's time = NOW() - 10 minutes, for example...("now()-10 minutes" is just to show the logic, i know that this is not a function:) is this goog way to go? or maybe it's better to use AJAX methods to store the data? please give me an idea. • Dynamic web widget

  My vendor offers a widget creation service where I can login to their page, set initial values of a search form, after the save button is clicked, I can copy & paste the script code on my website to display a product search result widget. I am thinking to change this static widget to a dynamic one. Since my programming knowledge is limited, can experts tell me if it's possible to login https remotely (using cURL) and set search form values equal to values on my page (every time my page content changes, it will change the form value), then save the form. So the widget script I pasted on my page will always be refreshed to new search result. So the issue will involve cross domain, form submission & server/browser communication. I know a little jQuery, PHP, Ajax, cURL but so far I stuck with just having an idea but not really sure how to implement it.

• How to load a script without blocking the whole page on Google Chrome?

  I'm developing a website that uses an Ajax plugin to like/dislike/comments an item. But when there are multiple items on the same page, the page takes too long to be displayed. On google chrome for instance, for 10 items you have to wait something like 10 seconds before you can see anything. But in Firefox, and IE 8, the other elements of the page are displayed, and only the likes/dislikes take some time. But the advantage is that they are displayed as soon as they are loaded. So this is much better. So how come Google Chrome is less efficient than Firefox and IE? Is there a trick to display on Chrome the page like in Firefox?   I know this has been covered a few times, but I'm completely a noob when it comes to javascript so I have no idea what I'm doing. I am running a javascript that sends variables to a php file and that info is ajaxed into the current page using innerhtml. Here is that part of the code... `function givingHistory(dyear,did) { var divname="giving" + dyear; $.ajax({ url: 'finance/givinghistory.php', type: 'POST', data: { year: dyear, id: did }, success: function(givedata) { document.getElementById(divname).innerHTML = givedata; } }); } ` In the givedata function response from the php file there is a call to another javascript function that is already loaded in my common .js file (so both javascript functions are loaded when the page loads). How do I get the onClick that is added via innerhtml to work? Inside the php file, I check to see if id = a php session variable. If it does it spits out the text that includes the onClick.

• How can I install asp.net mvc 2 on IIS7?

  I have developed an ASP.NET MVC 2 website, and now need to deploy it to my web server. I've overcome some hurdles already, since ASP.NET was not installed etc. but I've now got to the point where I can serve up plain content files, and if I try to hit one of my MVC URLs I get this: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Not surprising, that, as I've not installed MVC2. Problem is, I can't find any good information about how to install it! The Microsoft Download Center lists 3 files, none of which look promising: ASP.NET-MVC-2-RTM-Release-Notes.doc AspNetMVC2_VS2008.exe mvc2-ms-pl.zip The site doesn't bother to explain what the files actually are, but I assume that the last file is the source code. That's what it looks like, anyway. The release notes are no help whatsoever, since they're all about installing on your development machine, and indeed the name of the EXE makes it clear that that's all about Visual Studio integration too. So how do I actually deploy the darn thing? The other option linked to from Scott Gu's blog is the Microsoft Web Platform Installer. Now, I don't want to install more than just MVC2, and I already have IIS etc. set up, so this seems a bit heavy. But it's all academic, as it refuses to run on my server, saying "your system is not supported" or words to that effect. (The server is Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2, so I really don't know what it's problem is). Help! [It's ridiculous that this should be so hard - or perhaps not hard at all, but certainly a well-kept secret!]

• ASP.NET MVC2 and MemberShipProvider: How well do they go together?

  I have an existing ASP.NET application with lots of users and a large database. Now I want to have it in MVC 2. I do not want to migrate, I do it more or less from scratch. The database I want to keep and not touch too much. I already have my database tables and I also want to keep my LINQ to SQL-Layer. I didn't use a MembershipProvider in my current implementation (in ASP.NET 1.0 that wasn't strongly supported). So, either I write my own Membershipprovider to meet the needs of my database and app or I don't use the membershipprovider at all. I'd like to understand the consequences if I don't use the membership provider. What is linked to that? I understand that in ASP.NET the Login-Controls are linked to the provider. The AccountModel which is automatically generated with MVC2 could easily be changed to support my existing logic. What happens when a user is identified by a an AuthCookie? Does MVC use the MembershipProvider then? Am I overlooking something? I have the same questions regarding RoleProvider. Input is greatly appreciated.

  I deployed some SSRS reports created in Visual Studio 2008 to localhost:8080/ReportServer. ( Using VS 2008 .NET , Version 9.0.21022.8, SQL Server 2008 and XP Prof.) Calling them in the Webbrowser works fine, but now I'm trying to use them in an ASP.NET app with ReportViewer in VS 2008 and using local ASP.NET Development Server. • How do I use a .NET class in VBA? Syntax help!

  ok I have couple of .NET classes that I want to use in VBA. So I must register them through COM and all that. I think I have the COM registration figured out (finally) but now I need help with the syntax of how to create the objects. Here is some pseudo code showing what I am trying to do. EDIT: Changed Attached Objects to return an ArrayList instead of a List The .NET classes look like this... public class ResourceManagment { public ResourceManagment() { // Default Constructor } public static List<RandomObject> AttachedObjects() { ArrayList list = new ArrayList(); return list; } } public class RandomObject { // public RandomObject(int someParam) { } } OK, so this is what I would like to do in VBA (demonstrated in C#) but I don't know how... public class VBAClass { public void main() { ArrayList myList = ResourceManagment.AttachedObjects(); foreach(RandomObject x in myList) { // Do something with RandomObject x like list them in a Combobox } } } One thing to note is that RandomObject does not have a public default constructor. So I can not create an instance of it like Dim x As New RandomObject. MSDN says that you can not instantiate an object that doesn't have a default constructor through COM but you can still use the object type if it is returned by another method... Types must have a public default constructor to be instantiated through COM. Managed, public types are visible to COM. However, without a public default constructor (a constructor without arguments), COM clients cannot create an instance of the type. COM clients can still use the type if the type is instantiated in another way and the instance is returned to the COM client. You may include overloaded constructors that accept varying arguments for these types. However, constructors that accept arguments may only be called from managed (.NET) code.   I am currently learning F# and functional programming in general (from a C# background) and I have a question about using .net CLR objects during my processing. Note XslCompiledTransform.Load works on an object, and returns void. Also the XslCompiledTransform.Transform requires a memorystream object and returns void. The above strategy used is to add the object at the end (the ; mem) to return a value and make functional programming work. When we want to do this one after another we have a function on each line with a return value at the end: let myFunc = new XmlDocument("doc") |> fun a -> a.Load("report.xml"); a |> fun a -> a.AppendChild(new XmlElement("Happy")); a Is there a more correct way (in terms of functional programming) to handle .net objects and objects that were created in a more OO environment? • Maintaining session information between 2 asp.net calls programmatically?

  Hi, I'm not sure if I'll be clear enough in my explaination to make you guys understand, but I'll try. Here's my problem: We have an external site which the users in our company connect to by giving their corresponding username and password. The external site is an ASP.NET website. We want to integrate this website into our intranet portal so that the users don't have to enter their UN/Pwd to login to the website. Since the target website has no provision for SSO, we are simulating the POST request to login. So far so good. We are now required to perform an action after the initial login is done, on an another page. We can simulate the corresponding POST request as well. But the problem is since we are not maintaining any session information in our initial POST request, it always redirects to the login screen! Is there any way to maintain ASP.NET session information between multiple calls done programmatically? Can we create an ASP.NET session id cookie programmatically and then pass it along with our initial request? Or this is not possible at all? Any comments are appreciated. Thanks for your help. • From VB6 to .net via COM and Remoting...What a mess!

  I have some legacy vb6 applications that need to talk to my .Net engine application. The engine provides an interface that can be connected to via .net Remoting. Now I have a stub class library that wraps all of the types that the interface exposes. The purpose of this stub is to translate my .net types into COM-friendly types. When I run this class library as a console application, it is able to connect to the engine, call various methods, and successfully return the wrapped types. The next step in the chain is to allow my VB6 application to call this COM enabled stub. This works fine for my main engine-entry type (IModelFetcher which is wrapped as COM_ModelFetcher). However, when I try and get any of the model fetcher's model types (IClientModel, wrapped as COM_IClientModel, IUserModel, wrapped as COM_IUserModel, e.t.c.), I get the following exception: [Exception - type: System.InvalidCastException 'Return argument has an invalid type.'] in mscorlib at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.ValidateReturnArg(Object arg, Type paramType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.PropagateOutParameters(IMessage msg, Object[] outArgs, Object returnValue) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.HandleReturnMessage(IMessage reqMsg, IMessage retMsg) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.PrivateInvoke(MessageData& msgData, Int32 type) at AWT.Common.AWTEngineInterface.IModelFetcher.get_ClientModel() at AWT.Common.AWTEngineCOMInterface.COM_ModelFetcher.GetClientModel() The first thing I did when I saw this was to handle the 'AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AssemblyResolve' event, and this allowed me to load the required assemblies. However, I'm still getting this exception now. My AssemblyResolve event handler is loading three assemblies correctly, and I can confirm that it does not get called prior to this exception. Can someone help me untie myself from this mess of interprocess communication?!

• In which order is model binding and validation done in ASP.NET MVC 2?

  I am using ASP.NET MVC 2, and am using a view-model per view approach. I am also using Automapper to map properties from my domain-model to the view-model. Take this example view-model (with Required data annotation attributes for validation purposes): public class BlogPost_ViewModel { public int Id { get; set; } [Required] public string Title { get; set; } [Required] public string Text { get; set; } } In the post editor view I am using a rich text editor (CKeditor). Because CKeditor is a HTML editor, I ideally need CKeditor to HTMLencode the user's input when the form is submitted, so that ASP.NET's input validation does not complain. This is not a problem as CKeditor has this functionality built in, however I need CKeditor's output decoded before mapping back to the domain object (via Automapper). I am wanting to add a new property (to the view-model above) to solve this, as follows: public string HTMLEncodedText { get { return HTMLEncode(Text); } set { Text = HTMLDecode(value); } } I can then bind this property to CKeditor in the view, but still use Automapper to map the 'Text' property in the controller - all without having to turn input-validation off. My question is: do you know how the model binding and validation process in ASP.NET MVC 2 works? Are all model properties binded before validation is carried out? Or is each individual property get validated when it is being set. I think ideally for my idea to work, all properties need to be set before the model is validated.

• Are there any ASP.NET MVC subscription-based starter kits or examples?

  Basically something that handles the low-level "plumbing" code for a subscription-based service. I see a lot of things dealing with basic membership, but nothing that handles the subscription aspect (recurring billing, automated jobs for setting up billing, notification for billing, etc). This might be the one thing that keeps me from using ASP.NET MVC for my SaaS idea, since it would take a fair amount of development time to write my own; if I go with my other option, Ruby on Rails, I can buy a kit that does all of this for $250. I haven't found anything even remotely close to this for .NET - all of the SaaS sample apps I've seen are more like StackOverflow et all where you have one site that multiple people log on to, not the web application model where you have subscribers who are billed monthly, each of whom has users and other entities (e.g. Customers, Tasks, etc) for their own site. Is there anything similar for ASP.NET, or some kind of guidelines for writing my own if I have to, so I don't waste too much time? As a startup that means that I'm doing all the coding myself. I've found this, but it seems to only be for billing and didn't seem to have much (any?) documentation on exactly how to set it up.

• How can I do rapid application development with ASP.NET MVC?

  I've been given a short amount of time (~80 hours to start with) to replace an existing Access database with a full-blown SQL + Web system, and I'm enumerating my options. I would like to use ASP.NET MVC, but I'm unsure of how to use it effectively with my short timetable. For the database backend I'll be using Linq to SQL as it's a product I already know and can get something working with it quickly. Does anyone have any experience with using ASP.NET MVC in this way and can share some insight? Edit: The reason I've been interested in ASP.NET MVC is because I know (100% confirmed) that there will be more work to do after this first round, and I'd like my maintenance work to be as easy as possible. In my experience Webforms applications tend to break down over repeated maintenance, despite discipline. Maybe there's a middle ground? How difficult would it to be for me to, say, build the app with Webforms, then migrate it to MVC later when I have more time budgeted to the project? Edit 2: Further background: the Access application I'm replacing is used in some capacity by everyone in the building, and since it was upgraded from Access 98 to 2003 it's been crashing daily, causing hours of lost productivity as people have to re-enter data since the last backup. This is the reason for the short amount of time - this is a critical business function, and they can't afford to keep re-entering data on a daily basis.

  Is there a resource on the web that describes various form scenarios in ASP.NET MVC, and gives example solutions within a sensible, consistent design philosophy? Examples of such scenarios might be: One-to-many forms, like invoice data-entry forms. Foreign-table forms such as Add New User in a form that requires specifying a user Forms that require dynamic interaction, using Ajax or JSON. Popup forms Forms requiring multiple data records to be input, without postbacks. Note that there is considerable conceptual and technological overlap among these example scenarios. I am aware that there is a vast patchwork quilt of available technologies and examples out there that provide partial solutions and pieces of solutions, such as jQuery Ajax, CSS, and so forth. But I would like guidance in using these technologies in more effective and consistent ways. I am not considering web forms integration with an ASP.NET MVC application; I would still like my applications to be pure MVC. Nor am I, at the moment, considering a paid solution like Telerik. But I would like to know if someone has already done some of the work combining these technologies into a consistent, cohesive whole, that follows a sensible design philosophy. (an open source framework, perhaps?)

• Running a GWT application (including Applets) inside an IFRAME from an ASP.NET 3.5 app?

  We are looking at integrating a full-blown GWT (Google Web Toolkit 2.0) application with an existing ASP.NET 3.5 application. My first gut reaction is that this is a horrible frankenstein idea. However, the customer has insisted that we use this application developed by a third-party. I have almost NO CONTROL over the development of the GWT app. My first thought is to actually attempt to embed this in an iFrame. Because GWT is running under Tomcat/Jakarta, it is hosted on a different server from the .NET app so the iFrame src will be to a URL on the other machine. I need to utilize our own ASP.NET authorization scheme to restrict access to the embedded GWT application. The GWT app also uses embedded java applets, which don't seem to be working right now inside the iframe. The GWT app makes calls to a backend server (using GWT-RPC?). Any major problems with this approach that anyone can see? Will GWT work on an iframe while hosted on a different machine? NOTE: SIMPLY ADDING A DIV WITH THE SAME NAME DOES NOT WORK FOR THIS!

• ASP.NET Memory Usage in IIS is FAR greater than in DevEnv. Is this normal?

  Greetings! I have an ASP.NET app that scrapes data from a handful of external pages, parses the relevant bits and displays them in a table. Total data retrieved is 3-4MB and the resulting page is about 1MB. I am using synchronous WebRequest GetResponse for the retrieval, but the same problem existed using an asynchronous BeginGetResponse/EndGetResponse process. There is no database access, no session storage, no caching, but an in-memory list of about 100 objects (total 1MB of data), plus a good amount of AJAX (AjaxControlToolkit). This issue appears on the very first run of the app, even if I have restarted IIS. The issue: When I run the app on my dev computer, the maximum commit charge is about 1.5GB. The biggest user, measured by Task Manager's VM Size, is WebDev.WebServer.exe (600MB). The app runs perfectly. When I run it on my rent-a-server (IIS 7.5, 1GB RAM), the maximum commit charge is over 3.8GB. The biggest user is w3wp.exe at 2.7GB. IIS grinds to a halt and spits out a timed-out error page. Given my limited server budget and the hope of having multiple simultaneous users, I'm kind of in a panic. Is this normal? If I bump the server RAM up to 4GB, will that be enough? Will multiple users require even more memory? Could the culprit be AJAX or the list of objects? Thanks for any insight you can provide.
