• Culture Sensitive GetHashCode

  Hi, I'm writing a c# application that will process some text and provide basic query functions. In order to ensure the best possible support for other languages, I am allowing the users of the application to specify the System.Globalization.CultureInfo (via the "en-GB" style code) and also the full range of collation options using the System.Globalization.CompareOptions flags enum. For regular string comparison I'm then using a combination of: a) String.Compare overload that accepts the culture and options b) For some bulk processes I'm caching the byte data (KeyData) from CompareInfo.GetSortKey (overload that accepts the options) and using a byte-by-byte comparison of the KeyData. This seemed fine (although please comment if you think these two methods shouldn't be mixed), but then I had reason to use the HashSet< class which only has an overload for IEqualityComparer<. MS documentation seems to suggest that I should use StringComparer (which implements both IEqualityComparer< and IComparer<), but this only seems to support the "IgnoreCase" option from CompareOptions and not "IgnoreKanaType", "IgnoreSymbols", "IgnoreWidth" etc. I'm assuming that a StringComparer that ignores these other options could produce different hashcodes for two strings that might be considered the same using my other comparison options. I'd therefore get incorrect results from my application. Only thought at the moment is to create my own IEqualityComparer< that generates a hashcode from the SortKey.KeyData and compares eqality be using the String.Compare overload. Any suggestions?

  I have a hobby project, which is basically to maintain 'todo' tasks in the way I like. One task can be described as: public class TodoItem { private String subject; private Date dueBy; private Date startBy; private Priority priority; private String category; private Status status; private String notes; } As you can imagine I would have 1000s of todo items at a given time. What is the best strategy to store a todo item? (currently on an XML file) such that all the items are loaded quickly up on app start up(the application shows kind of a dashboard of all the items at start up)? What is the best way to design its back-end so that it can be ported to Android/or a J2ME based phone? Currently this is done using Java Swing. What should I concentrate on so that it works efficiently on a device where memory is limited? The application throws open a form to enter new todo task. For now, I would like to save the newly added task to my-todos.xml once the user presses "save" button. What are the common ways to append such a change to an existing XML file?(note that I don't want to read the whole file again and then persist)

Basically, I want to be able to access the items from "items_last_week" and create a list of them - originally my plan was to have the 'thumbnail' on the left with the 'item' next to it, but from playing around with the SDK today it appears too difficult or impossible to achieve this, so I would be more than happy with just having the 'item' data from 'items_last_week' in the list. Coming from php I'm struggling to use any of the JSON libraries which are available to Java, as it appears to be much more than a line of code which I will need to deserialize (I think that's the right word) the JSON, and they all appear to require some form of additional class, apart from the JSONArray/JSONObject script I have which doesn't like the fact that items_last_week is nested (again, I think that's the JSON terminology) and takes an awful long time to run on the Android emulator. So, in effect, I need a (preferably simple) way to pass the items_last_week data to a ListView. I understand I will need a custom adapter which I can probably get my head around but I cannot understand, no matter how much of the day I've just spent trying to figure it out, how to access certain parts of a JSON string..

• Mono WCF NetTcp service takes only one client at a time

  While trying to build a client-server WCF application in Mono we ran into some issues. Reducing it to just a bare example we found that the service only accepts one client at a time. If another client attempts to connect, it hangs until the first one disconnects. Simply changing to BasicHttpBinding fixes it but we need NetTcpBinding for duplex communication. Also the problem does not appear if compiled under MS .NET. EDIT: I doubt (and hope not) that Mono doesn't support what I'm trying to do. Mono code usually throws NotImplementedExceptions in such cases as far as I noticed. • How can I execute a .sql from C#?

  For some integration tests I want to connect to the database and run a .sql file that has the schema needed for the tests to actually run, including GO statements. How can I execute the .sql file? (or is this totally the wrong way to go?) (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). I was told to go and download that DLL from somewhere, but that sounds very hacky. Is there a cleaner way to? Is there another way to do it? What am I doing wrong? I'm doing this with Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, .Net 3.5SP1 and C# 3.0.

  I am trying to associate Contacts with Classes but as two different types. Current_classes and Interested_classes. I know I need to enable polymorphic but I am not sure as to where it needs to be enabled. • MySql too many connections

  I hate to bring up a question which is widely asked on the web, but I cant seem to solve it. I started a project a while back and after a month of testing, I hit a "Too many connections" error. I looked into it, and "Solved" it by increasing the max_connections. This then worked. Since then more and more people started to use it, and it hit again. When I am the only user on the site, i type "show processlist" and it comes up with about 50 connections which are still open (saying "Sleep" in the command). Now, I dont know enough to speculate why these are open, but in my code I tripple checked and every connection I open, I close. ie. public int getSiteIdFromName(String name, String company)throws DataAccessException,java.sql.SQLException{ Connection conn = this.getSession().connection(); Statement smt = conn.createStatement(); ResultSet rs=null; String query="SELECT id FROM site WHERE name='"+name+"' and company_id='"+company+"'"; rs=smt.executeQuery(query); rs.next(); int id=rs.getInt("id"); rs.close(); smt.close(); conn.close(); return id; } Every time I do something else on the site, another load of connections are opened and not closed. Is there something wrong with my code? and if not, what could be the problem?

• Avoiding secondary selects or joins with Hibernate Criteria or HQL query

  I am having trouble optimizing Hibernate queries to avoid performing joins or secondary selects. When a Hibernate query is performed (criteria or hql), such as the following: return getSession().createQuery(("from GiftCard as card where card.recipientNotificationRequested=1").list(); ... and the where clause examines properties that do not require any joins with other tables... but Hibernate still performs a full join with other tables (or secondary selects depending on how I set the fetchMode). The object in question (GiftCard) has a couple ManyToOne associations that I would prefer to be lazily loaded in this case (but not necessarily all cases). I want a solution that I can control what is lazily loaded when I perform the query.   edit: I was trying to solve a spoj problem. I have already implemented the solution using a segment tree. I have read about BIT but i can't figure out how to do a particular thing with it(which i have mentioned below) I am trying to check if brackets are balanced in a given string containing only ('s or )'s. I am using a BIT(Binary indexed tree) for solving the problem. The procedure i am following is as follows: I am taking an array of size equal to the number of characters in the string. I am assigning -1 for ) and 1 for ( to the corresponding array elements. Brackets are balanced in the string only if the following two conditions are true. The cumulative sum of the whole array is zero. Minimum cumulative sum is non negative. i.e the minimum of cumulative sums of all the prefixes of the array is non-negative. Checking condition 1 using a BIT is trivial. I am facing problem in checking condition 2.

• Windows Forms: Unable to Click to Focus a MaskedTextBox in a Non TopLevel Form

  Like the title says, I've got a Child form being shown with it's TopLevel property set to False and I am unable to click a MaskedTextBox control that it contains (in order to bring focus to it). I can bring focus to it by using TAB on the keyboard though. The child form contains other regular TextBox controls and these I can click to focus with no problems, although they also exhibit some odd behavior: for example if I've got a value in the Textbox and I try to drag-click from the end of the string to the beginning, nothing happens. In fact I can't use my mouse to move the cursor inside the TextBox's text at all (although they keyboard arrow keys work). I'm not too worried about the odd TextBox behavior, but why can't I activate my MaskedTextBox by clicking on it? • jQuery "growl-like" effect in VB.net

  Hey all, i have made a simple form that mimiks the jQuery "GROWL" effect seen here http://www.sandbox.timbenniks.com/projects/jquery-notice/ However, i have ran into a problem. If i have more than one call to the form to display a "Growl" then it just refreshes the same form with whatever call i send it. In other words, i can only display one form at a time instead of having one drop down and a new one appear above it. • Problem saving file on Motorola Droid, Android 2.1?

  Two of my users have reported a problem with my Android application, OftSeen Gestures. Both of them are using a Motorola Droid. The app saves a text file which is just a list of gesture names and phone numbers, both strings. It saves the file to the private data area. I don't know that it is this code that is failing but they report the assigned numbers disappearing after the phone comes out of screen sleep. Since the file is reread in OnCreate each time, I'm assuming the file doesn't exist on return. As soon as I can get my hands on a Droid I will debug it but in the meantime can you see a reason why this save operation would fail on Droid (no other users have reported this)? • Rhino Mocks Partial Mock

  I am trying to test the logic from some existing classes. It is not possible to re-factor the classes at present as they are very complex and in production. What I want to do is create a mock object and test a method that internally calls another method that is very hard to mock. So I want to just set a behaviour for the secondary method call. But when I setup the behaviour for the method, the code of the method is invoked and fails. Am I missing something or is this just not possible to test without re-factoring the class? • Having an issue with Nullable MySQL columns in SubSonic 3.0 templates

  Looking at this line in the Settings.ttinclude string CheckNullable(Column col){ string result=""; if(col.IsNullable && col.SysType !="byte[]" && col.SysType !="string") result="?"; return result; } It describes how it determines if the column is nullable based on requirements and returns either "" or "?" to the generated code. Now I'm not too familiar with the ? nullable type operator but from what I can see a cast is required. For instance, if I have a nullable integer MySQL column and I generate the code using the default template files it returns a line similar to this: int? _User_ID; When trying to compile the project I get the error: Cannot implicitly convert type 'int?' to 'int'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) I checked teh Settings files for the other database types and they all seems to have the same routine. So my question is, is this behaviour expected or is this a bug? I need to solve it one way or the other before I can procede. Thanks for your help.

  I have the following Person and Gender classes (I don't really, but the example is simplified to get my point across), using NHibernate (Fluent NHibernate) I want to map the Database Column "GenderId" [INT] value to the protected int _genderId field in my Person class. How do I do this? • How can I print the argument value that caused Exception in Java?

  I am writing a parser for csv-files, and sometimes I get NumberFormatException. Is there an easy way to print the argument value that caused the exception? • Binding, Prefixes and generated HTML

  MVC newbie question re binders. Supposing I have two strongly typed partial actions that happen to have a model attributes with the same name, and are rendered in the same containing page i.e.: Class Friend {string Name {get; set ;} DateTime DOB {get; set ;}} Class Foe {string Name {get; set ;} string ReasonForDislike {get; set ;}} Both partials will have a line: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Name) %> And associated controller actions: public ActionResult SaveFriend(Friend friend) public ActionResult SaveFoe(Foe foe) My problem is that both will render on my containing page with the same id (of course, bad for lots of reasons). I’m aware of the [Bind] attribute that allows me add a prefix, resulting in code: public ActionResult SaveFriend([Bind(Prefix = “friend”)] Friend friend) <%= Html.TextBox("friend.Name", Model. Name) %> //Boo, no TextBoxFor :( But this still doesn’t cut it. I can just about tolerate the loss of the strongly typed TextBoxFor helpers but I’ve yet to get clientside validation to work with prefixes: I’ve tried: <%= Html.ValidationMessage("friend.Name") %> ...and every other variant I can think of. I seem to need the model to be aware of the prefix in both directions but bind only applies when mapping the inbound request. It seems (to me) a common scenario but I’m struggling to find examples out there. What am I missing! Thanks in advance.

  I am programming in C#; the code was working about a week ago, however it throws an exception and I don't understand at all what could be wrong with it. Var root = new CalculationNode(); -> Throw exception. In the call stack thats the only thing listed, I've been told that it could be that I need a clean build, but I am open to any ideas or suggestions. • Java: Efficiency of the readLine method of the BufferedReader and possible alternatives

  We are working to reduce the latency and increase the performance of a process written in Java that consumes data (xml strings) from a socket via the readLine() method of the BufferedReader class. The data is delimited by the end of line separater (\n), and each line can be of a variable length (6KBits - 32KBits). Our code looks like: Socket sock = connection; InputStream in = sock.getInputStream(); BufferedReader inputReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in)); ... do { String input = inputReader.readLine(); // Executor call to parse the input thread in a seperate thread }while(true) So I have a couple of questions: Will the inputReader.readLine() method return as soon as it hits the \n character or will it wait till the buffer is full? Is there a faster of picking up data from the socket than using a BufferedReader? What happens when the size of the input string is smaller than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? What happens when the size of the input string is bigger than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? I am getting to grips (slowly) with Java's IO libraries, so any pointers are much appreciated. • Using a php://memory wrapper causes errors...

  I'm trying to extend the PHP mailer class from Worx by adding a method which allows me to add attachments using string data rather than path to the file. I came up with something like this: public function addAttachmentString($string, $name='', $encoding = 'base64', $type = 'application/octet-stream') { $path = 'php://memory/' . md5(microtime()); $file = fopen($path, 'w'); fwrite($file, $string); fclose($file); $this->AddAttachment($path, $name, $encoding, $type); } However, all I get is a PHP warning: PHP Warning: fopen() [<a href='function.fopen'>function.fopen</a>]: Invalid php:// URL specified There aren't any decent examples with the original documentation, but I've found a couple around the internet (including one here on SO), and my usage appears correct according to them. Has anyone had any success with using this? My alternative is to create a temporary file and clean up - but that will mean having to write to disc, and this function will be used as part of a large batch process and I want to avoid slow disc operations (old server) where possible. This is only a short file but has different information for each person the script emails.
